If uo can cap casting, swing speed, damage and any other element, why can't movement speed be capped. This seems like a logical anwser to the speedhacking problem. Pvp is hard to enjoy when players run as fast on foot as non-cheaters do on mount. This a must fix in uo.:gun:

I can kind of answer that...

Because Movement is handled on both Server and Client sides, other than targeting, toggling spells and special strikes nothing in combat is, it's harder to account for what you can do on your end than what happens on the server end.

I am not a Net expert of any kind but even if it is possible somehow, it might not be the best solution. I haven't heard of any game needing to limit player movement speed in such a manner to take care of similar problems.
Ultima Online seems to be the only game where even slight speed differences between players, whether they speed-hack or not, are clearly visible to an experienced observer --Not just during mages' duels-- and play such an important role in combat.

I believe that would be the reason why EA/M first wants to address this issue in their new efforts against speed-hacking.

I think there is a speed limit on UO, just most people cant reach it without a pretty nice comp or speed hack. I dont have an issue with anyone running faster than me, so I guess I am lucky.

Having a good set-up will get you only that far with Ultima Online and having one myself, along with a better connection than ever nowadays, I must say speed-hacking when present affects me 100% in my Ultima Online experiences and in the past when I have used it it did affect others' experience, so to speak.. ;P It was crystal-clear what results it bore.

Perhaps it is not clear to your eyes yet as from what I gather you are not all that experienced in PVP in the sense that you haven't been on it for too long to know the ropes and know something for what it is when you see it, as opposed to actually being good at it yourself, in short being knowledgeable about it. There is also the fact that you have actually had good timing concerning this. From the throngs of speed-hacking PVPers that one would encounter at the time I had last quit, there are now only few(this is NOT due to any EA/M effort) recognizable players still at it. Although alarmingly I have noticed a few familiar characters and guild tags these last couple of days.

Either way no offense meant, and if you're really un-affected by speed-hacking you're probably the exception, there's always one I suppose..? rolleyes:

    Re:

I think the reasons other games don't have to deal with it as much is because they have slower cap movement rates to start with. But no UO isn't the only game with Speed hack issues, I know of others.

Here it is April of 2010 and I just spent 20 minutes chasing 2 ridiculously fast players(theyve been at it for years now) and watching them skip off and on screen at will. As far as Im concerned EA has not adressed the issue in the least and I still have no confidence they will. Its the same old in reguards to the speedhacking fix lip service, weeks turn into months, months turn in to years etc etc etc.

I ping in the 30's and have a great pc. I doubt that it gets much better as far as conection goes. Some of the speed hackers make me look like im on dial-up. This is very effective is pvp because certianly they can stay alive till the dice roll is in there favor. Its hard for me to beleive that a speed cap can't be implemented by uo. Casting for instance is also a double interface between the client and the user. This is in effect the same type of control. Tile hacks are caused by the user changing there program files and is clearly a different issue.

Wasn't is Speedman that assured that there is a server side limit of how fast you can move?
My guess is the client lets them move ahead untiol the client rests them to the position they are. They are so just moving at the limit of what the server accepts which might be higher as you can achieve with a normal setup.

But it should not be possible to speedhack, they just move as fast as the server allows, which might be a bit too fast for most setups?

Babble, do you even beleave what you just said. They are clearly moving faster then was intended.

The most ridiculous case of speedhacking I remember.

I was being chased by a guild in despise. Mr A (which is an alias) was last in the pack. He kicked in his speed hack, passed his guildmates, passed me to the ramp and efielded before I got there.

Yeah Speedman said that, but he and Mr. Tact were often wrong in many cases and often enough their math was picked a part by inquisitive players. The perfect example was the archer combat sequence.

Sometimes the Devs are wrong and or some of the changes they make do not get published, get overwritten. The latter is more of the case though.

It must be hectic housekeeping with all those backups, code snippets, publishes, bug fixes etc. So yeah mistakes happen.

even if they could limit speed with a cap, it wouldn't stop the stump hacks and field hacks, it is possible to make all trees look like stumps, but what is more, is it is possible to totally walk through trees, house doors, flam/para/pois/energy feilds w/o getting hurt etc etc.

until NOTHING is adjustable on the user end it wont stop any speed issues.

No the server side speed cap is there being confirmed by them many times through the years in the old forums. Being there for a long time before that people used to do some incredible things real speed hack running from vesper to minoc before you were able to get to the next tree. Of course speed is atributed to many things not dealing with the server side. I personaly never bumped to anybody too much faster than me when I use KR. My pings are at 25 average but am on DSL can't imagine people running on corporate T1 lines or fiber lines or closer to the servers with less hops than me. Cable lines don't count as they suck worse than dsl lines for gaming and wireless forget about it.
I also have my connection tweaked for maximum packet and bandwith given to anything I play at a time. Used Nvidia feature of first packet acceleration. Also plenty of registry tweaks and other enhancement to my PC. So that could be a big factor in it.

I suggest people test the speedhack program and see if it makes a big difference really anymore? But compare it to Enhance client instead of the 2d client and take into account the difference of speed between the person testing the program and the person without it before the practice test is made.

Like i said i ping 30's and select players can run 3 steps to my one. So, you say that a few minor modifications could cause me to run 3 times faster? I beleive that only speedhacking could cause this to happen.

off topic, but when the Lake Superior shard was pretty much located right next to me, my ping was 7... 7!

  17. i remember at one point, AOL Legends was the most fair of shards in regards to ping, up until they allowed broadband. i think the ping was 'capped' (for lack of a better word) around 120.

I never said it was the only one. What I did say, and is quite true is :

"Ultima Online seems to be the only game where even slight speed differences between players, whether they speed-hack or not, are clearly visible to an experienced observer --Not just during mages' duels-- and play such an important role in combat."

    @UOKaiser
Been there, done that. Personal experience. There IS quite a felt difference, it affects speed clearly. :)

Heh, good proof that even when Mythic/EA does something against cheating, then everyone still think everyone else is cheating.

Changing what your screen looks like really does nothing. There is nothing on the server side that you can be made to walk over.

I have given up hope on this issue. Yes, speeders suck, yeah they are pretty much invulnerable to attacks, because once red-lined, they screen off and you cannot touch them until they are healed up.

There obviously is not a fix available, so I am over it.

I really have worked hard to become a "decent" player. It's really a kick in the nuts when these idiots casting strangle 5 times in a row are killing me.

End rant and me posting for awhile.

I, like many players, am totally fed up with this crap.

    Yes

Seems like there are timers on the client side for movement and spells, and the EC has a short timer than the CC, so they just need to put it on the server side.

Why don't you tell us what EA has done? I never said everyone cheats. Show me a quote where i did.
