Artifacts for suit building...

What in your opinion is the best artifact to build a suit around? Or is it none?? I'm returning to the game and attempting to get a suit going. Currently I'm planning on building the suit around fey leggings, orny, and night eyes. Are these good?

I wanted to go AoF instead of fey leggings, but the resists are soooo low. Are the three I listed good arties to build a suit around?

If your accounts have been upgraded to SA, make an imbuer and go from there. Artifacts still play a role, but I think you will find most folks are running around with parts or all of their suits imbued now days.

Yea, that's my goal.... What I'm looking for is a starting point though. For instance, is orny a arty to start with? how about orny + fey leggs and go from there. There are a lot of new arties out there and I'm not sure if those two are good anymore.

Was thinking about night eyes as well

Night eyes + orny+ fey puts me at 30 dci, 2/6, + all the other mods.... just looking for a good starting point...

However!!! With imbuing I'm not even sure if that is necessary, what about just imbuing EVERYTHING? I don't know, should I go this route instead?

Also, I don't want to get faction stuff just yet....

I only imbue pieces if I they are necessary and cannot be replicated any other way. Of course, I try to farm my ingredients which is a pain in the rear.

I suggest that there is no best answer.

It depends upon your wants and needs and access to resources, particularly but not exclusively Imbuing resources, to round out the suit.

Take chest piece for example. Rune Beetle Caarapace is popular. But the Protector of the Battle Mage is highly-rated too. I'll bet you could do something good with Keeonean's Chain Mail, and until SA/Imbuing hit I even saw the Holy Knight's Breastplate on rare occasions. Heart of the Lion is still popular.

Take Bracelet. Ornament of the Magician fits many needs. But some like the Jade Armband especially if you can find an Imbued one from before they stopped the Imbuing of Artifacts.

My suggestion, therefore, is as follows.

Figure out what you need and/or want for the character. Thanks in large part to Imbuing you can even include how you want your character to look, to a limited extent, in the equation. (A Samurai character, for example, can build a great suit with armor that looks like it belongs on a Samurai.) Build the suit off that. Some needs may not even require artifacts at all. If you are not sure what you need, build a suit around what you have presently available.

It really all depends on your char, and what your going to do with him. Is he going to be pvm or pvp, garg or human/elf, stelth mage (sounds like your making a magic user) tamer, t-hunter, all have their own requirements.

Yea, PvP mage, which is why I was thinking fey leggings.

I would start with getting the SA expansion, you'll want imbuing and mystic for pvp

    First get the SA expansion

Forget about artifacts unless they have a special property that you cannot get on your armor.

As for DCI and if it is in your budget get non armor worn items

    Conger's Garb
    Tangle (half apron)
    Focusing sash
    slither (a talisman)

    Then imbue jewels

    1/3 with 15 dci
    mage weapon etc, etc

Then stack properties on your suit

My opinion is look for the highest value artifacts you can find to build your suit around. By "highest value" I mean highest imbuing value. But of course make sure that all of the properties they provide are properties you want. Examples of this kind of artifact are the Rune Beetle Carapace, the Ornament of the Magician, the Gladiator's Collar, and the Crystalline Ring (specifically for elves).

Then look for special artifacts that offer good value, and specific properties that you want, examples of this are the Fey Leggings, or Tangle, Crimson Cincture, Slither, Lieutenant of the Royal Britannian Guard Sash, Conjuror's Garb, etc. The artifacts that fill special spots, such as sashes, boots and ear rings will probably be the most expensive pieces and the hardest to obtain, so get what you can that works for you.

Once you've got that base suit built you can fill in what is missing with imbued pieces. As far as I am concerned that is the real strength of imbuing, it lets you fill in the attributes you need. I would suggest that you leave at least a couple of armour slots, a jewelry spot, and a weapon or a shield open for imbued pieces to give you the flexibility you need to fill in all the attributes you will want.

Imbuing is very powerful, so don't settle for anything mediocre. You can build yourself a truly killer suit using the basic approach I have described. And don't be afraid to experiment, and try things that others haven't tried. Pvp'rs have some stupid prejudices against some very useful pieces, such as the Aegis of Grace. You can save yourself a lot of gold if you can work some useful, but less popular pieces into your suit.

