Ok, starting a new, fun (read: not designed for uberness) character on a new shard to be self sufficient. My idea is to make a tamer/warrior with the following skills:

    Tamer
80 Animal Taming (99% control of 5 frenzieds or a couple Bakes)
    110 Animal Lore
    110 Veterinary
    Warrior
    115 - [Weapon Class Skill]
    115 - [Weapon Support Skill #1]
    115 - [Weapon Support Skill #2]
    75 - Chivalry

The Weapon Class Skill is either Archery, or Swords/Mace/Fencing. I am leaning towards Fencing as I've never done it before. The two Weapon Support Skills will be a mix of tactics, anatomy, bushido, parrying, etc.

So, what should I choose for those remaining three skills? Please keep in mind I probably will choose fencing over archery...

    120 Bushido
    120 Swords/Macef/Fenc
    99 Necro
    85 Animal Lore
    86 Taming
    60 Chiv
    50 Veterinary
    720 pts
Get a ring+brace with +15 veterinary on both of them in case pets die. 99% chance to control frenzied ostards and 98.8% chance to control bake kitsunes.

EDIT: The idea would be that you're doing the tanking while the pack churns away the enemys' hp. Heal with bandages if pets take damage, if they die just run away, rez and heal.

Alezi, doesn't he need tactics? ^_^

    I'm still thinking...

Okies, I might do something like this...

    115 Melee
    100 Tactics
    90 Anat
    90 Heal
    65 Chiv
    105 Taming
    110 Lore
    90 Vet

Use a ring with 30 skill, a bracelet with 15. This would allow you to use a cu sidhe - much better tank. You could also rez your pets with enhanced aids. Sick cu, EOO, concecrate, and whack away.

With a Cu, this is less necessary, but Bandage Healing both self and the pet doesn't seem like a good idea.

I don't want to discount any of the suggestions given, and I appreciate them all, but two thoughts:

    1) I kept the animal taming low because I don't want to train it too much, and because I just want a "fun" character for controlling a pack of frenzieds, or maybe two bakes if I need more "tank" styled pets (more HP).

    2) The ring/bracelets are definitely reasonable ideas, but I am trying to design a template with as little reliance on special jewelry/armor as possible. Though, I will need +animal taming to tame the critters I want (bakes require +80 as a minimum), it will only be temporary while I am out taming. This character is the only one I am putting on a shard, and so self-reliance is a must. I won't have lots of gold nor an Imbuer (don't even have the expansion). So all I will have available is what I loot or find on the ground.

I'm really just looking for the two most "required" weapon support skills. Tactics seems like a must, but I don't even know if that is true.

Thanks again for the responses, thus far.

One of the main obstacles to overcome is to be able to keep both your pets and yourself alive at the same time, it can get tricky.

Say in a champ spawn you'll have 20 different monsters attacking each member of the pack and yourself, so you have to be able to juggle between keeping each one of them alive while staying alive yourself.
Same goes for monsters that switch targets.

dude, as a vamp without tact/anat you wont be leeching enough.

you'd also need parry or healing to effectively tank.

    seems broken, sorry buddy.

Though he isn't going for uberness, and it's not what the OP has asked for my 2 cents is to do something like:

    Maybe garg (for winged speed)
110 -120 Arch (or throwing, or fence if you insist!)
100 mage (for ranged healing where needed as well as gates etc etc)
    100 tactics
    50 med
80 (to 110 with jewels for stable slots/pet diversity?) tame
    100 vet
    100 lore
70 chiv (EoO, consecrate, remove curse, dispel evil)

All for 700-720 skill points. Very flexible, not uber, but capable of damage, healing etc.
Might be worth having some fc/fcr, but this is built on the proviso pets tank, where you have difficult enemies use magery for healing.

Ditching magery to remove ranged healing (other than chiv, which is poor!)

