I don't understand how the devs aren't getting this, but the drive to collect and display rares is a big part of UO for a very large number of players. In releasing the same art over and over, you are punishing players for collecting rares and putting their work and money into an item which they deem special enough to spend money on. Everyone KNOWS the drive to collect items has a very strong motivation or the events with item rewards wouldn't get even hard core pvpers into the fray.

This said, STOP rereleasing rare items over and over and gutting the value of rares and making it almost impossible to collect things due to the fact you never know if that 25 million gold item will be the next event rerelease or vet reward.

If you can't find new art to release that will have a big wow factor, at least recolor/rename the item so the old will keep its value somewhat. This has happened repeatedly, but at this time I am talking about the rubble items. The ruined bookcase, stump, wall hanger, tapestry, and wall pieces are all repeats of items that were available from the Magincia invasion. I know personally a person who paid 30 million for a stump and 15 million for the half of the tapestry he needed. That is 45 million down the drain with this event. I myself bought a stump, the large rock and the moongate rock which are in this event. The moongate rock is at least a different color then the one during the Mag event, but all of the other items are the same. Why can't you make the large rock white like you did for the moongate rock, do the stump a dark brown instead of an oak color, and so on with any others that were available previously... Add more things to collect, not just rerelease what already is out there. This is what is happening with the trick or treat items, so why not do the same for all rare items that get reused from now on???

If this devaluing of rares continues at the rate it has been lately, a good portion of the game for me and many others will end up ruined. I don't want to spend any money at all on items I have longed for for years now in the fear that it will be the next cheap rare rereleased... Running vendors to make gold so that I can buy and collect items I can proudly use as decor in this game is one of the biggest reasons I have continued to play UO for the past 9 years. Take that away, and a large reason many play this game will be gone...

I understand where you are coming from, but not all of us had the time to be able to milk the magincia event for the rubble pieces we wanted (being chained to my cube for 10 hours a day doesn't help) and I don't know what all rubble pieces will be available during the upcoming event but if they are all different colors then what I already have its going to look pretty funky matching up to rubble pieces of different colors. Now if the event allows you to pick the pieces you want and you can do it unlimited times then I wouldnt care. I have been to busy in RL to try out test center at the moment to find out for myself.

  3. I do feel for you.
And I cant disagree with the devaluation.

But because its a game, rares collectioning, merchanting, etc shouldnt be tied to guarantees.

    I have lost big.

    I have gained big.

As far a rubble goes, I also saw people farm it. Guilds lured and killed players that came by to farm the arties such as fire, stumps, etc.

The game has flaws in collecting and in rereleasing rares.

Im not sure what the answer is.

That along with their non-action against duped event rares and easily deletable glacial hued weapons/clothing with no unique name made me quit rares collecting.

Enjoy just seeing recycled graphics because I don't think they're really adding anymore until SA.

ML dyes killed all prior event rares with unique colors but thats simply beating a dead horse complaining about it.

They don't care and as long as the majority populous of casual players is fed new random items they will continue to pump out old graphics with new names and ruining any rarity the old ones had.

I never look at UO as a rares collecting game, I feel in order to move on to the future we'll have to let go of the past. I believe it's you rare collectors that are making this game into something it's not and have been allowed to do it for too long. I can't wait for the day they tell everyone with all those outdated items that they will have to disolve those items in order to have room in the data base for newer fresh items.

  6. I agree on this. I think while re-releasing Rubble is a good idea, they should either name it differently OR release pieces that were not released during the live event. I wasn't even at the live event so I didn’t get any of it except through 2nd hand purchase, but I do think it's a bit unfair.

I like what they did with blackrock. I was at the ORIGINAL event where we got blackrock by destroying the gates. Oh man that was hard and I got 3 pieces and they were really rare. They released more blackrock over time but all were named differently. The newer blackrock is small or large and named as such where my original pieces are the same graphic as small but not named small. I appreciated the fact that they didn’t completely destroy my effort in obtaining those items.

