Whenever there is an EM run Event, like for example the most recent about Queen Dawn, because of the nature of the Event that attracts quite a number of players, inevitably LAG increases. For some players just marginally, but for some players LAG may worsen so much to make the whole Event not much playable, realistically.

I wonder whether there might be other ways to run EM Events, spanned over more days with a limited set of players each time and those who participated earlier times not able to participate again so as to give all players a playable chance at it (like being able to maintain a list of the accounts which already participated and block them from participating again to the same one Event untill all players within the allocated Event quota of players allowed to participate without LAG have done it).

Besides this, and in particular in regards to this last Event about Queen Dawn, I am wondering whether in the follow up to this opening Event players will be able to continue to have a chance, hopefully with less LAG and with a 24/7 type of Event like the Towns invasions, rather than a brief, high LAG EM one, at keeping fighting Blackrock Golems to try build up their suit with the new armor that has been see as dropping.

You know, one would have thought, or perhaps better say hoped, that between july 2009 and February 2011, after some 20 months went by, at least some different way to run EM Events so that LAG would not affect players' participation so much could have come up....

Oh well, I guess that the passing of time sometimes does not mean much.

Last night I got a troll slaying pike from a blackrock golem corpse.

It made me think of you.

I would feel differently about you and your ridiculous, bizarre, incoherent, rambling posts if I had any particular evidence or notion that they were in any way the least bit sincere, and not deliberate troll attempts.

But, alas, I have been around too long to think different.

Magincia is full of blackrock golems. Go get them.

FYI. Although this is a discussion forum, there is really no need to go to great lengths to create topics for discussion. It fills up quite nicely with questions people need answers to and information people have discovered and want to pass on.

This reply has a magnificent, and admirable, and all-too-obvious flaw: It assumes the post was sincere.

I can see why I am not a moderator.

My reply likely would have been filled with sarcasm, thinly disguised contempt, and a general disgust for the original post...or actually, the reply by the OP to the person that showed a post from a couple years ago where Poops asked the same basic question.

It astounds me that Poops really doesn't understand the actual UO.

Well...astounds...and sickens...because I am just certain to have to see more titles like this one.

It may actually be time to employ the amazing "Stratics Silencer" for these types of posts.

I keep holding on to some modicum of hope that THIS one will actually be useful, and have merit.

And each time, the Poops Posts fail in all those regards.

    Most unfortunate...IMHO :party::thumbup::stir::thumbup1::sad2::(:grouphug::lol::lol:

Might I ask you, respectfully, to correct your spelling mistake please? The OPs user name has a double 'p', not a double 'o'.

    Thank you :)

    I'll actually answer this question.

At least our EM's have what I classify as two types of events.

The first event has a degree of "role-play" as they are actually present as either themselves or various characters to drive certain story lines. Unfortunately, these are prone to large gatherings and creates a certain amount of lag the OP seems to be whining about. Depending on the theme, I make a decision whether to attend or not.

The second is at the player's own pace to do. Of course, the likelihood of directly interacting with the EM is slim to none. While I don't encounter a massive amount of competition from other players, I don't suffer from any lag as well.

After saying this, I'm sure the OP is going to have some kind of grievance about having to choose this or that. I highly doubt that the OP has given consideration that while the EM's have a great amount of lattitude in their events, they also have a great amount of constraints. I doubt that the EM's will ever have the power to impliment hardware and software fixes to the "lag" problem, and that is justification enough to me why it hasn't been "fixed" in almost 2 years between his original posting in 2009 and now.

I will, again, cordially invite the OP to accept this for what it is, or the OP can move on to a game that can more accurately meet his gaming needs. May I suggest solitaire?

Just thought id throw in, the reason there is so much lag at events (i can say this for Atlantic anyway) is that UO is set up so that each character has their bank box on them at all times, even tho you have to actually go to a bank to actually access it. So, thats the main reason for lag when there are tons of people in one place. If this could be changed, great, if not then it is what it is.

