He is an elf emissary that through a tragic/bloody sequence of events and him being at right place/time has been declared king. Odd to me to have elf king but I dont know much beyond that.

Who said Lord British had the right to rule he wasn't a native either....actually Elves are natives..they've just been in hiding for a long time.

I think the people around back then proclaimed Lord British the king...unlike what Casca did

    Correct.

There is a huge difference between being proclaimed king by the people and proclaiming yourself as king.

    A brief history of Casca.

1)In the beginning, there was Ricardo.
Ricardo: *is a good and virtuous man who runs around stealing people's underwear and selling it back to them at a profit* Hello there! Who wants to learn how to be a thief from the handsomest man in Britannia? la
    Players: Me!
Ricardo: *pinches a couple of pots and pans, inadvertently creates a rare item by giving his hat a quirky alliterative name, learns to poledance in his free time and steals... the entirely wrong thing*
Ophidians: *hiss* GIVE OVER US THE ARTIFICED SCION *invade*
Terathans: You ate our eggs! Monster!
    Ricardo: Well now. *is arrested*

    2) Ricardo was sentenced in the Court of Truth in Yew. Presiding over his case was Casca the Prosecutor, apparently shipped in from Heartwood just to show that elves can be as difficult as anybody else.
    Casca: hello
    Players: Who are you?
Casca: A man with exceptionally shiny hair.
Players: Oh. Well. I brought you some evidence. *hands over Ricardo's toothbrush, garter and lifesize Mondain statue*
Casca: I hope that we can continue our relationship over the coming months!
Players: ...are you asking me out?
    *the trial starts*
Casca: *speaks for a ridiculously long time and does several legal backflips that nobody I've spoken to actually understood* I pronounce this thief guilty!
Inu: *is Inu* *goes up in smoke*
    Casca: ...
    Ricardo: ...
Players: *are squelched and thus cannot ellipse*

    3) A bunch of stuff happened. Casca became Casca the Ambassador, presumably so that he could dazzle Britannia's allies and enemies alike with his shiny elven hair, and spent several months standing in the castle and doing nothing.

    4) Casca was put on the ruling council and, if I recall correctly, became Lord Casca. Why? Well, I'm not really sure, so once again I'll blame the shiny hair and the big impressive vocabulary. Also, the fact that, unlike seemingly every other noble in Britannia, he didn't spend all his time standing outside Haven waiting to be escorted to the blacksmith's may have had something to do with it. We need nobles who can find their own way to the blacksmith's. Even if they smell like elf.

    5) The Royal Council meets for a picnic.
Lady Unidentified: Why, your hair is looking particularly shiny this morning.
Casca: Thank you. It is my elven pheromones that do it.
Followers of Armageddon: HARR *glass and blood flies everywhere*
    Casca: Good heavens!
Followers of Armageddon: You're coming with us!
    Casca: To exchange beauty tips?
Followers of Armageddon: Yes. Yes, that's exactly it.

    6) The players tracked him down and found him sitting around in a dungeon doing nothing.
Casca: *damsel in distress* HELP ME OH GODS IT'S AWFUL please help me
Players: Why are you still dressed in fancy clothes when you've just been attacked and elfnapped by an evil cult?
Casca: Be quiet! Scientology is a legitimate religion and it's changed my life!
    Players: ...
Avery: *is a fine upstanding member of the royal guard* Greetings! I am also here.
    Casca: *points* Murderer.
Avery: Yes, well, we all have our flaws.
Melissa: HALLO, I AM A BLACK-CLOAKED SEDUCTRESS AND I WILL DESTROY YOU WITH MY CRAVEN FEMININE WILES. *gives the players a pearl necklace* *not like that*
Casca: *weeps, proclaims himself too damaged to walk even though he's already standing up, begs the player for help, is truly regal material* SAVE MEEEEEEE~

    7) Time passed.

    8) Avery: *thud* Oh, hello.
Ricardo: I AM THE GHOST OF- oh, never mind. Hello.
    Sherry: Squeek! Squeek!
Avery: What's that, Sherry? Timmy's in the well?!
Ricardo: oh my gods that thing is ruling us

    9) Casca: THE ROYAL COUNCIL of whom i am the only surviving member HAS CROWNED ME KING. I WILL RULE OVER YOU BENEVOLENTLY AND WITH GREAT LOVE.
    Players: *sharpen daggers*
Casca: I can see you doing that, you know.
    Players: *sharpen them louder*
    Casca: ...

