Considering who it looks like is riding it, I'd say Mesanna was having some fun...

Well it's a combination of things, first was the horse is standing on the water, I was hoping for a second we were getting flying mounts back, second thing I noticed was the person riding it isn't a normal skin hue....

Mesanna came to Catskills and showed us the dread.

She is considering (taking opinions) putting in a contest where those mares would be the prizes.
It's a "get people to fel" scheme. What we will do is sign up on our reds/blues and be partnered randomly. The reds will then "teach" or "train" the blues to fight and defend themselves and maybe show them that fel isn't as scary as they think it is and might actually be fun.
After a set amount of time there will be a pvp contest with our teams and the winners are given these really cool mounts as prizes.

I think it's mostly old school discussion phase right now (no promises just gauging interest) so don't get all worked up, but she is interested in hearing from everyone.

    Here's the screenshot I got.

First off, I want one. No i lie... i want 12 one for each of my chars rolleyes:

So what if you don't have a red? I only have one red across 2 accounts, the rest of my pvpers are blue factioneers.

Next thing is Europa is a small shard, those who want to PvP do so. The rest of the small population has little interest in PvP and are terrified to even look at going to fel.

Lastly each horse given out would have to be the same. No stat difference between any of them, else this would be favouritism.

I'm hoping as we go we will be able to get everyones major questions answered.
I do think that those who have little to no interest in going to Fel are our target audience, which makes the dread mares (dont shoot me) a questionable prize, as it's the pvpers who completely adore them moreso than those who use pets to kill monsters.

I believe what she had in mind (I do not speak for Mesanna and hopefully she will correct me if I misunderstood) was that she could create a to die for item/pet that would make anyone play any part of the game as hard as they can.
PvPers (Or reds) would want to try as hard as they can to get their guy comfortable enough to know that he's not going to die as soon as he leaves guard zone.
Blue non PvP types would want to try as hard as they can to learn how pvp works, that not everyone cheats (Mesanna said there'd be systems in place to prevent this) and that you're gonna get killed a few times as you learn, but in the end it turns out to be pretty fun.

My own personal issue is how do we tell the real "trammies" from the pvpers who are signing up on their blue characters in the hopes of fixing the fight.

There probably isn't a way to guarantee that would not happen. Short of someone from Messanna's crew scouting shards for a month or more to determine who the "real" trammies are (all unannounced of course) and then randomly pairing those characters with a signed-up pvp teacher.

PvP Tourneys sound cool unless it's just a deco ride then eh. And if it isn't a deco ride then need to know the stats. How about they fix reptalons and **** first, though?

Since she wants to hear everyone's thoughts.....Here are my immediate reactions.

Why assume reds are better PvPers? Most good PvPers do have reds, but not all do, and not all good PvPers PvP best on their red characters. I think many of us who spend any appreciable amount of time in Felucca also immediately thought that the contest would turn into a gank fest. That's the most likely result, not the definite result but the most likely one. Remember, they specifically asked Cal at the video HoC if he had new ways to "lure" people to Fel. Their word. Cal himself, despite his once calling the majority of us "care bears," commented on the use of the word "lure" and all that it implied.

Anyone who has PvPed of late has had issues with a dismount tamer or two or three. Sometimes those issues are expressed quite vociferously in global chat. Given that, does it strike anyone else as ironic that they would have a PvP-oriented contest with a pet as a prize?

I think that, in general, Trammel players would be more interested in such a thing as an Abyssal mare than would Felucca players.

    No.

All the pretty horses would not "Lure" carebears to Fel.

Why are the DEV's so fixated on luring Trammies to Fel?

There is nothing that would lure most folk I know to fel. They don't care to PvP. Not ever... not about not knowing how to PvP.

I can PvP... just don't care. My internet connection makes Fel a deathtrap. There isn't any amount of anything that would convince most trammies to go to Fel. Many don't care to PvP, can't PvP, don't have the connection to PvP, don't have a character for PvP..... can't afford it... or just plain aren't interested.