    UPDATE: I just saw this:
    Old Magincia

Three new quests to help heal the land by releasing the spirits trapped in Magincia’s ruins
The quest giver is a mage near the Magincia moongate
Quest rewards are three types of rubble, one for each quest (total of 12 pieces)
Rubble rewards are all unique - they do not overlap craftables or Magincia Invasion rubble. You can see the possible rewards in the quest gump.
    Quests are non-repeatable
Three types of ghosts now reside in Magincia
    Restless Souls
    Invulnerable, unmoving
    Notices player movements
Can be released by using Spirit Speak nearby
    Drops Threads of Life
    Forsaken Souls
Constantly wanders the streets of Magincia
Can be released by casting Exorcism nearby
    Drops Threads of Thought
    Corrupted Souls
    Red, aggressive
Calls other Corrupted Souls nearby for help when attacking
Can only be released by being killed
    Drops Threads of Fate

The rubble shouldn't overlap with any existing pieces - that change was made this week.

Although I can understand your point of view, I have to disagree with you because I also see the other side.

I have a husband, a full time job, 4 children, 2 children-in-law and 7 grandchildren. When I first started playing UO 11+ years ago my very first grandson was born. He grew up sitting on Nana’s knee playing UO with me. We’ve added 6 more grandchildren since then. I don’t have the time to devote to UO like I used to but I love having new things to decorate with. I was unable to participate in the Magencia scenario at all so I completely missed out on getting the rubble, except to pay through the nose for it.

I’ve had many things over the years that were rare that were reintroduced into the game with a different name, different hue, etc. One thing in particular was reintroduced with no new name and no new color, the serpent scale I believe it was called. It was a prized possession of mine. Then one day I logged in to find my precious Serpent’s Scale renamed to a Nox Crystal. Oh well, I don’t mind at all. I think everyone should be able to own and enjoy all things in UO and I applaud the Dev Team for making that more of a reality now.

  9. But still, you are using the ruined painting. One item that only spawns in Doom a very few times a year. Yes, it has a different name. But still, it kills the arties value. I really wouldnt care much if it was the lower level arties, but this is the only level 12 artie, and its basicly being killed.

The rubble I have seen pictures of (which I think is pretty much all of them as of now) are not parts of other rubble. I guess the boulder could be part of another, but it looks complete on its own. Rehueing them shouldn't make them not fit in with the rubble already out there other then the broken wall pieces, but those don't sell as it is and are so common and unused that I couldn't give any away to guildies. Rocks came in many shades and offering the big boulder and moongate rock in different colors then already out there would just add more things for people to shoot for.

I understand that a lot of people couldn't farm Mag (me being one of them since I was helping my husband wire his parent's new house opening weekend of the event), and have NO problem with them reusing the graphic so others can obtain a cool item (look at the stumps as vet rewards, but they did change the name on that so the old rubble stump retained value while allowing everyone the chance to have the art themselves), but why can't they at least change the color or name so the older items retain at least some value and add more items to collect instead of just rehashing old ones. I bought most of my good rubble and spent hundreds of millions on it and even transferred three times to buy good pieces and bring them back to my shard. I work hard on my vendors so that I can make enough to do this and the reward for hard work is a main motivator for me to play this game. Take that away and there is little left.

It is human nature to want to be able to acquire something of which you can be proud of and show off to others. This is fondly called The American Way (reward for hard work) in the US and is evident in society no matter where you live. You can see how many people want or display items that are common in game. Old rare items that use to be valued and displayed are tossed aside when they become common. A perfect example is the glass vials which became common with glass crafting. At first everyone wanted them because formerly they were rares to drool over and show off if you had them. Soon after they were so common that almost no one even has a single one in at this time. If there is no reward to work towards, why even do it at all. Every game out there has something like this to work for. Special armor, rare items, uber weapons, titles you can show off after months of hard work and so on... Take away the quest for some hard to obtain reward you can proudly display to others and it all becomes pointless drudgery.

