BOS, What are your thoughts now?

Discussion in 'UO Oceania' started by Amathist of PoC, Aug 28, 2008.

  1. I was just wondering what people on Oceania now thought of the BOS changes made a few months back. Do people still buy them? Quest for the? or Even use them?

Do BOS still have a use within the game or has the change made them pretty much a none used item?

I also started this thread on UHALL - http://vboards.stratics.com/showthread.php?p=830476&posted=1#post830476
oh and for those new BOS = Bag of Sending.

They're a stupid addition to the game and I'm glad they're no longer worthwhile for gold farming.

  3. I use to hunt alot of paragons and in Illishnar so I found them useful for transferring the arties out and the gold from champ spawns or when I was trying to raise funds for something. Now I just find my characters are pretty broke cause I can not be bothered traveling in and out.

I do however realize the market was so flooded with them and people where ...I guess you would say price fixing them. And that some people used them for scripting . So I know a change needed to be made I just wonder if this was the right one.

Unless the aim was to make people stop using them as that is what seems to have happened so I don't know but I miss being able to go out raise some gold and not have to waste my limited game time going in and out in and out of a dungeon.

i feel the same ammy, i used to go hunt paras alot. blood dungeon was my second home and being able to send the money to the bank was great and made it easy to top up my bank when it was getting dry.
Now the only way to have a good hunt in there, with out having to go back n forwards is, i stash the gp behind a wall and when im done i go get a bug and hope no ones discovered my bounty in the mean time.
BOS's had their pros n cons now they are just cons

If there was truely no other way to stop the gold farmers then i would be happy with the removal of them. But we've seen this is not the case. I personly used BOS almost daily and it has changed my playstyle alot. Im finding it much harder to keep my funds at a steady amount, and have been slowly losing money since.
I do however feel they should never have been rechargable.

To be honest with ya. They nerfed BOS to try and put an end to cheaters.

Now I know alot of pvmers. Who actually play to have fun and relax. For example go out and hunt dragons and collect leather. Go out and actually spend hours mining or actually just go out and collect meat to cook. yeah I know but some people like that. Honest players also for that. For example..I right now in this stage of gaming am Really enjoying fishing. Can't do it in real life to hot. About 120 average high, so in game its a great time to talk to guildes...drink..and just fish.. Might catch a big one right?

    To Each there own Right?

with the nerf on Bos that ended faster than dropping a hot skillet. Some people can say they are glad it ended but seriously it was So easy to transfer 20K to the bank with just a click.

For everything thy devs hurt with pvp..they also hurt things for pvm too. Like it or hate it..Its the rules of the world that change..

  7. Perhaps if they a) made the quest harder to gain the bags b) made them non rechargeable like Jahira said then perhaps that would have been enough to slow down gold farming scripters. I feel the current changes have kind of punished everyone.

Perhaps making them personally blessed to that charactor. So A. You cant sell them or trade or anything and B. You have to go get it yourself :p It didnt stop the scripters they just changed tactics. So they were punished for a week until they devised their new script, everyone else is still being punished.

I personally think with the way inflation within the game has gone, any new playing coming to the game have a hard time catching up, I know I used bos to help make money a bit quicker to purchase items I needed. Think that was 20 months back according to the old paperdoll.

We can make more and more things idiot proof but the universe just makes bigger idiots. Same goes for gold scripters...

  9. I totally agree with this perhaps its another topic but I know from experiance of helping newbies that they are very over whelmed by prices around the place. And they feel they will never have the good items unless they play 24 hours a day.

But at the same time the same said newbies often want an instant 18 x 18 or castle??? I remember saving up for my first tower and it being an awesome accomplishment and I mean one of those little tiny stone towers. BUT I also remember when 1mil was an obscene amount of money...I miss those days.

I don't know if the BOS is the cause of inflation or even if it was a mistake but I miss it from time to time when I am deep down in a dungeon and getting a good battle going....and have to leave to bank it just wrecks my flow..lol. But I also have limited play time so anything that makes my time more efficient helps me but that doesn't mean it is a right choice for everyone I guess.

I think the removal of BOS was a step away from making things idiot-proof, ie: it's not making things simpler. Idiots don't deserve a break if it means dumbing things down at everyone's inconvenience.

I don't think rehashing the BOS system was 'punishment' for anyone so much as a step away from the gold-GUSHING-faucets which plague this game. They're still there, just fewer of them are so easily farmed.

What they really need look at next is cutting down the loot across the board. One or two quality item drops from time to time are better than corpses crammed so full of crap that it takes over a minute to sift through the garbage.

A bird, no matter how purple it is, shouldn't be carrying 100 stones of loot and 2k+ gold. A troglodyte shouldn't be carrying an ornate axe; a stone axe at best, maybe some kindling, rocks or meat/veg.

Anyhow.. that's another rant for another thread.

