    Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

it's time for new, bigger backpacks. I am a mage, a fisherwoman and a bard. I need a full set of super slayer instruments, some normal slayer instruments, a full set of super and not-so-super slayer books, a Scrapper's Compendium, a fishing pole, a crystal ball of knowledge, a harvester's blade and some containers for items that are neither blessed nor insured. Oh and of course I carry a healing stone, a spell stone and an arcane focus gem with me, too. I also have some kind of a scroll, a Signed Tuition Reimbursement Form, which I somehow can't get rid of. Three ethereals, so none of them gets exhausted (poor little ethereal Llama). A Bag Of Sending, of course, too. A pile of gold because the Bag Of Sending does not work on items in a sub container. A row boat deed and sometimes a dry docked ship. One or two Crystal Balls Of Pet Summoning on a warm sunny Sunday afternoon. And that Snowy Scene of Moonglow because it reminds me of better days - as my good-luck charm.

The problem is: I can't find a thing when I need it! :sad2:

I'd understand if a bigger backpack is not possible, so let me suggest three more options:

    • Insurable containers, that won't help with uninsurable items (like reagents or potions) but would be left on your corpse with the insured and blessed items that were there before you died.
    • A fanny pack, attached to the character like the normal backpack.
    • Trouser pockets.
    Thanks for listening.

    Kind regards,

kRUXCg7, one of your beloved customers.

Hmm I would hate to see the issues this could cause. It might work for reagents or bandies but for normal stuff, should be in the backpack

I am not inclined to see any issues. But if I have my spell books in pouches or bags within my main backpack and then die, all spell books are cluttered everywhere in my main backpack. So I try to keep all insured and blessed items in my main backpack, which is just too much to handle (as stated above). I have a good feeling about GrimmOmen's and Logrus' skills of not creating any issues while still fulfilling this dream.

I tend to get round problems like that by leaving the stuff I don't need for the current trip at home.

I rarely need a dragon slayer instrument while fishing for eg.

If there is a better example of how itemisation has completely ruined this game than the OP, I have yet to read it.

    We are all mad.

Aye it sounds like your carrying too much stuff while your out PVM/PVP. I like Petra only carry what I need for the current 'mission' as anything else is just clutter.

I do all the stuff the OP does and my backpack is always half empty. :)
My ethy never runs out of stamina. I have named chests for my chars where i keep the stuff sorted for different activities. I try to keep the backpack as empty as possible so that i can farm for 60k gold before i have to run home to unload.

"Signed Tuition Reimbursement Form" If thats the form from the travesty quest you will have to call a gm to remove it. I had one stuck on my backpack once too.

step 1: dump everything in your bankbox and only take out what you need for what you're currently doing
step 2: go to bedlam and finish the quest to get rid of the signed form

Now you have a empty backpack without all the clutter, problem solved.

No, just no. We do not need larger backpacks.
#1. you shouldn't be carrying all your slayers on you all the time, there is no need for that, only take what you plan to use when you go out to fight.
#2. pet ball isn't needed to be in your backpack since you cannot summon into areas where you would use your pet.
#3. go turn in the tuition thing in umbra already O.O
#4. you really only need 2 Ethereals unless you plan on running for like 2 days straight.

And finally, while I did say that you don't need all those slayers on you... I do have to say that the weight of some instruments are too high in my opinion. While you don't need to be carrying multiple types of slayers, you often do need to carry multiples of the same type, and when these slayers are not flutes of renewal, they can often keep you from being able to hold a decent amount of gold and items.

All that needs to be done is a strategic weight reduction on some items... and that's my opinion. As for you, you just need to put some stuff away when you go out adventuring, there is no need to carry everything you own in your backpack.

For me, the game is, as so many people stated, a sandbox game - and I think I am not torturing anyone. Here is the deal: I don't want to jiggle around my equipment all the time. I don't worry about how to effectively and efficiently pack my doctor's kit like in real life (or school bag or lunch box :) ) because I can't carry around a ship, twelve instruments and lots of furniture like I can in Ultima Online.

I could do that, sorting out items I don't need *right now*, of course. But I am not the efficient player, I just go out, seek some friends and see what happens. I'll go to Destard and only five minutes later I'll go somewhere else. I know most of you are already geared to the specialized means, so you only need your arachnid slayer because you know perfectly that for the next 45 minutes what you will be doing is hunting arachnids. I am not saying that you shouldn't, I am only saying I am not, at least not all the time. And if logging in after a 4 weeks pause, I don't want to sift through my bank accout and fifty boxes in my house to search for that arachnid slayer flute. I am rather pleased to find them all neatly organized in my backpack.

I am also not so worried about carrying capacity (and if I was I should get a new bag of sending), I am worried about the user interface and how to see those tiny objects laying on top of each other.

Please understand, I am not talking about efficiency, I am talking about how to interact with those tiny windows aging from 1996 or so. We have a plethora of new items, of slayers etc., I am capable of carrying ten instruments and ten spellbooks and enough gold - and I am capable of carrying 125 items. It's all perfectly within game rules, but why should I not be able to see what I am carrying?

The blacksmith, tailoring, tinkering crafing menus have been enhanced, too. And that was worth a lot - I don't want those old sliding menus back.

Please, people, please: I love you all.
But please - stop telling me what to do or not to do in game, I am not cheating when carrying 10 instruments and ten spell books, all I ask is for an improvement to an age old user interface. And the past has shown it is possible to improve on many things.

If I am asking too much, is another concern maybe, but telling me to play differently, asking me to change my play style is a bit much, my dear friends.

The EC, in list or grid view, is your friend whether or not you choose to hotkey all the equipables and/or set macros by instrument type.