And that is Casca in a nutshell. I'm looking forward to seeing where things go from here. My characters are positively rabid at the thought of an elf on the throne, but who knows? Maybe he'll do a good job. Like I said, if they had to pick a random noble to put on the throne, at least they didn't pick a New Haven escort.

That depends...hair from which part of the body? I have surpassingly shiny nostril hair :D Can I be king?

Awesome summary btw! Wife was laughing so hard that I looked at her screen to see what she was laughing at heh

    Addendum: Act 6, scene 11:
Players: You're not asking us to carry you out are you? Find your own way out, you pansy elf!
Casca: Erm...wait! Hey,look! *pulls out a parchment hidden somewhere on his body* How about you just give this to the captain of the guards? He'll come for me and will reward you handomely.
Players: *Collectively pinches their noses and takes the soiled note warily* Well, since you said the magic word "reward".

Players dissappears in puffs of smoke and quickly reappear in Britain. No doubt to reduce their exposure to the note and to avoid speculating where Casca hid the note.

Players: Hail captain of the guards! I have brought you a dirty and smelly note from Casca!
Captain: *Gasps* We shall set off at once to rescue Casca! *Pulls out a shiny 25,000 point spring cleaning ticket from somewhere on his body*
Players: *mutters* This guy's probably related to Casca...
    Captain: Here's your...
Players: *Snatches the ticket and Kal Ort Por*
    Captain: ...reward...

Is Casca still an NPC or is he a player now that is ran by a dev? Or both?

On a less biased note, a new Royal council member was elected by each city after the previous council was slaughtered. They are the ones who elected Casca. So he actually is the rightful king elected by the representatives of the people.

Did they actually get player guilds in those areas involved in electing the enw Royal Council, or are they all NPCs as well? I am guessing the altter, but the former would ahve been neet. At any rate, thats not a bad point about legitimacy. They should publicize that more (and really, you'd think he'd be interested in spreading it around) - the (tiny) press release that appeared in my client opening screen was a little vague on how exactly he was apointed monarch.

The new Royal Council are all NPCs and, to the best of my knowledge, have remained anonymous through this whole series of events.

Um, I don't like any of the three choices. You should be more careful in putting your polls together.

British was never my king. Casca is not my king either.

But I do care about the storyline, which is why I'm answering at all.

Lord British is the true King. Casca, I feel, squirmed his way onto the throne through dubious means and is not worthy of the crown.

He reminds me a bit of King John in the Robin Hood fable, just waiting for some swarthy Robin Hood-like fellow to come rain all over his shady parade.

I thought the election of the new Royal council members was held in secret for their own protection. Not really an election if you don't know if anyone actually voted at all.

  27. I hate to bring it up again, but my sister Abigail LeFay was the true heir to Lord British's throne.

"I will follow Lady Abigail LeFay" was not an option in the poll. :sad4:

I cannot answer truly on the choices of this poll. I DID rally for a (new king,) yet I know nothing of Casca except from a few short news reports.

    3. I care very much about the storyline!
    2. Lord British is now an astronaut and I doubt very much that he will return to this game.
    1. Casca has given me NO reason or sensibilty to fight FOR him.

Casca certainly does not occupy the throne except by a few statements he has made, which I could have made, telling people that I was their new Queen. (Few would have believed, just I am in disbelief.) Monarchs are made through displays of Valor and this one has shown little yet, but lip-service.

He has no importance in my gaming experience, has done nothing for the town where I live, has done nothing of importance for Britainia. He is a (no-body.) Let him give an interview to one reporter, (though I'd love to do it,) give it to anyone, and tell us more about this supposed King.

Surely the throne, as an institution, means something? Does a new king really need to earn your trust anew or do they, by the throne itself, gain all the goodwill accumulated over the ages?

Now I was as skeptical as any, but Casca has given me no reason to distrust him and our land is indeed in such dire need of leadership after so many years adrift and so long awash in war.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go see if poor old Clanin needs tending.

