most of us realise there are things fundamentally wrong. maybe if we post ideas the devs may take some o them and 'run with them'?
before im flamed i just add that these are some thoughts of mine and im entitled to them.

EM events, lots of people and many from other shards wandering around disrupting the events and asking what drops they would get etc so clearly no interest in the story line.

using rl money to buy gold/items from brokers, this hurts uo as while they can sell these items they will keep attempting to duplicate items and checks and stuff. nobody able to buy them then no reason to try to cheat new players that try to play legally dont have a chance against the money and item buyers with rl money. the items if you check terms of service are all owned by Electronic arts so all items are theirs so its theft, appropriate property belonging to another for financial gain.

my method to rectify this would be to turn off cross sharding for 6 months, players would have to have a character on the shard to get to EM events. this would also stop brokers from moving items from one shard to another.

brokers are easy to catch, broadsword contact a broker to buy stuff (test purchase) when they meet bang caught in the act.

    scripters instant ban

ok ive stuck my head up so lets see what ideas you have

Alls this will do is piss players off and if enough quit UO will be shut down due to lack of funds.
Close down all the brokers and you will probely end up closing UO due to lack of funds.
again you run the risk of closing down UO.

I totally agree with you that these are things that should be taken care of and if they were done in UO's hay day then UO would still be around for us to play but this has gotten to a point that killing/banning mass accounts could very easily close UO's doors and as much as we hate it the Rare's Community buy a lot of the event items and closing that door would hurt UO also.

RMTers and Scripters are an evil that we all may not like but must accept as a fact of UO Life.
Make event items shard bond is probably the only way to slow down maybe stop the event disrupters or it could totally piss them off and they go into berserk mode and destroy all shard events.

UO is to much like the real world in that you pick the lesser of two evils and hope for the best.

in my experience at events, the griefers are usually home shard players more often than not. Yes, there are many "eventers" (such as myself) who do little anymore in UO except these events. Of "eventers" there are 2 types, those who collect, and those who are in it purely for the gold. Id say about one third of "eventers" dont care about the story at all, but even these usually dont take the time to actually disrupt events, that would be too much effort. The people who actually collect, while we do also sell many items, do really care about the story and the lore. an item that fits into the story and makes sense is just one of the things that makes it a "good" rather than a "bad" drop. My least favorite type of items are Mesanna tour ones. pure pixel crack, no story at all. I respect that some people collect them, but they just arent my thing. A good item to me has to come from a good story to be desireable. Some of my favorite items are not all that flashy, but came from great stories and remind me of time spent with friends. I would still attend events if there was no "drop" , but lets be honest its a video game and in video games alot of people do like loot. I enjoy events for the story, the live entertainment, as well as of course the drops / items (which includes not just EM items, but also high end global loot artifacts from bosses / mobs) Its a fun play style, yes does take setup and dedication (all my characters are permanent and i enjoy the events of 15 shards) Some old time eventers have characters on every shard. I attend alot of events, and while no one likes griefing, by there nature events can be intense and very frustrating at times. people get mad, people complain. It goes both ways. people on both sides need to calm down, try to enjoy the event for what it is, and overlook things that just arent perfect.

People who script should be banned. They had mass bannings a few years ago and here we are today.

The brokers are made up of dupers and I'm not sure how you'd stop those unless they started a Lawsuit.

As far as events I think the cross shard people probably already have characters on the shards they are
Going to participate in, so I'm not sure how effective stopping transfers would be.

This doesn't include the complaints from those with shard shields.

A lot of these, if not all, ideas have been mentioned before. But I'm guessing they would struggle to police these things instead of developing new content.

Cross sharder's aren't a problem in UO. At least not any more of a problem then the people that whine that they are the problem.

UO's biggest problem is lack of dedicated staff and funding. To resolve this you have to change funding model. The Origin store would have to be redesigned and modified to drive third party companies out of existence. This is possible but they would require the hiring of people experienced in this. The in game economy would be volatile and unsettled for a while but would ultimately settle, and EA/Broadsword etc would generate huge amount of revenue that could then be used to benefit the game!

