Can golems + 100% poison weapons still be used for training melee skill?

Last time I played this was the go-to method for training melee skills. Was this removed from the game?

If so, what is the recommended method for increasing melee skills from 50+?

Have a friend tame a wolf spider and beat on it with a poison weapon instead.

golems are now damaged with poison weps i believe. Wolf spider is the way to go now. get some +15 jewels made and go to town. i believe you have to be above 75 for the wolf spider to work well.

or just raise your tinkering to 40 (buy it up) and heal your golem as you go.

....golems are now 90% resistant to poison as opposed to being 100%. They get damaged and need to be repaired by a tinker Getting a tamer to tame a wolf spider works...as well as getting a spell weaver to lure an ice ogre lord works. With both the wolf spider and the ice ogre lords your skill needs to be around 75. Typically I buy skill to 40 ( or as close as possible) train to 50 i.n Abyss on slugs ( goes fast usually around 10 mins) then then put on bracelet and use the ice ogre method to 120. You must be guided to the spell weaver and the spell weaver must stay logged in.

Or you could do it the really old fashion way and gain skills by actually playing the game. I know everybody just wants instant gratification these days.

I hear ya frodo... but when they dumped the anti macro code and then added pink scrolls skill training changed for ever. Old fashion lockpicking took months to go from 0-GM. I did it the other day in a few hours using nothing but uoa and three sets of boxes.

Created a legendary imbuer the other day 0-120 in about 30 seconds...again not breaking any rules.

What you are implying is like playing at Wimbledon TODAY with a 1970's Borg racket. The game changed...so why would you play it the old way

Because just maybe it is fun to play a game and learn it all the while you are gaining skills, you know the way we did it back in the dark ages. Pinks are all well and good but to let the game just play itself and do everything for you then what is the use of playing it? Call me old fashioned but I don't play UO for instant gratification I play it to relax and have fun. If having fun means going out on day one and killing every boss out there then people are to damn obsessed with the end game and not how we got there in the first place. I wish there was a way UO could verify that yes I trained this skill to it MAX so I can copy in on a special ACCOUNT BOND stone sold by UO to another char.

But I have fun instantly creating a legendary crafter and then making cool things for friends! And I have fun grinding out skills fast so I can go do what I designed the character to do!

Or in the case of Lping I decided to take an seldom used template and turn it into T-mapper and move it to another shard to help a friend dig maps. I could have done all those thing the old way,,,yes....in 6 months or so. We live in a society of HERE and NOW! I guess I am guilty of it as well, but I am old....so I have a reason to want to do it now... :)

@TimberWolf use whatever excuse you want because the only person you are cheating is yourself. Using old as a reason for the now justification is kind of funny because looking at your picture means I should want everything two days ago. In my books you a a youngun, wait till that stuff on you face is a lot longer, fuller and is all white then come talk to me about being old.

Wait a few more years. I retired in 93 long before UO even came out and my first CPU was a C64 at $595 or I could have paid $1000 for a bare bones Apple, you do notice there is nothing before or after the word Apple.

You got me...I retired the first time in 99... but I got you CPU wise.. my first was the vic 20! :)

But seriously Frodo....I dont need reasons or excuses to use this program or that program... cause bottom line...what we call legal and illegal isnt really, The UO police dont really exist and Mess isnt really Madam justice of the supreme court. It is just a Game! So you play it your way and I will play it mine!! All that matters is that you have fun! Thanks for the discussion.....

Personally I prefer to just play. On shards not my own I take the person and go to 50 in Old Haven using the "fast" gains there. Meanwhile I loot everything I need. Then after 50 in my base skills I travel off to Tokuno and head into the desert there where I kill orcs and Deathwatch Beetles and the Hactchlings. This takes me up to 75 or 80 at which point I go to either Wrong or Shame and finish it off on some of the "newer" mobs and get some decent loot to build a suit with.

Personally I don't think there is anything "wrong" with either version.

Some folks (particularly some of us who have been playing since 97/98) create new characters for specific purposes. Our enjoyment comes not from training the character, but from using that character for the purpose for which it was created. In those cases, we want to train, scroll, and suit up the character as quickly as possible by whatever (legal) means we can... That includes mythic tokens, blues, pinks, and power training techniques.

Some folks, regardless of account age enjoy the process of training a character up through regular game play.

