PCGamer: Guild Wars 2 Halloween update video: Chris and Tom try on costumes, throw things at kids

WoWScrnShot_040814_222955

PCGamer Chris and Tom has a really nice sneak preview of the upcoming GW2 Halloween event that starts today October the 22nd. Many players are waiting in anticipation for the first official GW2 holiday since the release in August. This video may contain some spoilers so if you don’t want to ruin the Halloween surprise please do not watch.

Thank you Chris and Tom from PCgamer for posting up the teaser.

Guild Wars 2 Halloween update video: Chris and Tom try on costumes, throw things at kids

Guild Wars 2′s ‘Shadow of the Mad King’ update launches tonight, adding Halloween-themed decorations, mini-games and events throughout the human kingdom of Kryta. In this video, Tom S and I take a quick look at the redesigned Lion’s Arch and Mists areas, some spooky costumes, and a few of the new items. We also throw heavy vegetables at children, which is neither appropriate nor advisable.

There’s more to this update than a Halloween re-skin: Shadow of the Mad King also adds a number of new events accross the world, including Skritt thieves that players will have to chase down if they want to reclaim stolen treasure. There’s a set of new dungeons, including Vexa’s Lab, described by ArenaNet as a set of environmental puzzles inspired by M. C. Escher.

You’ll also be able to take on the Modus Sceleris, a guild of NPC troublemakers, and help the Durmand Priory track down anomalies as part of the quest to stop the Mad King himself.

Are you looking forward to jumping into Guild Wars 2 tonight, readers? If you’ve had a break since launch, is this update enough to tempt you back?

TIME Techland: Guild Wars 2 Producer: We’d Turn Off Sales to Preserve the Game Experience

WoWScrnShot_030714_153029

Matt Peckham over at TIME Techland has an interview with ArenaNet’s president and co-founder Mike O’Brien. Very interesting article and tells of howGW2 has been since the head-start launch and official launch. I have experienced some hiccups myself but I love the game and it’s been fantastic.

Please enjoy.

If you’ve had my experience playing Guild Wars 2, you’ve seen few if any in-game hiccups, no random disconnects and no just-trying-to-get-in-the-game server stonewalling. But if you follow online discussion groups, you’ve probably heard at least one or two people complain about stuff like server kicks, problems accessing the game’s guilds, hours-long World vs. World queues and of course the game’s shop-and-swap “Trading Post,” stuck offline since day one.

(MORE: Guild Wars 2: It’s the Pinball Machine of MMOs)

What’s the story from developer ArenaNet’s standpoint? I took the game’s pulse with company president and co-founder Mike O’Brien as it launched on Tuesday. Here’s what he told me.

What’s it been like the past three or four days?

Obviously the whole team is on a high and exhausted at the same time. We poured five years of our lives into getting ready for this launch, so it’s fantastic to see all the players filling up the world. When we can, we’re playing with them and having a lot of fun just doing that. We’re reading all about the experiences players are having, and as you might imagine, it’s a dream come true to be able to ship a game like this and see the fantastic player reaction. That’s thrilling.

At the same time, there’s also a scramble of, “Oh my god, there’s so many players and they’re playing so many hours a day,” and making sure that we’re able to handle that kind of demand.

What’s going on behind the scenes right now?

We’ve stress-tested every system in the game, but no stress test will get you to the point our servers are at right now with launch, so we’re monitoring every part of the game. It’s a big game, and — you’ve played it, so you know — there are so many moving pieces to it. There’s the game itself, the guilds, parties and friends lists, the trading post, web services and tons more.

It’s like you’ve tried to cram as much stuff as other MMOs-that-shall-not-be-named – that have had years post-launch to glom on content — into this single point of release.

It’s an absolutely enormous undertaking to make a game of this magnitude. We know that the other games people are playing weren’t released yesterday. Players have high expectations, and they deserve to have high expectations. They’re playing games that have had years of polish. We wanted to make sure we took Guild Wars 2 to a very high level of polish out of the gate. We want it to be the best experience players have ever had in an online world.

It’s an incredible challenge, because online worlds are so comprehensive compared to any other kind of game, and Guild Wars 2 is on the high end of that scale. I mean, there are so many things we have to get right. We have to make sure every one of those systems can handle the number of users coming into the game.

But a lot of it is going really well. In areas where we run into capacity constraints, then obviously we focus the programming team on “Why are we experiencing a capacity constraint here?” and “What do we need to do in order to address the issues players are having?”
You’ve been playing the game all weekend, right?

