How many of you know people who are keeping accounts open to hold houses but haven't really logged in to play in over a year?
I know three or four personally, and many more that I "used to know" that don't play but their houses still sit there, some with "for sale" in their house signs.

Just wondering, because I'd probably be doing the same.
Why is it so hard for some of us to just quit? I know one guy who's held his house for about 3 years now but hasn't played at all, has no idea what's going on in game, doesn't know about imbuing and certainly not reforging and now couldn't play if he did log on bc his faction points would be gone (lol). (This isn't a factions thread please don't make it one, just making a point)

I'd like to know how many subscriptions there are vs how many (different) people log on every month. People who pay every 90 days to refresh their houses might be keeping this game alive.

I haven't played an EA shard in 5 months but I still have 4 active main accounts. It might be six months to a year before I can decide what to do.

It ain't easy to quit, I agree.

In addition to my 4 main continuously active accounts, I also have 4 accounts that I pay for every 90 days for the house. They'll be the first to go.

So you have 8 accounts, four of which are kept open all the time.
See I think this is common for a lot of people. I opened an old account recently to place a house on ATL and thought about how stupid that was. Made me start thinking about all the people who haven't logged in in so long but still pay.

I actually have 22 accounts but only 11 or so have been open anytime in the last year.

My four main accounts have been pretty much continuously open for between 8 and 12 years and I have the four accounts holding houses that I've had for about five to seven years each.

I think a lot of people have more than one account.

I also think a lot of people have an extra house on an account paid for every 90 days.

    Just my thoughts.

    ...

I use my secondary account for two things... one it owns the main cabin I use (which is an odd situation with the primary account holding another house but unable to move it by the cabin because it also holds a house on Chessy that a friend is/was using (though as to that I'm not sure because I haven't seen them online in some time)), and one of the characters serve as a BOD gatherer (once per evening for the 3x "queued" deeds). Other than that, I play the main account regularly, although I see that dropping for a while in about a month.

I don;t have any specific plans on abandoning things any time soon though, probably just a break, but keeping up with what's going on... specifically any and all EC developments.

I know a few folks with multiple accounts that havent loged in for quite a while. In fact they seem to have dropped off the radar completely. I have 6 accounts myself. I keep them active mainly for the housing and maybe a little for the vet rewards. Also I have developed chars on different accounts for multi clienting. If not for all that I'd probably drop down to 1 or 2 accounts and occasionally do stuff with a couple rl friends. We all started playing around the same time and it is a nice way to keep in touch. I log in now and then to grind out a banner/nexus from the event arc or attend an event every once in a while.

I think the turning point for me was was the KR flop. After that I kind of thought that was about all EA was going to sink into the game. I have to hand it to the dev team for SA. I thought it was a brilliant final effort before they scattered with the wind. Exit Draconi and from that point forward it really hasnt been all that exciting. Well the bard changes were nice and I like the new ships. Other than that my most memorable experince since SA has been an adventure mucking through account migrations. And those are memories I could do without.

I have 2 accounts I reopen every 85 days or so to keep the houses. I actively play for a month or two a year usually for the last few years. I could just quit, but meh, I like to log on every half year and play though the weeks worth of content that has been added heh.

I'm just kinda not into mmos anymore. They are pretty boring nowadays and require a whole lot of time. Though somehow if siege got a good population going again id probably keep my accounts open year round. Probably shouldn't hold the ole breath there.

I have 12 accounts, though I've managed to curb my addiction. I currently only have 2 accounts open at all times, and 2 I rotate every 90 days to keep houses on for storage and serve as public buildings in our RP Town. I'd gladly pay for another account full time if I could have 2 houses per account. I do know that I will have at least one account open till the day they shut the servers down. No other game offers me the style of game play I enjoy in UO.

I've got 7 accounts open at the moment to hold houses on Siege, LA, Origin, and Atlantic. For the last 2-3 years, I've found myself mostly opting out of the live event stuff because I either have little interest in it or it's too hard to do solo. In lieu of most of the event activity, I've been keeping busy slowly working up skills on characters all over the game.

