Do not make dragons go wild

The special ability for ANY creature in the game to make bonded pets go wild or even unbond is ALWAYS a bad idea.

Even though you have clearly mentioned that ability for platinum and chaos dragons in the patch notes, it will still end up screwing up someone's cherished pet, which is just not acceptable.

Instead, I think you should just make the dragons ignore the resistances on tamed dragons when attacking. Then you don't have to worry about greater dragons being too powerful for the event and you don't have to worry about players coming here and saying "WHAT HAPPENED TO MY DRAGON!!!!"

Please, listen to me on this one. I guaruntee you that someone will end up losing a cherished pet and that could easily be enough to make them quit the game.

I am sorry, but I disagree. This is still an RPG ... and what RP sense does it make to have a dragon willing attack kin. This is not a new concept and it HAS been used before. In fact, when the six were here, this was exactly what happened.

I'm not complaining and I've got 3 tamers, I think Greater Dragons and Cu Sidhe need what Jeremy calls a Good Swift Kick in the Nutz. Why should you or any tamer have Fire and Forget pets. Take responsibility for your pets, engage with them get in there get your hands dirty and vet them yourself....don't let the pets do it all.

    Don't use dragons?

Seriously though I believe this is the devs going "We do not want the event to be overrrun with greater dragons".

If tamers have so many pets that they keep complaining about stable slots, maybe they need to pick something OTHER than their dragon for the one aspect of this one event.

Cus, Rune beetles, Kitsunes, a couple others have already been suggested.

I will say that there should be AMPLE warnings given ingame as well (i.e. a gump that shows up when you log in for the duration of the event) so that people who do not check the website or boards like this one will be informed. I would feel badly for those who simply didn't know about the effect, for those that do... change tactics.

I agree I've got a Greater Dragon I don't use... I've got a Cu Sidhe I keep just for pet tournaments, I never hunt anything with them. They are boring pets, they are made for lazy tamers. Most 2 slot / 3 slot combinations can out damage them both you just gotta get in there and keep them healed. Heck my Frenzied pack can out damage a Cu Sidhe in damage per second easily.

I think a few of you aren't getting my point.

I'm fine with greater dragons being completely ineffective on the content.

I'm NEVER fine with pets going wild as part of a game mechanic. In short, a game mechanic that makes pets go wild is always going to damage the game as a whole. It's bound to catch someone with their pants down and they will be very upset. People who seriously play tamers also really like the pets they have...

I would be completely fine with all spawns in the invasion content having an "eat your pet" ability like proxysmus (that only works on dragons) even... I just don't want to see people's pets going wild.

Gonna have to agree with most of the rest. Don't see a real issue here. Just give your dragons a rest for a bit, take your mare and beetle out of semi-retirement and let them do the disgusting amounts of damage they were designed to do.

Even as a tamer I have to say that the advanced warning should be enough...... if anyone is fool enough to ignore the warning and lose their pet then they have only themselves to blame..... I once lost a 7x WW to the Bone Dragon in Doom...... No warning just vanished..... that was very sad.... very tough.... But you move on......

I think the invasion should be awesome..... looking forward to it

This is one of those situations that needs to be announced at the login screen to ensure that no one misses the message. As it is often pointed out, not everyone visits the UO Herald or Stratics forums to find this sort of information out ahead of time.

I should mention here that this is the same system used for encounters with The Six.

This means it is not instant.

Dragons being in the presence of the new, intelligent dragons, gradually decays the loyalty of the tamed dragon.

This is announced to the player at each step with a prominent system message.

Additionally, Crimson dragons do not like what they consider to be "weaklings" and you can imagine that your dragons won't last long against them.

We will take steps to ensure that the playerbase is aware of the Crimson and Platinum dragon's effects on other dragons, but the mechanic is core to what these new dragons really are.

I agree with an aggressive warning ... but I also think it's a good drawback for greater dragons to face a common risk of losing of control.

edit: oops ... steps out of the way of a Greater Draconi

The "but not all players read stratics/patch notes" is one of the more commonly used end-all retorts on these boards. But when someone brings up a legitimate concern using that reasoning, few people think there is a problem.

As Sarphus alluded to, there are plenty of ways for pets to be made ineffective in the presence of certain monsters without making them go wild. The first thing that came to my mind was that a simple "Your dragon refuses to attack one of its kind" or "Your dragon remains at peace out of reverence to its brethren" message (and the corresponding ineffectiveness of "all kill") would give the same desired result.