My last piece of advice is also my best piece of advice. Get Pinco's UO Template Editor and learn how to use it. Once you've figured it out it will save you a lot of time and aggravation, and let you experiment with different pieces and figure out what you really need. All the artifacts are available, you can just plug them in and see what effect they would have on your suit, then you can figure out exactly what pieces you need to imbue to finish your suit off.

It really is solid gold, and I'm surprised that you don't hear more people talking about it. If you are using the Enhanced Client, which you should be, you can download Pinco's UI from the same site and it will allow you to export your character information easily into the Template Editor. Take your time, have patience, and listen to good advice, and I expect you will find the entire process almost as much fun as playing the game itself. For me template and suit building is one of the most fun things in the game.

Nice tips above. I would also try my best to work in the Kelp Legs if you have high seas. On nice arti but the price is in the tank due to how often they drop, have seen them as low as 100k on atlantic before.

For later on, I'd think imbuing - A Dev (Mesanna) said you can make better items than what you could acquire in game.

Good call, those are amazing. Easily the best legs available for a mage.

In most cases, yes. But there are any number of items with intensities far above anything you could imbue. Ornament, Pendant of the Magi, Gladiator's Collar, Crystalline Ring, etc. You want to start with those items if you want a maximum intensity suit. If you are a mage then Orny and Pendant are almost mandatory. If you are a mystic then Crystalline Ring almost is too. That isn't to say you can't make a great suit without those items, but if you are trying to get maximum mana regen, LRC, LMC, etc., then you will definitely need to use some arties.

Hey thanks for ALL your input guys, it really helped me out. Just thought I would post what I came up with:

Started with Orny, Night Eyes, Crystalline Ring, and AoF.... after a bit of moving things and lots of plugging things in excel (who would of thought that class would help me in uo, hah), I ended up building my suit around:

    Ornament of the Magician
    Folded Steel Reading Glasses
    Fey Leggings

The folded steel glasses vs. night eyes was a tough choice but I was able to get +8 strength and +5 DCI that would have been hard to get with night eyes, in the end, it looks like I will be better off with an imubued ring with 3 FCR and 15 magery over the crystalline, although I will miss that +20 focus.

So all in all I would up with

    Max resists (80+ fire)
    Max LRC
    Max LMC
    Max SDI
    70 DCI
    21 HP increase
    8 Mana Regen
    0 Mana Inc

I am really liking this except for my MR and Mana Increase, I'm wondering If I can get by with this suit for now, it is a work in progress and what I have come up with after about two weeks back on UO. Thoughts? Opinions?

You can get by with 8 mana regen as long as you have lots of med skill (80+ I would think). If you are going to be a pvp mage you will need some form of melee defence as well, either a -20 mage weapon, or wrestling. If you go with the -20 mage weapon you will need to find 20 magery skill points somewhere.

You can always save up and snag:

    Conjurer's Garb MR2 - Cloak
Mana Phase Orb MR1 or Frostguard MR1 - Talisman
Shadow Cloak of Rejuvenation- MR1 - Cloak
    Tangle - MR2

Not a heck of alot more MR but every little bit helps.

He said in his post he is making an FCR 3 +15 mage ring. You can assume from that it will be a -20 MW and the treatise tali...... Llewen, I thought you PvPed?

I used exactly that for my suit.

Here is the suit I built:

    Head: Night eyes
    neck: gorget MR2 LMC 8 LRC 20 P:15 F:16 C:18 E:8
    ring: Mage +15 EP: 25% DCI 10% SDI:12% LMC 6%
    Brace: ORNI
    Gloves: MR2 LMC 8 LRC 20 P: 9 F:13 C:16 P:18 E:8
    Arms: MR2 LRC 20 P:12 F:8 C:10 P:22 E:19
    Chest: Protector of Battle Mage
    Legs:fey for humans
Tali: +5 magery Library treatise on alchemy
    Lt Sash
    Tangle
    Conjuror Garb
    Quiver of infinity
    -20 one handed 15 dci planesword w/ 50 hitspell

there is room to tweak stuff around as well. im at 17 sdi and could lower it on the ring. I could also put the poison boots on or some other combo without the quiver. Good luck, I have 14 mr 70 dci 17 sdi 40 lmc 2/6 casting 40 EP +20 magery on this suit. The fire and poison could go higher but I was a little impatient on making the stuff with my imbuer.

    Good Luck...........E
