Materialism - is there too much of it in UO?

Blog entry posted by Petra Fyde, May 5, 2012.

I think, yes. The first question being asked whether it's a player event, an EM event or new ingame content is 'what do I get?' It makes me sad.

I remember a bagball game that took place across the whole of Yew prison roof. There was no prize, we lost track of the ball and I haven't a clue which team won. Why did we do it? For an hour of mayhem and laughter.

I remember a battle for control of Wrong valley pass. We turned up and took tunics, red or blue and fought for that side. What was the prize? There was none, who won? No idea. So why did we do it? For fun. I'm a totally useless pvp player. I tried and I died - lots, but I had fun because I was with people who laughed with me, not at me.

Some of us still play just for the fun, whichever playstyle or facet. I wish more did.

Have to agree with Syrus on this.. It's more of a generational thing I think. Instant gratification seems to be the order of the day, as well as endless streams of ever-increasing content to placate them as they rush through all the existing content, and then complain that there is nothing to do.

Most people don't play a game to play, they play to win. Win what? Beats me, but they seem to think they should win something.

You have no idea when I quit how much stuff I had. I had to give a keep away with tons of resources. I gave away items galore to friends. I had shards with characters just holding PS from farming them. Gold? I had so much it can make you sick. UO became to much item depenendency and not enough UO anymore. I miss the days of just searching for poisoned katanas and armor after losing them in pvp. :)

Agreed, though I think that the problem is endemic beyond the borders of Britannia. :)
