I always use it as that! He totally doesnt even know what hes talking about
he also told me he "checked on me" and i wasnt stuck. yes i was back in town by that time, but i was stuck in the abyss after gettin pked. i remember running around as a ghost in UO when I was a kid. not exactly FUN. jeez. but when he said he checked in on me I realized GMs must have some kind of world camera. That would be so fun...I think the should add a SPECTATOR MODE to UO that would be sweet, really entertaining, I think
It isn't. It is suppose to only be used for those who truly are stuck. And if you got back in town clearly you weren't stuck...unless he checked on you after the stuck feature moved you
Stuck feature is abused a lot, as in this case. Likely 99% of stuck requests now are just lazy people or wanting for whatever reason to go to town.
I know I abuse it. Sometimes I have to rush, and I'm in the middle of a dungeon, I can hide, help stuck, and I can log off. They can ban me for it if they want.
It's ridiculous and insulting that THIS is what the GMs will actually respond to. And I abuse it too.
It's not really a good use of their time.
I use it if I'm somewhere like in Hyth where I have a rune close to where I am playing and end up dying... usually quicker (especially with insurance and Chiv) to have it port me out of Hyth to a town, get ressed, re-equip and heal up, then SJ back in than it is to run all the way out, find a healer/shrine, ress, etc and run back in.
It's what I like to call the "Jaywalking Grandma" approach to enforcement...meaning: A lazy cop would rather bust an old lady jaywalking than try to stop a bank robbery down the street...if for nothing else than to justify the position.
Obviously, this particular GM seems to fall in this category. With all the pages to GM's pretty much ignored (including my own) regarding deeper offenses than someone using a "character physically stuck" options because they didnt want to run 30 minutes as a ghost searching for a healer (or whatever other reason).
Bad state to be in...
Sadley your anger is focused on a GM who is right.
Yes it is VERY sad that that was what they respond to BUT...
The help stuck feture is designed to be used by a player who got "Stuck" Like when you used to fall thru the bridge in Despise or orther notorious locations.
Yes it is VERY abused but just about EVERYONE. Its even tactically used to get scrolls out of Harries.
I for one hope they Never waste any time in fixing it.
It's a funny situation. I too have used this to get scrolls out and worked.
But also one time i died on top of the winery with no way down and tried to use it. I got a response that the gm checked on me and i could move.
Well yes if you want to get technical, i could move, but there is no way down from there being dead so i was also stuck.
I think if you use the stuck option too often you will be in danger of having action taken against your account.
If GMs are going to come down on people for using the stuck option (which hurts noone and is hardly an 'advantage') while allowing bots, speedhacks, and assorted cheating to occur...Then the entire GM system needs to be completely reworked.
I use it and abuse it,specially on Siege.
Can`t recal or gate in or out of dungeons. Most places are hard enough just to get to. I`ll take a free ride back everytime. Its just cause I`m lazy.
If a GM was bored enough to actually "check to see" if I was really stuck I`d prolly end up with a mark on my account from saying something not so nice.
Like a cop with his back to a hold up harrassing me about a cracked windshield.
I use it a lot and when i really do need a GM i get canned responses they don't like it and want to ban me for it they can have my 12.99...
Uh, they already do...?
My story on this beats yours.
I was doing a Stygian Dragon with alliance-mates. I got, literally stuck. Couldn't move. I tried everything I could think of. So I paged, not under "help stuck" because that would have rendered me unable to fight the Dragon; I'd be out of the area.
I had no expectation of being responded to in-time, but I figured, why not try.
Suddenly, something which had previously not worked, closing and reopening the paper doll, worked!
So I canceled the page (or tried to), rezzed, and joined in the fight.
A little while later, I got that same threatening message.
Except I had not used "Help/Stuck," and it was for a page I had canceled.
I wasn't sure how I should handle that. Had a mark been made against me for a page that I had canceled out of (or tried to), for using a feature I hadn't used?
*shrugs* Hope not. Especially not with all the cheating I've seen in the last few weeks.
