Why dont they just create a classic shard from every eara of uo [i.e. one that is pre each expansion] leave them running for a good few months and advertise it and see which one attracts the most player and if it really does bring more people back.

Bingo, that way they can see what most people want and create that shard, granted there are many oppinions on what one is best and what should be fixed but when the most popular shard is chosen they can then make a forum here for bug fixes. The truth will be in the amount of players playing that shard.

Because that would take many years to build.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that the tremendous amount of work involved that would be needed to do something like this and the potential fallout (bugs) involved if something were to go wrong would prevent anything like this from ever happening. Also, supporting such a vast number of widely different shards with different rules would be nearly impossible with the current staffing.

Indeed, that would take an inordinate amount of time and money to set up. They don't have backups of "the way things were" from before every expansion. Which means they would have to hand-code every era. Which would a.) take forever and b.) mean absolutely nothing else in the game would get worked on, including new expansions, bug fixes, events, etc.

They should just setup a quick Pre AoS type test classic shard. watch it for a couple months and after everyone realizes they can never relive thier early days of UO they can close it. maybe "hire" some college gaming student interns to run it for free so it dont waste time and money.

Maybe im looking at it the wrong way, in a business sense, as over here we are made by law to keep a recold of every transaction and every modification made for the last 6 years.

I was thinking of it in that sense that they must have a hard copy of every expansion saved on a hard d and every bill for the last 6 years by law.

It was just a good sugestion, would be awsome if they could. Id surely check out every eara prior to aos as my bro got me into UO when he saw the AOS box in the computer shop and i watched him play it and i got addicted :)

It makes perfect sense to keep a history of financial statements and transactions, as that is a linear record. A game, on the other hand, is a continuously evolving single thing. Making a law requiring copies of every version of a game to be kept for X number of years would be like making a law requiring clones of every existing human at various stages of their life to be kept frozen in stasis for X number of years.

If you read just about every post ever made by the Dev team on this subject you would know they have no saves of the coding, or any server side information, they will have to build it all by scratch. The only information they might be able to get their hands on is the client coding from those era's...if they have a copy of the disks laying around, but I doubt they do and it would not really do them much good (Aside from having to decode the client and the fact that the client is really useless with out the server).

Not sure where you are that you have that law....but I wouldn't think it would apply in this case anyhow, considering how often they make changes it would really start to eat up more space than it would be worth.

Im sure every time they bring out an expansion or a publish they keep a hard copy of the one before.

They can roll servers back days [most iv seen is 3 days] so they must have back ups.

True they might not have that many years worth but if it was me id still have to hard drive from the beta saved :)

It was just a brain wave, if its not possible thats ok. Would be a bloody good idea though if they could.

The back-ups are very limited, I think they keep the week before it is rewritten (might be wrong on the exactness of the backups but still) But in the long run they did not, and most likely still do not, keep the information for a long time. Not to mention the server roll backs are not actual coding saves or changes...they are juts data saves, so in theory they could never backup the server side coding as there would be no reason to roll it back...they just need to isolate the problem in the code and change it.

It would be a good idea, it just is not possible with how they did/do things. =\

With out warning they just need to do an ingame survey filled out by only accounts active for over 30 days. Gleem all that has been discused and allow each account to prioritize a list of related wish list CS attributes. Last get 200 words to say why the first is first and last is last.

There are current game mechanics world control on the current shards.

Just like gotta be naked as a new born like to race change.

    Backpack empty, period.

Getting into the Abyss is not just a simple walk through the enterance. A new world added to each shard that carries UO community choice CS attributes.

Just by simply replacing the new lands gold as loot to copper would be life changing. No insurance under current game mechancis if no to rare little gold. Better controled risk vs reward loot of nothing more then current creatures with new artwork.

Simply they can just create a land within the current shards using current game mechanics with little tweeking. A land that meets the current active populations vision. Those not so loyal can just be heard on a thread here that have more then a few dozen post.

    1. Pick any shard.
    2. Create a Guild.
    3. Decide on the rules. e.g. no insurance + only NPC bought items.
    4. Bingo. A "Classic" shard in less than 1 minute.

This way you can prove conclusively the "massive" pay to play Classic demand really exists. Just do it.
