I loved Dixies grave robbing idea as it tapped into something I have been meaning to suggest. Grave robbing is mearly archeology, I would love this as a new skill used to help other skills form a new charc, mining stealing remove trap, cartog, etc. The uber rare she mentioned in my book should be a Gin (genie's) with 3 wishes...1 that could be instant skill gain in any picked skill, kinda like a pinkie. I would hope for this to be super hard to get but not just low on the rng but kinda like the guar skill gain was, If it is just 1 in 1000 say on the rng then that means you may never get and then they would cost fortunes on the vendors but say after(insert # of attempts) you would be sure to get one. I also like the idea of this being used in tokuno or the deserts...since we don't have an India so to say in UO,(I think thats where the lore of Gins is from) anyway just my addition to a great idea.

Hope I am not out of line starting a new thread for this topic:sad3:

I think this would be fine but I'd rather they did away with something like Taste ID..... since it's useless.... I actually USE herding.

Archaeology and grave-robbing are not the same thing.

I mean sure they could be the same in terms of a skill in UO, but if we wanted to base the labels in something.....Then archaeology and grave-robbing are not the same thing.

Even way back in the day when they looked the same and boty destroyed many relics of the ancient world, a difference could still be discerned on the basis of motivations.

Most of the relevant literature I have read and documentaries I have viewed have drawn such a distinction, arguing that even in the early days of archeology some were out for profit and some were out for study, research, analysis, and understanding. The former were, and are, grave-robbers. Sure you'll have people that sneer at the motivations of the earliest archaeologists and consider them grave-robbers but from what I can tell actual study of their actions and motivations reveal a distinct difference.

These days of course archeology and anthropology are academic fields of no small import with funding that can make the other social sciences drool and a commonly accepted code of ethics.

By contrast, grave robbing is pretty much what it sounds like.

If something like this is done, which I doubt it will be as there seems to be a lot on the team members' plates atm, call the skill something neutral like digging or recovering or exploring and have the character's motivations and ethical code be up to RP.

Depends on the country you live.
Here, and especially everywhere east of were i live, archeologists are payed by mafia like organisations robbing unbelievable amounts of ancient items dated up to 6000 years old..
Have seen it, been there, cried seeing the total damage...
Especially around Romania, Bulgaria and former Yugoslavia especially Macedonia - mostly roman antiques..

So i am sorry to tell you, we still have alot of graverobing archeologists...

But it went a little off topic now sorry ;)

For the putting in a kind of archeologist "class" - go for it - gogogogo - is it ready now? Do it! :danceb:

Although I would make it a Fel only activity and have them flagged as criminal like stealing is in general. Make 'em a real Indiana Jones type... ya gotta have some risk for the reward :)

Eh, screw it...My post was decent but I just realized that if I should probably let the profession of Archaeology defend itself for once.

    *chuckles*

Do we have any out there?

We already had the event at Gargoyle City where an archeological like skill was used to find the relics. Sifting was used instead of digging but the idea was to find remains.

I think the idea is that they are proposing that something similar be made a permanent part of the game, to require a new skill, and with new content specific to it.

    Sorta like treasure hunting.

Of course perhaps we could also re-hue treasure maps, design different loot, make the archaeological maps only spawn in certain out of the way places (say, Lost Lands or desert areas or ruins), and have in essence two parallel systems with the same or similar mechanics and different but parallel rewards.

I'm out here, but in my opinion you were correct in your post. However one could argue the difference between archaeology and professional archaeology, professional being where ethics plays a large part. Many people such as grave robbers claim to be "doing" archaeology so I would argue they are not professional. But I agree with your sentiment of "screw it" since this is a game, this topic could be debated ad nauseum and it would only serve to derail this thread. Personally I think archaeology would be a cool skill to add but that's just cause I think it's awesome :)

*Raises hand* though I am not employed in the sector, I do have a BA Hons in Archaeology.

Archaeologist make the best grave robbers, but grave robbers will destroy your stratigraphy.

Detectorists with no licence AND no education in terms of archeology who claim to save "our history because otherwise this artifact or coins would be lost!" are the worst..
They just cant understand that every item you take out of its fund facts at the area, and dont even track gps data or write it somewere down, you destroy the history facts..
Its a nice hobby play with metal detectors and in the UK the work between detectorists and the government works great, but not in central europe - but i think i stop now on this because it realy gets off topic to much now hehehe - SORRY!

