Here are various quotes, from official EA/Stygian Abyss sites, that will answer your question. I don't recall anything different so I wouldn't read much inference into the later part of your post. IMHO of course.

"Ultima Online™: Stygian Abyss™ is now available
via digital download* from the following sites:..." and

"* After purchasing Stygian Abyss, consumers will receive a retail registration code to be entered into the account center at:..."

Further, this from the Stygian Abyss FAQ's states...

"Will the expansion be digital distribution only?
Yes. At this time the expansion and the client will be through digital distribution only."

And finally, this from the official EA announcement of Stygian Abyss:

"EA Readies for Gargoyle Invasion and Announces Release Date for Ultima Online: Stygian Abyss
    Aug 12, 2009
Mythic EntertainmentTM, an EA studio, today announced Ultima Online: Stygian AbyssTM, the 8th expansion to one of the longest-running MMORPGs in the genre's history, will be released on September 8, 2009.

Available via digital download only, Ultima Online: Stygian Abyss revolves around the introduction of the playable Gargoyle race. . . ."

Emphasis in bold is mine to highlight the ultimate answer to your question. Hope this helps.

I am not following you completely.

I think you can just download the latest client build. If the SA content requires a patch it should automatically. I don't think there is any reason to run all the patches from whatever build you have currently.

Maybe I am misunderstanding your intent.

Why don't you just back up the current UO that you already have patched to a dvd? or even a USB drive of some kind. The game is what? 1.8gb with all the expansions and patches?

I wonder if you can play UO off a USB drive like you can with WoW and Guildwars.

I will give it a shot.

Just burn it to disk or throw it on a thumb drive...pop it back in and reload.

Oh someone already posted that...sorry! lol But you can toss it on your IPOD too if you have one of those instead. Or your cell phone. I transfer stuff all the time that way.

It's digital only. Download the client, burn to a DVD, there you go, updated CD. =D

    Yup It worked.

I patched up to the latest, then moved the "Ultima Online Stygian Abyss" folder from the C: to the E: drive (external 250gb USB drive). Deleted all references and files to UO from the C: drive.

Long story short, I am playing UO off the external USB drive and not the local C: drive. No performance hits or anything (SA client). The same can be done with GuildWars and World of Warcraft.

I have not tried UOA yet, but im assuming that would also work.