    Brokers are not gold dupers.
Gold sellers are not necessarily Gold dupers.
    Gold dupers are gold dupers.

Brokers help people make a safe trade in game, since the game doesnt allow a means for it.
Not all people selling Gold have duped it. In fact i would say most people have made that gold in game via legitimate methods.
Gold dupers are a very rare thing.

Shut off cross sharding and watch the rares pile up for a flood gate style release.

They cant catch scripters unless they are afk or doing something extravagant.

Uo should keep their prices competitive. Who is going to pay $30 for an expansion that was released 4 years ago.

No I know several brokers that dupe.

Not all people who sell are dupers, but I'm willing to bet the majority who run their own website do.

Just buy something and see if it will vendor.

As far as scripters, most of these are fair obvious.

Most brokers from websites have nothing to do with where the items come from... they simply work for the site and answer the pages and have access to the storage of the illicit items. I highly doubt they have any idea where the crap comes from it's a job.

I could tell you rumors about some of it that would curdle your blood in your veins but spreading rumors is as bad if not worse than the offense.

It wouldn't take rocket science to "label" the worst offenders. Honestly all they would have to do would be to add a "flag" to accounts that are logged in for more than 20 hours a day. Any account logged in >20 hours should get a hidden visit from a GM. This GM should monitor their behavior and decide if it is performing actions against the ToS. It is possible for a GM to be there but not seen. That would certainly root out the "scripters".

As for the others I believe I was once told that they did try banning the barking bot that was at Haven bank day in day out they banned this person over and over and over but they kept coming back... And sadly you can't ip ban someone as there are ways around that as well.

As for the item trade and EM events my few thoughts on that are #1 don't make rare drops. Make all drops everyone drops. This takes the "rarity" and "value" out of the item and makes those attending the events for the event and story happy and the "rares" group can keep to having true "rare" items from things like the Mesanna tour drops and other things. IMO there is getting to be a glut of "rares" making all rares less exciting. So the drop of a truly "rare" item ought to be FAR less often than it is. If you added up all the drops on all the shards that are supposedly "rare" and put that crap all together for the last few years we've had the EM events the number of "rares" pouring from the events is staggering! This needs to STOP. Each EM should drop one real "rare" once an election period perhaps. Otherwise it ought to all be everyone drops. #2 Make the drops shard bound or just stop doing drops for a year. And finally... put a GM at EM events and those who act up and are harassing other players, ignoring the EMs requests to move or pipe down or stop casting should be immediately tossed in Jail... where they are told the first time that this behavior will NOT be tolerated and then released back to the event. Second offense they miss the event entirely and spend the rest of it in Jail... Third offense give them a 3 day vacation from UO during which the GMs should check their accounts and houses and see if they have been doing any illicit activities such a duping if they have been they ought to get the flaming effigy treatment... if they are clean but continue to be a disruption then after the next incident they should be banned. Though I would say that after a year offenses ought to drop off. Everyone has a bad day once in awhile. But habitual offenders ought to be disciplined, doing so would curb the behavior more than anything in a very short order. Years ago when we had seers they did such things. If you were being disruptive *poof* off you would go.

I do like the Concept of Event Rares Being Shard Bound, although for the Sake of Rares Museums and Raresfest it would hurt a very crucial group in this game. So I am against it for that reason.

I would propose that Event Drops Be Sold From an NPC Similar to a library Donation system, but the only acceptable item being gold. These versions would be labeled "Replicas" Though. And the Items only be sold on the server of their origin.

Gold Sink, More House deco without having to pay billions. An Option for players who didn't get a drop. How is this a bad plan?

    What?
Current Method. Average player Paying 100 mill to a bill for the item, that there is a limited # of to begin with, if they wanted to get it from players that did the event.
My Method: No limit to the # of the replicas, Set Price, Gold Sink, Will be Cheaper than the Originals.

