Just a simple question. Poll forthcoming.
Nope. I've kinda been looking for a reason to log on again (been 4-5 months) and this was just another in a litany of poorly imagined "here's a uber monster, go get one hit killed" quests.
Kudos on trying to add some story into SOMETHING for once, but they just need to learn how to develop multi player level quests. Not every single quest ever needs to be kill the overpowered thing. That's why treasures of tokuno for example, was great. Anyone and everyone could play.
I have bout 50 drops so far and have completed the quest twice so far. I just use a mystic thrower and solo it. The breath attack can only hit like 9-10 tiles and my thrower with 150 str hits at 11 tiles.
I have tried about 5 times but after working really hard taking me about 30 to 40 min to solo one and getting NOTHING but 900 gold for my efforts I am pretty fed up...
I've killed over 60 of the things and have very few scrolls
I have one set and several spare for helping friends on vacation. I go afternoons and evenings, and on Europa there is always small group with bards, tamers, mystics and archers. We meet people we have not sen in ages , chat, trade documents ress eachother and have a fairly good time. As we are 3 to 10 peope(and not the same ones all the time) the demons die fast, most often 2 by 2 , we get lots of documents and trading works fine!
Meh. The amount of crap you need to do this is absurd to me. It's a stat-intensive event that people with gear can do. I mainly craft/play a thief/fish, my fighter isn't even GM Swords, so it's a pass for me. Combat in this game got dull for me when EA decided everything needed to boil down to number crunching and modifiers.
I gave this a shot on Baja a few days ago, hoping to run into some other people. Couldn't find anyone and gave up pretty quickly because it was clear my pet and my tamer weren't going to be able to handle it alone. As my tamer on Siege is not part of a large guild or alliance that can join forces to help fend off thieves and PKs while trying to bring down the demons, I've given up on the idea of even attempting to do this event there. I hope it isn't leading up to acquiring some useful or semi-useful recipe like blackrock stew and we once again have the situation where only one or two people on the shard were able to acquire it.
I haven't heard any hubbub in general chat on Siege since early in the week (last Sunday perhaps?) to indicate anyone is really giving this a try. I could wander over and take a look sometime when the shard is quiet but it's really rather pointless to even bother because I already know I can't solo these things with my greater dragon. My tamer's got barely any meditation skill and little mana regen and no evaluate intelligence, so healing from a safe distance quickly runs through all her mana and spell casting is pointless. And I'm not about to ask in general chat if anyone's planning to go do the quest because that's just an open invitation for unwelcome company. LOL
Oh well. Guess I'm sitting this one out whether or not I really want to.
I'm working on it with my friends, slowly.
I just have to feeling you need to complete this part to be able to do the next parts.
I'd sure like to.
that would be pretty lame.....like cutting 80% of uo population out??
I have a feeling he's wrong, for just that reason.
Maybe it'll give you some advantage; maybe it's entirely separate.
But I cannot think of a scenario in UO history where you had to complete one part to be able to participate in the next one at all.
Can anyone think of such a thing?
I did a total of 158 kills received a total of 15 documents only 9 of which were unique. I traded for the last one.
Over all I would say the minions were fairly monotonous though I did have alot of fun working with random players. There were quite a few players who healed others sometimes before I even realized I was damaged!
I merchanted my way to full set and collected about 6 fighting them. I have a full set. 10 doubles in hand. And sold a bunch for profit.
A combination approach is the best way for new stuff. Time spent. A fraction of soloing them.
Although I'm slowly gathering the documents, I'd like some other reward than a book about the Queen. So, I'm kinda hoping this level of the quest enables the next. It would be nice if the loot were boosted a bit just to help compensate for the occasional losses to insurance, it's pretty slim now.
As the staff seems to forget the masses of independent players without super fighters… it was clear from the start this was a waist of time for most of us.
More super monsters… along with stealthing ambush monsters that make that land a living hell. Great idea.
Should get a rubber stamp:
“Poorly thought out by staff… players disappointed.”
Not to mention this mess comes while we wait for their delayed Spring Cleaning 2011... and now it's summer. Famed 80's quote: "Where's the beef!!?" comes to mind.
You hit the nail on the head exactly. Not every player wants the super beasts to come on and kill them in 1 hit wonders. I dont mind killing to get through a quest chain, but at least make it so I dont need a healer every 2 seconds! Bigger and badder is not always good. Long quest chains are fine without the multi death shrouds, I liked the tokuno bit, its why it went over so well. No i didnt go to this quest at all. I dont want to die so many times I get mad and walk away for a few days.... which would happen. This from a die hard UO player should give you a clue whats wrong with the quest chain.
When I started this game the Bane invasion was in full swing. I was working on two characters at the time, a scribe mage and a bard. Both were utterly useless in the event. Believe me I tried to participate on multiple occasions, but those monsters were for veteran players and other skill sets.
Now I have several characters and I have zero desire to run off and die eleventy million times for a reward that might come. A reward, I might add, that I do not understand fully or why I should want so badly.