    *sigh*

Your posts generally make me want to beat my head into a wall.

UO is online, ya know.. The internet. The internet has this thing called latency. In an online game, especially in an area with a lot of players, a lot of data is being sent to your PC. All the character positioning, what they are wearing, damage states, the spells they're casting, what they're saying... on and on.

As I mentioned in you last wakkado thread, UO, is an MMO. What do the M's stand for? Say it with me now, Massively Multiplayer! *claps*

This means that it was 'designed' to be played with others. It was designed for more than one person to eek enjoyment out of at a time. Its not there to cater to your pixelcrack whims, nor your need for personal satisfaction when 'killing' digital baddies.

Now, could lag somehow be lessened? Yes! That would be a nice thing for the UO engineers to work on. Can they fix it? No! Not entirely, the magic and wonder of the interwebs is not a place easily tamed...

Now, you want EM events stretched out over days... In fact, some EMs have done week-long events! However, those were ever-changing, not static repeats. How many times can 'someone' die?

EM reruns. I think we'll pass.

Okay... first... stop editing your posts in Word... it hurts to quote you!!! :p

Second... I'm logging in later to recover my bag of trollbait. I told you that you had to use that stuff sparingly and with responsibility. Instead, you're just peppering at trolls that have already been attracted to the wrong side of the bridge. You're just abusing them now.

    Trolls have rights too!

No, nevermind... I take that back. But I still want my bag of trollbait back. ;)

  23. I use to walk around West Bank with 30-75 ppl and lag was never as bad as it is these days. I don't understand why so few ppl cause the game to damn near stop.

Let me see if I get to understand it.....

Do I get it right, that in an age where mankind's ingenuity has led to cloning mammals, almost brought mankind to walk on Mars, among others, there is no possible way whatsoever as conceivable or even thinkable that Event Moderators in this game could held any given Event in a way that it would not cause so much LAG to many customers ??

Just none at all ? How unfortunate.....

If I am understanding that correctly, oh well, I not necessarily agree with it but oh well........

Oh, popps, you are such a precious troll. Somewhere there is a village bereft of your...insights...

Let me break down your examples for ya here.

Cloning: NOT an exact science. Things are 'reborn' at the same genetic age they were when the material used to create the clone was harvested. So, they 'age' quickly. Not exactly working the way we want.

Mars: Uhm.. Do we have an interplanetary craft I am unaware of? Can I get a ride? Mars is easily 20 years outside the range of currently accepted tech. The US government (you know, the ones to put the first craft on an extraterrestrial body?) can't even lay down a plan that will survive a change in presidents. Mars will require an international effort to foot the bill, build the craft, and kick us out of our nest.

The EMs are players just like us. Yes, EA pays them... But they set their hours rather low, and don't really give them the tools do their jobs to the fullest. Things like squelch, telestorm, and a temp (few hours) account ban would go a LONG way to weeding out some of the griefers.

But no, they can't control who goes to their events, if they just did them again a day later the same people would show up to get a(nother) shiny. In fact, the last metafiction event did the shiny the right way, a double clicky. Honestly, that’s the best way to dole out rewards...to make sure that everyone involved gets something. Not just the uber artifact-laden sampire with 2k luck.

Could the system be better? Yes. is it going to change overnight? No, it would require a serious resource commitment from EA & Mythic to achieve. Sadly, I just don't see that happening.

I also don't see 'EM Event Reruns' as being the way to go. They would eventually burn out the EM, potentially allow plot inconsistencies to develop, and it they wouldn't put much of a dent in the lag.

Things players can do to combat lag:

    Reset your modem/router before playing.

Close all unnecessary internet-active applications that you aren't ACTIVELY using. (Web browser, chat programs, anything streaming...)

Turn down the particle limit in the EC and zoom in more.