But you have to understand that that is the whole point of rares collecting. Otherwise you are just accumulating "stuff". UO is notorious for this sort of thing. Look at the trees we've got now to grow... same graphic as some of the rubble trees.
It's pointless to argue about it though.
Who knows maybe two story statues will come as trick or treat loot.

I understand this and if you read what I said again, you will see that I stated that I have NO problem with them reusing the graphic so everyone can have it to decorate with, but I don't see why they can't rename it or rehue it so the old ones keep their value. rehueing would also offer more decor since you could then get the old item if you wanted to pay for it and the new and have two variations to decorate with... This is for all items, not just rubble. I have lost so many items through reuse over 9 years of playing that I lost count years ago, but the reuse of old art in the last year or so has become so rampant that I find it worrying what will happen in the future. If there are zero rare items left to buy, what is there to work for???

The fact that you're measuring the items in monetary terms instead of how you slayed something to accomplish something. It should be the joy of the experience. Otherwise, it is just pure speculation on items in hopes that you can sell it to someone for far more than what you paid. It is quite sad when rare collecting is based on the perceived gold amounts that it will fetch.

I too understand your point. I had a hanging ring mail tunic a long time ago. It was a gift from an even greater thing that I cherish.... one of my best friends in the game. I spent a long time training her crafter with her and she gave me the ringmail some time after we were done. She went on to become a better merchant than I could ever hope to be, then eventually left the game. My tunic was lost when AoS came and made it static under my house sign. I paged a GM a few times and they were not allowed to do anything about it... other than tell me it was an illegal item and ask me how I got it.

I still have the friend. The ringmail isn't important. The lesson I learned from this is that rares are rares for a reason. Some were server births, some event items, some are illegal but not actioned, some are duped. Part of the gamble is coping with the fact that they may not be rare some day... or outright deleted the next. It is a highly volatile market and you should not get into it if you can't suffer the loss. Which is exactly why I stayed out of it.

As for the collectors I hope all of your rares remain rare for the rest of your days. I like to browse the forums and drool over some of the interesting items. I like to read the history of the events that spawned them.

As for the new rubble... well a pile of logs is.. for some strange reason... one of the things I have always wanted since my time with this game began. I am thrilled I'll have it soon. I'm sorry if anyones rare was devalued in the process.

I do not value it on the perceived gold amounts I could sell it for, I work hard on my vendors so I can buy an item I like and then proudly use it in my decor. How are you to later feel when an item you worked hard to raise the 25 million gold to buy is worth 5k... Now instead of being proud of your accomplishment, you feel cheated and it makes you wonder if you should even work to buy any of the other rares you would love to have because who is to say what will be next. I take pride and joy in collecting rares and displaying them and completely enjoy seeing other peoples beautifully displayed rares. I put no value on an item for its resale price other then the fact that if I pay 25 million for an item which later costs 5k, well damn why did I waste all that work and time and here I could have done something else with that 24,995,000...

  18. Basing anything that is collected against a value is simply the nature of collecting. Collect stamps? Coins? Comics? It is simply the common factor used to put a level of rarity or desirability on any item. If you get an item with a very high 'cool' factor, and you get it just because you like the item, it will still have a high value, because that is the way the market works. Whatever your reasons for owning or collecting said item are, it will always come attached to a value.

Yet again, no problem here from me... They are named rubble so the old ones will keep value because of the name change. If they weren't named rubble then just rehue them and the old rare logs someone owns keep their value at least somewhat and your happy you got the logs you wanted. I agree, the pile of logs is one of the rares I have wanted since the beginning since it would be perfect next to me fireplace, but I understand someone who paid 100 mill or whatever for them might feel cheated if they hadn't had a new name.

Also the rubble reusing isn't the whole point, if you reread my posts again you will see I just said this is the latest in a string of reuses and is the one that is here now... I am saying ALL old rares should be protected from here on out by just rehueing or renaming them. ALL RARES, rubble just happens to be around when I am bringing this up because of the huge increase in rereleased art in the last year or so. Give everyone the art, but protect the rares. What does it take to rehue or rename an item... 5 minutes of coding tops???