There was no option in the poll for for me.
I keep plugging away gathering scrolls but.... I've yet to "finish" the quest on any level beyond killing the 10 required.... 10 or 20 times over... I'm sooo disgusted with the event is just drives home the irritation I keep getting.
And NO one wants to Do this "together" ....... first off the drop rate is SOOO small it would take 10 to 20 demons to get a group of just 4 people ONE of the scrolls... and because there is soooo much silly spawn and the things rubber band around and in LARGE pods of 5 or more of the things it's insta death over and over and over again.... to the point where most every one I know says To Heck with this crap.... and quit....
Leaving only me. Working alone.... Soloing these things stinks... and I hate every min of it but I really want the books and a spare copy of the scrolls but I'm hating this event more and more...
And my frustration and anger at the idiocy of the entire event is directed 100% at the Dev's.... who thought up this lousy BS.
Even the last stupid event gave us a drop EVERY time... this just plain stinks...
I don't do GANK SQUADS, and that was exactly what I found, testing done - left TC1, not returning. I am sooo done w/ 35,000 hp mobs, a Dev can PM me if they need to know where to stick 'em.
To the OP, I'm glad you started this, I was wondering how it was going for everyone else.
Like the Dev said, "don't like it, don't play it" this will help show what a FAIL it is, thanks
^ What the Lady said..... And, actually, if it weren't for those asinine trapdoor spiders that constantly and without warning spring up from the sand and hit HARD - I'd probably have tried it more...
No, I haven't done the quest. I don't have a character strong enough, nor the level of player skill, required to complete it.
I play the content I can and leave the more difficult content for more accomplished players.
YOU don't have "a character strong enough"? Petra, I know you're kidding. Tell me you're kidding....
Yeah, I really really really don't understand why THEY cant understand that events like this are NOT fun for most people. They are just exercises in willpower to acquire the limited time item to complete the limited time quest against the pressure and the tedium.
I mean seriously how long has it been that these are the ONLY kind of quest monsters we get? Turkeys, Hell hounds, the newest abyss quest, on and on and on. Its all 100% for fully loaded characters and or groups of fully loaded characters.
I think those monsters SHOULD be there, and that a challenge like that is good, and should have the best rewards, but why is it always that there is nothing else?
Because seriously, there are better ways to do these things, and as the poll shows lots of people aren't even bothering, or are giving up because its not fun/too hard. Well over half the people polled.
to be honest I was busy with something else and I totally forget about the quest
This is the first I have heard of the event.
While this quest is a PITA to do and reward seems low, I think theres a couple things you guys are forgetting.
It encourages multiple party play.... how is that a bad thing? So much in this game is solo-able now its not funny. All the bosses, save for MAYBE Slasher can be soloed. The introduction of a mob that isn't sampire/whammie-able is nice. Before Corgul was the only one.
The north area seems to be completely free of ambushers (at least on LS), and you can go onto the spiral island (where the stone versions of the big baddie and princess are) where theres no trapdoor spiders either.
A friend of mine and I take two tamers each. On those tamers we have 3 that can greater heal spam, one archer with a demon bow, a discorder and a spellweaver for WoD. Kills em in about 5 mins.
The only thing I don't like really is the fact its not 100% drop rate. Also some appear to be alot rarer then others but it could just be a case of RNG.
But yeah, find a group if you can and join in. I feel for those who cant find a group that wants to, but at the same time I am still happy this isnt solo-able.
... mmmmhhh... to be honest, it is / was possible to solo that 'event' with my full bard (with eval intel + demon slayer book and flute)!
On the other hand, there were a bunch of people on Europa most often I came to this island, so that that bard often wasn't even needed to support with either disco or provo and other bards even 'fought each other' by 'stealing' provoking 'rights'.
Got nine unique documents on my own and a lucky trade (with a great ol' pal) got me the last one.
I even 'soloed' with bard supporting a necro / scribe / spellweaving mage (with demon slayer book) and also with bard supporting a tamer with several pets (combos - tried fire steed / rune beetle and also unicorn / rune beetle - even besides the inevitable greater dragon). Bard provokes two minions and tamer sticks pet(s) to one of the provoked beasts. Tamer should change / stick pets to target to the other minion from time to time to get some 'balance'
Its not that hard with a few friends. One good bard Disco/Peace. 2 friends with range attack like collosus or EVs or archery or trowing.
Keep the demon swarmed with Evs and peace it now and then and all be fine.
One of my friends is afraid to get killed with her characters and she got no problem helping me with it.
At the end i finish him of with bard Mastery.
About 7 books/scrolls on 10 demons.
Takes about 10-15 minutes to kill them.
I even made me a new macro to keep casting at them without problems.
If it still to hard you can always wait till the postman delivers the books and scrolls in your mailbox.
It might as well be FORCED party play - Always a bad thing. There's already been unresolved complaints in the past about some "party" members not getting squat, think healers and bards.