  11. Well I just listened to the Town Hall meeting and BOS changes where brought up and what Jeremy said made sense and I now agree that BOS changes where needed and will hopefully better our economy.

That is so true but, I remember before I quit years ago, liche lords or ogre lords and dragons were by far the best loot. Now people rarely ever visit any but the dragons for leather.

Bos does make it rather easy to bank some things but its more convient then anything, I mean I can carely a lot of gold with my necro...

Up until greater dragons (speaking of dumbing things down) went in, I used to hunt in Destard on my fighting chars.. now, I wouldn't bother unless I was on my shepherd. I didn't bother with BOS as you could recall in & out.

Actually now that im thinking more about it, I mainly used Bos at swoops to get cash when starting out and in Blighted Grove because I killed thrashers for leather and got the odd arty drop. Using BoS on the leather meant you could stock up very fast. But makes things too easy. I dont know if Greater Dragons are are good thing either, I mean isnt the Anceint Wyrum meant to be the hardest to kill...yet they are now easier then GDs, well they seem to be.

Ancient Wyrms have been beefed up, not sure how they compare (I don't have a greater dragon to test it). White Wyrms used to be the top pet due to their high inherent magery. With no breath attack plus bonding & training of other high end pets, WW's are seldom used anymore. WW's could do with a frost breath and/or paladin skills as a trainable ability (to counter shadow wyrms' necromancy).

I know im getting a little off topic now, but this has been a bit of an issue to me lately. New players just seem to want everything now now now. Theres been one new player around recently who has been walking up to people at Luna asking for gold and help. I decided to help this player out and purchased him a full lrc suit and gave him 20k to help start him out, but he just wanted more.
The next day he came up to me with a scrappers and opened a trade window with it, shouting "cheap for you 4mill". A little perplexed i explained it wasnt worth nearly that, and why was he selling it. He quite honestly told me that somone in his guild lent it to him to help him out... Sometimes i just feel perplexed by people.

I rarely help newbies out with cash or valuables.

It can come across as a bit mean or miserly, but I think equipping them with certain gear robs them of an important part of the playing experience. I rather guide them through some of UO's more frustrating and confusing newbie challenges, or introduce them to stuff that most people wouldn't think to mention. If they stick around for that, then usually I'll help them with runebooks, spells, lrc etc. Usually the ones who don't stick around for mentoring aren't genuine newbies and are just after quick cash.

  18. BOS are an example that EA does not pay for quality designers.

BOS did what? They made it so people could do less for more.

People complain the immersion is being taken out of the game and then you get crappy designs like BOS which mean you dont even have to recall to the bank or run to the nearest bank in Ish terms. You just keep farming arties amd sending them to the bank in a click of a mouse.

BOS are the poorest design and an example that people at EA don't think things through. The problem that scripters highlighted with the design should have been so bloody obvious its not funny.

So EA not thinking through the design of BOS end up punishing their loyal customers as they become lazy and dependant on them and once EA are sick of the problem they caused through crappy design they have to nerf them and punish the loyal customers.

The scripters went back to recalling to their houses with the chest locked down on the steps, it didn't inconvienance them other than slow down the gold flow.

BOS are another nail in the coffin of a once great game.

    Cheers
    Shane

Yes! There is a huge difference, and that's not what I meant at all. It does not matter how long individual people have to play. Being lazy is being lazy, no matter how long you do it for.

Just to add, its really not that hard to run out of wherever you are and recall to a bank, then back again. The places you CANNOT do this easily in are meant to be like that for a reason, like Ilsh and t2a.

I think my main problem is, i was used to them. If they never existed in the first place then i wouldnt have a problem. I hate to compare myself to a spoiled child, but its like talking my lollies off me and telling me that i cant have them any more :sad4:

  25. I think that was my issue too but listening to Jeremy at the Town hall changed my mind and I now see the removal as good thing so am over it...what can I say woman are fickle at times LOL.

When the BoS change was introduced, my account was on hiatus. When I got back I knew there was a change, but I didn't know what it was; I couldn't be bothered to go find out, so I spent the first month asking over guild chat. No one else knew what the changes were either, we all just had this vague idea that the bag may or may not be "broken".

To get from my hunting spots to the bank and back takes roughly a minute, maybe two if I zone out along the way. If I was to move out of the Fel dungeons, that figure would drop to about half a minute. Granted, there aren't that many places where you can enjoy easy kills with a fast spawn rate and high gold return, but let's face it, on Oceania it's not like you need to worry they'll be taken up by other players.

Really it still comes down to how fast you can make your kills, and whether or not you can cast recall. Granted, without the bags, some hunting spots are no longer viable.

Yeh, I understand this. Blame the idiot who came up with them in the first place though hehehe, not the poor Dev's that had to clean up their mess. Seems to be the way of UO Dev teams, they spend most their time fixing (and copping the blame for) the errors of the previous team lol.