Besides, when the devs include such catastrophic possibilies in game that they have to warn us about them in advance, that makes the event experience less immersing and realistic.

At least tamers have an option to use other pets and aren't being totally excluded.

    <cry>
Typically bards are faced with invasion/boss spawn that cannot be barded under any circumstances, which remain that way long after the events are over (and any perceived advantage the bard may've had has long since passed).
    </cry>

I might get out my frenzied pack for this one, sounds interesting.

Reptalon it is then. Probably wont make much more difference to the fight than a wild super drag, but hey... always worth the "ooh what's that, a new pet??" "where can I get one?" comments about a pet that is so broken and underutilized that many players still have never even seen one...

Here we go. I was just waiting for the first complaining tamer.
Simple solution: Don't bring your Greater Dragon to the invasion! There are tons of other useful pets.

    I imagine the scene:

lots of tamer with dragons that become wild and double the difficulty of the invasion, and lots of npc thieves that steal everything from your backback and run away XD

I think as long as the warnings are in place, it's a good way to ensure nobody takes a greater drag in there. I remember sitting at Moonglow when Draconi appeared to kick off the invasion - talk about wall of dragons lol. Sadly, everyone takes out the latest must have pet to events, and this sort of thing becomes necessary.

My kitsune will also be having a party as they usually do ;)

  25. I almost lost my Greater on the first of the Six, lucky I was paying attention to the message on the screen and withdrew it and changed pets. Had I lost it I would have been very pissed. Still I wish they fix it so that if we take a wrong pet to a battle such as with the Six, simple have the pet REFUSE to fight, and not go wild.

Maybe notifications are given via system messages. Although a tamer fighting with a greater dragon isn't going to have nearly the same flood of system messages as, say, a samurai with lightning strike, it's still easier to miss a system message than it is to... Fall off a log...

To many, pets are like weapons.
Can you imagine the outcry if you introduced a new creature that disarm-stole a weapon, then ran to a forge and smelted it?
To a different many, pets are more than a piece of equipment.

I'm not against them going wild, though.
I think it's an interesting mechanic.
But, I think it has to be very clear that this is happening. Clearer than a drop in the ocean.

Perhaps, as well as the system message, have a dragon *Toss it's head, angrily* and refuse to attack (or something) so that the feedback is in two places. Especially since tamers are more likely to watch their pets than the system message area.

Good ideas Kimi, especially as some play without sound and won't listen for a refused command noise.

I wonder if we can get messages coming up that "firepuff is losing loyalty" so others see it too... then others can warn the tamer... Though maybe there's not that much point in messages like that. Except if there's no guardzone in those towns, it might indicate when we should all run from said dragon...

i like this... now it means that there wont be large dragons all over the towns and getting in the way. Cant say you were not warned. Although I guarantee someone will be on the boards here after the event goes public crying that their dragon went will.

I like the fact that the dragons in the event will do this. Its a nice tactic for them.

Its like "dude?? seriously!! your attacking me?? your <insert relative here> instead of eating that tasty morsel beside you?? Seriously!!" and OBVIOUSLY the dragons in the game have pea brains... they can find their way to something targeting them 2 screens away with no command... but they cannot find their way back to your side worth a damn.

oh and by the way... before you say Im biased... I have a legendary tamer. I wont be using my tamer for this event.

My conclusion having read all posts in this thread...is that this event does NOT wish for Tamers to participate.

NO game mechanic should ever cause pets to go wild, unbond, and die never to be seen again. Why should this NEVER happen??? Because it is utterly unnecessary to achieve goals of any event. If the new event uber dragons are so powerful, why should our inferior pets (even greater dragons) matter.

I learned long ago the Dev Team will do as they please, regardless of player reaction.

So simply tell me now when this event will begin and end and my characters wont need to log in until after the Dev Team nonsense is ended.

Then my characters, especially my Tamers may once more enjoy the world I pay to support as much if not more than most others.

I await the start and end info. I will be surprised if it is provided.

  30. There another problem I hate with town invasion, those that use mages cannot cast summons in towns, even with guards remove they block all summons, I really wish they allow us to cast summons when we do these battles. As it is right now, I plan on avoiding the towns that are on list and hope they get their heads out of the sand and allow mages to cast EVs, earths, demaons etc..

