Do you think DF will hurt the player base of UO that much?

Discussion in 'UHall' started by Nyte Doombringer, Feb 19, 2009.

  1. I have been reading on their forums and yes there are tons of old UO players posting on there but most dont play UO anymore and havent for years. I guess it may pull the rest of the pvpers out of UO but that is it. I for one cant play a total pvp gank game. I am not a carebear, I like to pvp but when i want too, not random ganking and pking.

I don't believe it will impact it much. Sure, some UO players will leave for it, but at the same time, there are chances that ex uo players, who haven't played in years, will try darkfall and not like it, then become nostalgic for ultima and reactivate their accounts.

I believe there will be an equilibrium.

While I see a lot of people on message boards advertising the game, exactly zero of the people I hunt with every day in UO actually plan on going to DF full time. And those few who are curious currently don't plan on closing down their UO accounts. There have been too many disappointing games in the past for them to not be skeptical of this one.

So no, I don't expect that the bottom line at EA will be hurt even a little bit by Darkfall.

And for those of you who plan on going to DF, you're welcome back any time.

    I wouldn't worry about Darkfall.

UO has a better chance of killing itself than DF ever will.

While the concept of Darkfall seems to be intriguing, it still is a completely different game. I, for one, would not play a 1st person perspective MMORPG. I prefer the 3rd person isometric view of UO. Also, just wait for the release of Darkfall and see how many of the promises really work out, and how the game will work when many people are playing it at the same time.

I don't think UO will lose a noteworthy number of players to Darkfall.

I hope DF does take some hardcore players, maybe then me and a couple of my friends can get some spawns done!!

    huh huh, amirite?

nah, but really DF will be a cool game.

I used to think that but...

    a) Their apparent self-confidence that they do not need to really fully test the game because "they have been doing internal testing" makes me laugh out loud.

    b) They are starting the game release with a digital download and no boxset.. and that too with EU servers only? Oh, and they are charging 53$ for a digital download. Right, ok.

    c) The number of beta testers who are saying that it is an unfinished product.

All in all, I have serious doubts about it. If I try it, it will be only after I have received strong feedback after two months of release. Not going to touch it before then.

Based on the information at present, I would put my money on UO outlasting this one too... if I had to bet :p

  8. Great points there. DF has been in development what 8 years now?
Also how can they say this:
Players in North America are welcome to participate in the European Launch. The plans for US servers aren’t finalized at the time of this announcement. We will offer the option for character migration to US servers for N. American players who wish to use it. We have had people playing without problem from all over the US and Canada. That being said, our servers are located in Germany and distance does affect ping-time.

Since when does the location you are from a gaming server not effect pingtime? Many players from the US playing beta said they had ping of 150-200 which in a pvp based game is not good.

  10. LOL I was looking on youtube today for some vids since the NDA is released and one of the first ones i found was someone stealing mounts. His description was this
Small compilation of mount stealing (from hyperion kingdom), tking the hyperion kingdom, I have stolen a total of 16 mounts so far, I will upload the entire compilation of all mount thefts from hyperion kingdom in a few days
They are the dumbest carebears in darkfall, not only did they let me in their guild within 5 minutes of applying, but they gave me armor, blamed and banned SOMEONE ELSE for the mount theft, but believed me when I said, "I am sorry dude I thought they were enemies" after tking afk macroers and low health hyperion noobs

I guess Tking is pking. I was like ok that is prolly 80% of the player base attitude. Umm no thanks I played wow way to long to deal with that again. LOL

lol, if nothing more DarkFall will be a hilarious drama to watch unfold as the playerbase realises that a free for all full loot PvP system is NOT the holy grail of MMO playstyles.

At the end of the day though I'd consider Darkfall a massive success if it manages to stick to it's principles, and manages them in a way that makes the playerbase happy, even if the number of subscribers drop significantly after launch.

  12. Yea well that is true. If they truly believe in their original concepts of a total PVP MMO no matter how many people play it vs how many people would play it if it wasnt totally pvp.

The attitude is what initially turned me off to the game. I spent some time on their forums and it was just overflowing with engorged epeens. Zero play time and they manage to have an inflated ego about pvp prowess- go figure.

And somehow this all ties into their own self worth? :wall:

I for one checked out the beta last 3 weeks and the pvp is as close to old uo as you will find. Its better, this will be the downfall of uo imho.

Goodluck, oh ya and before anyone says goodluck waiting on the release. IT WILL BE RELEASED ON THE 25TH OF THIS MONTH :)

    woot woot!