How is this only good for the rich?

The Pricing of the Replica versions would require more thought, not too low to devalue the real ones, but not super high to be unreasonable.

Yes but if it goes by current prices only the rich can afford them anyway and the average player who would have wanted to keep one wouldn't get one.

Do you think the replicas would sell for the same amounts as the legitimate drops?

I was thinking more along the lines of 10-25 mill for the replicas. Vs 100mill -1.5 billion gold (What some of the actual drops sell for)

Lol. How long do you think it takes someone to earn that much? i know i cant afford one at 10million. I still havent even managed to save 1 million yet lol. But I have been to 3 events and have 2 items to show for it :)

And those two event rares you could probably sell for 100's of mills. I wasn't suggesting they do away with the event drops, just that they add the option to pick up replicas for decorative purposes.

But are you closer to having 10-25 mill or 100 million?

You can make more than a million just doing trade deals and selling pinks. what is it 600k per .1 of taming? Chance to get a 1.0 (worth 6 mill). This requires 0 skills and just some gold to do. Remember Looting gold off monsters is the worst way to make gold.

If its supplementary, well thats not so bad. As far as being closer to 10mill or 100 mill, same answer as irl. I have done about 20 trade runs, only once got a .1 sot from it, rest has all been boards. And i have to play for, what was it 14 years to get a shard shield to go somewhere it will actually sell? yay. Working a 40 hour week isnt the best way to become rich either, winning the lotto is. :p

I dont think anyone should be excluded from winning a rare, just because they are new and have not accumulated 18 years worth of stuff like everyone else.

Rng can get pretty streaky, i've seen something with almost a 50% Chance fail 32x in a row at the casino :p. From 1000's of Trade deals it averages 1/4 pinks and the average pink is a .6.

You must spend all day as a bank sitter.....because a 10 year old could generate 1 million in gold in 3-4 hrs hunting. Or you spend it faster then you make it.....which is a common problem in RL society as well.

If we are relying on scripters, dupers, and brokers to keep the game open, the game should be closed.

Luckily, we have already seen this scenario play out and nothing happened but a few less cheaters and a massive gold sink.

frodo i feel that your comment earlier is wrong, if they cant buy gold they leave? hey whats wrong with making the money in a legal way?
im glad its stimulated comments but i still see no reason why shutting down the website would cause harm.
im not poor and you say about the 'rares crowd' hey im one of them, happy to show my collection to anyone that wants to see. what you wont find is recent EM event drop items due to my own thoughts, this will go to atlantic as they are daft enuff to pay for them and i personally struggle to clasify them as rares, they are brand new items worth alot on other shards but in 6 months time are half the price.

A couple of posts were removed from this thread. Please don't let disagreements descend to trolling and personal attacks, folks. At the end of the day we are all here because we enjoy UO, even if we disagree on how to make it better or what we enjoy about it.

I disagree and IMHO I think UO is a very fragile game along with DAoC otherwise it would still be under EA's roof, why did EA outsource UO and DAoC? Think about it with an open mind, yes we all love UO and hope like hell it is here for another 20+ years but when Corp. start to outsource things then they are on there own and can easily be cut off. Why are we getting an expansion for free when EA/BS could have sold it to us, Corp.s do not give stuff away for free to just give it away.

Do you think shutting down a few web sites will stop the sell of gold/items for $$$, no it will not, there are players that everybody seems to know that sell items/gold for $$$ other than those well known sites so closing them just makes it better for the others selling them. People use to sell/buy stuff on EBay and when EBay shut it down did it stop the sellers/buyers, no they just went another route so closing down a few web sites will do nothing. Closing down all the accounts that do RMTs will hurt UO. This is a FACT that we may not like but that does not make it any less of a FACT.

