EM's are back and they are giving it away

I see that items that sell for mega bucks are back on the auction block from EM events.

While I am sure the EM's are trying to do something good, some of the same old issues are back with a new RARE item being given out.

Please see this thread about the sale of one of these items.

I should mention that Nathan passed on his robe from the event

Maybe in the future the EM's will do events that are fun for all and not reward a small number only.

There are no special mods on it. I don't see the problem.

In that case, I have a unique one of a kind never to be repeated item. A nonfunctional PBD with my name on it. That robe may be repeated over and over...

I said this before and I'll say it again.......

It's my opinion that the giving of items by EM's should be a VERY rare if ever occurrence..... instead I'd rather see an event arc that had you go from NPC to NPC to get a "reward/item" something that everyone "could" do for a very limited time (ie 1 week).... and then the item is no more and so is the NPC quest... as well make it so that you can only do the quest ONCE. This way EVERYONE gets something "if" they want it and bother doing the quest.... and I also think that any item given should be purely of a deco nature and not have any "mods" other than it's name....

I'd rather see the EM's focus on community..... also...... I would prefer that if the EM's did an event that they left behind some "commemorative" thing for the entire SHARD to enjoy not just one or two individuals..... Such as a plaque or a book or some kind of small memorial at a cave or something..... a pillar dedication for bravery and hard work that the entire community can enjoy......

This would not only get rid of the "Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie" crowd who only show up at events to "Get the item" and sell it.... their only interest being in the "value" of pixels.... and allow folk who actually enjoy the event to enjoy it without having to compete with people who are from other shards who in my personal opinion have NO business participating in events on other shards. Would also allow the EM to focus more without having 30 people screaming "I want this, I want that! Gimmie one!"...... every 2 seconds. I also think the EMs really need the "squelch" ability.... as well as have the backing of some GM's during "key" events so you cut out the folk who are spamming things that should NEVER be said in-game.

    Anyway that's my opinion.

I like the monuments idea. Each shard would have their own monuments. Have like a big statue of Blackthorne on a horse or something. I'd have to say there should definitely be a monument when Magencia gets rebuilt.

Let's just convert all regular shards into TC clones. Then people can just use a "Give me XXXX" commands and have whatever they want.

And everyone will have the same arties and rewards, which can never be lost.

And they can live in the same houses with exactly the same decoration.

And everyone will spend their days happily ever after in Trammel.

I fail to see what the problem with handing out trinkets to preserve a unique UO memory is.

Who cares if some people sell them?

I have my own thoughts on the LS event, I was there, but this post isn't about the LS event, or any other event.

This is about EM events, and rewards for them, in general.

I have a hard time imagining anyone showing up to an EM event without the hope of some kind of tangible reward, sadly....The days when UO players would do things without tangible rewards are, I think, long gone.

Leaving aside how anyone might feel about that, I think it's a fact. (I look forward -not really, I'm being sarcastic here- to the inevitable post blaming this on Trammel....I have a nice LOL waiting, if I notice it.)

So I think it's very necessary that there always be some kind of tangible reward. Tangible rewards for in-game, manufacturer sponsored events are part of the long history of UO. Seer events had rewards. Go to the Glowing Orb Museum on LS if you want to see one of them. There was a time when a 15% HCI, 35% DI, 50% Hit Lightning katana would have been a good item....There's one at the Glowing Orb. It's named Spark. It's still got a coolness factor to it, even though better items are now commonplace. I bet it'd sell for 100m based on rarity alone. (I think there's only one.)

Having said that? No one should show up for an EM event expecting a reward, feeling entitled to one, or willing to judge the event by whether or not he or she personally gets a reward.

The reward distribution system could be the fairest, most objective system ever devised, and there's still good odds that you, personally, are not going to get ones. If they gave out rewards to everybody, the rewards would lose meaning, and people will complain.

To go to an event for a chance at a reward is one thing. That's just a playstyle.

To go to an event expecting or feeling entitled to one is just stupid, because strictly by the numbers the odds are going to be really against you. Count the players on the screen, and consider that there's maybe, maybe in the neighborhood of 1 to 10 rewards to hand out. If there were only 20 players, and 10 rewards, that still means half the people won't get one. And sometimes there's a lot less rewards than 10, and a lot more players than 20.