    Hail Folks,

Casca began as an NPC. On Baja he is currently played by an Event Moderator (EM). It is my great hope that the return of "a Lord British" as an NPC or EM played character remains a possibility. Though I agree it is unlikely that Richard Garriott will ever reprise his role as Lord British, unlikely is NOT impossible, so hope remains.

Lastly, I am in favor of our land having a true King. If it is not to be Lord British, it is my hope that the Dev's will provide us another true King (or Regent) and one who will occassionally appear in our world and interact with our people. Casca may be a usurper. He may be acting against his will under the influence of another. He may believe he is acting in our people's best interest.

Only time (and the Dev's) will tell.

Lord British left us to guard an object in the Ethereal Void.

    *gives him the finger*

(And hey, Draconi, if you're reading this....Nah, I'll start a new thread for that.)

Lord Casca either appointed himself King, as the sole-surviving member of the Ruling Council....Or, hand-picked a new Ruling Council, and had them appoint him King under the "only realistic option" theory.

Either way, the only possible result is to, also, give him the finger.

Were it an option in the poll I —or, rather, my character Galen (because in the real world I have plenty of issues to deal with without worrying about fictional politics)— would have voted for the following.

    • Scale back the national government.
    • Have the national government consist of two related-but-separate entities: A loosely-structured Ruling Council at the top, making political decisions.
    • And a tightly-structured bureaucracy to make day-to-day governance decisions and to implement policy as smoothly as possible.
    • Make more decisions at the town or regional level rather than the national level.

In other words, I think Britannia's best option is to step "backwards" to a more Feudal form of governance. Let's face it....The more progressive, modern, nationalized form of government that Lord British tried to foster, inspired no doubt by his experiences here in the "real world," hasn't served Britannia very well. Nationalized government over a big territory works when the central government is stable. (For example, it has a written Constitution with elected rulers, or a clear line of succession.) Not when it consists of a few nobles, a mouse, a wizard in a coma, and an elf who may or may not be in league with 3 would-be Ultimate Evils!

Interestingly enough, this (localized government) mirrors a proposal I made many years ago for role-playing on the Lake Superior shard....Basically to abandon continent-wide RP structures and to instead roleplay at a more localized level. Europa's role-played mostly at the local level for years now.

    -Galen's player

Lord British sacrificed himself to remove an imensely dangerous relic from our world knowing He might Never be able to return. Others have failed us since his sacrificial act.

I am deeply pleased that almost 89% of respondents remain loyal to Lord British.

I believe these are profound statements. For a certainty, Casca has not given me a reason to distrust him. Toss the coin on that. Give me good reasons to call him "my leige," when every part of my life in Ultima basically has had nothing to do with a "King."

I picked reagents when young, and took it all up from the bootstraps. No-one will I bow down to and call "Liege-Lord" 'less there be some history of their Honor, Valor, Courage, fortitude and ability to lead into a new age.

The country-side is too vast, the evil forces we fight are too strong for ME to unwittingly give alliegance to "a self professed King."

Besides, the stars are NOT in alignment for a new King at the moment. Casca might eventually become that King that is desired. However, you won't see me bow to him yet. I bow in truthfull (respect) to guildmates, peirs, and friends.

I live on Verity Island, and if the (King) wants to show truth, that is where I'll be, by the (King's Telescope.)

I am new to the storyline of the game but from what I have read and seen it would look as if Lord British has touch the lot of the peoples. I for one am a Baja baby and respect the throne (not always the person in it). I will fight for anyone who holds that postion for it may have a vital play onto what happens in my land of Baja. The only way to loos my respect is to wrong my family(guild) or my homeland(Baja). With that said put who you will in charge and I will fight, do one of the lather and I will fight you.

Seems a lot of people over look that the announcement of Casca as King was phrased as King Pro Tempore. Meaning "King for the Time Present" nothing about that sounds like he's a permanent solution...with lands invaded maybe the Royal Counsel decided that a unified figurehead was needed, how do we even know Casca is pulling the strings? He could have been set in place as nothing more than a yes man, or maybe he's a gullible fool who thinks he's in charge but really isn't...

Fact is we don't know any of these things yet....I say let time tell..