Banning all Scripters will destroy UO, just look at all the people here that admit to cheating because UO refuses to do anything about it. Ban them all and watch EA turn off the lights. Again another FACT that we may not like but that does not make it any less of a FACT.

You may or may not buy Event Items but there are a lot of Rares Dealers that do and please if you don't think closing down Xfers for 6 mo. is not gonna piss a lot of people off than I am sorry. I am not a Rares Dealer but I use shard shields a lot to get items/resources that are in short supply on the shards that I play and YES I would be mad it my Shields or Xfer Tokens were made useless for 6 mo.

Do I like the way UO is, HELL NO, but I will not bury my head in the sand and pretend that it does not exist. There were a few players that got TORCHED by Draconi years back and since then there has not been anything done other than a lot of promises and then the Dark Lady herself said that they weren't going after cheaters aggressively unless they could prove that they were AFK Scripting so what did that tell the player base and did she say win at all cost. You can not tell me that UO has no clue as to who is doing what in the game, give me a break, I worked at the Naval War Collage and we ran War Games and were able to collect any and all data that we wanted to even down to the keystrokes our operators used to perform a function. Yes it can be done and IMHO UO knows who does what and to ban them all is a very clean death stroke. EA has a bottom line as to profit from BS and if you think for one second that EA will not stop funding BS if it drops below that amount then people are truly looking at all of this through rose colored glasses.

The problem with scripting is way exaggerated to a significant degree on these forums. The amount of complaining on these forums about it amounts to the old widow next door who has nothing better to do but look out the window with her binoculars and call the police on anyone she sees doing something she doesn't like.

Close transfers for six months? Ban the brokers and gold sellers? This would benefit no one. Instant death knell for the game if that were to ever happen.

Right on, I general agree with everything you say here. The only thing I disagree with Lord Frodo on is about EA shutting down UO. Keeping UO alive, even at a net revenue loss for a few years, is worth more long term to EA to preserve the Ultima brand. The net revenue, whether positive or negative, is a very small drop in the bucket for EA and posting an immaterial loss won't likely be brought to a big shot's attention the immediate moment it happens. At the very worst, they could put this game on uber-maintenance mode and further cut some developer expenses and probably still generate enough revenue for it to be worth while to keep open. I also think they would likely sell the game to an outside buyer before shutting it down.

Lets hope you are right on the aspect of keeping it open just to say they have the oldest running MMO ever. As for selling UO, IMHO EA would rather put it in a vault and collect dust than sell it to someone that may really know what they are doing and make UO better than WOW on the subs. That would be a huge black eye for EA and I do not see them giving anybody a chance to do this.

I would be interested in seeing subscription data prior to preaching the demise of uo or factor in any substantial impact scripters etc have
    on those numbers.

All I could see was about 5 years ago there were about 100k subs from the peak of 250k in 2003.

The problem with the expansion, is that it's being pitched to an existing player base.

I am guessing the fear is that no one would pay $20-30 for an expansion.

But how many of us are willing to reopen an account for 13.99 or more to get the "free" expansion?

I'm willing to bet they're banking on that rather than limited sales through a poorly managed online store.

EA are not known for being sentimental. If there was a fiscal reason to end UO they'd do it in a heartbeat.

Free expansions are not unknown. They'll be banking on attracting more in subs for former accounts reopening and some of them staying on than they would in current accounts paying for the upgrade. It's interesting. And hopefully it works.

No one said they were sentimental. But there is more value in the brand name for other potential Ultima titles (i.e., if they were to ever do a truly 3D MMO and use this game as a base) than there would be to close it the first second there is a loss. Also, this past fiscal year, EA's net revenue was $4.54 billion and its EBITDA was $1.28 billion. Unless UO posted million dollar losses, I don't see them closing it the first year it were to hit the red ink.

Well a Spawn takes less that 45 mins to finish typically....and drops 250k gold and 12 scrolls when I solo it... so 4 of those brings you in under 4 hrs and you can net 1 million gold 48 PS to bind or sell straight up.