I like to find stuff to do that raises skills and lets me slowly increase my character's stock of resources for crafting and also slowly increases their bank balances to reach the point where I can splurge on power scrolls or other necessities (full spellbooks, empty rune books, scrolls of binding to get an imbuing 120 power scroll, useful jewelry, recipes, talismans, etc.) for one character and then start building it back up again, a little at a time. I turned in just tons of holiday/anniversary stuff last year to get a couple of sorcerer suits and scout suits on most shards, so that took off a little bit of the pressure to find suits with good resists.

The spreadsheet that I use to keep track of all the characters I'm working on shows that right now the characters getting the most attention include 24 tamer characters; 24 miner/LJ/fisher characters; 25 characters with tailoring, smithing and/or imbuing; 20+ carpenter/tinker/fletcher characters (all of whom I mostly ignore because they aren't all that useful to me without a house); 11 scribe/cook/alchemist/mage characters; and 4 characters that are closing in on GM lockpicking; a few faction thieves that need a bit of tweaking/polishing; and a whole bunch of dexxers/archers that never get any attention and are buried under so much dust I hate to look at them.

I'm not sure I'll ever run out of characters to train or shards where I could use a little more gold to buy basic stuff. Some days it does feel like a grind alternating among all of them. However, what always makes it worth doing, in my opinion, is eventually getting those characters to the point where they can do some more difficult hunting or craft new armor or jewelry for my characters or someone else's. Or when I can help out a guildmate or a friend just starting on the shard by giving them a little gold, or marking a bunch of useful runes for them, or pointing them to shops that sell some of the basic stuff they need. Playing on the shards where my characters are mostly "finished" has just gotten too routine and also too painful because of all the people that are gone to even enjoy it much at this point. So, I am currently just plodding along, trying to keep a few accounts open, hoping all the training and stashing away bits of gold at a time ends up being worth it somewhere down the road. It's fun, but I wouldn't call it amazingly entertaining. It comes close to feeling like a job and I guess the next time it gets too close to that, I'll quit for a while and then come back again.

I know of 9, My Siege account I'm counting as 1 of them since I did start the 90 day ride on that account just to keep my house there. ( I play there more than that but with my main account)

I'm down to one account. This account has been continuous since the beginning.

I am only logging in for short periods maybe once or twice a week to stock vendors. My house has always kept me in-game and the sheer amount of stuff I have that it would be hard to decide what items to save, how much gold to save, etc in case I decide to come back. I really am getting to the point of having a hard time getting interested in anything. I haven't done anything with the new events as I find zero pleasure in grinding with decay. I don't attend most EM events with most events occurring during the time I'm still active with family. I used to rp, but I haven't found a rp community that works for me. All I do is maintain my vendors and rares festivals and even that is fading. Making gold is nice, but finding little of interest to do with it.

I hate to say it, but I may be joining the folks quitting this year if I can't get that interest rekindled. :sad3:

    Me, myself and I.
The old credidt card is still valid and I cannot get myself to change anything - quit (with or without packing up before), or play again or whatever. So it lingers.

It was in your power to not turn this into a Factions thread, by not raising the issue at all. You raised the issue then said "whatever you do, please do not take notice of the fact that I raised the issue."

The words "might" and "if," along with other such words, are among the most-powerful in the English language. In the right hands they can call attention to reasonable but un-proveable inferences.

In the wrong hands, however, they hold a great destructive power. Those words, properly placed in just about any sentence, can make that sentence true or at least plausible no matter how un-true or implausible it might or might not be.

I'm back down to two accounts, and am considering closing one and doing the 90-day thing even though I said I would never do that because I used to frown upon it.