So who was this quest designed for? not the 'majority' of players, that's for sure
You need better friends >.>
Well the ONE I have on ICQ that still plays UO hasn't logged on in over a year.
Friends... all mine I can trust explicitly. - I need better ones, perhaps l33t ones?
Forced party play is rather a good thing. I wish UO actually had some of it. It could be done but would require too much effort apparently.
Problem is, and always has been, loot right and distribution. It seems like the devs create a new loot system or two each year then promptly forget about it when the next producer or wind blows air.
There was the books of truth with the unique noise they made when a book dropped. That was cool IMO, where is that now. Why not use it again? As I recall it was a popular thing.
Then we have drop the top attacker or top 3 attackers. Not a good design unless it's for a mini boss where it respawns often or there are many of. For an end boss this is horrible. The same characters that designed for maximum damage are the same 1 or 3 that get the arti.
Then we have the ToT spawning system. Great system everyone loves, they even put a hybrid of it in place for DOOM because that system was so bad it didn't merit mentioning. It is a shame this system is not used more often. It's their best system yet.
The drop in the pack system is also a decent system. Only when multiple drops are possible however. This one is not perfect either. Luck usually plays a role(when we are told it does) and it favors tamers or those that provide damage from a distance.
Then back to the general loot method: Drop to the body. Whatever sadist picked this method to deliver important event or story drops needs a lobotomy. In the case of the 10 pages; Would it not have been prudent to create 3 different demons and assign them pages 1-4, 4-7, and 7-10? It's not rocket science but we have been at this game for over a decade now and we know how the RNG is going to react to this type of scenario.
Part of the problem with UO, in my opinion, is solo play or anti-socialism among players.
Since the beginning, types of teams have been imagined, ways to quest and benefit from each other.
The party system should of been the beginning of this understanding and had been built up to a much more superior system over time.
Instead, in my opinion, the main system did the opposite. Meaning, to be in a party, meant less instead of more. Some might argue that it becomes easier in a party and therefore that is your benefit but this causes division, making the game less playable and to competitive, which is why you see over powered monsters or one hit wonders.
Alot of the ability of the system is lacking the correct incentives to make the joining of others in a party a more exciting and benefitting opportunity, rather it runs the other side of the gambit, challenging a more solo group.
Some of the basic things that a party system should do is, combine certain attributes, such as luck. If one member has 10 luck and another has 20 and someone has 1,000, then they should total up together. There should also be specials for spells and other things that only work or are available in parties.
Gold is also another issue. Why does it make sense for me to go to Brit and ask people to party with me, to go kill an Ettin, when it would be much more fun, for me, to go kill it myself and not only 1 mind you but possibly 100's.
So, spawn on the other hand, should have a type of scaling or balancing system, where a spawn can evolve or change. For example: 1 person fights the Ettin and it stays normal, another strikes it and it invokes some type of rage where its' hit points may expand and it might begin to heal more quickly.
This would also cause its' loot to increase. So, when the gold is divided, rather than it being less, it's at least an even amount and at least the challenge as if it were 2. So, if you added more people to the party, it could steadily increase.
Rather than one hit wonders or their hits becomming more deadly, they would become more interesting. Such as being able to knock a player unconscious or taking away their memory, like their mana or throwing a player a screen away, causing critical damage, forcing a player to flee to heal. The point is, rather than a one hit wonder, we expect more of a challenge and something more interesting than just straight forward killing.

I dig it.
Good team building platform for cross-healing & organized efforts involving an array of toon types having decent kill/heal abilities.
Most consistent daily ongoing group activity going on aside from bank sitting that I've noticed in a while.
A super place to welcome the newly enhanced Bardic skill talents. I luv the provokers.
The mystic throwing gargys are having a field day it appears – some very impressive – makes me want to make one.
Donning all 70s is most helpful … my mage geared more to SDI and such with less than all 70’s goes down fast, hence stays out of it (she’s a clumsy mage anyway).
It's interesting to check out some of the imbued gear being sported.
Great place for skill gains & building a battle able character.
My cook, alchemist, fisher, and plant tender contribute to the creation of enchanted what-nots for the battle chars --- so there's use for those chars within the account too. Shoot - one could probably do well with pots alone utilizing the conflag. and self preservation drinks.
That is a staggering number who didn't bother, considering this is stratics and more of the active players are here.
There was a quest?
Yeah, among the general population of random/casual players you can expect the completion rate to be much lower, and this rate is pretty low. More than twice as many people consciously decided to sit the event out as managed to actually complete it, and the people who had tried and given up outnumbered the people who were still plugging away.
Most tellingly, more people looked at it and went "No thanks!" than the people who finished it or even planned on finishing it combined.
I made sure to remain neutral in the OP, but really this is exactly what I expected. I don't know who they think actually enjoys these stupid supermonsters. It's like they really bitterly want to keep the most uber 5% from soloing things, and don't care if everyone else just gets blown out in one or two hits and gives up.