I agree with alot you say Lucy but i think it is too late many or most of the people that gave up events and the uo trade circus are not comming back no matter what you do they gave up that along time ago and if they are still playing they do other things in game now

after reading all posts, and the op twice, I decided to put my 2 cents in. I agree on op's visual asesment of em events drops and hecklers. Hell, I cant even find the boss to target it most times.
However, cross sharding is a plus that's why there is transfer shields in game. and, you can buy transfer tokens at uo store.
As for the claim of sellers are dupers, and vice versa I got problems with that statement. To single out a group along unforseen lines is a horrible conclusion. Does it happen? Perhaps. To remedy this should it be spoke of openly in chats? prob not. The best recourse would be to detail these actions and send a bug form in. Will it be noticed by in game staff? I'm not sure, but I will say after doing this and voicing your concerns in this productive way you will get the most and or best results over said issue. The bottom line as previously stated so wisely is that we all love uo or we would'nt be here on our own time talking about issues. I personally dislike personal attack on posters just for sharing their views on a issue. At the end of the day we are all in this together regardless of our views, or perception of a problem. I will be one to say my views are mine and some may not see thru the same window i'm looking thru at the moment. does that make me or them wrong? No it does not it makes us stronger when we see the light thru the other window not in front of us. Keep your minds open and we can move mountains. viva la uo.

devs need to stop the mutlis accounts, especially at events. whether they are cheating or not..it is a joke to go to these events and see so many multis. the lag/crashes, bard buffs auto healing, all chars casting, all om follow, look at all the extra char waiting at the bridge of castle, look at all the chars when fighting waiting on the outside edges for boss to spawn. some people have no idea how many use illegal programs. nothing was done for so long that many have joined in. as people leave others take over their account to use for multi use. some people have no idea the use of multi account scripting that goes on. one account will do fishing , another does lumber jack, another does mining, another scripts gold looting, ect and never been caught. u just need to look lol.
the number one thing I want in a game is it to be relatively fair. its the number one thing that matters to me.
u ever wonder where all the gold comes from? is duping still going on? or is it gold loot scripting?
wish the devs would make event drops one to 3, not 10 to 50 or more, where it will really mean something. too much candy is bad, u will get sick of it lol.
people that disturb event should be taken away after warning, would like to see a 3 tile insta kill around em when asked to back but wont, so em can run event.
maybe an em will be able to totally mute a disrupting char to everyone so em can run event.

They opened that can of worms when they started allowing multiple clients to be open on one computer. Many Players these days own multiple accounts for house storage, extra characters, bods, etc etc etc, Telling them they can't run an extra bard into an event to backup their main character is a bit of a stretch when they pay for the account. I do agree that something should be done about the darker side of multiple account use at events, but there are easy enough solutions to that involving in game mechanics. Believe me when I say that advertising such things on this forum do nothing for your cause though, and will only increase the number of players doing it, as another member of these boards quickly learned.

Actually there is a simple way to "fix" this problem...

Remove autofollow from the CC. You can't do it in the EC. So if they remove it from the CC you won't be able to multibox in the CC either.

If this is what you think then you misunderstand the whole issue of multiboxing. Multiboxing allows a user to control multiple clients, even if they are not on the same machine. It in essence funnels the commands of a single keyboard and mouse to several desktops and works for EC and CC. Changing auto-follow in CC wont do anything to affect multiboxers.

Oh look an apocalyptic overreaction to a "problem" that only exists in the minds of like half a dozen posters on Stratics. News flash, the event items trade spurs a lot of economic activity and is of far more practical value to the game than every "rares museum" run by someone who thinks anyone really cares about "shard history" put together.

My favorite was Mesannas Roulette. She would have 3 separate rooms that she would teleport each character into at random and they would have to run from one end to the other To use the item.

Also, adding a few simple mechanics to bosses that damage players based on the # Of players within 1-2 tiles of them :p

    Just saying.