I use and abuse it . I'm to lazy to walk to Britain =[
I use it about once every six months, if that. I guess I must take more seriously than most the warning that each time you use it, the wait time may be longer than the last time you used it. I also had the odd experience perhaps a year or so after I started playing of using the "Help stuck" option on an account that I had only recently set up and on which I had never before used the option. When the list of cities came up, there was only one city listed. I guess it spooked me enough to decide it just might be worth learning to hoof it out of a dungeon or remote location for a rez instead of using help stuck because the next time I might not get any choices!
The very reason that they put in the "help stuck" option was so that GMs wouldn't have to be bothered with it, and could spend their time dealing with more important issues. It sounds like the lazy cop syndrome to me. They don't want to respond to real questions and issues, so they're hassling people for something automatic that doesn't hurt anybody.
I use the "help stuck" option several times a day when I am using my treasure hunter. They "lost" the healers on 2 islands that have tons of treasure map locations on my shard. With no healers, the only option when you die is to hope somebody wanders along who can handle 3 or 4 Ancient Wyrms and rez me, or use the help option. heal up and recall back to a safe location a couple of screens from the chest and stealth to my body.
If they didn't want people to use the help option, they shouldn't have changed all the Fel dungeons so that you can't recall inside them anymore, should have put healers back on the islands within a couple of weeks after they "lost" them, instead of still dawdling about it 6 years later, and they shouldn't have made Abyss so large without having resurrection shrines other than at the Primeval Lich spawn in a PvP area, where you can't recall out and it is difficult for a newly rezzed player to re-equip while running away from the spawn. It's like the management has been trying to make people get fed up and leave the game for the last 7 years or so. For my part, I'm going to continue using the "help stuck" option as often as I need to. They can like it or lump it.
Wow, the amount of laziness is staggering.
Every time I have used the option (maybe once a year) I have actually been stuck and a GM has always either appeared or sent a message to me which gives me the impression that it's not some automated process. If a GM is actually answering each of these calls, it's no wonder legit pages have to wait so damn long. The only time I've tried to use the "help I'm stuck" option because of sloth, I got a message saying I was not really stuck and to try to find my way out again. I think the GM was right, it's not a free ride to town, people shouldn't be so lazy and try to skip the "boring" parts of the game because they want to get back to the "fun stuff" quicker.
What's next? "Training a new tamer is too tedious, the skill gain system is broken so I scripted it. It's their fault for making it too hard."?
I have never used the 'stuck' option unless I really was totally stuck and unable to get myself out. There is, I believe, a warning about misuse in the response? It used to be that you could only use it 3 times per day.
Treasure hunters should probably aim to get 'sacrifice' virtue and/or gems of salvation to help? Although being dead on an island with no healers is a legitimate use of the function.
- I agree, ^2
It does not take much time, at all, to get back to your belongings as long as you know your surroundings.
You're going to have to show me a screen shot of that message you weren't really stuck, otherwise I call BS. Sorry to those that have claimed to never use it unless necessary, but here's what it looks like to the rest of us...
"Gosh, I would never abuse that option. I only ever used it once and it was when an earthquake hit the city I was in, and I lost connectivity. When the power was restored I logged back in, I ran around for 2 straight weeks as a ghost, but I told myself, there's no way I"m going to cheat and use that button. Anyone that knows me, knows that I would never do that and besmirch my good name"......sheesh
Should I ever use that option again when I'm not really stuck, and get that message again I'll be sure to grab you a screenie.
Read the whole thing before you troll my post...
If the ops help stuck option took him strait to as page request and he said he was stuck when he wasnt the GM did exactly what he should have done by telling him its not a free ride to town. The whole help stuck feature was put in to reduce excessive and dumb gm pages with no merit. Unfortunately it is exploited like anything else that can be exploited in uo. Im admit im guilty of taking "free rides" to town from time to time also. All in all its a bad feature though. Logging out to save pets was also put in for similar reasons and is exploited like mad. The logging out with pets is even worse imo because stat loss for pets is avoided. Stat loss for pets is supposed to be a "feature". Logging out to save it is not.
I don't have a screen shot, but I too have got that response.