Go full screen, either client. This helps graphics lag by giving full control to the game, not an OS window.

    Increase your RAM.

Stop playing on a 5+yo PC. Seriously.

Things EA/Mythic can do about the lag:

    Streamline both client's data streams.

Streamline RAM usage (Especially for the EC)

Shoot the Fert server and put in something built this millennium. (Seriously, the UO net engineers should have noticed the massive hop times associated with it by now..)

Make a client that doesn't use late 80's tech. Sprites suck. There was a good reason that the Third Dawn client had very little lag towards the end...

I didnt read all the posts so not sure this has been mentioned.

Maybe a better way for EM events to serve the community and reduce lag is have these events spawn in mutiple areas.

Atl is the most populated shard. With a large popultation for some I can totally understand major lag. So if the EM event is going to end in the city of Brit have it both tram and fel facet same time. Spreads out the population. I know I know what some will say. "I dont want to go to fel to avoid lag" but it's a choice instead of being forced to deal with lag.

    3 options....

    1) Deal with lag.

    2) Have it on both tram and fel facets and deal with fel to avoid option #1 if it's laggy in Tram.

    3) Don't do the EM event and dont lose sleep over it. Its only pixels. Just have fun with the things you enjoy doing in the game. :)

FYI- There is really NO NEED to bash, flame and/or be RUDE. You are a Moderator you need to be setting A GOOD example. Not leading your army of trolls in bashing on Popps! Ultima Online attracts people from ALL WALKS OF LIFE! This includes people that English is their second language like Popps and those that might be mentally or learning challenged. There is no reason to treat anyone the way you and your Troll Army treat Popps. I just wonder how you would treat someone with a mental or learning challenge if they posted? Yet, you constantly wonder WHY you can't get new players....LOOK AT YOURSELVES! I hope for your sake Petra, that your bosses aren't reading this thread!!!

Got a problem with the post Jirel then hit that little report button next to the post. That is, however, the first and only post I've seen from Petra that actually attacks popps. Nor is she leading any kind of army against popps, she usually tells people to knock it off. You'd know that if you've read more of popps endless threads where no answer is ever good enough.

    Ser. I. Ous. Ly?

First and foremost, Petra was far from rude.

Secondly, if you really want to hit the "mentally or learning challenged" or "second language" buttons, none of these things excuse behavior issues. While society makes certain concessions for these categories, it does not absolve these categories from proper behavior.

Unacceptable posting structures continue to be unacceptable posting structures, regardless of whether the person behind them is capable of discerning that.

It's funny that you give a pass to Popps, who trolls more often than would be allowed at a billy goat bridge, but you have ire toward Petra who did nothing more than point out that he doesn't need to make continual posts.

As for the rest of us... *shrugs* Sometimes you get fed up with people who continually fail to learn any lesson at all. If, truly, Popps uses English as a second language (and really, I have my doubts that that's anything more than internet anonymity kicking in there), that doesn't absolve him of the realization that he's continually posting the same thing over and over and over, that he's poignantly, at best, trolling on just about every subject under the sun, and that when presented with information, he continually argues with and berates the people who do (mistakenly) bother to try to provide him with it.

But then, looking at the source of this post I'm responding to, I'm far from surprised. They say they recognize each other.

Okay if English isn't someone first language their sentence structure will be different. Just as if someone who's first language is ASL(American Sign Language) their sentence structure will differentiate from a regular English speaker.

If you'd read popps posts closely you'd see English isn't his first language.

Besides how do you know he doesn't have some mental or learning challenge?

Do you think someone with say, down's syndrome couldn't play UO and post in this forum? I guess you'd blast them too because obviously their language skills would be deficient.

Is suddenly everyone on Stratics omnipotent? So are all of you posting from the Q contiuum?

I have read his posts and for whatever reason ya'll pick on him. From what I have seen he starts out nice and then gets nasty when ya'll attack him. Then you wonder why he attacks you.

