Has anyone thought that Chrtistmas music gears would be pretty cool? You could have maybe ten or twenty different gears, and of course make a few rarer than the others. A perfect christmas idea!!

Do you mean music gears that we could put in our dawn's music box that would play a little christmas jingle? :) If so then yes I would love that! :) Though I don't see EA paying for real christmas songs so they would have to make up their own little christmasy songs! :) What would be even cooler is if they added more functionality to bards so they could select different music sheets to play. So they could play the christmasy songs in town or provoke monsters with christmasy songs! Hehe :)

I don't celebrate Christmas. I want Festivus music gears and a pixelated Festivus kelp plant. We who celebrate Festivus mostly worship Poseidon, so we insist that smiths be able to craft Tridents immediately. Christmas is soo 2000 years ago...

Christmas music would not fit with UO, being as Christianity is an Earth religion and has very little resonance in a world with sorcery, necromancy, and a more secular humanist leaning.

We should be content with the few trappings of the holiday we have (again, mainly generic secular decorations) and hope for more of the same this year.

Since UO (as a game, not Britannia) spans Earths various cultures and religions, favoring one for a holiday would be inappropriate.

some of us like to escape the world of reality with its politcal correctness crap about who we should appeal to. dont like it go elsewhere. most christmas carols where written in the age surreally potrayed in this game, there meanings and lyrics have changed numerous times. examples being: auld sang lang and carol of the bells. as for copyright infringment, most christmas songs are public domain and standards in the music community. i for one would like to see an idea like this put to use.

i want for the cranberry sauce for my turkey.

They have been giving out christmas gifts for years now how would christmas songs be any different?

How does a song about santa claus have anything to do with christianity?

If they wanted to give out gifts that had to do with other religions I would be all for it. I think people get way to easily offended over everything. No one can be free to say how they feel because they might offend someone else and I think that's sad.

You will not find anything with 'Christmas' in the title of anything given out as gifts over the 12 years of UO. They have always used 'holiday'.. Holiday tree etc.

They know they have to be multicultural, and have avoided religious based holidays. In fact, one could argue they have focused on the Winter Solstice more than anything. So putting in a bunch of religiously themed (as most Christmas songs are, baring ones mentioning Santa) songs into UO would be completely unethical unless they were from a broad range of religions and winter holidays.

Santa isn't Christian.. Not that I bought Santa up in an earlier post.. In this thread at least, don't get me started on the 'Santy' thing. ugh.

UO is arguably set in the medieval times, a fantasy version.. So it would be circa 1300 - 1600 in relation to Earth. We would scarcly recognize any holiday songs from that period, most of the ones we know were written in the 18th-20th centuries.

Ok so getting "Holiday" music gears would be ok to you so long as they are not called Christmas?

Now go visit the exodus dungeon and tell me where I can find that in the 13 - 1600's??
    ===

I think its a great idea, and there is a lot of music favoured this time of year that has nothing to do with Christianity.

I could be wrong but I thought years ago they were christmas trees then they changed them to holiday tree. And even tho they call it holiday everyone knows it is christmas items. What other holiday do you know of that uses a sleigh and reindeer.

And the songs would be tunes there would be no words. I just don't see what the big deal is.

    Far as I know
there was no magic circa 1300-1600, or 1000 - 1299 or Stardate 2461. Nor were Jaugernauts , elves, goblins or gargoyles around in the middle ages

It's a fantasy world in which anything is possible.

Who really gives a rats behind if we call them Chirstmas songs, Holiday songs or December songs, the idea is great.

To be frank, the idea might be "nice," but is ultimately pointless since you're the only one who can hear the music box when it's playing. Put in a CD and listen to whatever holiday music you want. ;)

As far as you know, here in the 21st century, with hindsight. They wouldn't have burned all of those heretics for using "magic" if they, themselves, hadn't thought it to exist.

And where do you think elves, goblins, and gargoyles came from in lore?

Wow, think inside the box much?