Granted it was several years ago. I was alive on an island somewhere, but without a boat and no magery or other means to recall. The GM told me to go find someone who could give me a gate... I just waited a while, used the "I'm stuck" again and off I went.
Actually since I have been playing UO since 98 I have only used the help stuck option 2x in all those years. So obviously I never abuse it.
The first time was when the lost lands were brand new and I was jogging around far north following the sea from the Lighthouse. Suddenly I fell into the water. I could not get out. I had discovered a ledge and had hopped out a few times from the ledge but it was not working in this particular spot.
I paged help stuck option. A GM came. That GM actually paged another GM and the second one paged another one. Suddenly a flock of em were there tryin to get me off of a void no tile tile in game that I apparently fell into.
It was comic, somewhere around the 7th in the flock of GMs there by me, I was finally released from my prison of some blank void brown tile of no tile tile in the game.
The only other time I used the help stuck option was when I first began playing on Siege. I accidently ran thru a moongate near the TB faction that shot me to Serpents Hold. Now I know there were no moongates off of Serpents Hold on Chesapeake so I paged. I did go looking around for a moongate off but apparently I missed the one that was there. I was told I was not stuck I could get off the isle of Serp. Hold by the GM.
I felt ignored by that GM or abused since I so seldom ever use the help stuck option, ya would think the only 2nd time ya page they might help ya out once.
I went looking further on Siege for a moongate OFF Serp. Hold isle in the outbacks of the island.
I did not expect to find the moongate off the island, IN a building, so I had not checked IN the buildings there. So having found no gate off, on the island land, anywhere, the only way OFF Serpents Hold that I knew of was...........darting thru the cave that led to the dungeon/s and then back to lava lizards in the lost lands, & a long walk back to Papua.
So I took that route and got back to Papua as a dead ghost.
Little did I know that there WAS a moongate on Serp. Hold on Siege, in the northern most building, Warriors Hall there. Apparently the GM knew this ! He just did not share that info with me when I paged !
But I did get OFF Serp. Hold on Siege, just a very fatal long walk back to Papua thru the dungeons' caves.
Makes you wonder if some EA beancounter didn't take a look at the GM metrics and say "gee, 50% of the GM calls we get are for people being stuck or pets being stuck. UO team, you have 30 days to put in a player and pet stuck feature because we are cutting your GM staff by 50% at the end of the month"....
"Every time I have used the option (maybe once a year) I have actually been stuck and a GM has always either appeared or sent a message to me which gives me the impression that it's not some automated process. If a GM is actually answering each of these calls, it's no wonder legit pages have to wait so damn long."
I have to agree that it seems the GM actually has to remove you him or herself as I have been told also "you are NOT stuck" and it was true so the GM actually came to me and saw that I wasn't stuck.
And yes now I think twice before using the stuck option although I used the heck out of it when dead in the underworld.
They need to allow us to go back upstairs when we are dead at the steps down to the abyss.
...or place a healer somewhere
It must take 100000000000000000000000000 hours of programming and an act of God to place a healer. After all, they said they had accidentally "lost" the healers on the treasure map islands 6 YEARS ago and still haven't replaced them. For a few months, when we asked about them, it was "we're aware of the problem and are working on a solution". Then they just started to ignore us treasure hunters when we even asked. You would think it would take like a minute for a programmer to add a line of code that places a healer in a given location, but evidently they are practically impossible to replace when they get "lost". So fat chance on getting healers in the non-PvP areas of the Abyss.
I've never gotten a message that I'm not stuck. It appears to be fully automated if you use the "help stuck" option. But GMs may be checking it from time to time, which would be a total waste of their time, when they could be answering pages about real problems. Then again, when I use the option, I am a ghost in a location with no healers and no way out other than using the option or waiting around hoping another player shows up to give me a gate to town or a rez. Also, those 2 or 3 Ancient Wyrms guarding the chest generally make short work of any helpful player who might wander by, so they have to use the "help" option too.
