Here on Stratics it is mentioned that ships move with different speed:

Tokuno Boat - Turn Delay: 3 - Drift Speed: 3
Gargoyle Boat - Turn Delay: 1 - Drift Speed: 1
Orcish Boat - Turn Delay: 2 - Drift Speed: 1

I tested it, and the boats all move at the exact same speed. Hence my questions:

    • Where did Stratics get those numbers?
    • What is "Turn Delay" anyway?
    • The boats react to a navigation command with a very long pause. Is that intended?

I can tell you more: the old ships move faster than new ones!

I have noticed that the old boats move faster than the new ones. I've even taken my old boat out pirate hunting together with a stranger who had a new one.

It worked out very well actually. Could be better (still working on tactics), but the speed made cornering the pirate very simple.

I tested this the otherday my tokuno ship vs. a garg ship. we sailed in a straight line (going south), we were exactly even the entire time(about 3 minutes). the only thing i can think of is maybe drift speed means the speed you sail out while crippled and under emergency repairs.

I sure hope they bump up the speed of these boats. As is, I'd rather run around the lands than sail around them.
The new ships should move much faster than the old ships IMO. These ships should be faster than horses too.

Big ships move slower. Of course a huge ship loaded with heavy cannons isnt going to move as fast as a speedy little schooner. That seems to be what was intended, that the bigger the ship the slower it moves.

Faster boats would make the fishing quests less of a pain.

There could be a quest for a ship jet engine. *chuckles* Yeah the boats should be faster to be more playable.

It may be my imagination, but worth testing? I was sailing using 'forward' command while I marked a map, when I gave the map and said 'start' I'll swear there was an upshift in speed.

Its not a bug, its a FEATURE. Its easier to navigate at slower speeds and your alot less likely to hit anything. :)

In my testing, I was left uncertain.

Turn delay: there does seem to be a little difference here, but with the little bits of lag I couldn't be sure. But at times, I thought there was a definite difference. If there is, it's not enough to mean anything tactically. And I think that's the intent. If there is in fact a difference, it needs to be about doubled at the least.

Drift speed: I too am not sure what this means. I did think I noticed a very small difference in the speed at the angle that you can do when using mouse steering. But again, not real sure. And again, if that's what it is, it needs to be boosted.

Overall, it could just be my imagination.

I love the idea of tactical differences. Especially in maneuverability, gun capability, and hold size.

"You dumb b*st*rd, it's not a sailboat, it's a schooner..." Anyone? (Sorry, had to and if you knew what I was saying hopefully you got a little chuckle for the day)

We ran the same tests and came up with the same results that they new ships move at the same speeds when commanded. Unfortunately, since we moved to the orc ships we haven't been scuttled in some time on anything other than the orc ships and cannot remember if the others moved faster/slower after emergency repairs.

"Drift Speed" should be how fast your ship moves when its damaged, if what the devs have said is true.

Drift is when the ship is moving at an angle or to the side... Left or right.

If you say Drift Right or Drift left you'll see.

At any rate... One would think the Gargish ship could keep up with many of the others moving at any way since it's a 3 sailed ship.... it has 3x the pull and the pull of the wind in it's sails is distributed over the hull... not being a tactical genius or anything it wouldn't take much to figure that even with the added bulk of a gargish ship the advantage of those sails is greater.... think about the difference when you look at the tokuno ship vs the orc too..... the orc ship has one sail .... the tokuno 2 but the sails aren't as flexable... if you are getting into realisms though think about what a traditional tokuno vessel is made from as well..... not your heavy woods like an old english ship... very light reeds and bamboo...... making it ideal for speed though not as durable perhaps.

    Just my opinion and observations.

we had 3 boats side by side last night

    2 garg 1 tok boat
all gave commands at the same time
all moved at the same speed, no separation between them at all.

didn't try it with the old boat in the mix

    So not working as intended?

Just tested a Tokuno Shift vs Gargoyal ship by saying 'Drift Right' they went at the same speed, Just like forward/back. It's 100% broken.

Again, its how fast they move when damaged heavily. You know how when you get damaged enough you move really slow? That. Test that.

I don't know.. so far as I know nobody has ever actually tested it because they're so damn hung up on "drift speed" being something else entirely.

You know... Looking at the size and sail configurations, they're closer to Schooner that Galleon