UO is a medieval fantasy world, as I said. The closest analogue to Earth's history would the middle ages, i.e. the early 2nd millennium. Nowhere did I say that Earth had magic or juggernauts. However, as Ra pointed out, who actually knows…

Earth religion has no business in UO. Go to your church/synagogue/mosque/temple or wherever you worship enjoy that culture, and more power to you. Or, just go to your local mall when you can hear Christmas music on an endless loop from October 31st till sometime in January.

So I guess when they do things for easter you don't participate.

There are many christmas songs that have nothing to do with religion. Here comes santa claus, jingle bells, silver bells, jingle bell rock, I'm sure there is more just can't think of it. There are some that say christmas but don't include God but I'm assuming the word christmas offends you so I didn't add those.

And does ANYONE feel for those of us who work in those shops??? Who hear the same 5 songs over and over and over again. from anywere to 8 to 12 hours a day? 5 to 6 days a week!?????

When we wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat trying to forget about the christmas song that tried to kill us in our sleep???? Hello out there :p

Seriously tho. Back onto topic :D I think its a great idea..But instead of Holiday,Christmas, pagan, December music...Why not just have NEW MUSIC :D

I dont know if I can stand having my box having jingle bells sung by 10 different people in an order I can never fix :D

Christmas doesn’t offend me in the slightest, adding it somewhere it doesn't belong does, however. Those songs do not have any relation to UO or its themes. One could argue that jungle bells would work, and I would concede that point.

The closest UO has to Santa, historically, is the Lord Nicolus character from '99 which TPTB have dumped in favor of "Santy" *shudders* Other then that, Santa has no tradition or meaning in UO.

As for Easter, neither the bunny nor the eggs have a legitimate claim within any modern religion, aside from neopaganism - and even that is iffy.

The only other holidays that have been officially recognized in UO are Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day (and only in '98). Both were celebrated with only their secular commercialized trappings. One could say that the US 4th of July was obliquely recognized in '07 with the introduction of the fireworks, but it was kept generic to not insult the citizens of the roughly 193 other countries on the planet.

OSI and EA did the right thing by keeping things relatively neutral respective to holidays.

Wow! Glad that I got a good discussion out of my original post.

I enjoy Christmas. I enjoy Christmas carols. I enjoy that UO gives us holiday gifts each year. I enjoy the music box and music gears. The Christmas/Holiday gears would bring all of that together!

As far as analyzing what century someone thinks that UO would be set in if it was real, blah blah blah. The truth is that a large portion of the UO subscribers DO celebrate Christmas. You get the UO holiday gifts because of Christmas, not because it's winter. You get a hoiliday tree with ornaments as an option because it's Christmas, not because it's winter. You get wrapped present boxes because it's Christmas. You also get pointsettias (none in Medieval Europe, by the way), Christmas Cactuses (well, I guess cactii), eggnog, gingerbread houses, gingerbread men, the reindeer and sleighs because it's Christmas. And UO DOES have a tradition with Christmas, such as the Coal gift ("you were naughty"), and I'm lucky enough to have a rare called "Christmas Carols".

I appreciate that you would rather there not be Christmas gifts of the sort that I suggested. I just feel badly that you felt it necessary to overanalize a simply idea that I believe a goodly amount of the UO populous would enjoy.

Additionally, the American Thanksgiving has Christian roots. Not sure if the current event is on the Asian shards as well, but I don't think it's a coincidence that we're having the event now, during the American Thanksgiving (and not the Canadian Thanksgiving celebrated a month and a half ago). I hope the current Thanksgiving event doesn't offend you as well...

Bad idea... halloween wasn't even over before the christmas crap came out, I dont need it shoved down my throat everywhere I go for 2 months of the year for one freaking day. Sure I don't have to hunt for the gears or do the quests, but then again, I just may have saved some poor dev hours of work too.

I think this is a great idea.

Since currently if you cant access the dawns box, you wont hear the tunes. Therefore it doesnt effect you.

As far as Easter not being claimed by any modern religion? Are you serious? Have Jewish people come forth to claim it as their holiday? Maybe the budists? No, clearly this is earmarked for the rebirth of christ. I know this and Im not even religious.

And as far as UO having generic holidays? What other religion has a sleigh and reindeer? Who else decorates a tree? Some could be argued as generic, but not those.

