That remark about UO and house refreshes got me to thinking about how much of UO is truly Skinner Box in application. Good grief.

if ya haven't, you really gotta read this article.... this part made me smile... big smile :D

"Of course, virtually every game of the last 25 years has included items you can collect in the course of defeating the game--there's nothing new or evil about that. But because gamers regard in-game items as real and valuable on their own, addiction-based games send you running around endlessly collecting them even if they have nothing to do with the game's objective.
It is very much intentional on the developers' part, an appeal to our natural hoarding and gathering instincts, collecting for the sake of collecting. It works, too, just ask the guy who kept collecting items even while naked boobies sat just feet away. Boobies."

Love how UO is mentioned in the past tense.

How is this statement putting UO in the past tense? I read it that the housing refresh is essentially past tense? I underlined what makes me get that impression.

Or did I miss another reference to UO?

The writer meant you no longer have to refresh your house.

But now you have to refresh your boat, and/or log in daily to get your Guarented Skill Gain. So they, in essence, are still doing what the article says to get you addicted

Lots of stuff wrong with this article. In my opinion, they way over simplified the human psyche and what drives us, and in addition, why video games are appealing and potentially addictive.

"How much harder would we work at the office if we got this, and could measure our progress toward it? And if the light shot from our crotch?"
    -- Show's what they know.

Although I have to admit, that ZD Online business is really unbelievable.

    Great Article!

I know I wouldn't want a bright golden light shooting from MY crotch thank you very much! *laughs*

I agree SOME...maybe ALOT of games are like this..but I seriously cannot see UO in this catagory. UO is more...relaxed, for lack of a better term. I think it's more player mentality then UO itself.

In today's world, everyone wants what they want NOW! When I first started playing UO, I remember it taking me almost 9 months to GM Magery, and I didn't do it by continuously casting one spell over and over like people do now.

When I came back, there were alot of skills that I had lost on soulstones, and sure I know how to gain those skills back FAST but it's not necessary.

I had to leave my crafter on Atlantic when I moved back to Origin, re-training Tailoring/Smithing/Carpentry/lumberjacking...I lost stealing, I lost begging...and yeah there are ways to get those skills to GM and higher really fast by being the rat in a cage, but it's not NECESSARY.

I think for us *old-timers* that still play UO, we don't have that skinner box mentality. Instant gratification is something every human being wants, and sure we want those shiny items, which is why people do the abyss champs over and over..and over...me? I go down to the cavern of the discarded every so often and kill a few rats and get a few essance...I've never been down there for more then 20 minutes or so.

To me, anyway, UO should not have been put into this catagory. The one example that was made from back when you HAD to refresh your house was decent at best, but still in my opinion doesn't make UO fit into the same Catagory as WoW or any of the other games mentioned. One of the many reasons I love this game is because it's NOT about all that, it's the person who plays that makes it that way.

Sure I want to be able to make super cool armor, but I don't have to spend hours and hours crafting the same item over and over to GM tailoring, I can do it slowly, casually over time, same with everything else.

Right here under our nose is some very interesting threads with people talking about the way they couldn't stop killing killer pumpkins (no wonder you felt the need to comment on that one Grim... :stretcher:)

just to get the masks, but why ? Some don't even know...

and another thread about UO items in real life that had people realise HOW MUCH they're addicted... and even IN THE PRESENT.

How much they are addicted right now, and more than ever !

That means EA is doing a good job ?

    *censored 20% goes here*

    What an interesting synchronicity...

Interesting article. I do have to disagree with Grimm. ZT online is no different then letting a UO created a pixel art mini booster. If people want it they will buy it. The article may simplify as you say but they hit the nail square on the head

With no housing space, they needed the refresh function in UO early on. Theft, people quitting, or people forgetting to refresh were the only ways to get a house. If they had the 90 day timer or the "owned by OSI houses" that seemed to be locked up for ages, more people probably would have quit over the housing stuff. "Skinner" functionality was unimportant - UO was the only game in town and the shards could barely handle the amount of players.

Of course early on a lot of us had to share houses so refreshing wasn't a problem for many, but it seemed like a large portion of my time was spent looking at house signs.
I know somebody just like this - very eerie. They were able to quit WoW, but then they just transferred their problems to something else and their girlfriend transferred to somebody else. Last I heard they were taking some medication that was supposed to fix it.

I liked the article especially how it relates to WOW and why I only played that for a couple years while I have played UO since 98 with exception of the WOW years.

the problem is certain people get addicted to everything.. if its not video games its drugs or alcohol or sex or stealing, or fighting.. even watching too much tv can ruin your life if you dont do anything else..

you cant blame the video game for ruining someones life.. you blame their personality.

I always wondered why I keep playing this game year after year! Thanks for posting the link to that article. Did anyone notice the other links on that website .. to the RH side of the page .. particularly - the one about manaufacturing of food, such as Orange Juice?
Then there is the brainwashing/hypnotism/captive mind techniques .. get your attention for an hour or more ...
... *sigh* ... back to pumpkin hunting ...

Cracked.com is probably very aptly named.
There's always someone who can make 'facts' fit any theory they dream up.
Did you know that radio was the spawn of the devil and rock and roll would corrupt the young?
Also Cinema and television - video games are just the newest 'boogyman' on the block.

    *chokes on coffee*

    Ahum... *wipes*

What there's people like that ?

we should not start arguing about rock and roll methinks, as many artists have openly stated they had sold their soul to the devil to reach their fame... and go on to explain how 'tis done.

    I'm playing the devil's advocate, am I ? :scholar:

We have our own boogyman (bogeyman) in UO...