Its like poking a Rottweiller behind a chainlink fence with a stick. Then one day the rottweiller gets out and the first thing he does is attack you. Why? Because you freaking tormented him over and over when he couldn't do anything about it. So now when he's broken out he's damned sure gonna get his licks in first!

I hope for all of your sakes Popps doesn't become your angry rottweiller.

Didn't anyone ever teach you that: You get more flies with honey than you do with vinegar?

Here's the thing - Popps manages English a lot better than most English speakers, and is fully aware of what he's doing. There may be a cultural difference at play, but to be perfectly honest, he has been told on numerous occasions why people respond poorly to his posts, and he chooses to not act on the implicit advice.

If we're going to start calling people trolls, let's look at it another way.
A troll is a person that posts to provoke a (usually) negative response.
If a person has a posting style that they know provokes such a response, yet they continue "innocently" posting in that style, are they not trolling?
They're still provoking trouble on the forums, regardless of whether they're using the same playbook as your traditional troll.

Jirel, for someone who claims to read his posts you really don't seem to get it. Half the time popps just appears to want an endless discussion to and beyond the point of tedium. Half the time he just keeps on asking questions then wants to keep tearing apart peoples answers and asking even more questions. He has no problem understanding this game. All he wants are debates and discussions and he seems to purposely post in the guise of a simple question. Sure some of them can be interesting, but sometimes it just gets really annoying since he fronts them as a seemingly innocent question. As a pure example, he asks what color the sky is, you might say blue, then he wants to know why it has to be blue.

The other half of the time his posts are perfectly fine.

No one is attacking his language, his sentence structures, or his capability to produce a completely legible post.

  34. whoa ...
    What is rule number one?

Thou shall not FEED the trolls
[IMG] REPORT them is the rule yes?

I must have missed the clique memo ... but >Supposing and or Assuming< that >anyone< is ESL ...
whoaWOWwuff ! just saying ... Cal must be ESL ... definite communication gap ...

That >I< defend popps ... wow ... you trolls are DENSE !!!

now slap that munchie outta JJ's mouth and fall back, regroup, and figure out what the difference is between trolling, innuendoing, and just what kind of IDEA yall want to be addressing BEFORE you post.

Is there anything that can be done to prevent lag at EM events?
    Yep ... quite a few ...
fewer people until the server can HANDLE a "large group of ten or more" would be one ...

    *AHEM* ... :danceb:

I am not 'bashing' or 'flaming'. I am trying, patiently, to explain the way this forum is intended to function. It is not a debating platform. It is not required to think up a topic and then debate it from all angles just for the sake of creating a discussion.
There are forums for those types of activities, this is not one of them. I believe Popps is misunderstanding this fact and hoped to correct that misunderstanding.

    I need to dissent.

If a poster, any poster, maintains as civil, without insulting anyone, and offers an educated discussion over game issues which is what these Forums are all about, whether the argument is or not liked and may bother others the problem I do not think is because the poster brought the issue up.

Is it a game issue ? Yes. Then if debated in a civil manner and without insulting anyone I think if others do not like the argument then they should just leave the thread be or ignore the poster.

Just as a mere example, to help for clarity in the discussion, let's imagine that seeing the red color bothers me a whole lot, whatever the reasons. Would I want all other people I meet in the street not to dress any red because it is a color that bothers me so much ?
Personally, I would not see it as reasonable.

Saying that game arguments presented in a civil manner, not insulting anyone, might bother other posters and because of that, any poster should refrain from posting over such game issues, I do not find it as right especially, since there is the possibility to use ignore and thus, not have to read posts from someone who has been put on ignore, or participate in their discussions.

Of course, that is merely my opinion of it.

Personally, I doubt that popps is ESL ...
Andy Rooney ... maybe ... but not ESL.
YouTube - Andy Rooney in 60 Seconds!

since you are up popps ... Are you an "English Second Language"?
do you have a current UO subscription?
    Shard doesn't matter
Nor "Rank" ... guild / reputation / longevity
    Nor the first two questions.
Or any other questions of a personal nature.

