Should bards be required to carry an instrument in their hands? I was thinking about it this morning and it seems very unblanced that as a Mage/Tamer/Bard, I can sic my pet, cast a spell and peace/disco, all relatively at the same time.

    Thoughts?

I would like to see it. I would also like to see crafters be able to craft instruments with bard related mods on them. This would give 2 professions a little boost.

but on the other side of this as a mage you can cast with the spell book in your pack. With out having to hold it.

I can see something like this unbalancing bards... typically they carry some sort of mage weapon or spellbook in their hands...

Unless they made it to where you could craft instruments w/beneficial mods I don't see this as something that many bards would go for.

IE: A drum with DCI/LMC/Slayer etc...

Gotta make up for the loss of having to use an instrument in hands... Or if you have to hold an instrument give it some sort of melee DMG too. You could always bash an orc's head in with a drum if it came down to it =)

    Realistically yes. Practically no.

If a bard has to hold the instrument then we would have to require mages to carry spellbooks. This would affect all spellcasters as well. Too much change needed here.

What would be better than a requirement is a bonus to hold equipable instruments. This would be a much better change.

If it helps with roleplay or flow you can always assume the bard is singing rather than using an instrument.

    All good points.

I know that as a mage, I usually carry a spellbook, but it might not be the book that the spells are coming from. On another note, how about if tamers had to carry a "leash". I bet that would screw templates into the ground.

  6. I think you are trying to put too much "realism" into your UO thinking!

Spell channeling weapons allow mages to cast while holding a weapon, not a wand or spellbook...

Knights in heavy shining armor riding full speed on a horse... while swinging an axe...

Warriors and archers in light leather and "leaf" armor standing toe-to-toe with plate mail armored knights...

Archers shooting and reloading crossbows while mounted...

Magic rings that have HCI, but shields can't?

The list goes on and on, but my favorite one is...

Bards only know 3 songs... Grandmaster and Legendary bards at that!

  7. This one is actually real. What do you think the knight's used when the lance broke? Their sword and/or axe/mace/etc.

  8. Yes, but not while riding full speed. Horses can not run very far haul a big fat knight in armor around! And war horses were bred to be breakers, not trotters.

If the game went that way, then tamers should be required to hold a whip or leash to truely control their pet (non-mount pets)

It's not like you need a whip in your pack to get an animal to follow your commands. Your analogy doesn't work...la

Why doesn't my analogy work? Think about it for a minute. You go tame a gdragon and it's not bonded yet. How willing would it really be to follow you until it bonds to you and trusts you?

  13. Makes sense to me.

How else should a bard be able to play a tune? Whistle it, maybe?

  14. Check out Pat and Linda Parelli, John Lyons, Ken McNabb, Dennis Reis, Chris Cox, Julie Goodnight or any of the other "modern" horse trainers. The LAST thing you would do to get any animal to bond with you is use a whip.

Good point, but maybe there should be different equipment for different animals then.

Lion tamers use a chair to divide the lion's focus.

There could be a wide variety of items, all of which could be skill based.

For instance, maybe you choose to use a whip, which is very good and bending an animals will quickly with minimal gains, but maybe treats would make it more loyal and give higher gains...la

Any bard with a half-decent set of vocal cords should be able to create music without an instrument at all though so it all balances out :)

Far too "real". Honestly, if you want a challenge, soulstone your music, buy it to 20 and then try to peacemake/provoke anything.

If you require explanations for how we can do that:

    1) I sing my spells while I'm holding my lute.
    2) While I was using a bow, I would whistle my tunes or use the bow as a harp.
    3) For those that use a handed weapon, they do "blue man group" type percussion.

Very honestly: if they wanted us to hold our instruments don't you think it would have happened in the past 11 years? They like the control mechanism we have and won't change it unless something major happens.

I'd like being able to pick the songs we play, which is what I'd rather concentrate on. Like that blasted dawn's gear box that can play far more songs than I can, even with bells.

It's not really a suggestion. I'm soliciting ideas. Sorry you couldn't tell the difference and that your attempt to mirror one of my posts failed. It'll be okay. Promise.:lick:

Why bring this up and change it for everyone. Quote "as a Mage/Tamer/Bard, I can sic my pet, cast a spell and peace/disco, all relatively at the same time." Play the char the way you like and not change it for everyone here. I like the idea of not having to hold the instrument.

Settle down. No one is changing anything. It's a discussion. A lot of very valid points have been made, all around.

I personally think that sic a greater Dragon, while discording and peacing and casting is very unbalanced. I hadn't really thought about it before, but I bet that it must frustrate a lot of people who do not run that template. I'm trying to be community minded here. It just felt too easy and I wanted opinions on it. Still do.

  28. Taming isn't overpowered, pets are.

  29. yes and as soon as you post only in siege forum we shall make it happen :)

Agreed, but is a template of bard/tamer/mage overpowered considering none of those skills need to hold anything to be effective?

Yeah you would use a leash instead, unless you were taming a gdragon...which you would want something to keep the dragon in line.

The old pets were fine. It seems like GD are the main problem, especially their breath. But how to nerf their breath without nerfing all breath? Perhaps a MrTact style diminishing returns system? (breath damage is HP based)

  33. This wasn't a NERF PETS thread...