As for Dread Mares... I think that they need to be spawning in Ter Mur. At this point the Bane Dragon is a POOR substitute for folk who weren't around for the Dread Mares. They require food most folk don't have available, they aren't nearly as good as a Dread Mare and they pale in comparison. Give tamers back the chance to have a Dread Mare. And don't play games with it.

Not interested in Fel. Fel could drop from the map and most Trammies wouldn't care.

I personally don't need someone to "teach" me how to PvP.

I need a level playing field... without hackers and cheaters... I need the connection to compete... and many need the gear. And finally you're just not going to ever convince most that PvP is fun.

Finish the Arena's. Let folk SEE some PvP battles. Let them get a taste of PvP one vs one in a controlled environment and you MIGHT get a few more interested. Until then... no all the pretty horses will do NOTHING.

If they Really want a Forced play-style as they have stated in the past, they need to JUST DO IT - then they, and the few players they'll have left will all be ecstatic. Just give Tram a Fel ruleset, simple, done, game over. Forcing only makes for a slow death, which many will agree we currently have.
Fel,Siege, Pvp, all the same, all dead.Cal knows, Battle Zones for pvp UO/Star Wars - you know you want it.

When IF EVER, will Mesanna and Cal and Company LEARN???

The VAST MAJORITY of Players, er that's also the PAYERS, in case an EA Suit accidentally reads this, Have ZERO interest in PvP or in Felucca.

They were given a CHOICE and voted by abandoning their Homes and Moving all their worldly goods to Trammel.

As to the Dread Warhorse commonly called Dread Mares; these require high Taming skills and were and ARE highly desired by the Tamer subset of those same PAYERS. What, other than idiocy, can explain Mesanna, and Cal and Company depriving returning and new Tamers of a Tamable Creature they ALL Love and Enjoy???

Leave the Bane Dragons in, so they need not admit their collective MISTAKE, and add one or more spawn areas to reintroduce the Dread Mares.

Instead of these incessant FAILED attempts to LURE Payers to Felucca, WHY don't Mesanna, Cal, and Company FOCUS on giving Payers the reasons and incentives THEY want to get them to come live in Sosaria???

And maybe...just MAYBE there ARE some people in tram that WOULD like to get involved in pvp but need a bridge to get started, or maybe even just want a change of pace, even for just one night.

Offering incentives and events to make bridging that gap easier is not "forcing" anyone to do anything. You don't HAVE to have ever goddamn sparkly horse or item they cram into the game.

It's an option, if YOU don't like it, then don't participate, and let people who ARE interested have THEIR fun. Simple as that.

If they are going to do something like this, then it would seem that the mares will just be a status symbol because I don't see any reference to needing a minimum of tamer-type skills to own one.

If Mesanna is really serious about doing something like this, then the mares should be forever bound to the character that wins them. Still doesn't mean the competitions won't end up being rigged, but it would perhaps keep them from just becoming yet another Mesanna-created collector's item. So sick of that stuff polluting the game.

I doubt it would be that hard. Basically anyone that's blue is a Trammie. Amirite, Fel? roflmao

    *puts on flame retardant suit*

Factions failed, big time. Factions could have been so much better if the RP was right and if the purpose was better. A lot of people like to kill other people for a purpose, like Champ Spawns, etc., and not just Yew Gate. There are no real reasons to PvP other than Champ Spawns and a lot of people are tired of that, or have all their scrolls.

The only way I think these mounts would improve Fel is if they made people defend Faction bases, and if Factions began to matter again. I really don't understand why people wouldn't want to defend bases, it's such a cool concept just that there aren't enough people on most shards to keep it working anymore, other than during primetime hours. And it would be nice if Factions provided an actual in-game effect, and not some lame ass Trammel-side invasion or something. Like a reduction to the price of reagents if you're in CoM (or whatever Faction replaces CoM) or access to special vendors or something. Something daily, not artifacts or other temporary crap. Then again, who really buys regs, guess...? I don't know. I'm getting too old to know what newbs want from UO.

