I think being in Flying Mode, even if you are not moving, should drain Stamina. I am at the bank and see a dozen Gargoyles all flapping their wings. It is very annoying. You should only be flying when you are actually going to use it.

    Ugh, no.

It should act just regular mounts do.

Just will take some getting use to.

I could see that if a garg is stopped (hovering) for a certain timeframe then they should default to standing instead of flying (requiring the use of the abiulity to fly again), but not lose stamina for flying any more than someone loses stamina on a mount.

Well I was flying around fast it was very nice and it drained all my stamina so I had to get focus.

Was wondering if being a gargoyle means that you cannot regen stamina and need to have focus like I heard someone say about elves. I had wondered why my elven smith kept running out of stamina.

Oh yeah stamina regen armor I forgot about that. I will have to try some.

I did mention something along these lines in IRC.
The folk who don't like the KR/SA idle animations are likely to hate gargoyles.
I logged in Retribution at a fairly off-hour, and there were 3 flying gargoyles just sat there doing nothing. Not quite as bad as a dragon flexing across half the screen, or whatnot, but it's still going to be unpopular with some.

Maybe, rather than an animated hover in place, they could temporarily "land", animation-wise, then fly again when they move.
Not that it bothers me particularly, either way, but it -should- be mechanically similar to riding.

Focus 60 or SR 6 will mitigate MOST stamina loss in flight.

Focus 80 or SR 8 will mitigate ALL stamina loss in flight.

JC - I have an issue with the rude people who do not "land" when standing at the bank, too, but I do not think that the Dev's should do anything about it. Try *politely* asking the people to land so that their flapping wings are not in the way ;)

For those who find it annoying...

Chances are when it goes live there wont be as many gargoyles flying around the bank and chances are, unless you're a bank sitter, it wont bother you as much since you will be doing your own stuff.

It's natural you are seeing tons of gargoyles in the testing because people are checking it out and it's lots of people from every shard going to that one test shard.

You think that's annoying, do you realize how badly scuffed up floors in stores and homes get by all the horses and exotic animals ridden into them!

You are an incredibly helpful person so I'm going to be extra nice in this response.

You probably don't want to ask any of the 300 hovering gargoyles we're going to have on atl at the bank to land. Rude just isn't even close to the response you'll get around here to a polite comment.

As above, make it so that if a gargoyle spends more than 3 to 5 seconds hovering in a spot, then it lands, want to fly again, then hit your flight icon/macro/etc.

Please no. From what I've seen, I'm already going to need to build 40-50 points of focus into my non-warrior templates to make up for the stamina drain of flying as it already is. That's plenty of penalty. Too much, honestly.

I don't know are you going to make everyone preparing for a battle get off their mounts if they are just going to stand there for 3 to 5 seconds then? Remember this will make them slow to lift off.... like mounting an ethy....

heh. I was kinda thinking this. I can think of many situations where I might have to stand around for even several minutes where I would NOT want to have to "take off" for a quick get-away. The bank *usually* is not one of those places, tho ;)

I wish I could think of a good solution other than do you banking in Vesper. I am always yelling at my husband "WOULD YOUR FREAKING LAND?! YOUR &#(@*&$ WINGS ARE IN MY WAY!"

I like the idea of making the garg stop the animation when they are standing there for a while rather than flapping away.
They should put this for dragon animation too.
You stand still (in fly mode) for more than 8 seconds, then they go into standby mode.
    Sounds good.

There is an alternative to focus, this may be a good excuse to start using those refresh potions oO.

It doesn't matter to me how they do it, the flapping animation when hovering needs to go. Even one of two will be annoying. Stamina drain was just the most obvious to me but the suggestion to have Gargoyles land but remain in flying mode sounds like a solution.

I have been using Focus 70 and it has been keeping me going. 70 is an awkward number for Focus and I only have it that way because of the Skill Bonus's. Other wise I would be at the 60 Mark

They should just have a 'hover' mode so after a few secs of 'hovering' the wings fold in and only the tips wiggle. The gargoyle is still in flight but the 'aggravating as hell flapping' disappears.

I HATE it on my OWN gargoyle let alone others so I 'land' all the time just to stop aggravating MYSELF let alone anyone else.