As a guess, I'd put you at 45, NE USA (closer rather than farther from NY)
don't worry ... saying I'm "wrong" won't "Kill me" nor will "no response"
and ... you (replying or not) get the unique "Reward" of knowing "Fayled guessed wrong"(if No=True)
Specifically because >> alla that is OFF TOPIC
    and better handled via PMs
    :eyes: *AHEM*

    speaking of which:
Yes ... pretty good chance that Lag could be reduced by off-loading some of the data exchange into the "Cloud"(thats 2)
or micro "clustering" (essentially an ad hoc Super computer) several machines that are on the same shard/facet (thats 3)

Carry on :scholar: remember to back-up your hard drive. :danceb:

A troll can be "polite" and "civil" yet still cause a riot. If a poster has spent time on a forum, they get to know what the residents will argue about. It's basic social interaction, learning when you'll get a positive or negative response from the group and deciding if you want to argue or get along with them. We've explained this to you before Popps, you don't have to be rude to troll.

Nobody has said don't post. But pause for a moment before you do. Uhall is a busy forum with a lot of traffic. If everyone decided to start a few topics at a time about things they just thought about, the forum would be full. Threads that are about really big important issues in game would disappear off the front page before anyone saw them.

So when I think about posting on Uhall, the first thing I ask myself is "is this important enough that I'd post it on the busiest UO forum?" If it isn't, I might look for the appropriate topic forum and post there. Some forums will be quiet for a few days and the residents would probably welcome a new thread relevant to their profession or shard.

Imagine Uhall like this massive gathering place for UO players. If you collected a big crowd of people in RL, it's likely that most speakers would use the occasion to speak about world politics, big issues in their communities. Then up comes someone and starts talking about the price of bread at their corner shop. That discussion would have been fine with a family or some friends, but in the big gathering of people it just doesn't fit in so well. Some of your topics are like that. They would probably suit your shard forum better, or one of the profession/subject forums.

I find this continuation of the bastardization and ridiculing of a poster's username ironic and hypocritical, as you chastised someone sometime in the last 2 days for adding a "Y" to your name, making you "gaylen"

You called them "childish" I believe.

Glass houses. Rocks. Stay away from both.

Lol did someone start arguing with Popps over cloning? heheh, his posts kill me. 10,000 posts and every one I've seen has shall we say, stood out in a special way. :] I did stop reading half way through. I am jealous of his ability to get many replies however. I post a serious question and maybe get a couple posts. This dude posts... special stuff.. and gets 50 replies. And he argues with everyone.. haha!

I don't do the events much but if I were to have lag I would turn my graphics options down, set my UO executable to high priority, close other windows on my computer, and maybe check ping tests to make sure I wasn't having Internet issue. Either that or upgrade my piece of shizer computer to something made in the 21st century.

I'm reasonably sure it probably doesn't have anything to do with cloned monkeys in an age of spacefaring.

It does not bother me much as I tend to stick to the issues being discussed more than looking at what comes surrounding the central argument of the issues being debated.....

Out of curiosity, though, I wonder if a Stratics' Moderator could kindly let us know whether or not this could be interpreted by them (the Moderators I mean...) as "personal attacks" which, to my understanding, Stratics does not allow to see in posts on these Forums....

Just to know, as a future reference.....

    There's a shocker...

All the dissenting and faulty comparisons in the world wouldn't change the simple fact that your conduct is intransigently trollish.

Just to get all the trolls back on topic the quote is true. I suspect that all of us played the game 5 years back or longer and I believe that lag has got much worse over the last few years.

There is a major issue which adds again to the reason that only vets play this game, can we please talk about the lag monster?

When the best you can do is fall back on the "mentally challenged" defense you are indeed quite sad and out of your element.

