Addressed to you, altho I realize you may not be the decision maker, you *are* about the only one we see on the boards anymore...But here's a thought:

The new plants, I see a lot of peeps posting that after 2 weeks, they wont be growing them anymore, the seeds wont even be looted from corpses, etc.
And personally, yeah, after I get a few hedges to put around my place, probably be the same thing here.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the effort and time, and will have me some of all of em =).
But, to keep gardening going, and the growers a reason to grow continuously,
Don't turn off the turn-ins. Leave Onoe and the chest where they are, and perhaps Yonns, and let them continue to accept what they accept.
And add plants to what they accept!
All plants, not just the new ones. Let them be enough points to be worthwhile to spend the time and potions to grow em, but not out of line with everything else.

This way, gardeners have a continuous reason to keep growing, and it lets them also have a shot at collecting a few of the new rewards. Make it kinda like the library donations, just an ongoing part of the game?

It would give the gardeners a reason to dust off their pots, and start planting again. As well as adding a bit of value to their product again.

Adding a quest to the Naturalists, with a possible new set of rewards, e.g. a gardening tool with a special inscription (" Gardener's Shovel", "Sack of Nutrition" etc.) would be a nice supporting feature for the new -and maybe old - plant system.

So looking forward to growing something new. Could you please add a "nurtured by" name of gardener toggle on/off when we set a plant into deco mode?

I think that would be a fantastic idea! Anything like "nurtured by" or "grown by" would be nice.

As for the suggestion of the OP, I completely understand where you are coming from with regard to giving us a reason to keep growing plants. That being said, I would have to disagree with the way that was suggested. Spring Cleaning is, and was always intended, to be a short-lived "event". Keeping it turned on forever and adding gardening items to the turn in list would be wrong. Why not make every craftable a turn-in then? Plants and gardening are in that general ballpark of the skill set.

I would love to see gardening get some attention and a turn-in system could work very well. How about the library or zoo collections? Why not create an NPC gardener in the "Landscaping & Gardening" section of the library where we could donate seeds, plants, and resources?

The list of rewards could be endless but in keeping with the "glasses" theme of the top end library rewards this could easily be incorporated into something like: "Gardeners Reading Glasses". How about a clothing item like an apron or half apron that states something like; "Member of the Royal Britainnian Botanical Society." (similar to the guard sashes could be different hues based on shard).

Anyhow... thanks OP for starting this thread. I've wanted to put my ideas down "on paper" and you provided me the opportunity to do so.

HEY EA/MYTHIC OR WHATEVER YOUR NEW NAME IS. READ THIS AND GIVE US SOME LOVE!

    M.B.

P.S. Thanks Sakkarah for starting things rolling on this!

Oh no! Not again turn-ins!!! Turn-ins are the most mindless and boring inventions in UO ever.

I'd rather see plants that grow certain "magic" fruit or useful (and consumable) things, and those plants should die after maybe 4 weeks.

One thing that destroyes our economy is, that items do not "leave" the game anymore, but remain in game indefinately. Lockdowns, insurance, powder of fortifying, plants that remain there forever.

put that's the point ... turn-ins are a way for things to leave the game.

You miss the point. Turning in the plants would take them out of the game and out of circulation. The rewards would give growers a reason to grow.

    As far as
most craftables are turn ins...Smiths and Tailors have bods, most everyone else has the ML, Heartwood, yeah thats the name, to turn stuff in at.
Atm, gardeners have nothing. But I agree, it could be added to the library collection, for sure!

I like the idea of a collections system for gardening ;)

Not true. Turn-ins MAKE the players collect and hoard things like crazy, INSTEAD of motivating them to care about the community. Turn-ins don't take anything out of the game. They push people into a mindless hoarding treadmill. (Same with BODs and library awards.)

It would be great to have aprons and hats with a garden tag. Spades, hoes, and trowels would be cool, too. And it's probably not ever going to happen, but I've always wanted to have my vendors holding a basket.

I've always thought decorative plants should decay after some time. In RL dried wreaths and flowers as well as artificial ones begin to fade after exposure to daylight, elements(think cemetery flowers), dust and so on. They could turn on a decay cycle after 2-3 months of plants being locked down. That would keep gardeners busy and get the items out of circulation without using a turn in. Course I think furniture should have wear and tear, too. :)

Two things I would like to see in gardening:

    (1) A pot of miracle grow. I can't grow anything worth a darn! Maybe it could be a reward of some sort for those of us with "less-than-green" thumbs!

    (2) Packets and not books for seed "storage." I'd have a whole slough of seed packets thrown about a garden!

Although i don't think turn-ins are that bad, you are correct in a way. I have a guildmate who is addicted to fishing because he can turn in a lot of the stuff he gets from it. He does it for hours and hours aday.

If that's how you view it, there can be no benefit from anything that drops from a creature, because then people will farm like crazy.

Having your item/gold sinks also give a little enjoyment to do more collecting isn't a bad thing - you just have to make sure the rewards don't leave people feeling forced to take part. It's an opportunity, not an obligation.

I'm a strong proponent of the idea that there should be a sink for every item that spawns in the game. (I'd even recommend that non-consumable collection rewards should be accepted back to the collection at 1/3 value or so). My pet peeve is leaving anything behind on the battlefield - I want to scoop up all loot and recycle it one way or another ... although I suppose I could be selling more to NPC vendors than I currently do ... I just had some bad experiences with a fisherman repeatedly selling off his own bow while attempting to fence his sunken loot)