This will be a real eyesore and aggravation as the world fills with more and more gargoyles. Give them a HOVER annimation mode please!!!

    *Shrug* On the Hovering .....

I don't know about the rest of UO but I find it hard as heck to get into moongates and to get close enough to open bags in the house without the silly wings flapping every time I go click on the bag.

I would think that if others experience this then after a time, maybe, most people will just not hover.

Oh can you just not WAIT until the first big ingame event when all the new garg characters come out toting super dragons with them to the non-combat event to make sure that the thing turns into nothing but a screen full of flapping wings?

It's a matter of opinion what's rude, just like some people think it's rude to talk on a cell phone while at a restaurant. Of course, my response to those people is when you stop talking to your friends at the restaurant, I'll stop talking on my cell phone. Of course, I don't have a cell phone, but these people bug me all the same. Just because you're easily annoyed doesn't mean it's rude. It just means you're easily annoyed.

I would normally agree with you, except the flapping wings can block you from being able to pick up or move things that are near the million gargoyles in question ... it would be like the person on the cell phone standing in the middle of the buffet line and not paying attention to the fact they are blocking everyone from reaching the plates because they are too engrossed in their conversation (that would be rude, yes?)

How about that they make it you can't pick up things/loot if you in fly mode?

Flying is for traveling in my eyes. :)

Imagine trying to wipe the face on a sugared up 2 year old ...

The wing flap up and down, usually, via Murphy's Law, covering what you are trying to grab or open on the down flap, so that you end up selecting the gargoyle in question, so that their paperdoll pops up in the middle of you play window, blocking you view of what you were trying to pick up. As soon as you clear up that problem and go to select/grab/open the desired item again and *wham!* The 2 year old squirms away squealing!

*rereads last post* No, they should only do that if they make it so you have to dismount to loot/pick up, etc.

I pretty much agree that just making the idle animation not have the flapping wings part would be lovely.

flapping wings, aye.. problem with vertigo there..

but for me the bigger issue is if you are trying to scan something with your cursor and the wings cross it's path, it breaks the "reading" time.. and you can never get an accurate check of the item.. perhaps something can be changed in the code for that? Imaging trying to grab gold at a champ spawn? Every time someone's wings cross the path of the gold, your cursor looses it's connection to the pile. Using ctrl-shift is no good.. imagine how many dozens of bars pop up!

(sorry I'm sure there's a technical way to describe that, I hope you know what I mean).

An eloquent little piece of writing! The solution is Shift-Ctrl bringing up stable tags for everything. Another solution is to provide Circle-of-Transparency type toggles for screen wing animation.

*laughs* that reminds me of trying to drag the bar of a tzuki wolf! Grrr! They always bow and I end up grabbing my own bar instead! :cursing:

For me it is more a matter of getting a little motion sickness (it is annoying too though :D). I had the same problem with the "breathing" pets in the old 3d and KR clients . But I am hoping that it is just a phase and people err gargoyles will settle down eventually instead of hovering all the time.

I agree, the wings should STOP flapping when you're not moving. You could even still technically be in flying mode so that when you move again your wings start. I don't even care if the animation change is fluid... all the wings around the bank on the test server is annoying... and there aren't even that many most of the time :p

Even my OWN got in the way!

  33. It is annoying. You cant see to do anything. It makes it very laggy. When people are sitting on a mount they are doing just that sitting, nothing on the mount is moving or flapping. However as people have said when it goes live there wont be so many sitting around the bank doing nothing. I agree though that if they are sitting the wings should not be flapping, just like when you sit on a mount you are not doing anything distracting. Also why not use your reg bank instead of that one for the time being or a bank that gen has no one around it. You can travel to any bank as a garg you dont have to use the new one.

Sounds good. A "perching" mode.. visually resembles standing but mechanically identical to flying.

I think it would be useful if the wings tucked back whenever someone was in hover mode at the bank or wherever. It's almost hypnotizing when there's 5 or more of them flapping in synch, seriously I was nearly nodding off when I was playing late lastnight lol.

Actually I was slightly tempted to write "belfry" on a bit of card and stick it over the bank sign, because I think they look more like bats than gargoyles when they fly ;)

I'll be banking in Fel with a can of raid in my pocket. It won't kill em, but it's the best way to test if they can cough and fly at the same time...