Why would it be the downfall of UO? In case you didn't notice most UO players these days are not interested in PvP.

I guess thats my point, They pushed away the pvpers and pretty much made it clear there wasnt a spot for them in this game. Thats why you have carebear land and everyone playing a watered down version of its former glory. This isnt UO anymore its basically another item based game trying to catch up with WoW. Too bad UO will never be what it once was. Its really a shame, it was a great game before trammel, Before insurance, Before siege turned into a dead zone.

What have they done for pvpers in the last 2 years. Stuff that was suggested/proposed/asked for?

  20. LOL people have been predicting the gloom and doom of UO for what now 6years. They said that when wow came out, AOC; WO; umm EQ1 and 2. hmm what else. LOL

  21. Well if DF makes it, its nice that the however many people want to play a game that is total PVP. Nice that there is finally one out there for you. However saying that if you compare the number of people that like total pvp to the number that like consensual pvp to the number that dont like pvp at all I am sure that the percentage of total pvp players would be very low. Hence that is why the makers of WOW have pvp servers and non pvp servers. You can say what you want about wow but Blizzard does know what they are doing or they would not have 11 mil players after what 4 or 5 years.

Ugh.. Darkfall is going to be epic fail... May as well call it "Lineage: America"... Sorry, if you're really into this game, have fun playing with the other 10k members that you retain.. I've watched their forums for YEARS now (Because even 6 days before release THEY DONT HAVE ANY PR OR EVEN A REAL HOMEPAGE). This game has strayed to far from the original concept.. They didn't re-invent the wheel. This isn't Pre UO:R in new form.. The few people (Ahh 100 or 200 maybe) who remember the dread lord days FONDLY may have a bit of a hard on for this game.

What makes you think ANY of the people on the DF forums are into UO anyways? 60% of them outright say they have either NEVER played an MMO, or they come from a completely different game. Usually the other said game is WoW, or EvE, or some free-to-play game like Worms.. There are 4 or 5 people on those forums who speak highly of UO and the rest will flame you to death for mentioning it.

DF is going to be Counter-Strike: Furries and Fantasy Edition! Seriously, WOW the mobs zig-zag and run away? That AI must have been so hard to program these guys rock!

Ooh, just saw this thread. I made a near duplicate... sorry!

I think DF will attract more ex-UO players than current ones. But that's why I also think that Mythic could have been prepared to offer an alternative to the inevitably disappointed DF players. Because it *will* disappoint.

I might try it if it's still around 6 months after release, but after trying TR, AOC and WAR right after release I have learned my lesson x3. Never again will I fall for it.

If the DF Devs are able to eliminate most of the cheating that plagues UO PvP......then it will attract alot of players.

If not, and DF is full of cheaters, it will end up just like UO.......dead.

No I don't think it will hurt UO's playerbase anymore than the normal passage of time has/does. Meaning, I think UO is likely to generally lose players over time, but the day of mass bleeding out players to new games is pretty much over. Everquest and World of Warcraft did that in a big way that isn't going to be repeated, I think.

Reason being, the people still here either don't like newer MMO's, don't have systems that can run them, and/or are hardcores who've stayed in UO (even if all that meant was paying the subscription while not really playing much) throughout the release of new games which they tried and played. People who've stuck around for 5, 6, 8, 9, 11 years through other newer games and bouts of not playing UO much, but kept their accounts active, aren't likely to suddenly break that habit over one new game IMHO. A lot of people may indeed stop playing for awhile but if they're still here they're addicted enough to keep their subscription-- if for no other reason than because they don't want to lose their house(s).

And yes, in ANY mmo, the people hanging around talking about how the next big game is going to kill the playerbase (this happens in WOW and lots of other game forums too) are the already-quit players still hanging around with little better to do than work themselves up over the next upcoming game.

It's going to flop, and a couple months after release we'll never hear of it again.

Does anyone remember when Shadowbane was the long-developed indie hardcore PVP game that was supposed to put a hurting on UO? I spent YEARS hearing how Shadowbane was going to be the death of UO. Then it came out and it was a buggy pile of crap that nobody played, and all the Shadowbane boosters basically had to shut up.

    History repeats.

4gregu hates 3rd person games, 4gregu also hates when people talk in the 3rd person.....