I have, but I’m an intentionally slow player, so — this is embarrassing — my guy’s only level 17. I was going to ask you about these players starting to pop up claiming they’ve already hit level 80. I can’t play games like that. It feels…not wrong exactly, but like missing the point.

I’m actually more like you. I like to take the time — I call it “take the time to smell the roses” — in the game. We really tried to build Guild Wars 2 so that it’s not supposed to be a race. It’s not a race to level 80; it’s a world, so I think you’re doing things right, you know, by enjoying the world.

How’s server stability at this point?

In general the game has been holding up very well and the servers are running great, even under launch stress. We did have to take some things down, like the Trading Post, which as you know has been offline for a while. That’s because, as players started hitting it, we had capacity issues, and we wanted to make sure it’s in really good shape, because it’s such an important part of the game — it needs to work well. Behind the scenes, we’ve got a lot of brilliant people working on that software, and they’ve identified where players ran into capacity constraints, and we’re testing and testing and testing to make sure we get that fixed.

I’ve had no problems to speak of so far, and I know that’s anecdotal, but I was listening to a pretty popular Guild Wars 2 podcast earlier, and all they talked about was how surprised they’ve been that the servers aren’t underwater.

Demand has just been off the charts. We can’t believe the sales volume so far — it’s been way beyond our expectations. We’ve had concurrent users pushing the 400,000 number, and that’s before the game was even on store shelves. This is why none of us have had any sleep for days. And I do think those numbers will only go up now that the game is on store shelves.
We scheduled the headstart [three- and one-day early launch access] so we’d have a chance with pre-purchasers to discover and fix any problems, and we’ve already discovered and fixed several. I think demand is crazy and it’s only going to go up, but I think we’ll keep things running smoothly.

My priority — our priority — is ultimately making sure that players have a great experience. We spent five years working on Guild Wars 2, and we’re going to spend years and years supporting it. If we got to a point where sales continued to be off the charts, and it threatened the experience that players are having with the game, then we’d just turn off sales.

Turn off sales?

To clarify what I mean by that, we sell the game on our website and we also sell the game at retail. And we know how many boxes we’ve created, so we know how many copies can possibly sell through retail. If it gets to the point where sales are so high that it would be unwise of us to keep selling on our website because it wouldn’t leave enough slots for all the people who’ve already bought and all the people we know are going to buy, then we’d just turn off sales.

That would be a shocking thing to do, obviously — not something that you ever see in the games industry — but for me it’s an easy decision, because for me, Guild Wars 2 is a long-term project. I want players to keep having a great experience, and I know if we had to turn off sales temporarily, it’d be okay.

Barring that, this whole “server overflow” concept seems to be working pretty well. I’ve run into a few glitches where sometimes you can’t join another character unless you log out and back in, but aside from little stuff like that, it seems to work amazingly well. I’m used to sitting in queues with other MMOs, where if you leave or get knocked off, it’s back to the end of the line. Here, from launch to actually in-game, it’s about 15 seconds.

We have amazing programmers — that’s what it boils down to. Our team was able to do some fantastic stuff, and on the backend we have some technology that allows us to do things you haven’t seen in similar games. That’s been an amazing release valve for us. It means people aren’t stuck waiting in queues.

That said, there’s still a certain number of total player slots available in the data center, and that’s what I’m going to protect, so that we don’t sell so many copies of the game in the coming weeks that servers start slowing down.

GW2 Stratics screenshots from the previous stress tests part 6

With it being close to 5 days for the head-start for most GW2 players the excitement is building for us all. Players around the world will finally get to enter and continue to play as long as players want in the lands of Tyria. The stock market will most likely see an upward spike in some companies sales that sells energy drinks this week.

With a possible 3 hour early opening of the servers players will probably be sitting at their computers waiting and waiting until they can sign into Guild Wars 2. With all the excitement and news flying this week the GW2 launch will be huge in the MMO business this coming weekend. Down below are more screenshots from the previous stress tests and I hope you enjoy them.

The three-day Headstart Access will officially begin at 0:00 AM Pacific time (GMT -7:00) on August 25th. However, please note that in order to ensure that we’re fully prepared for that fateful hour we may bring servers online up to 3 hours prior. • Pre-Order with 1-Day Headstart: Those who pre-ordered Guild Wars 2 will be able to participate in one day of Headstart Access. The one-day Headstart Access will begin at 0:00 AM Pacific time (GMT -7:00) on August 27th. NOTE – Pre-Order code registration is now enabled.

