Was flicking through some threads and saw some people talking about how some pets can be controlled 99% without full animal lore

There is a calculation some more experienced people are using that i saw, but still don't quite grasp.

I was building tamer templates last month and people suggested going 110/115 tame/lore. Now i feel as though i could alter that to allow for more points elsewhere.

Any hints? i'm very interested in figuring this out and any help would be great!

    Thank you

I'd say the formula and calculations are worth reading once to understand how they're worked out and weighted, then use a calculator to do it. I like the one here on Stratics as it lets you see all tameable pets at the same time, with your control chance. Handy if you're trying to see exactly which pets your template can handle, rather than work out each pet individually ;)

The formula is explained a little bit down this page

Ideally, you want to start with taming and lore above the creature's minimum taming skill to avoid the higher difficulty modifiers in the calculation.

Some tamers haven't realised the control calculation changed - you can't use the very low lore to taming ratio that used to work before. Which may account for you hearing strange skill ratios from other tamers.

Only one person is posting that and it is bad information, disregard it.

Use the pet control calculator on stratics. Plug in your Taming and Lore skill, sort by Taming, and click "Control Chance".

Generally two popular ratios for controlling Greater Dragons with 99% success are:

    110 Taming, 110 Lore

    (or)

    115 Taming, 105 Lore

I prefer the 2nd. Both specs cost the same exact amount of skill points (220), BUT I can swap in my Birds of Britannia talisman and reach 120 taming, 110 Lore, and get an extra FREE stable slot out of the deal. Not to mention you have an easier time taming harder things with 120 Taming vs 110. It's just smarter to do it that way, imo. You can use the Enhanced Client to create a 1-keypress macro to swap your items. Or perhaps UOAssist has that functionality in the Classic Client.

If you want anything harder than a Greater Dragon to control (Dread Warhorse, Fire Steed) you'll need to check it out and modify spec accordingly.

I was playing with the calculator and it seems tame 110/ lore 115 works for controlling everything so i think i'll go with that, toss a ring on for the stable slots. Thank you everyone all the links were very helpful

Lore only gives control and stable spots.

But Taming gives control, stable spots and better chance to tame hard stuff.

It's always better to have higher taming, if the control chance and stable slots are the same. I would go with 115 Taming and 110 Lore instead. Plus with Birds of Britannia that puts you at 120.

Just a little correction - lore doesn't just give control and stable slots, it also affects your vet skill, and if you have it too low you'll lose the ability to lore wild pets and monsters. Minor to some I know, but I think they're worth a mention all the same.

You guys always love the details. Okay here are some more

100 Lore you can lore tamable animals to determine if you want to tame it.

110 Lore you can lore un tamable animals like swoop etc to see what its hp, stats, resists are.

I didn't feel it was worth mentioning because with 115 Taming / 110 Lore he wouldn't be losing any of that anyway.