Arguments such as "or you could just play the game" seem to insinuate that there is some inherent value in one style of playing over the other, which I disagree with. Both styles are "playing the game" in the way that the individual player has decided suits them best.

    i got ya both beat.
both my parents worked for IBM for over 30 years (1970-2005) so i had the very first IBM computer 6 months before it came on sale to the public.
i still have that computer AND the very first IBM laptop (that thing is massive and heavy!) packed away for a rainy day.

Assuming you mean you have nothing since Tokuno I would recommend an upgrade...you are missing a lot of content....but for training go with golem and keep a tinker handy for healing

If you don't have access to Tokuno something is WRONG with your account. Everyone should be all the way up to ML...

However there are always Lizardmen in Illsh as well as going to the Cave in Illsh where the ratmen are and killing Earth Eles... also if you go south and west out of Compassion gate across two bridges there are area's in there which aren't too bad for folk in their 50's in skill. I don't always recommend this as well you can get a nasty surprise in Illsh with Paragons. And there aren't wandering Healers or very many stationary healers all about in Illsh you have to hoof it all the way back to the shrines if you die.

I also highly recommend training up your carpentry/lumberjacking and mining in Illsh at the Meer Village. If the Dire Wolves are too much for you there are 2 options... 1 lead them into town and near any of the meer.... as they will kill them for you and you can still loot them and take their hides (spined leathers are always nice)... or go down to the pixies to the west of the Meer Village along the mountain and the Pixies will kill whatever is bothering you.

This is also an awesome place to work up your taming skills.

I still have my C-64 and replacement C-128 pack away. I did the C-64 because I couldn't afford an Apple much less an IBM. Back then an IBM cost the same as a small new car, LOL. Did you have the 8" floppy, my god those things were huge.

that would have been either a mythical token to start you at 90 then eat 6x5.0 SOT's to get ya to GM

    or

buy to 40, haven fast gains to 50 then 14x5.0 SOTs to 120.

LMAO Those were huge damn disks. In the Navy we had stand alone drives and one took a special 12" disc that was in a hard cover. God those things were so out dated by the time we got them.

My Uncle was an inventor for IBM I can't recall what my Aunt did there but I know she worked there as well. My Uncle went on to form a company with a few of his IBM buddies and they installed a computer system at the White House if I recall... that was a few short years before he passed away. But he gave my Mom our first computer... was an old IBM he'd helped to invent. He also invented something he called a "Doc in a Box". Which from what I gathered was a palm held something that traced medications and interactions... or something of that nature.

I used to have a pre-patch Golem with 100% Poison Resist that was fully trained (GM Wrest/Tact/Anat/160+ Resist), but accidentally released it :(. Now i use a fully trained Wolf Spider, works just as well, but i need my Tamer on for it.

Best place to train LJ, is Gregorio the Brigand outside of Skara Brae near the Ranger Huts. Gregorio doesn't take damage if you're not on the quest to kill him, and if you have him Disarmed, he pretty much can't damage you if you have 70 Physical Resist. He's also great for training Anatomy and your pet's Poisoning skill.

Want to know something ****ed up? The computers that control the U.S.A.'s nuclear ICBMs, still use those 12' floppy disks. Look at 2:40 in.

Did not know that about Gregorio.... good to know. I'll keep that in mind next time.

As for the missiles well... we all know what a joke the whole thing is anyway. Much as I would hope we could do away with 99% of the BS and really work on making the world a much better place human nature says it'll never happen. Since the dawn of time Man has proven himself weak and damned. Some people believe it comes from the primitive nature fight or flight responses and survival of the fittest in nature that fills us with hate, contempt and rage... as well as jealousy and everything else that causes us to wage war upon one another... who knows. At some point you would think that our will, determination, logic and sanity would win this war of primitive thinking... Perhaps I might see it in my lifetime however I doubt it given the way the world is today.

I often wonder if it's some new insanity that causes folk to go all postal ...... or if it is the availability of perverse technology in the hands of a lone few psychopaths... and that years ago there were just as many psychopaths as today they just lacked the technology to do the sorts of things that today's psychotics have. Whatever it is I think that the idea of a future for the Earth such as that which Gene Roddenberry envisioned is beyond our capacity as humans to achieve. We have yet to win the war on racism, sexism or bigotry. Certainly we have come a long way... but we still have a very long way to go yet. Not only do we still need to conquer all of those things but we still need to work together to save our planet... we are still destroying our world at an alarming rate. Until we learn to put an end to greed we will never change or move forward.

I think Garriott when he built the premise of the world of Ultima Online believed in Roddenberry's future and ideals... he failed to account for the flaws of humanity.

EA games however believes everyone that buys their products is a greedy lying cheat... and they treat everyone accordingly.
