I've spent roughly 4 times as long chopping as digging. I have 7 crystalline blackrock, after 4 full pack horse loads of lumber I had 2 brilliant amber, various wood (inclucing some frostwood!) switches, fungi, parasitic, switches and not a single crystal shard. In desperation I wondered if my Mel's hatchet was causing a problem. I went and fetched an axe. Less than 5 minutes later I got my first crystal shard. Coincidence? or does the fact that Mel's hatchet gives me a theoretical 105 lumberjacking cause a problem?
Coincidence I think. I filled several beetles with axe-chopped Ter Mur wood and wood resources (inc. brilliant amber) yesterday and not a sniff of crystal bits. Haven't tried mining yet.
Thank you i figured as much, although I didn't for see having to read another book to be able to get gems since i was getting gems before the arrival of Ter Mur.
Man I feel like an idiot!! I GM'd mining in 1999. About the time Elves came I wasn't playing much and not doing any mining. Truth to be told, I'm not sure why I even kept my accounts open, I wasn't playing much at all. Recently I started mining a bunch and couldn't understand why my old reliable Miner never dug up any gems. Now I realize that I never read the book to dig up gems!! Talking about a brain Fart!! Just shows there's always something new to learn, or at least something old to rediscover!!
The book to mine up normal gems was just added with SA. The large ML-style gems, just require GM mining, and are much rarer drops.
no, but I did get all 6 of my crystalline blackrock with garg picks (none actually from elementals, but just dug up), last trip. Now, if there was a way to convert existing stocks of normal blackrock to crystalline...
Now that is an excellent idea!!! It would free up ALOT of space in my storage house by getting rid of the seemingly useless, unstackable, blackrock pieces...
It has been long since ML came out, but as I remember the hatchet doesn't give 105. So I looked through some old dusty boxes in the attic and put the hatchet in my lumberjacks hands (Rumil Felagund) and sure enough it shows 100 in the skill. -Lorax
It's been my experience that if ya want alot of crystal shards you're better off chopping and moving around to alot of different trees. I've stood in the same spot and chopped for hours and after around 10k boards not a single crystal shard. But when i move around and go from tree to tree it get alof more crystal shards, prolly average about 5 an hour.
Good to know... thank you!!! Still doesn't mean that being able to turn them into crystaline blackrock is a bad idea though Been mining, hunting DC eles, and killing critters in discard... only obtained 6 so far. The best results I have gotten was from the DC eles.
Did my first Ter Mur mining & lumberjacking today. Half an hour of lumberjacking got me 4 crystal shards. Two hours of mining got me three crystalline fragments.