Ok, i think not of a skill called archeology BUT the profession - you will need certain different skills to have a chance to find artifacts from the past...or even an old field of graves from a long forgotten civilisation - so if you want to make a seperation from grave robbing, if this should be a "but" archeology profession, you would have to do several things to finaly be able to be the Indiana Jones later hehe (its a game, so damn the archelogy or grave robber thingy.) to gather the artifacts and/or treasures...would need to cartograph the terretory as an example, without it you wouldnt find anything ever..could use the carto + detect hidden skill there...and so on...including death traps etc..

Not sure about we would call the profession if not archeologist...

Ok look at it like this, in tram its archeology say you find an item and turn it in for points or rewards or the same item but different in some way. But in fell it can be called grave robbery as you wont be able to hand the item in for points but you get the item to keep although you go say grey and do it enough you go red [risk for reward]

So you have 2 choices keep it in fell and go criminal or hand it in from tram for a lesser gain/item but you get say compassion grains and gold/points.

That would make for some intresting digging

Eeee hehe...no why go red? You not getting red fo stealing too - it should stay exclusively to murderers...
Maybe add, if you get caught in Fel for grave robbery, you will get jailed for 2 hours but be able to buy yourselfe out with gold...
You will lose the item you discovered and the possible map you got to even find it...

I guess the whole genie in a lamp idea was a bust....:) I see lots of potential for this rare find, genies were tricky and hard to control, also had a way of turning people evil... lots of possibilitys for the devs to play around with. And I totally agree that the devs have alot to do at the moment instead of this .Maybe in a future expansion this could be put in, I see this as more than a quest type thing ,but as posted above a new profession.
Thanks guys this is my first post that didnt get shot down in flames!!!!

I do like the idea of Archeaology. Would be fun to find a list of clues and follow a trail simular to how real dig sites are found. To dig up in mounds, pits, caves little trinkets of old.
Sounds good. But can the Dev do something like it? Nothing can be done about this idea till after the new year. I do want a bunch of the bugs fixed......

Bugs are bugs, you can never kill every bug in real life so why expct a dev team to kill every bug in a game. Iv played for 11 years and bugs are bugs some good some bad but they have never hindered my game play for 11 years, they get fixed when they need to be fixed just like IRL when you have to many bugs you nuke them.

If the Dev team just fixed buggs we would all have left 5 years ago as there would be no forwards just stuck here killing bugs killing bugs killing bugs...........

Live with the bugs, you do in your house, your work, your car, your bed, your hair.......... so except bugs are there to stay. untill there a problem nothing is done just like in rl

I love the imput! but as someone mentioned their not technically the same BUT!!!....and i think this would be a great idea to add to your part of the idea lol if that makes sense .....lets say you have to have the same base skills for both things, but at a certain level like 90 skill " in lets call this new skill Unearthing" at 90 skill you would need to do a quest , at end of said quest you would be able to pick which one you preferred to master in. Archeology for the good karma "have karma tied in to your chance at bringing up an item in this skill" or you could go the evil route and chose Grave Robbing "where you would recieve negative karma, but the more of it you have, the better your chances for a grave robbing item =)" i just think that would be awesome!

Pretty neat system! IF you chose the "good" side, you will get credit (maybe get a relica of it, along of fame and points et..) by the MUSEUM you deliver the artifact to since only graverobbers would keep them and sell them ;)
If you chose the "bad" side, you wouldnt be able to donate to the museum, but will be able to sell your artifacts off to a evil broker at Bucs Den Fel...but there you will be always GREY if you do so, "guards" can catch you and put you in jail for it - players could freely attack you...its high risk to do this business and if you get caught the artifact will go *poof* and goes back to the pool...

Something like that ... hehe ... everybody with the skills would be able to participate...all over the worlds...yes also Reds!

Some limitation would be necessary to put in...say if you go for that quest to find an archeology spot, you get a map with a 12 hours timer...you can only get this map and no other for the next 12 hours...so you prevent mass diggings or something....just to make sure this dont get's jumped and get's old in 1 week ;)

Having two sides to the skill sounds good... the good people would try to find out histoy and get arties from the past. The bad side would use the skill to steal destroy graves looking for anything of value.