And to stay on topic, if DF really does plan to stick to this "all pvp all the time everywhere" idea, it will fail, and it will fail hard. (and for the smart asses around here, yes, that's my opinion)

Nothing like that will ever last. Even though so many players... even NON-df fanatics, on stratics here... wax and wane about how what "ruined" uo was ending the pvp anywhere anytime ruleset.... no serious playerbase of any appreciable size will ever go for uncontrolled pvp-at-will. A small hardcore minority always wants it, but the overwhelming majority want to be left the hell alone by other players a good 9/10ths of the time.

HERE is a quote from thre beta forums. The pre oreder link has been leeked look at what they have had to say:

The Pre-Order structure is being hammered beyond any possible expectation. There's an impossible number of connections per second even now. We are seeing 20 times the traffic estimated. Our web servers are able to handle quite a bit of load, even so, they are currently taxed to their limits. This wasn't anything we could have reasonably anticipated.

We're looking into the reported UK error and we'll open up again.

We'll extend your lead time but I don't know how helpful that's going to be with the link having leaked. We expected it to be leaked, however, we didn't expect there would be such a response in the first place.

We've already started working on upgrading web server capacity yet again to be able to handle a launch rush should it be anything like this.

We apologize but we're doing everything we can.

Post issues in here, we will try to deal with them as they appear. Please refrain from starting new threads about this and only post relevant issues.

We WILL try to accommodate the beta testers somehow, but that cannot be done tonight.

ps i have the leeked website address but untill i get into pre order im not handing it out :)

    Darkfall will:

    1) Be a fun game
    2) Be the PvP game of choice
    3) Be stable on release, compared to other game launches

    Darkfall will not:

    1) Kill UO, WoW, or even AoC
    2) Flop months after release
    3) Suck

Fanboys of DF and UO throwing opposite-end-spectrum things at eachother is just getting old. The above are my predictions. I will be playing DF.

Well I will be glad if DF is both stable and steals enough of the pvp-purists from every other MMO that they can stop being extremely loud, demanding minorities in every game I play, "INSISTING" and clamoring for constant giveaways to pvp playstyles to the point where you have to PvP to advance. (See: WOW... UO... etc.)

  45. Cal Hurst

    Cal Hurst Guest

The number of people who ask for giveaways are equal percentage-wise across all styles of play. It isn't just PvPers, just RPers, just PvE'ers, just crafters, etc. It's everyone. Equally.

Except that PvP crowds are ALWAYS a minority, yet very frequently have the very best gear or items-- or enough of them --- granted only through PvP avenues, to the point where a PvM character cannot compete or cannot advance past a certain point without PvP'ing.

WOW has tried to "accomodate both crowds", but the end result frankly is that neither are happy... PvP'ers have to raid and PvM'mers have to PvP Battleground to tediously grind up tokens to trade it for PvP reward gear. And given that true PvPers are never a majority of a major MMO's playerbase, I think it's extremely over-favorable to PvP demands when the 10, 15 or MAYBE 20% of dedicated PvP'ers essentially get to hold hostage everyone else's playstyle by constant demands and complaints that PvP 'isn't supported enough' if it's not something everyone basically has to do as a chore to advance.

No. I think UO has a small core which is probably like 75% of the playerbase that wont ever leave, cause they are just creatures of habit. DF will have an impact if it lasts, but it wont kill UO.

    Thats my guess.

No I dont to be honest. In fact I dont think any new game coming out anytime soon is going to hurt UO's numbers.

UO is now a niche game. Its never going to attract new players in any sort of numbers to make a comeback. EA obviously realise this and thats why they are putting minimal effort, just enough to keeping it ticking along whilst its still profitable. You can bet your life that those profits that EA make from UO dont all go back into the game ... most of it will fund other projects.

Instead UO subscriptions will most likely continue to dwindle as players fall away. EA will keep an eye on these numbers and the profit level and they will have a point at which they will say enough, and pull the plug. That point doesnt even have to be one where the game becomes un-profitable. All it needs is for the profit to drop to a level where its simply not worth it and instead they will reallocate the resources to other projects with a bigger profit margin.

It may take a year, or a few years, but this is the ultimate fate of UO. No point in pretending that its going to bounce back, best just to enjoy it for what it is. Darkfall will not kill UO. A steady decline in players will.

EA would probably sell the rights to UO before they shut it down. Even if they sold it for the value of the equipment it cost to run the servers they would still make more money that way.

Do EA have any sort of track record of doing this that you could reference?

It would seem like quite an oddball move to me. I mean EA have plenty of valuable IP they're sitting on and doing nothing with. Just because it's hard to imagine a UO2 these days, doesn't mean EA would never do it - just like it's not impossible that they would some day revive the Wing Commander series, or even the single player Ultima series.