More people then you can shake a stick at.... many pay but rarely pop in to play.
I live on many shards like Tina, I too pop in each shard, work my characters, do a little hunting and such then go.
46 accounts is getting too much so I have been on a tear stripping down many converting to a castle or 2 here and there and droping houses I dont need and shutting down accounts.
    It's not easy.
    Why you think?
Well sentiment for one, age of ownership is 2, and well some houses are not that easy to let go of.
I have shut down perma 4 so far, and working on 3 more. Its not just one shard i have to contend with on these accounts. Each has to be gone through from top of shard list to the bottom. Make suare banks and packs and pets are ether transfered to other accounts characters or just left behind.
I have even let 2 keeps fall because it was not worth turning on the account to drop it.
My major problem is I have a large handfull of accounts that are grandfathered. (alot of small houses I wish I could resize but cant, not that there is not the room most are on shards that are super empty but that damn fix one the rest go poof.) Then there is the mains which also some are in the grandfathered list hold the castles. And before you all yell that I own too many of them you best look at my 15 years in uo and understand I have alot of things. Beleave you me I have consolidated alot of things sold off junk and trashed much and still had to go bigger. Yes I have over the years done the 90 day shuffle on many of them, had to. Money gets tight now and then, we all cant forsee the unexpected bill you didnt plan for comming. My accounts are all interlaced with one another like a fine web of strings tug on one and you pull the rest too.
I dont doubt many keep their accounts open in the hopes they can return, hope is a human thing we all have some of. UO is part of our fabric if you have played more then a few years. I called it an addiction the first year it opened. I hate to use the word love to discribe uo as it is a game not a person but I do love uo. I might not play like I use to. (12 to 18 hours a day at times) 15 years does take a toll on a life. Friends who had babys when the game opened now have teens. (shudders) Been there done that - dont want to do it again thank you! :twak:

I sat back and did the math on my accounts and this is what i came up with:
If and I do mean IF the dev gave in and gave us a second house I'd only be able to shut down 10 more accounts, well if you pay every 90 on them this equates to keeping them all open. EA/UO would still get hte same amount of $ from me as it is now. I'd be able to cut back only in accounts not cost. Oh goodness! I cant win for loosing hehe

For the ones of you who are looking for a reason to play let me give you mine.
the sheer joy of being able to do it my way....

Wow dont have it, EQ ...pleese, they couldnt give it if they depended on it, DoaC.... get real, Warhammer ....cough was not worth the pixels..... But UO now your talking freedom.

I can hunt anything.....even players hehe
I can fish to my hearts content and walk away with a tidy sum in fish junk (toys)
I can chop the forest down and sztill cant find that damn Frost tree but I do make a good deal off the wood i do get... go figure!
I can mine at 2 am on most shard if I cant sleep... (try vaccuming at 2 am and see how fast the kids yell !)
I can take my thief and go dungeon rummbling ... I dont mind walking out of abyss with a few rares that some nut tossed in the trash..... it has happened.
I can explore every nook and cranny of uo from top to bottom, even learn a few new words in a foriegn language from new friends ...
I can hunt the seeds and plant them .... something I love to do ... the endless growth is wonderfull and a pain in the neck but usefull
Basic fun and games I do miss my friends who use to play with and in uo but there are always new people and well one can be self reliant as well. We are a social creature, and as such the lack of players in uo is daunting and gloomy but when I get down I just have to see a (young) tag and remember all the great stuff there is to do they will find in their days in uo.... What makes the game boring is only your lack of imagination at that time. It go's away. Just look at what you did when you first started... what you think is boring now is just that spark of intrest you had when you first started uo. The awe and wonder of what you can create... all by yourself!

I hate not having my accounts open and able to play soooo I keep them open as much as i can. if I am on Storm or Tenya or Longfellow or Fayn, Welch,or Meguel or any of the thousand of characters I am. I have fun and keep my world happy. Some of you have let times sour you, just go back to your roots and see what made you a uo addict.
Become that person again. let uo be that release for your daily pressure and relax a few, take your shoes off an dig them in the sand of uo's beaches with a drink in one hand and hte mouse in the other. :pint:

    Ah the good ole days...

When I first shopped at PTC it was north of Vesper, then she up and moved it to Zento, then ran off to Atlantic, and from the sound of it soon to be no more UO. Sadly this story is repeated a lot these days.

I wonder how many people just xfer their houses to closed accounts during return to brit and quit for good, safe in the knowledge that their houses will stand forever since they don't seem interested in fixing anything...