Ah thank you for this update. I am glad the devs are taking collecting into consideration and protecting the work and time players put into being able to buy such items.

As for the ruined painting later mentioned, the graphic will be reused, but the painting will say rubble from what I gather. This is a name change which should keep value for the stealable one. True collectors (which are the only ones who would pay 100 mill for an item anyhow) will still see the artifact one as a different item. While the price may fall a bit, it won't become a 5k item and should still keep a high rarity value. It is when they are not renamed or rehued that they lose all value as the glassware items did. It is not a perfect solution, but a much better one then if the name was not changed at all.

I have read what you said and I understand and I agree somewhat with it. However, as with so many rares collectors (I am not necessarily including you in this group) they believe that only they should have the rares. I don't agree with that.

I have a cauldron (I think that's the right name), you know the OLD rare one. Then they came out with the kettle. Looks EXACTLY the same, same color but a different name. You don't know it's not the new kettle until you click on it.

I have 2 OLD rare open books. Then they came out with the books you get for learning sand, etc. It's the very same color and graphic.

So I am not just one of those people who think everyone should have everything because I don't have it. I've had several things "devalued" in this manner. I still say everyone should be able to own anything in the game. It shouldn't just be for the elite people who have the time to devote to getting it.

That said, I do appreciate that you are agreeable to them using the same graphic, just changing it a bit, color, etc.. Hopefully that can please everyone.

IMO they should rehue the painting different from the doom one simply to easily distinguish between them. Maybe turn it burned grey since it IS rubble afterall. That way, people who do spend 100m on a real one won't simply have something that looks like the cheap version with the only way to tell them apart being mousing over it.

Ah I would love a burnt ruined painting. So very rubble like and great decor! It would look AWESOME in my evil tower *insert evil laugh*

I too have had numerous items that were reused but renamed and ones that weren't over the years and firmly prefer the renamed ones. I lost 4 of the rare necro regs to reuse and no change and also have the open books which were reused, but renamed for the garg skills. I still have the books out and displayed, but the regs went into the pile of normal ones long ago... What a waste. As for rehueing... I have my old furs still in my house and added in Gobur's furs for a nice touch of color and a slightly different look. It just gave me more options to pick from while retaining the value of the two tan furs! Not a huge rare, but a good example of keeping value :)

My feeling is if they want to put a tag or something on the rare item so we know its not an uber rare or the original thats fine by me. but i also want a chance at an item that looks just like the original or uber rare even if its tagged differently or named differently.

Either a new name or color is ok with me, but I prefer color since you can tell it is different right off and it gives you more decor options. I love having different colors to mix in here and there and it can add depth and texture by using the same items in different colors near each other. I did a pond with rubble rocks and I used all the colors they came in and it is much more realistic and interesting looking then if it was just 8 different rocks but all the exact same color.

I don't think anyone should expect things to STAY unique or "rare" in the game forever...

If it's rare now, doesn't mean it won't come back later... either in the same form or slightly different.

I don't see "Rares Collectors" as a separate gaming group... they are the same people playing the same game and collecting gold... they are spending it differently... We all know there is way too much gold in this game anyway.

One day I'd like to see portable forges and anvils come back... just because they were fun at the time and now that Fire Beetles exist they aren't that big a deal...

In the end, it's only a game... I don't see anyone as being "Punished" if the devs decide to blow up Minoc or Vesper next month and there is rubble sitting around, even if it's easier to get than the "other rubble" and looks and is labeled the same.

