Why waste stable slots on that rare pink bunny when you can have fluffy greet you at your door and make you feel at home? Coming soon, you will be able to bind pets to your home. For a fee, a [insert skill here] tamer can purchase a Domestication Kit used to turn a wild animal into a domesticated one.

The pet is then transformed into a deed only redeemable in a home that you own. You will be prompted to name your pet once redeemed and although it can be returned to a deed (for moving purposes), the name is final and the pet is bound to the original redeemer. The pet will always be in your home and cannot leave.

Pets respond to commands once settled (after 7 days of feeding and attention) and do not require upkeep to survive after the initial 7 day settle period (although you may want to get some treats to encourage fido to do some tricks). The size of your home determines how many domesticated pets you can have bound to it and only certain pets can be domesticated. Price of Domestication Kit TBD.

Did anyone think of this before and if no, why not?

  2. It sounds pretty cool, I know I once wanted a herd of cows for my farmer but I also wanted to be able to milk the cows. And having a cat greet me at home or a dog bounding around the yard would be awesome.

This is something I've put forth as a proposal a few times, only as an expansion to Herding.. chiefly as a balance thing; Taming has enough perks where as Herding could use some attention.

Basically any one-slot, no-taming-requirement-to-own animal could be herded and broken in (domesticated) like cowboys/wranglers/jackaroos/drovers might do, doing a straight % check against your Herding skill. Failing might upset the creature enough that you need wait before trying that one again. Once domesticated, the animal could be then traded to other characters.

A domesticated animal could basically do all a pet could do, except fight. It would have all skills set to 0 and untrainable, plus have a yellow name of invulnerability and a [domesticated] tag.

An owner could train it, however, to do various tricks.. like play dead, stay, follow, roll over, fetch, beg, etc. Most of the tricks would simply be going through the animations/sounds each creature has, except 'fetch' which would be based off the old taming command from years back.

The creature would be bound to a household that the owner character owns, a limit of one or two per character.

Offhand that's all I can remember from my previous posts.. I might write up something a bit more cohesive later.

You can milk cows now, just use an empty pitcher on them. :D

Best way to have animals stay at your house is to first pen them in, then tame/release each one once per day. Animals released on one day will be there after server-up the next day. Shame it can't be done with Herding alone, unless you want to go out and get new ones every day (and happen to live on a facet with cows.. can't gate wild animals).

I would prefer the name not being final and the pet not bound to one character only but to the home itself (meaning to all characters using that same home) and I would also like to be able to feed it (even if not essential).

Sounds interesting. I would want a gaman.

Also, others have said in the past, houses should have a hitching post that leads to the stable.

I thought the final name would be best since the pet has to get use to it (like IRL).

  8. I think the best way that this will work is to tie the animal to an item you place in your house. Like a dog house. This would facilitate "re-deeding" of your animal.

  9. I so did not know this...I am going to get me some cows for my chef she likes to use harvested ingredients.

I'd like some kind of house tile (or the whole house if it's too complicated) that auto-refresh wild animals, so I could have a flock of sheeps in my house and get wool and use that spinning wheel for once.

    Well I love this Idea.....

I'd like to have a pet spider... that goes around my house... lives in a nice web... It would be awesome...

Also think nice dire wolf would be fun!... Lives on a bed of straw...

How about a leopard living on a piece of fur....

You could set it to "guard" and would make noise or whatever if someone tried to enter....

Don't think I'd like a pet Plague Beast Lord though... It might devour half the things in my house!....

For all the necro's out there a pet bat would be fun.... Or a skeleton perhaps...

    Just a few weird thoughts.....

I like that idea! I always keep two or three rats locked up in the cellar of my pirate house, but sometimes they just vanish.

I would  having a house cat!

I like the idea about skellies and bats for our evil homes and castles, hehe. And rats too!

What about having the number of house pets be relative to the number of vendor slots? For example, it'd be nice to have a small group of cows and sheep to harvest resources from.

I would like to see player created farms and such but there has to be a limit so people don't abuse it like they do with parrots. Perhaps they could be like vendors and even possibly take up a slot.

They could be like a personal assistant (kinda).

That used to work a long time ago, sorta. I had a pet walrus in my house. Well, that was until I decided to practice magery by casting chain lightning on myself without thinking it all the way through. Rest in peace, Wally.

My guild also used to keep a balron on the roof of our keep, and a lich lord in one of the corner rooms. I don't remember why. But it was a brilliant idea at the time.

  23. This could be very fun. I am imagining my witch/warlock character having a "familiar" or totem spirit. Like a bat, or something. I also envision certain pets obeying special commands like fetch, guard the door. There could even be special commands for individual pet types. A bat could "roost" on the ceiling. Cats could hide under/behind/on furniture. Just think of special houshold items such as a scratching post, or doggie bed. "pet" skelatons could crumble to a pile of bones when its master is gone.

Good Idea, they just need to make them Yellow like parrots that way no monsters can attack them from outside. Then you could even let them go outside your house for a bit but you could call them back in. But Id say you leave them outside for more than a few days they decay.

We created a small tailor shop with sheep pens on the first floor. After taming and releasing a herd of sheep in there, they've remained for about a week or more thus far. The continue to produce wool, but they do make quite a racket for the poor tailors who must work above. :D We're contemplating placing another house for cattle pastures. Anyone know if you can fill barrels with milk?

It's seriously a fabulous idea but... There are some issues that might rise from this :

    - EA starts to publish "Booster Packs" for UO with such content, milking us harder than with the Sims 'Booster Packs' even. Btw no I don't play Sims and never will.

    - Kids abusing their online pets and eventually their real life pets. You don't believe there's no 14-15 year old playing UO, do you now? And in the Sims your character cannot toast a fluffy bunny with magic or make it Bleed.

    - Pets having inappropriate names.

    - Exploits having to do with skill gains.

    - Monsters outside house constantly targetting pets(therefore amassing nearby spawn next to your house and spamming sound effects, among other problems).

    - Pets following you around under the Felucca ruleset(some houses still there but also in case you want to make the pets follow you around everywhere) shoving you and blocking movement.

    - People using pets as "tags", parking them in ghost form outside their "target's" house naming them "This guy speedhacks" and other silly stuff.

There must be other more or less stupid reasons than those, but it's usually such reasons that ruin the implementation of the most fantastic ideas.

  34. Love the idea of house pets but as for making a pen and keeping a "wild" animal in it. I know 3 friends who got banned over this and several other pulled to a gm to "discuss there illagel behvaior. As it is an exploit of the game to have a wild animal pen in home. I know folks who got 3 day bans just for having the what looked like a animal pen in the home. Just a warning to watch your back when restraining "wild" pets in your home. Is that pet really worth risking a suspnsion or ban?

Wow, really? Well, I'm thinking I will risk it as it is for RP decoration purposes. If they really want to drive me away from the game, they can confront me on this.
