Macros on numberpad not saving

If you have a non US keyboard, the macros you create on the numberpad or on home/insert/pgup/pgdown will not save in Classic Client, unless you hack the "keynames" file to match the keynames to that on the macros2d.txt file. Editing the UO files is not officially allowed. A fix for this would be for uo to recognise the keyboard language and customise the 'keynames' file accordingly.

Currently, even if you hack the uofiles to save macros on the numberpad, after each patch you must rehack the uofiles.

I'm reasonably certain that changing the keynotes.txt file to read NUM in place of Num to allow macros to be saved to the number pad for the rest of the world as US can by default would not be considered to be a 'hack', since you have not changed the actual content of the file, nor have you caused it to do anything it was not intended to do.

It would be better if we didnt have to edit the keynames.txt because newer players will have no idea also it can and has been mistaken for hacking which we shouldnt be risking being labeled as such.

I have moved this from the bug tracking forum for two reasons.
    1. Strictly speaking this cannot be classed as a bug
    2. That forum is not intended for discussions, and this topic would seem to warrant some discussion.

Without editing this text file all players outside of the US have a reduced capacity to save macros, they can not use the numberpad.

While Mervyn's description of such editing as a 'hack' is inaccurate and inflammatory, I tend to agree with him that it should not be necessary. However it has been this way for as long as I have played, so is it this way because there's no way to do it differently?

I know how to fix it

If i remember correctly i was the one who told you how to fix it the last time you had a problem with it. There is a new way to sort the problem

If it's legal, please share the method with us
And if it isn't legal, please share the method with the devs. :D

you did indeed tell me how to fix it, but WE the consumer currently have to fix it, it should come fixed when shipped. WE pay to play, despite what the moderators of these forums feel is worthy of being fixed or not.

But like i said in the original post, after each patch, we have to rehack the keynames file, since moderating uofiles is apparently now allowed, i might modify a few more so i can walk through gravestones whilst i'm at it.

I just changed the setting on my PC to American Keyboard. It works fine that way, there are only a few keys that are different from US set up to UK set up and none that you would notice while playing UO

If it bothers you so much once your finished playing…change it back. But I have just left mine on US settings for now. I know you should not have to change the settings, but nether should you have to hack a file, so it swings in roundabouts

You know perfectly well that, with the exception of certain values in uo.cfg moderating files is not allowed. The edit to the keynames.txt file does not change the way the file works in any way that directly impacts the game, it simply matches it to your keyboard in the same way as the default file matches the US keyboard. Modifying files to allow you to walk through solid objects is another matter entirely.

sp petra, could you care to give me a list of files i'm allowed to hack and those that i'm not...
Where in the Ts & Cs is this list of files? Cos i'm pretty sure you're not allowed to modify uo files.