GW2 Stratics screenshots from the latest stress tests Part 2

A920

I apologize for the delay on from the last batch of screenshots. Guild Wars 2 has so much to see and enjoy and we all will get to enjoy that after launch/head-start. It’s hard to test things out and looking for bugs while also catching great things in the environment to share.  The hour stress test went actually smooth for me. The BWE’s all went smooth for me as well. The Aug 9th and 10th Stress Test did not run smooth for me at all. I was rubber-banding so much. I think I ran up a hill 8 times until I finally got to the top.

Hopefully ArenaNet will have all the issues taken care of before launch. Here are some more screenshots from the Stress Test.

Mike Ferguson Q&A – 8/9 Stress Test by Reddit poster Tibincrunch

Reddit poster Tibincrunch has a nice Q&A from developer Mike Ferguson  that was in the Heart of the Mists today during the Guild Wars 2 Aug 9th Stress Test. Some very good questions asked and great answers.  If you missed the live Q&A during the stress test its posted down below for you.

Thank you Tibincrunch and Reddit for having this information up for all the GW2 fans around the world to view.

Q: Are we allowed to report players who are afk in the matches?

A: Report afk’ers if you so desire :)

Q: Will there be birthday presents? Or is this under wraps still?

A: We have lots of plans for live updates, nothing we can talk about though.

Q: Players being AFK in sPvP was a problem in BWE3 for me… maybe a timer?

A: We just added an afk timer since BWE3 ;)

Q: Will there be more options in character creating at launch?

A: I don’t think we are adding more character creating options, but it’s possible.

Q: How long does it take to drop combat?

A: I think it’s about 15 seconds to drop combat, but we might have different values for PvE/PvP

Q: Any plans for a 1v1 duel feature? It would be a great way to test out builds and mess around

A: We’d like to add dueling at some point, probably not before launch though.

Q: Mike, will you ever add a crosshair type feature since we can aim projectiles without targets?

A: You can already aim projectiles, just don’t have anything targeted and it will fire in the direction you face, probably not getting a reticle though.

Q: Any chance of getting a guild tax system implemented?

A: Guild tax has been talked about, don’t know what it’s  status is at the moment.

Q: I’d actually want to second the question about HD Screenshots. Are they in the pipeline and getting back eventually, or scrapped for good?

A: I haven’t heard anything about HD screenshots, I will definitely let people know that they are being requested… frequently ;)

Q: Mike, have you seen the Oculus Rift VR headset on kickstarter? Any chance this would work with GW2?

A: Seen it, don’t know if it would work. Its possible, we have 3D working with the nvidia glasses.

Q: Which profession is in dire need of help Mike?

A: I think Necro and Thief are the ones they are worried about most, but it changes from day to day depending on what they change.

Q: Is PVE difficulty back the way it was intended to be this stress test?

A: We are still looking at PvE difficulty, we’d like it to be close to BWE2 difficulty instead of BWE3

Q: Are there plans to add more servers at launch? or is this the final list?

A: We will add more servers as needed, this is close to the final list for launch though.

Q: Mike, the third male Sylvari face ( horizontally ) had its bioluminescence changed for the worse. Is this a bug?

A: I assume so.. I have seen a couple posts on it already.

Q: Is the skill lag in the game ( atm ) just because of the stress testing?

A: Skill lag is generally from servers lagging.

Q: Any confirmation on the voice pitch slider during character creating at launch?

A: No Idea.

Q: Is there a chance that weapons might be dyeable release or later?

A: I know some can be emblemized with your guild emblem, I don’t think dyes can be applied to the though. Its something we might be able to look at post ship though.

Q: Can we get the preview window to display weapons in our hands, and not hiding in our cloaks?

A: Preview is still being worked on, I will mention it to the programmer working on it.

Q: Currently, what profession needs balancing the most?

A: The skill guys are looking at all professions, I think they are really only happy with Warrior at this point, but I am not too sure, skill aren’t my thing.

Q: Do you know how long the 24 hour WvW battles will happen at launch, before the 2 week battles start?

A: probably a week or two… we just want the servers to get some data before we turn them on so we don’t have 2 week mismatches all over the place

Q: Are you guys still raising the caps ( WvW? ) for launch?

A: We are still optimizing.. It will hopefully go up before launch, we found a couple things over the last day or two that should help performance.

Q: Are queues in WvWvW working as intended or more work to be done yet?

A: WvWvW queues are working better, but they still need a little love.

Q: What are the indented caps per map/per server in WvWvW?

A: As many as we can fit in there… still a work in progress.

Q: Is there any way to tell if your queueing for WvW or not?

A: We don’t have any queue status indicators yet, trying to get them in for launch.