I am not known for being a pvp player, never will be in fact because I suck at it (if I ever did get anyone redlined, I ended up healing them). That said, I love Felucca and the playstyle it offers.

The LS mage pit was a favorite place to go to watch pvp players duel and the unwritten code that during this fight night, the only fighting was in the pit. I learned a lot from watching them go at it and once it was over the free for all killing resumed and the fun of getting out alive was exhilarating. I know that times and templates have changed but I do miss those days.

I respect the players that have a true sense of what Fel is about past the smack talk and chest thumping. It's a unique challenge and it should be encouraged! The majority may have moved on to Trammel but for those whose hearts are still in it the old school way, I applaud them and hope they get some attention.

I do not think it a reasonable proposition. It is merely a bait for those players who will fall for it.

    Why ?

Because a limited time "schooling" on PvP is not going to train players be capable of winning on hard motivated PvPers who have been doing it for years, have all the best outfit already, know all the PvP tricks already and, who knows, perhaps even may use at times PvP hacks or scripts to gain an edge in PvP.

No thanks, not a reasonable proposition, IMHO.

It "would be" reasonable if it was going to be offered to all participants, winners AND losers but if this is going to go only to winnders then mesanna might well save the trouble and give it already to reds and experienced PvPers because it is clear that they are going to win over the "newbies"....

Random mixed teams ? Like a mix of experienced PvPers toghether with newbies in the same one team ? Well, still there will be one team who will have more expericed PvPers than the other and who knows, perhaps even buddies for years who play in the same Guild be split over opposing Teams with unpredictable results.

No thanks, does not sound as something that could work to me.

As described it pretty much looks a bait to attract victims to felucca to fall prey of PvPers to have fun with them and in the end the beaten up players will even end up empty handed and the experienced PvPers will get fun at their expence and even a cool new mount.

Nope, personally I just do not feel being the tool of others' fun and even end up empty handed in the end....

Well, as I see it, there is simply not much chances that a week, a month course can teach to players years of PvP experience. Furthermore, PvPers usually have the best hardware/connection already on top of that, plus the best gear and outfit and also all macros set up for that if not even special mice with buttons and blah blah all set up for PvP.

    Why ?

Because they are into the game for that, PvP.

There is not 1 chance, IMHO, that a simple course can overcome all that.

A player who does not have the hardware, the gear, the macros, the experience will not become a PvP expert over a short simple course.

Besides, a new pet to "die for" will be highly desirable also to the experienced PvPers who will do their best to win and thus earn the prize.

Meaning, that we already can predict who will get the new pets, the already experienced PvPers who have the hardware, the gear, the training and blah blah.

As I see it, this is just yet another bait to lure victim players onto felucca to be the tool of fun of experienced PvPers who after being beaten up will even remain empty handed.

    No thanks.

If they have a system that prevents hacking and scripting in Ultima Online WHY THE HELL THEY DO NOT IMPLEMENT IT ALREADY ??????.

There is just way too many concerns about leaving the new pets to only the winners.
If at all, this should be a prize that goes to ALL participants, winners AND losers and only 1 character per account will be eligible to participate and win 1 new pet per account. Period.

What I see with something like this is the scammers in Fel getting on a Red having their buddies get on a blue and winning the horse via CHEAT.

I see this being highly scammed. That's what. Impossible to keep anything like that from being scammed and cheated.

    No dumb idea.

Forget it no talking sense to the senseless.

Ok this is just a thought I had just now I would like some feed back on this and if you all could offer up some opinions and adjustments on this. I feel that the Bane dragon should be for the pure melee warrior (not high breeds warriors) only not sampires or archers and should be tamed only by GM tamers also. The dread mares should be put back in the game and only tamers with GM skill can tame those as well. As far as this new dread mare only tamers with 320 points real can tame those if they put them in game. I f i understand this correctly those are meant to bring players to fel, I feel all it will do is **** more people off. I am the last person in my guild all the rest quite because of the imbalanced pvp system (the lame fraction arty system)and hacks. like I said before I feel we should only be allowed to use one spell book in pvp to help balance it. Its really lame how sampiers can solo so many things and a pure melee warrior is left out of all the events and upgrades. I like to pvp but like so many others that try to I sux and I dont have the gold resources and knowledge to do it along with being to slow on the key board it has gotten WAY to complex and that take away from the fun of it imho. I still dont know why they cant add some sort of duel tag so players like me can go to fel and duel 1 on 1 and not get ganked maybe that would bring players to fel, and maybe if the tag is on they would be limited to things like champ spawns is off limits gathering resources etc.