    Maybe garg (for winged speed)
110 -120 Arch (or throwing, or fence if you insist!)
    100 tactics
    110 med
    100 vet
    100 lore
    105 chiv
80 (to 110 with jewels for stable slots/pet diversity?) tame

Idea here is pets take agro, you heal them, use whirlwind/hit area/holy light spam for AOE during spawns.
4/6 casting will allow you awesome heals for you and emergency pet heals and sweet holy light spam. need 4/6 and high lmc, with a little stam regen.

As you are likely to be fencingwithout parry, don't really need much dex, mainly int and str and some ssi on the weap.

sounds like nice idea to me )

let us know how you get on in a few weeks/ a month?

As an aside, had you ever considered usig 90 bushido and just rocking with a lesser hiryu, vet and lore?

Thanks for the suggestions, Garm. No doubt, the biggest obstacle will be deciding who takes the damage (me or the pets). My original goal was to create a character for running with a pack of frenzieds (so fun!), and figured, why not add a fencer for pure damage numbers. Plugging in the numbers to the pet control calc. showed me I could also control bakes (more HP), so that becomes an option also.

As of right now, I am building up the taming skill (major bore). Once I get that up and tame a few decent pets, I'll start working on the other skills and actually start hunting. I will be sure to report back on my findings, though I warn you not to hold your breath(!). Training taming is just such fun...

Hmm, that's true. Well, my archer/tamer uses 4/6 casting for chiv heals. If you can manage 4/6 fc/fcr, something like this might be awesome:

    120 Melee
    120 Parry
    110 Tactics
    110 Lore
    105 Taming
    90 Vet
    65 Chiv

Good defense, good offense, good viability, and cu tanking power. No skill increasing items required. If you do decide to use skill increase for your taming skill, then add some meditation to your template. Use imbued jewels with 1/3 on each, then imbue your weapons and shields with 1fc. With the right suit, I suspect that this template will work like a charm.

I'm intrigued by your idea and may make a char on a new server to try it. What I don't know is how aggro works in UO - I've been back for about 8 months, but playing only casually and always solo. Would (non-uber) targets frequently switch to your critters and off of the player?

I think for base skills I'd try
    110 fence/swords/mace
    100 tact
    100 bush
    80 animal tame
    100 lore
    80 vet
    80 necro
    70 chiv

The stratics calculator still has 99% chance to control bakes and frenzied ostards with 80/100. I'd get an imbued ring/bracelet combo that brings me to 99 necro.

Typically, no. Unless they have an area effect ability.
Paragons and Bosses tend to be the ones that target switch.

  14. I have a PvM Tamer/warrior that has:

    110 Taming
    110 Lore
    100 Vet
    120 Swords
    110 Tactics
    100 Necro
    70 Chiv

With 4/6 casting in Vamp Form and primarily a Radiant Scimitar for Whirlwind.
The character is extremely effective and can both tank or let the pet tank. For example it can solo Dark Fathers and the whole of Doom, or it can tank a Parragon Rotting Corpse while a pack of Frenzy Ostards tear it apart. Also very effective at the main Champion Spawns. Normal monsters are no bother at all with this character.

I've also played a similar template with Archery instead of Swords and 120 Resist instead of Necro (& 20 points out of Tactics), it was a PvP build but equally effective in PvM.

    Warrior mix Tamer....

    100 vet
    80 tame
    120 animal lore
    120 Archery
    100 tactics
    70 chiv
    120 bush

total 710 skill can rez and heal pets decently jewel up to get bigger pets when wanted or needed and with a good bow slayer + honor + eoo + conc weapon your dmg will be hot. just let pet charge in and stand behind it healing while you let the arrows fly. Chiv healing + potions if you have a balanced bow.

for fencer.. Unless you go with a very skill intensive build 800+ i don't see it working out to well trying to tank with pet. Though a necro fencer tamer could probably work well.

    120 fenceing
    80 tame
    120 lore
    100 vet
50 necro 50 ss wraith / curse weapon = mana, life or 100 necro for vamp no ss
    120 bush
    60 chiv
pop on some + skill jewels and arties you could make a rather potent tamer fencer i think
