Is Roleplay a thing of the past?

Blog entry posted by AirmidCecht, Apr 13, 2012.

Running inside my UO home to grab a few supplies, I stopped as I always do and hopped off my horse. The thought hit me, why do I do this? No one is around to see me do this, it's not like I'm really home right? Like I wouldn't really mosey inside my home on a horse would I? I barely wipe my feet at the door when I come home!

Almost 10 yrs ago my brother tapped my shoulder and said, you are going to love this game. It's like not even a game, its a world you play in....online!! He's not one to talk on the phone much so I figure what better way to hang out with my brother right?

So the introduction to UO began and since he convinced me to wait the next few months for AoS to come out and buy it then, I was stuck actually calling him on the phone pretty much to ask when I could hop online on his acct because I had recall scrolls to sell! Sitting at West Brit Bank wasn't so much a social experiment as much as it was creating a story and living it.

You have a basic script of who you are in Sosaria with all your characteristics and background to interact with someone else's script of who they are. Your written story comes to life like a play. Then somewhere along the way, you break character for a bit here and there. You *emote* less and hunt for goodies more. Nowadays it feels almost more weird to RP than to just be the extension of your real self as you make friendship connections over the years. So much so that when you hop off your horse to grab some goodies in game, you stop and go why am I doing this?

Of course then you grab your petals and potions and go kill dragons or something.....'cause that's real. *winks*

I'll have to get back to you on that, as soon as I finish learning how to imbue, and get done hunting for some ingredients. Oh, and complete that hunt with "Angel". Oh yeah, and I have to Meet Chargar to get my new armor finished, but probably after I redesign the guest house on my roof. Hmm... Surely I'm forgetting something.
That is how I answered the thread, "What's keeps you in UO?" It doesn't necessarily require speaking as a true Britannian, but that would help.
I know several who lament the loss of RP'ing. I wish to be in game. The Oasis instruction booklets keep within that theme as well. Don't go on line to look things up. Come to the Oasis town guide books and read about something, like how to use insurance, then try it. You're here in Britannia, the booklet is here, try it out now. Never leave the realm. I have to chuckle. Yes I dismount and knock first. Most people who come to my house do as well.

"Hunting for goodies" is RP for me. Our characters, like RL people have jobs, whether that job is Imbuing stuff, stocking vendors, selling recall scrolls, or killing things. Some stuff, like dismounting in a house, some people never did and never will do and indeed oft-found it necessary to ridicule those who did.

To me RP is being your character in-game. Almost any activity can be RP, because if you're really an RPer you're almost always your character.

It's a much smaller community who still do these things. It's like the "knock" on a door before you enter. Many times I have to catch myself and either do that in party or in Alliance so that the request to come in is actually there. I will say over the years its gotten much easier now to just barge right in.. or to go LOL when something is funny, though you can still catch me going *laughs* in im. this was a wonderful topic to bring up Airmid.

I loved your note here. It would could be a longer essay but then again, the answer to the question could be quite short: it depends on what you're into. I was just glad to see that I wasn't the only one who considers it rude to ride my horse into a house or building. I often do things simply because it makes sense to do them this way or that way because of the world I "live" in. My character has a complete background in my mind. So when I escape from being a wife/mom/grandma/employee a few hours into a world of magic, danger and being rich just because I can, I GET INTO it.

And while it bugs the heck out of me when other people talk smack, use F-bombs, or even talk about the latest movie that they went to see, I just ignore it and wonder what REALLY happened to Lord British and if Dupre is still catting around like he always used to.

I did the same thing trying to stay in character with one toon. Then the game changed and I started RP a red and lost character :p

I acted similarly when I started so many years ago. When I returned in 2008, I did the same. Not only did I act this way, but the language that I used was very different. It wasn't RP language, but I didn't use acronyms or Internet speak to express myself. Somehow the magic was lost over time and I'm not sure why. Nowadays, I do none of these things. :<