It's a possibility, but the pairings would be random. Regardless of how they do the random pairings, some players would get better partner assignments (from the training/teaching standpoint, the performance as a teammate standpoint, or both).

In terms of popps worrying how long would it take to teach someone to pvp, you'd be surprised how much someone can learn in a week. It's not a complicated system. All it really takes is practice to be competitive. As long as they have the character skills and gear to not be embarrassed, the poor "trammies" might surprise some people. They also might meet new players and find another aspect of play that will keep them interested in UO.

I can't see how such a competition could be run without experienced PvPers joining in with tamer chars. I'm also thinking that few PvPers would willingly help a tamer learn to PvP :D

If a pet can't be replaced, it's not going to be taken out of the stables very often. Rare pets aren't practical hunting companions. So firstly I'd suggest a better prize would be an ethy pet that can be used or locked down in statue form :)

I guess the graphics are ok if they're going to be a rare prize handout. Not something I'd go for personally, but they match the hair dye lol.

TBH, if you want tamers coming from Tram to Fel, just put a few permanent spawns of the original looking dreads somewhere in Fel and be done with it. Randomize the spawns a bit so they're harder for PKs to camp without significant legwork and encourage players to look for the dreads. Put them overland rather than in dungeons or T2A (though you could put a fixed non random spawn in one of those spots too). If you don't want to devalue the mare style dreads, make a longmane style dread, leaving the pure black style rare or make the Tram spawn look like white horses (the old 2d unicorn style) and the Fel side could be the bay coloured old 2d kirin style colour. Actually I don't honestly care what colour they are as long as they look like horses.

I may well be wrong but as I see it, the number 1 requirement to PvP is hardware.

Having fast computers and fast connections is a good chunk of the deal as far as PvP goes.

Those players who are heavily into PvP, chances are, have better hardware because this is what their game play is focused on.

Then, in an item based game where it is modifiers (not skills) who decides who wins and who looses, comes the gear, the weaponry and again, those who have been in PvP for years have had TON of time to put it together, fine tune it and blah blah.

Lastly, we get the training at PvP meaning setting up the macros, getting used to use them and all that.

A quick course "might" teach some of the third part (the least relevant, IMHO), and probably not even well, but there is no way that it can help catch up with the first 2, way more determining....

And of top of that, of course, comes the "cheating" issue of using hacks and scripts in PvP.

PvP in Ultima Online will never fly as long as it is possible to cheat in ultima Online.

If the Developers wanted more players to get into PvP they should start from making it impossible to hack and to script in the game, period.

Then, and only then creative ways could be thought to attract more players to PvP like with the Arenas where players, slowly, a bit at a time, can approach PvP and get used to it, feel increasingly more confident to it.

But even Areans, if designed wrongly, could deter people from PvP.
It is important that Arenas only allow fights from characters that are "weighted" in their set up and found within the same fighting force.

That is, the Arena game engine should look at the 2 fighters' skills, the gear, the weapons and all relevant to the fight and give all that a weight (points).
If the 2 contendants fighters weights are close to each other the fight is allowed otherwise it is not.

In order to have players come to PvP, players must KNOW and FEEL that they are guaranteed to FAIR and BALANCED fights where the outcome is never predictable.

    This means :

    - # 1 no cheating ever possible
    - # 2 skill sets must be comparable
    - # 3 armor and weapons used by the contendants must also be comparable

Otherwise, as i see it, Arenas will also be a big fail.
Noone likes to loose and unless players loose some but also win some, they will eventually leave the PvP game and never get back.