If it isn't then why is there such a large market for the thousands of dupes people are putting out there that are getting snapped up? If there wasn't a large group of collectors out there, what is the big deal about dupes then? Not many collectors then dupers can only sell a few items and there is no problem to the economy... Except this is NOT what is going on. A large number of the people I hang out with, talk with at the bank, or am friends with from years of playing collect rares at least as a causal part of their game play often enough that the devaluation of them can negatively effect their cash flow and game play. I DIDN"T say everyone does, but I deal with a large cross section of player types in this game and a large amount of them collect rares. Maybe this is different on other shards, I have only x-fered to buy items and bring them back and don't play other shards, but on my shard, it is a very prevalent part of the game for a large number of people.

But Duping is only worthwhile because the items are PERCEIVED to be so rare and valuable... if everyone knew that "nothing rare is sacred" and eventually stuff shows up in other places either easier or harder to get... then the value goes down and so does the DUPING problem. :)

Are you sure you can get that painting? I have done the quest many times and have not got it. I've got another kind of painting but it is not the one from doom.

Even tho if you could get one like the one from doom I think that would be awesome.

I agree with the OP on this 100%. I bought a yucca rubble tree for 40 mil, to only have it released with the spring cleaning event. The concept of having rare items is a great thing for UO, and that in itself is a mini game. That mini game gets destroyed when a rare item is no longer rare. As for players who have real life commitments and want access to items in the game, here’s a reality check. People who have more time to play UO should be rewarded for their playing time. I'm not saying all items should be rare. But the items that are rare should stay that way. I play UO almost every night. So I get to a point where I have over 400 mil and would like to buy something rare that is my reward for the time I’ve spent playing the game. To only watch it now be worth 5 mil at most because anyone could get the tree during spring cleaning. It’s very discouraging for a dedicated player who’s trying to enjoy the uniqueness that UO could provide.

Ok so those of us who have jobs and children should be punished for it since we can't play for hours and hours a day. Yeah that sounds fair.

I pay the same amount every month you do. I have had many many rares that aren't rare anymore but you know what they never said they were going to remain rare forever.

People have got to enjoy them for years now maybe it's time to give other people a chance to enjoy them too. I have a singing ball but if they gave them out tomorrow I wouldn't mind. I have enjoyed being one of the few that has had one for years now.

That's just my opinion sorry if I made you mad. :D

Dupers devalue rares. Once their damage is done, there's no point in keeping an item rare.

Rares that are one pixel different, or one tag different are still rare.

People who want unique graphics just for them ... well ... ok, I do have some sympathy because it is a rather cool concept that most non-stackables should have rare, very rare or unique varations of a different hue or special tag.

because 50k people > 100 people. Pretty simple equasion. I have rares. I don't care when they become assesible to all. Thats the risk of rare's collecting.

Whats the big deal about rubble?
    whats so rare about it?
and who has they say to call it a rare item?

I believe they are on they right track with what they are doing. There shouldn't be these items that aren't obtainable by everyone. It creates an uncontrolable greed and selfishness within the community. Events get ruined, players act like selfish children when them EM's were about spamming GIVE ME GIVE ME.

I really wish they would of choose a better reward then a piece of rubble IMO. Because I think rubble is just what the name says it is rubble nothing more. Last thing I would put in my house is a piece of rubble.

But isn't it just as easy to give people access to the graphic which is what people are saying they want access to for decor while protecting the rares by changing the name or hue?

Think about when they reused the same stuff for x-mas over and over. People were upset the year they didn't even change the names on the globes and by just doing that they ended up with three distinct sets of globes which people collected. It is even better if they are rehued since this gives you a different looking item to use as decor. I am not saying don't give people access to the graphic, I am just saying how hard is it to put in a new line of code renaming it or rehueing it? It is what they have already done time after time for the x-mas and anniversary gifts so why not extent that to rares already in the game?

As for the rubble, this is a moot point anyhow since Jeremy said they changed the rubble so it won't overlap the Mag rubble. I would just like this to apply in the future. If it is so easy to protect them while still giving people nice items, why gut anyone at all along the way??? This isn't an either or thing I am suggesting. Either we give you the same exact rare item again or no access to it at all... this is a give us the same item but just change it a bit through a different name or hue so the old one will remain rare on its own.