    That's me.

The Grimm Omen said he's added
He does say it's not on the plate for adding t the game, but I'd like to think they are doing a major upgrade to the EC.

I'm going to keep at least one account open through September, and then I'll see where things stand. It's almost May and about time for them to start announcing major plans for the anniversary and just future plans in general.

I have prepared myself by banking a lot of stuff, or storing stuff on characters.

It seems housing makes it harder for people to close accounts. A good marketing ploy other games could learn from.

I'll say this... I for one am not at all curious about what keeps me here... I'm more curious as to why when people think of quitting or talk about quitting they feel the need to come here and post about it... What are you trying to do get me to stop you? Well then I'll do my best...

I started on GL... I tried once to move to Legends... but it never felt like "home". I returned to GL's. Yes from time to time I do take a bit of a break... a day or two here or there. Sometimes almost a full week. But I can never get UO out of my system. I quit once for a month or two but that was because of pain of loss not from loathing of the game.

I have actually gained an account of late. I know many are leaving many close accounts. But once again I remind that the game is what you make it. If you make it boring perhaps you are looking at things in the wrong light. Most are flying solo anymore ..... but UO is not meant to be solo. So I challenge all of you.... build a community again. So many miss it why are so many soloing UO? Find a group get involved... be the leader that others need. Think of the field of dreams.... "If you build it....".

I have and always will work towards a goal of community... true community. Helping those in need. Assisting those who call for help... Aiding other players... Building RP and the RP community..... even if it is one new person at a time... Yes I do suffer many a disappointment... but those disappointments are so easily erased by the rewards of seeing a community grow... or reaching out and helping a new player to see the possibilities of UO.

I challenge you. Work to make the game better. Help the DEV's. Each of you knows at LEAST one bug that you find extremely irritating... make it your crusade... Help the DEV's to destroy it.

All of you remember things that made the game more fun, more challenging, more exciting... write a story about it... bring others to Stratics.... Teach them about community. Share your knowledge.

Right now there is NOTHING out there that even comes close to what UO still has. Even after 15 years no other MMO can hold a candle to what UO has. Certainly some have this or that which might be better than what UO has... but overall they all fall short of the mark. There is something that keeps us here... something that brings others back again and again.... it's US.... the community and the nature of a world you truly can immerse yourself in. Shape it, I challenge you.

Sorry. I didn't mean to imply that I am quitting.
I was just pondering about housing and how many accounts would be lost if people didn't have their houses to keep up. I was thinking of one particular person that I know, then I thought of others. Then I thought even if I "quit" UO I'd probably still pay for my accounts regularly anyway just to keep my houses too.... then I thought how odd that was.

As for helping the devs, if they had better communication skills I most certainly would be. I've helped many a dev in my UO career for absolutely no recognition or anything, just to help out, so let's not go there. Perhaps there are others with an open line of communication to them, but I personally don't have one anymore. Most of my communication attempts go unanswered.

Regardless, I apologize. I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers.

Unfortunately this is the fate of UO, EA will keep it alive, players will keep paying in order to keep what they have but noone will really play...
for what can I see around this will not requires too much time to became true....

I have three accounts, two are constantly open, the third is on the 90 day householding plan. I do play a fair amount, but it might be a week or more between log-ins when RL gets too crazy. I've actually been a little more inspired as of late in the story arc (not the grinding for banners, which is bs), but I've started playing the EM storyline on GL, and been having a ton of fun doing it. I agree with Malagaste's comments, group play makes the game far more interesting!

There was an informal study of sorts done by a previous UO team that showed that castle owners were four times less likely to leave than non-castle owners.

Housing does keep people around. It makes it easy to accumulate a lot of items rapidly, and then the person is faced with going through literally thousands of items, or just paying to keep the house open. If I hadn't accumulated so much from a few recent IDOCs (I was one of like three people at one, one of two people at the other so I cleaned up), I wouldn't even bother doing the 90-day thing on a second account, I would just close it.