Because the crimsons are dragons ... big, smart, you-are-crunchy-and-taste-good-with-ketchup dragons ... and the thought of their blood kin (no matter how inferior) coming to heal to mere mortals is a grave offense to their sense of the order of the universe.

To which I reply: As a Legendary Tamer able to bend creatures wills to mine, calming their wilder influences, and taking a week or more to bond with these awesome friends, and then taking weeks more to train these friends, and months or years travelling and combatting evil with these friends...

THERE IS SIMPLY NO VALID REASON FOR THEM TO GO WILD, DIE, NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN.

Just teleport all tamers to Jhelom upon log in and imprison them there for the duration.

Some will enjoy this invasion, others will not. I fail to see why EA doesnt simply create a shard for such invasions and allow those wanting to participate to cross shard to there while leaving our world alone for the many of us uninterested in having Trammel towns temporarily turned into Felucca.

I think it makes perfect sense. Just don't use your dragons when you are going to face the new ones. Simple solution, and making them unbond and go wild makes quite a bit of sense. They are reverting to their wild nature under the influence of their more intelligent kin.

Don't bring a knife to a gunfight, and don't bring a dragon to a dragon fight.

This does not make all pets go wild, only dragonkin. So this is not a non-tamer event at all. Simply use a non-dragon pet or pets, and you won't have a problem.

  38. So what you're saying here is that you only have 1 friend?

How did you manage to get to Legendary Tamer if you only have 1 friend?

Please, get real and turn the soaps off. There's too much drama already.

Use 1 or more of the other 13 or whatever number pets you have in the stables. You'll live without your 900 HP meat shield. Really, you will.

For that matter, you could even use one of the other 5-6 characters on your account. Or did you not realize you could have more than just a single tamer?

You may be legendary, but these dragons are simply better at influencing their own kind than a mere human or elf. Makes complete sense.

As I've just said in my last post, just use other pets.

It's to stop greaters swamping yet another event and prevent tamers being branded with even more complaints than we have already. Again, just take another pet/pets in.

Tram is not being turned into Fel, it's only the guardzone which is removed. Just means guards won't kill the event spawns. If you don't want to participate, just go to a non-faction town like Luna and you won't have to see any of the event.

For one old time tamer, I am glad they are actually warning us this time, unlike the times of the EM events and invasions.

Personally I still think it is wrong to have bonded pets go wild and be lost, because in an invasion there is rarely a chance to do a re-tame, especially when your neck deep in spawn.

I think it would be much better idea to do a random teleport of bonded dragonkin out of the warzones, well a sensible tamer does have their bonded pet tied to a summoning ball, don't you, also do not allow summoning balls to be used in the warzones, doing this allows tamers to keep their pets but also lets the boss dragons randomly nullify our dragonkin pets.

Towns under invasion will be fully castable - everything that makes a city a city disappears during the invasion.

You will be able to cast the full range of spells within the city walls.

Let's not forget that this is a game. Nobody should THAT attached to a bunch of pixels that they would be that upset over losing their dragon.

Now if this event caused my cat to go wild and attack me then run away while I was playing, that would give me reason to be upset.

I don't see a problem with the ability to make pets lose loyalty and go wild. I'm sure it's listed in the patch notes on the login scree. And anyone who doesn't read them, and charges blindly into an event area only has their self to blame.

In moonglow I ran my tamer up and down left and right and in circles killing mobs collecting threads and receiving cloaks. I dont know if there was a "better" way around this but, I for one am happy that my tamer wont be present in the britan invasion.

With the guard zone being lowered and mages being able to participate in the event to "full" capacity, we will see how they actually stack up in PvM. We as mages my get a treat after the event in terms of a buff or new spells that we may NEED to combat high end content.

Is it the best way, i think so since the tamers typically "find a way" around any other system of "stabling" them.

I would rather see the dragonkin just not fight, rather than see someone lose their pet.

Personally, my tamer is my only character since rejoining UO. I am looking forward to trying out and seeing some different pets out there! There are so many different tameables that don't hardly get used.

I definately want to try out a pair of kitsunes, maybe a reptalon, or some frenzieds. I am glad we have a warning, although I think it would be wise to post that tidbit on the login screen or in a pop-up that you recieve upon logging in, just to make sure every player has a chance to see the warning. :)