I really would not mind any type of new gears to be added for players to collect, trade, sell. Be it Christmas music, pagan festival music, death metal, country tunes, patriotic songs from around the world. It does not matter, just give something to the players, more things to collect the better.

Heck give bards a primative way to write gears or sheet music (maybe no longer than the longest song in the music box) to play in the music box or from any instrument.

Wow, reading comprehension is slipping in the 21st century. Sad.

First off, decorating trees is decidedly Celtic and was adopted by Christianity to help win over the pagans. Santa, reindeer, sleighs, and snow have absolutely nothing to do with Christianity, and are mentioned nowhere in the Bible in relation to Christ's birth (the true meaning of Christmas, as everything else was added millennia later). Gift giving isn't a Christian concept either, nor is it restricted to Christmas (obviously). Is the ‘winter holiday’ in UO ‘Christmas’ – eh, one could argue that both ways till death.

If they add more songs they need to be unique to UO, not recycled Earth music (Rule Britannia excluded…) We know they have decent musicians, let’s hear their take on winter… For the argument that the music box is only heard by you, the response is simple: Play a CD while playing UO. Same difference.

In relation to Easter, I referenced eggs and bunnies - NOT the holiday itself. Again, you will not find mention of a rabbit hiding eggs for children to find in the Bible, or any other religious text. Rabbits/eggs are symbols of fertility and were seen as symbols of spring and birth. Once again, Christianity adopted pagan customs during its expansion.

Also, if you hadn't noticed, there is no mention of 'Thanksgiving' anywhere in the game other then player or EM activities. Eating turkey at this time of year IS decidedly American; however they exist elsewhere on the planet and have been raised as food for hundreds of years. If you really want to get technical and purist, turkey would NOT be served for Thanksgiving - You would be serving duck, geese, venison, and shellfish. The turkey tradition was not formally introduced until 1947 (326 years AFTER the first feast in Plymouth).

UO must be inclusive in the modern world to appeal to as broad an audience as possible, adding religion specific content will not foster that. This is why it has never happened in the 12 years UO has been active.

I would suggest that some of you bother to research your arguments before posting. Ignorance isn't bliss.

While I agree that the barding skill is in dire need of love, I just don’t see player created music making it into the game. This could be a copyright nightmare for EA when bards across Britannia start playing songs by their favorite artist, and the overly litigious RIAA comes calling… (Don’t doubt they will, they’ve already tried to force cell phone carriers into charging you each time your phone rang using a song)

Well, since you took the liberty of attacking first...

“Ignorance isn’t bliss.” It took me a long time to piece together what you meant, but I called a few of my smart friends and did some research on the internet. It took a bit, but I have come to the conclusion that you were trying to be clever. That’s one for you...

As far as the reading comprehension part is concerned, you may have me there, as I skimmed through most of your dreadful, uppity posts. The point that you were making, as far as someone of my limited intelligence could tell, was that Christmas has no place in the UO world that you enjoy. The purpose of MY post was twofold:

One was to address that whether or not the UO “holiday” gifts actually say “Christmas” or not, they are, in fact, Christmas-themed. And while I’m sure that you were awfully proud of yourself noting the pagan origination of many of our Christmas traditions (decorating evergreens being the case in point), the truth is that anyone today that decorates a Christmas tree does so because of Christmas, not because the Celts did so (although curiously enough I did see one tree lot with a sign saying “Pagan Ceremonial Trees for Sale $12.99).

Secondly, my initial post was to express MY desire for Christmas-themed music gears for Dawn’s Music Box. That is what I’D like to see in MY UO world. From the responses to my posting, it seems as though many people agree

As far as “Christmas versus Holiday” gears or whatever crap they give us this year, while I’d like to see UO have the balls to call it what it is (a Christmas gift), I could live with the holiday part. While I’ve never met someone, Christian or non-Christian, that takes offense at hearing “Merry Christmas” instead of “Happy Holidays”, I now see that these people do exist, and it sure appears that they’re unhappy, petty, little people.

In closing, I’d like to address just one more thing: obviously you’re at least reasonably intelligent. I have news for you though, and that is that it’s a big club, to which many belong. Don’t think that you’re extraordinary because you’ve read a few books...
