I've never let a piece of armor that's almost broken go down to 0 before repairing it. What happens if you keep fighting and let it go to 0? Does it just quit protecting you at that point?

Well form my experience I have used a soul seeker at 0 durability for an entire spawn and had no issues with damage up until he spawn was almost over and it broke on me but damage wise at 0 I had no issues. hope that kind of makes sense

When you hit 0 the maximum durability will start going down. when you hit 0/0 it will break.

What does it mean that it breaks? Does it disappear at that point (poof, gone forever) or just stop functioning until you repair it?

That means "Kiss it Good Bye". It is gone forever!

Ouch, let's hope nobody ever pushed it that far with something really valuable - or did they? :)

In the early days of the game, a item could brake and go poof just from repairing it, because the durability didn't show.

Well with imbuing and the newer dungeon loot it's inevitable now, unless you retire it and get something identical/better.

which is how it used to be. When you got a good sword or suit, you started looking for its replacement in anticipation of the time it would break - or get looted from your corpse after it went to bones if you didn't get back to it quickly enough.
I ran into a few tram players in those days who made darn sure that you didn't get back in time. On the other hand, some of us would bag a person's kit if we found a body gone to bones, and no owner in sight, to save it for him.
