Am I the only one who is tired of seeing all these books scattered around he shard that are a clear violation of the TOS.

    quote from TOS
    10 rules of conduct
You may violate the Terms of Service if you:

Post messages for any purpose other than personal communication, including advertising or promotional messaging, chain letters, pyramid schemes, or other commercial activities.
    end quote

Sure would be nice to clean up the shards don't you think and ban the accounts doing this.

They are using trial accounts to place the books. So even if they ban one, another one will be started.

For now, all we can do is pick the books up and throw them in the trash can. That´s what I do...

There is a little thing called an IP address to trace them with as well as the MAC address. It's really not that hard to find those responsible and deal w/ them accordingly. I wonder how much gold would disappear if they did.

You can change your IP and MAC address any moment of the day. I figured they ban based on billing info. That seems most logical. However you do not have to pay to use books.

Or just keep playing the game ignoring the occasional book on the ground...

If they could find a safe way to stop it would be nice. But I don't really find it even remotely game-breaking.

Just as they use trial accounts, UO needs to hit the site to buy stuff and track the holding accounts and suppling accounts. Bann those a few times and see how leary they will be to new sales.

Like the script miner/gold account. Track that account and their shack in the middle of nowhere and bann the account recieving the goods.

We don't need an army of GMs or Code Mages to fix the games issues. Just need a team with one pupose and the tools to rip the carpet out from under those with their head up their arse.

On LS I'm getting help or they gave up a little on the books. Thx though for the book sales gold to fill normal weapon BODs.

    Really?
What ISP do you use that allows such a thing?

    That would be telling!

But really, theres a bunch of reasons why IP isn't always reliable. How about net cafés, for one, which host lots of things for lots of people. Also, many ISPs can give you a new IP and, well, you can always cycle routers. Once one set of hardware is banned (PC or router NIC) you can just replace it with another (aka, just log a different PC on).

Personally I would question why the hell anyone would go to any such lengths to circumvent bans in a game that really can't make them loads of money. Spreads more annoyance than actual money making i'd say.

IMHO, will the Mythic Devs go so far as to ban trial accounts from the following actions? If they do, then I figure we might be able to see the books go away, otherwise they will be here to stay:

    1. Dropping or placing books on player vendors or locking them down in a house.

    2. Prevent them from axing anything in a smashable container - otherwise this would be an exploitable means of dropping books for trial accounts.

    3. Block trial accounts from trading books to other players.

    4. Apply the meaning of points 1, 2, & 3 above to anything that can be named or renamed. (Pets, runes, runebooks, etc.)

    5. Have a Game Master check each and every book some player is going to drop on the ground, before they're allowed to drop it on the ground, and apply filters so that undesired advertising content is not seen in these books?

It would then seem worse off for one to be a trial account player, but at least we'd have a minor win over this book spam.

(In case you don't figure it out, point 5 is dripping with sarcasm. Game Masters oviously have better and more important things to do with their customer service time. ;) )

If I find a book, and it contains offensive content, I just drop it into a trashcan at Luna. Might have to change that if they have a chance of appearing in Cavern of Discarded, anyone know if that actually happens to books or if that was turned off?

I find them handy. As a scribe who is always trying to copy interesting NPC books, Player books, event related books, etc. Having a free supply on the ground to reuse is nice! Also, I have a free supply of runes to mark interesting places and make runebooks for people.

Does it really hurt anything having books on the ground?

all these brokers probably pay for proxy servers to begin with. not out of fear of EA but out of fear of hackers.

it does not hurt anything enough to warrant the developers wasting time on the issue.

people should just stop looking at the books if it bothers them so much. it is just like those people who get all disturbed about seeing what kids do on school buses, so the schools just tinted the windows. problem solved.

A lot allow it I think. Plus it's really easy to spoof your IP.. and even many routers have Mac Address Clone tools.

Plus, you no longer have to put in any info to receive a trial account, so.. Not much can be done besides not allowing trial accts to write books/rename runes or something.

I do Sossaria a favor and I pick them up and throw them in the trash......

Or I play war with them and I take my inscriptionist around and I reinscribe them with ads for the RP community.....

but mostly I feel it's my "Duty" to Sossaria to pick up the "trash" and throw it away.

MAC is layer 2. It wont travel with IP hops.

The only MAC they see on the front of EA's network is that of the upstream IP device.

    droppin books on the ground!

Raise the price of books to 100k each - problem solved
    OR hello big gold sink!

I hate all this trash too, especially these guys who stand around and spam at you while at the bank. But as stated, GMs must have more important things to do. Would be nice if they would teleport the spammer to Fel...

No one has mentioned that people visit the sites and BUY stuff. The books being there is driven by players, possibly even some that complain about them, if they have EVER bought anything from a website besides official UO.

All I'm saying is there is a reason for it.

How do you spoof an ip address that is assigned to you by your ISP?
You can't "spoof" a DHCP address

    ...just google it...

There's nothing to google..... ANY information which says you can "spoof" an address assigned by your ISP I believe is incorrect and would like to see it. You ISP assigns your IP address and your ISP handles routing to your PC. The user has no control over that.

    *edit*
Now you can create a DHCP server for your local PC and transparant proxy out to the internet. Even in those cases , all your machines will have the IP address the ISp assigned to you

    *Shrugs*

I was not aware it was that difficult to make the inscription skill unusable for Trial accounts.

If they really cared about the books I am sure they would have fixed it by now but they are to busy banning players for stable doors and gozas. <--- High Priority.