An "army of trolls" & "troll army"? Seriously?

No offense Jiriel but did you used to sit next to poops on the shortbus? If so, my bad as English is my fourteenth language so I cannot be held accountable for anything I may say here. You are the only here who seems to possibly be mentally challenged.

And anyone that has ever been in a guild with me will most certainly testify that I am mentally challenged so I am covered there also.

Peece out (more proof that English is not my ferst language)

Oki I tried doing this the fun way, it didn't work.

Misspelling a posters name in a way that turns it into an attack is a breach of RoC and infractions will be incurred if the practice continues beyond this warning.

For events in which direct interaction with the EMs is required, realistically the answer is no. The EMs are paid by EA - repeating the same event every night would multiply the costs for EA.
However, the EMs can also set up NPCs and spawns for "investigation" events in which the playes are required to search the lands for clues or items. These events can run for days without EM intervention and anyone is free to participate at their own convenience. The Europa EMs regularly organize events like this.

The Blackrock Golem spawns were reactivated regularly on many shards.

Which is all fine and dandy if the person in question is actually capable of writing or typing in a grammatically correct format (or for that matter, speaking in a grammatically correct format). I mean, I don't know what gives you this sudden insight into Popps's ability to handle the English language, but given the innumerable posts on Stratics, and on the internet in general, it's ironic that in an age where few people bother with grammar that you would assert a claim about an outlandish ability to determine someone's primary language based on a post here on a forum.

No, no I wouldn't. And thank you, but I won't read one of his posts closely because most of the posts he makes are ridiculous. He will ask a question, someone will provide him an answer, and nigh on invariably, he'll respond with, "Well would it be better if X was handled in Y fashion?"

The response format which, in and of itself, indicates that he already knew the answer to the question that he initially asked, and was only asking for the sake of someone taking the bait and allowing him to then post in his usual manner. That of a troll.

And when he doesn't respond in a manner that indicates he already knew the answer to the question that he has asked, he just goes straight for "civilly" (heh) insulting people who bothered to respond to him.

Frankly, I don't care if his first language is English or Troll, he has a grasp on English that is just fine for communication, which means that he's capable of both reception and transmission.

I don't. And frankly, it wouldn't matter to me if he did. Being mentally or learning disabled is a crutch not an excuse. Those who try to overcome their disabilities tend to do so. Those who have disabilities and use them as a constant reminder to everyone else that they should be pitied and stay angry at the world in general don't overcome anything. Would I help someone with a mental or learning disability? Sure. If someone with a mental or learning disability continued to behave in an unacceptable manner, that would end very quickly.

Are you trying to say that Popps has Down's Syndrome? SERIOUSLY?

And... nice stretch of imagination and leap to conclusion there.

However, I will say that if someone with Down's Syndrome continued to be a public nuissance, if it were my forum, they'd be banned for doing so.

    Clearly you are.

Then, first, you haven't read far enough back. Second, you've picked up pompoms for him for whatever reason. And third, your distortion of reality does not, in and of itself, actually replace reality.

Oh good lord... get over it already.

Still, your analogy would at least allow for a one way trip to the vet.

Yes, and given your personal posting history, the irony of you using this as an example is almost too ironic to contemplate.

In both cases, you could perhaps reduce the processing load on the EA servers that manifests itself as "server-side lag". But you would also have additional "server-side lag" due to the additional time needed to collect and sync the results from all of the extra servers running the shard processes on the "cloud" or "microcluster".

And in any case, neither of these solutions addresses the issue that with more players on screen you need to download more data to your client, causing additional "connection lag".

  50. Well, no
on all three accounts ... *shrugs*
cloud access would not be EA style *other side of the equator*
Micro clustered ad hoc super computers would run faster than the load lessened servers (both faster than current)
easier and more lag free ^scalable^ access, in case renaissance of RPG ala Rgarriot vision becomes a fad again.