*dbl clicks mouse forever on posting list*

I agree on a bigger bag. I wanted a sub-container that would only hold blessed items

*hears a muffled sound in the distance* USE THE EC!!!!!!

For those of us who will NEVER use the EC....(One reason being the neon rubber chicken in someone's stables I just read about) I feel the op's pain.

Though I don't agree with the Op, I think the backpack size is just fine. Mine gets rather cluttered depending on what character I am playing.

For those of you who say *Don't carry so much*....while I agree only 2 ethy's are needed at most, I only have one and I run from town to town, rarely using moongates or recalls and it never runs out of stamina, but some do so I can see needing 2, but not 3.

I lost alot of items when I let my houses fall when I left 4 years ago and am now re-building my inventory, but when I had everything, I had a full row of runebooks on the top of my pack...a mini rune library if you will, to all the interesting locations I found in my travels. Of course I had the standard Tram/Fel towns/dungeons as well as interesting/unique locations, places you couldn't get to without a rune etc.

On the bottom of my pack I had my spellbook collection. Always have a boat, scissors, dagger, house placement tool to check bank balance, interior design tool, at least 2 pet balls (not every location is blocked by these) band aids, a pile of fish steaks because I didn't want to waste time creating food, a pile of apples and raw chicken to feed my pets, ethy llama and at least 2 empty backpacks to sort loot and such.

It's tricky juggling all that in the CC backpack but it's possible as long as you stay organized. The op clearly isn't organized, which I totally understand lol, and when you die and res your ring/bracelet and book you had equipped will be UNDER one of your 40 rune/spell books in your pack, that's a given.

Even with all this I like the size of the backpack and wouldn't change it, though I will have to get better glasses soon :)

this tread reminds of past threads from tamers saying they wanted more stable slots because melee players get to have slayers of all kinds. It was obvious then they never played a melee template because if they did the would realize how hard it is to find they right weapon for the right mob. example you can take an elemental slayer to the elly dungeon but it will not do as much damage as if you where to use a poison elemental slay and wait we are not done yet now you also have to find each slayer weapon for each mob and then its base damage has to be for each mob such as fire cold energy poison physical etc. and after all that you have to repair them none stop so go looking and looking for repair deeds. Or you could just take 1 pet and kill everything in the dungeon and never repair it or your armor and most of the time not even die while wearing a high luck suit. You also have to ins all those items just for 1 dungeon no need to ins a pet.....

after you spent years finding all those weapons dont forget you need petals potions pies grapes apples fruit bowls balms aids etc.

I am a tamer and the more time I spend playing the more I use him because its so much easier to get ready for a hunt and I get better loot.

for those that say your bringing to much what about events? we never know what we are hunting so you have to brings as many slayer types you can....:sad3:

Do I feel uo is item based nahhh we need to make so you also have to have different suits for different types of game play ohh wait we are now getting fisherman suits berserk suits WTF :gee:

No need to do any of these
    Go to your house
Load your backpack with 125 items ( make sure you can see the item you want to remove).
    Equip a non SC weapon
Cast recall and weapon will fall into your backpack, backpack will show 126 items.
Remove the item you want to get rid of. Throw away or place in a container or lockdown on floor.
    Now clean up your backpack.

  17. or play the EC and stop asking them to change the classic client. plenty of backpack room and much easier to find junk without spending hours organizing it.

    ...

    ...

deal with having a tiny little cramped UI for containers.

Grid/list view = WIN and you can even have both with classic container graphics around them with Pinco's UI... best of both worlds!

    lol, what a ridiculous post.

Just cuz you CAN carry everything doesn't mean you should, or that its smart to do so.... as you've already concluded yourself. But instead of adjusting your "play style" (lol what? carrying every conceivable item is a play style now?), like the vast majority have been doing for a decade, you're asking them to change a fundamental element of the game itself that most don't have a problem with... whilst vehemently refusing to even entertain any common-sense suggestions to avoid the issue you're having and treating them as an attack on your "play style?"

    Oh, UO.

The only thing backpacks in old client need is to be a lighter color like the old Christmass boxes..
That brown is just to dam dark at times.

This is one of the many reasons I wont use EC.

If I could go into my daughters backpack when she comes home from school and have all of her pens/pencils/homework/lunchbox etc. neatly tucked into little boxes it would be awesome..unfortunatly it doesn't work that way.

I love the CC for many reasons, this is one of them. A backpack does not have 2x2 inch little squares it in available for easy sorting.

I play UO because of the REAL feel to it...the fact that I can go pick cotton, spin it on a spinning wheel to make thread and use that on a loom to make cloth. That *real-life* feeling is what I like. The fact that we have to tend our plants to get them to grow. Raised garden beds, while a neat little feature, takes away from that *classic* feel that I love about UO.

I won't take sides, I agree the EC is nice in some ways...but I won't ever use it, that's just my opinion.

Fairly poor reason, then, as I believe the EC has a "legacy containers" mode to remove the grid view.

And this is why people should stop asking for changes like this to the CC..

It's really pretty simple.. if the small backpack is a deal-breaker use the EC..
If you prefer the CC no matter what cost.. use the CC..

I'm not sure why we keep seeing devoit users of the CC asking to udate it and de-classic it.. The MORE devoit users of the CC will just scream "Don't touch my CC".
And to be honest my sympathies lie with the MORE devoit.. evem though I don't use the CC at least they seem to have a point about maintaining the "classic'ness" of the CC.

    Just my two cents.

  25. two words... legacy containers. it's exactly the same container system that the CC offers except you can toggle it off when you want, which what dermott was saying.