But is rares collecting that big of a deal to take that much time to code these things when there are far more important things they could be doing?

They are putting the items in anyhow. It shouldn't take more then a few minutes tops to change the code line for the color or name of the item. They already use it as a short cut to new items all the time which they release for people to collect. Examples are the x-mas globes given out 4 years with 3 name changes, the holiday/anniversary bells, furs and Gobur's fur, anniversary begging items, and the list goes on and on. It is a fast way for them to offer new items to collect, so they can just take a few extra minutes to do the same for all rereleased items and keep anyone from getting hurt while offering all the art to everyone.

Did anyone from EA/Mythic say "This is going to be rare... we aren't going to use it anywhere else"?

I think they should reuse... I hope they reuse that cool new dragon art.

Heres the thing if a gamer who's never played UO see's something about the game that catches his interest try's it out buy's it or whatever only to find out that by the time he learned enuff about the game to achieve the skills he needed to do the quest the whole thing is gone and done with beofre he has his chance. So now he's disappointed he wasted his time and won't be back.

They should stop bringing items to the game they can't be obtained by everyone today tomorrow or in 3 months from now. Being a non repeatable quest is cool but if I tell my buddy about it and he wants to play but won't be able to do the quest till dec or jan will it still be there? I honestly don't know one person that would buy a game because they have a quest for rubble but it's the whole idea of it.

Like myself I'm upset that when I returned to the game after hearing about the dread steeds within a week they were no longer available to tame. I'll get over it though. But there will never be balance this way unless everything is available to everyone atleast once.

Strange... I have heard the dread war horses are still tamable and a guildy was talking about taming them last month...

The other game I play has the same kind of thing, they do holiday events with items that are given out once and which you then can not get later. In fact, on UO you can buy said items if you really want them and work towards to gold to get them, but in Guild Wars, many of the items are linked to your char and if you didn't get them yourself at the time, you will never be able to get them. Even though my favorite hat in the game came out a year before I started playing and I would LOVE to have one, I am o.k. with the fact that it is a cool rare that I can NEVER get because it is linked to the char that received it and can not be equipped by anyone else. Each holiday I get the rares that come out now and enjoy having them to use and wear and they are special because they were offered only for a limited time.

To long? Ohhhh you mean since the very moment the very fist person logged into the game and grabbed a server birth rare?

Rares are a part of the game nothing is ever going to change that. You can say oh what if they take every "rare" out of the game or make them obtainable forever. You will still have some odd item that got overlooked or some glitched piece someone got or made somehow and you will still have someone who wants to pay every piece of gold they have for it.

I agree, we pay to have the same amount of log in time each month. If we both have subscriptions to a gym, I go 4 times a week, and you go once a month, who is going to be more in shape? Regardless of the circomstances keeping you away.

What it comes down to is that rare collecting is a mini game in itself. The developers would not have to do much to keep that mini game going by leaving some of the desired items like rubble rare.

No need to be a jerk.

I work just as hard as you do to get my items I just don't have time to play for hours and hours.

I never said I wanted things now now now and I never said I didn't want to have to work for it. I just don't have as much time on my hands as you do. That doesn't mean you deserve more then me.

exactly, I believe if they knew the effect it would have on people today I think they would of done it differently. The vaule placed on these pretty much useless items that are nothing more then decoration have cause such a greed for these items that players went as far as to exploit to get them. If everyone had atleast one chance to obtain what ever item at some point in the game there would be less desire to exploit dupes.

With those items that were crafted with old tags I felt they should of changed when they made the changes in the first place. Now you have players running around withouted dated gear claiming it to be worth mills just because the tag say dbl except. How appealing is it to newer players to see old useless junk worth more then the new more powerful items? I understand how some of you want to hold on to a piece of the history of UO. But when the old starts to interfere on getting anything new we have to make sacrafices. And the first thing that should go is those damned AOS clothing PLEASE put that bad memory behind us.