I have used the option 6 times on one particularly unlucky treasure hunt, when I was trying to use the EC (HUGE mistake for T hunts, even though the compartmentalized loot means you can see whether there is an item worth grabbing among the 50 or 60 pieces of junk) and the autorun/pathfinding/whatever the heck it is "feature" (more like pain in the @## that you can't turn off) caused my character to suddenly take off running in a random direction, usually right at the AWs, when I was hiding and tried to move a step in stealth mode (I finally gave up trying to use the new EC interface (maybe it should have been named PoS?) and logged in 2D to finish the hunt), so there doesn't appear to be a daily limit to the number of times it can be used.
i use the stuck feature probably once every couple days. ever since i realized i could just teleport to cove whenever i'm dead, it's been a real help.
*shakes head* Oh no he Di`int!
Maybe the learning curve wasn`t that big a deal for most of us but I can see how some people would have problems with it.
OMG! This is sooo totally sad! The GMs would rather ban peeps for using/abusing the help-stuck feature than do something about REAL issues.
Last night me and couple of peeps paged becausw we a had a spammer for a broker site and a dude cussin his little pea brain out in global chat. Yes, I tried to put them on ignore and it wouldn't work.
(Side note I discovered my installation of UO on my computer had been corrupted and I'm gonna have to reinstall it.)
Anyway all we got was canned BS and we all partied up and left global CRAP chat!
Except no one was banned...or punished...just got told...
Wait... isn't this automated? Do GMs actually have to manually move people?
Like 99% of the time yes.
However, I have tried using it and randomly recieved a page box wanting me to actually type something and it didnt give me the opportunity to select a city.
In fact, the last time that happened I had fallen through the floor of the trapped hallway in the Underworld and couldn't get out. (This was before they fixed it by moving you when you logged in there) At the time, the GM actually argued with me that he wouldn't move me because "I shouldn't have been able to get there"... Which is right, it was a bug... Even when I died I was still trapped there.
Wound up reporting the GM and logging off. Found myself in Britain the next day.
Just thought I'd toss this out here and let you all decide, seems to go along with what Martyna is saying:
When you use the help stuck option, there seem to be two different outcomes (so to speak)...
1. you get the town list right away, you click a town and it transports you usually within a few seconds (or so, depending on how often you've used it in the last 24 hours).
2. You get the option to type in what happened, and then... the last time I got this option (or outcome), I had to wait several minutes to get transported. I'm going to assume this is because a GM was checking things out to see what was going on.
I was told by another player that when you type in your problem a gm responds to it, whereas it's automated when you just get the option with the list of towns.
It seems like you can keep clicking and closing out (aborting the help menu) to get the list of towns and be automatically transported if it keeps giving you the blank field to fill out.
The last time I filled out a form for it I waited up to 5-10 minutes to get transported out of terra sanctum where I'd died doing the spawn. My body finally disappeared and I waited several (5?) minutes after that to be transported to a shrine. When that didn't happen, I gave up and used the stuck option (meaning it took 5-10 minutes for me to get transported after using the help stuck). ( and yes, I tried logging in and out several times)
I don't know if the list=automated and form=gm response is true... like I said, it's what I was told by someone else. And it may not be entirely accurate, because I've only used the stuck option a couple of (3 at the most) times (within the last 1-1&1/2 years. ).
It's a great way to get the powerscrolls out of despise!
I`m pretty sure thats correct. Like I said,I use it quite often but the small amount of times it came up with a text box to state your problem...... I hoofed it instead. I took that as "well,I used up my free rides for today" So I think that if you do write in your problem, than you are being dealt with by a real person and not just an automated port to town.
I use it a lot on my T-Hunter. But I think it is ok then, because when that AW kills you on a remote island without a healer, well you're pretty much stuck if you're out of sacrifice.
I only want to hitch a lift with a GM if they've got space for my pets...
And don't forget lazy people who want to get all their Xshard chars to the same place ;D. I love using this "feature," bwhaha.
This is interesting though. To the OP, the GM screened your move? Weird. Sometimes it prompts you to write to the GM, is that what you meant?
you were in fel rule set you could of had cursed items on you and using it to get out.
o i guess thats true. i was a ghost at the time that i tried to activate the feature, though. its so boring to wait for a rez.