Getting to PvP should be a gradual process and not a shocking one.

I am sorry, but whether right or wrong in my opinion I am 100% convinced that granting the new pet only to winners will mean it going to mostly the experienced PvPers with the non-PvPers getting yet another reason to stay away for good from PvP and be royally upset at the game for having been fooled into yet another bait to get to Felucca to be the fun tool of other players.

Lol! This can never work. It's funny though.

Dev1: How can we put in RvR like everything else Mythic?
Dev2: I know! Trammies will go to fel for colored pets. As soon as we get enough to go and learn to like it we can cram RvR down their throats.
    Dev1: Genius!

Look I am all for pvp I feel the split from fel to having a fel/ tram was the worst thing that happen in all of uos history they should have done something different about ganking and griefing. Splitting the players up has caused a huge lost in subs and everyone here now see this. I personally never go to fel anymore haven't been to fel to pvp in over a year so please dont think im a pvper and a classic shard person all I'm saying is something needs to be done/changed before we loose more subs. and what also seem strange to me is almost all of the old timers say "remember the good old days" and "there use to be a feel about uo and know its lost" that was the adventure of leaving the protection of the city's it was heart pounding and exhilarating, its lost know. Hell I cant put this into the correct words to explain my feeling about what uo has become but I do know its far to complex and way to many items in uo now. just look at all the stat boost like petals balms potions foods ETC. WTF STOP ALREADY.

I give Messanna credit for trying to put things together like this, ideally it would be nice, but in reality i think it would prove to be horrible.

First off, if there are going to be "measures put in place to prevent cheating," why isnt this done ALL THE TIME. If it was it would get alot more people pvping again than a weird colored horse.

If this is really a dreadmare, and not a horse, it essentially is a reward for the character templates "i pvp but have 200 points so i can hit "all kill" as a spell"

The last pvp tourney (which i dont know if it ever even happened) was set up by EM Bennu, and one of the rules was NO PETS (other than a few exceptions like faction horses). EM Bennu doesnt consider pet pvp tournament worthy pvp, if Messanna does, well thats fine. But giving a reward to promote an already overused and OPed template is just not something i would like to see happen.

Honestly I wish my hair dye came out as good as hers. On my character she just has a little red line by each ear... looks stupid, makes me wish I didn't spend the money at uo store.. /shrug

As far as the dreadmares, who cares its just a red and black horse ooo00ooo...

It it had euber stats, and they ran a tourny on something like test center, and only gave out one in the whole game then i could get excited otherwise... its just meh...

I don't pvp and am not familiar with the rules, so I don't really know what this means. But I think the reward is a pretty cooly cool Idea. As far as weeding out the "trammies" is concerned, it could always have its stats/resists/skills cut in half and be normal hued in a Trammel rule set. But that would require a coding change.

Apparently I posted in the wrong thread:

We have been here before. If the effort is for those that are either genuinely new and have never tried pvp, or have been in a short while and on the fence because they have not developed relationships that make pvp a real possibility, and this is the nudge, I'm good with that.

Skill scrolls, stat scrolls, double resources, greater chances at artifact drops (10th ani items and replicas) have all, largely, failed. I'm not sure this is "the" answer, but I am glad they continue looking for answers in some form at any rate. The ability of folks to manipulate the game mechanics to their benefit is something that needs addressing, and it has been mentioned more than once in this thread.

I just know this dev team is not looking to create the next wave of users of "not to be named" applications.

I disagree with most of what you said. I have no concerns whatsoever about cheats appearing in an arena setting which would be moderated by game representatives.

However, there is a carrot on a stick for both the experienced players and the new (to pvp) players. If players would only participate for a chance at the colored horse, the tournament would be a lost cause. The experienced pvpers would get at least 50% of the reward horses by definition of the pairings.

Regardless, this may help show whether arena style mechanics being added to the game would garner enough interest. It has the potential to revitalize the current pvp population's interest and bring in additional participants due to the (conceivably) controlled nature which would reduce the major complaints (ganks, speedhacking).