As for why other games don't do it, well that breaks down into a couple of reasons. Some MMORPGs want to discourage item accumulation for technical or gameplay reasons. Some MMORPGs don't want to deal with the hassles involved in coding in housing, even if it's instanced like Lord of the Rings (which really botched their housing, and I'll never understand why since it would be a cash cow under their payment system).

A lot of MMORPGs don't want it because they don't want a lot of hermits or they want to make player activity a lot more visible - they want people gathering at certain areas for auctions, messaging, grouping, crafting, etc. Even on the lesser populated World of Warcraft servers, the fact that people have to gather at certain areas to send in-game mail, auction off or buy stuff, repair stuff, makes those servers seem busy.

Without housing, I'm sure UO would have died long ago, because without housing in the equation, people would be more likely to close their accounts more frequently. Probably half the people I know, at least, that play UO keep accounts open or rotating for housing reasons.

One thing I don't understand is why when some people quit, they stick around forums. When I've taken breaks, it's for reasons that cause me not to want to read about UO every day or every few days, because it's just a reminder of why I left in the first place.

I can kind of understand that it's a relationship and people are hesitant to break it off, but still.

I agree I have no idea why people say they "quit" but you can still find them here lurking on the forums... not sure what for... Former friends perhaps? Looking for any excuse at all to come back because they can't seem to get UO fever out of their lives. I realize many miss what they call the "good ole times" .... I never played really before Trammel. I can be honest in saying I likely would have quit inside a week from shear frustration over never being able to do anything without some (&(*&()& taking it away just because... or some other ####(%^@ messing up my skills by building campfires just because they can. Trammel in my opinion opened up the game to thousands who never would have even gone beyond a 14 day trial without it.

What has hurt things is mismanagement on the part of EA constantly shifting around the DEV's, perpetually allowing things that should NEVER have been allowed such as, dare I say it, free shards, and having an utter lack of decent customer support for years. Lets face it EA Games despite anything the DEV's can try is responsible and has a reputation for mistreatment of their customers. We now have a DEV team that while some of you may not think they are listening DO listen. This I am 100% certain of. They may not always have the answer to some of the issues but they are aware of them... and sometimes they seriously lack the manpower to even do what we'd like them to. Again I blame EA. UO should be the shinning jewel in the crown of EA but instead it's treated like dust and swept under the carpet, taken and beaten down time and time again. That is what I find most frustrating.

I don't want the DEV's to tell me EVERYTHING they are planning... I do like some surprises. However on some matters which are well... life changing... such as the randomization of ores and such... It would be nice to have some input. As it is now most of my age old supplies of stone and such are becoming severely depleted and I can't see them ever getting back up where they once were. The addition of the orecarts, treestumps, and sheep have improved my supplies of some things but since the ore comes raw and even at 105 mining I still destroy more Valorite than I get I'm doing better at obtaining some of those rarer types but the stone has no such opportunity.

Sure there are tons of things I would like to see improved and implemented but in my 10+ years I have seen MANY improvements to life in UO. While I may complain about a few for the most part I'm pleased with many. The return of EM's and the much faster response time of GM's is certainly one of the best improvements of late. Adding Imbuing and even the Reforging has certainly brought much more use to my crafters than they have had in AGES.

There are a few things I would VERY much like to see in the future and that would be:

The ability to add more co-owners to a house. 10 is extremely low given the number of players in-game with multiple, multiple homes. I myself have 9 now.

I'd like to see one more skill added to crafting... Alteration. Imbuing and Reforging are becoming close to what I'd like to see but adding the ability to alter one item to another same slot same property item would be perfection. The ability to turn the hideous mempo of fortune into a nice gorget would make me totally thrilled. The ability to change the robe into a nice dress, or elven cloaks into regular robes, or that god awful tangle into a nice woodland belt.... THAT would make me happy. Alter the appearance but not the properties. I certainly shouldn't be able to take a close helm and make it a floppy hat.... but I think I should be able to make it into a norse helm if I so desired...

And last but not least finding a way to REALLY Ban the scripter bots... that would seriously make things better.