    I pvp regularly.
I do not have the connection or computer to 1v1 most of the major name pvpers on any shard.
That being said I would TRY, as I think anyone would.
There is a problem with using cool shiny items to bait people to Fel.
Eventually everyone has all the cool shiny items they need through sales.
Now if they made some items that you HAVE to show up and get yourself that might be different, but we all know there would be much complaining and anger and eventually it would be changed.

I don't know what the solution is.
The intent is good, and at least Mesanna is trying. Kudos for that.

Yep, I like the game I used to play and miss it. I wish others would find it and find it as exciting as I did. I agree.

The horses are cool, but won't "lure" people to Fel.

The sheer fact they feel that they "have" to "lure" people to Fel shows how out of touch they really are.

If people wanted to PvP, they would. Most PvP people who want to do so in Tram through guild wars and alliances where they can ensure that it is consensual. The days of non-con PvP are loooooooooong over. Its a play style that didn't work, and turned MANY people off.

Mesanna: I think you do a lot of good for this game, especially by actually appearing 'in person' on the shards. You have become the most relatable Dev in a long time. BUT... The fixation the Dev team has on bring back non-con PvP is stupid.

Finish those arenas that have been languishing in game for almost a year and then see how long (and how much) they are used for. If there is a sustained interest, use them for a contest.

BTW, reintroducing dread mares only for the 'leet' crowd will not earn you kudos from the rest of the p(l)ayer base. If you want them back and hued in your favorite color, make them spawn somewhere. (And no, not in Fel. Fel is dead for a reason.)

My feedback, great looking mount for everyone except gargoyles... UGH!

UGH I have a blue tamer who would love to have to use my invested skills *up to 360 of them* in order to be able to tame this.. but I have no desire for, nor enough stable slots for another decorative pet.. make this one a decent fighting machine.

UGH! For the tie in to some kind of Fel fighting requirement to obtain one. I mean really? Fel fighting to get one? If the pvp realm were an even playing field, that might be a good idea, but with the blatant scripting and hacking, why don't they just save themselves the headache and give them to the players that run illegal 3rd party programs and call it a day? They are the ones that will wind up with the "reward" for cheating.

... or else EA can just drop their prohibition on illegal programs, provide links for said programs and let us all load em up and run with it.

It was posters here that called it a "Lure" not the Devs, that's a great show of faith in Mesanna right there, she tries to think up something that might be fun for us and the idea gets trashed here. I honestly think the idea has some merit depending on how it is instituted. People complain the Devs are out of touch, but when they try to gauge interest in something to breech the gap between us and them, Tram and Fel etc. they get flamed. How do you expect them to gain an insight when the majority of what they hear is people crying like a bunch of children because they aren't getting something their way. This isn't Burger King folks, have it your way isn't in the Dev Diary. Just because this is mentioned as a possible prize in a PvP competition doesn't mean A) it will happen B) The idea can't be expanded on to other types of Events in the future.

Honestly if I was one of the devs I wouldn't want to listen to you either, what would you do if your children, or subordinates at work constantly made demands and talked to you the same way we talk to the Dev team? How soon before you'd simply say "Who Cares?", instead we see them at least trying to come up with something.

How about everyone takes a step back and instead of consistently whining about every other idea that's tossed out for feed back assuming often to our own folly we know better than they do what is and isn't possible with their resources, we all settle down and have a civil conversation on the subject, and provide feedback and ideas that could change this from being something easily exploited into something that actually has merit as an event.

I got a great idea. Just make it a dye that can only be used on dread mares and we can buy from UOGamecodes. Thats sounds like a winner to me!

The dread mare and the dyes ? or just the dyes so that only the privileged select few can have them? I still dont understand why they have not put these back in the game after so long?

Hmmm so, I just had a brain fart. Would this be a lead in to the event items we earn, as opposed to the event items we "get". I like it even better, if so.

Questions: Where did the name of this creature come from?
Is it truly a dread mare? or just a 'really cool mount'?

I don't think Mesanna would offer a pet that needs taming to control it as a reward for this type of pvp mentoring idea.