If you are absolutely 100% not going to enjoy your time at an EM event unless you get something, then don't show up. It doesn't matter how good the event is, how fair the distribution system is, there's excellent odds you're going to hate your time.

Go do something else. Plenty to do in UO.

So yeah I think that's it for me for now...In summary, the events need to have rewards; for a player to go wanting a reward is one thing; but if you expect a reward or won't like the event unless you get one? Don't bother, there's great odds you're going to have a miserable night.

How so? Do you mean you think they'll cancel the program again based on these reactions? If so, I doubt it; I think they were expecting this.

I believe the problem is someone is making a lot of gold off something that was NOT given to the OP. The green monster is rearing its ugly head, that's all. :sleep2:

From what I get, only the OP has a problem with the items. For the other people who responded, it sounds like it's the unwanted people they attract to "their game" that they have a problem with.

Why does "fun" have to equate with "rewards" for you? I did the EM event and had fun without being given a reward. Sure, I would have liked to have been selected for a reward but it didn't ruin my week nor cause me any loss of sleep. What you, and countless others posting, need to realize is that this is a game. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose but you should always have fun.

  18. Hmm... how about EM gifts that are somehow character bound? Can't be traded, locked down or worn by any other character?

BUT, that said... I fail to see the harm even after reading the posts. If someone has the gold to waste on an EM reward that someone else got, so what? It doesn't in any way increase the amount of gold in the UO economy and has zero overall effect.

What does everyone really expect to happen? People like rare stuff. Every day there are posts how people want full book cases and hitching posts and whatever. They complain that they should be common and cost too much money.

Then the developers make it (easily) obtainable. But guess what? "Oh, I don't even need this hitching post" or "It takes too much work to make this." These items are only cared about because they are rare. The moment they become not really rare they are tossed aside and the focus shifts to something else.

So instead of sulking about how someone else owns it, get it for yourself. Because when it gets handed to you later you won't even want it.

  20. I have two of the crafter hitching post, I made them from the items I got, set at two of our homes on Sonoma, but you cannot recharge more then twice, I been told, so we have our set to owner only and use in emergency only. I rather have the 11th anniv one as that can be recharged with no worries.

As for the full bookcase I have yet to catch the books in Bedlam for it and non are for sale in Luna, so I am assuming the ones in Bedlam are being used to make bookcases or they ship off shard.

Either way does not matter as I said before they should have used the four doom books to make this bookcase, thus making a market for those books in game, today those very books are toss in the trash by players in game to make room for items in the home. I cannot sell them on my vendor and have lower the prices to almost giving them away. Its the same with low level arties that we have today, sometimes I wish we could turn them in for points at the Library and Museum.

If you see my post on Halls you'll see iv been to virtually every servers event and won nothing (even on the 3 servers i play) I'm not bothered at all its been the best weekend of my UO life since they stopped events. Running around finding clues dying loads killing monsters just to see 5 people get a normal item re hued and re named, when i was 6th!!! who cares "ITEM HORES" Yeah would be nice to get one OFC who wouldn't, but if you'd been to them all (eg sonoma im a noob have nothing not even clothes,, but was fun to see people bringing the candy hearts back to hand in then seeing who won)

If you dont find it fun dont do it simple..... if you dont find it fun cos you didn't get an item then grow up, mum and dad shouldn't have to still give you everything you want when your still 30 and living at home...................................

Well, I for one don't mind the rewards - my only wish would be that they're shard-bound and can't be xsharded....

Character-bound would be a bit harsh though, as some people might want to wear them on a different char than the one who completed the quest/killed the monster/whatever else the event asks for.

Well number 1 this is the first item ive seen so that seems VERY RARE since its never happend before with this group.

Second your only upset because you didn't get one. 9/10 times that is the reason. The other 1/10 is its got mods.

Now if you were given the robe you would take it. It is a ROBE that is recoginizing a FRICKEN event that people went to. Who cares!

I DIDNT GET A 2008 V-DAY CHAMP ROSE. Those need to be deleted. Shesh its remembering an event that went on. You people will find anything to complain about if you dont get it.

The event on LA was fun, but for me got spoiled because the Saturday version was set up to where 3/4 of the participants were still out on the "scavenger hunt" phase of the event, when it progressed to the "now we go kill the 50 monsters that have the keys for the 5 items".

I didn't really care whether or not I got an item - but the fact that many of us never even got the opportunity to be in the running because of poor design (the scavenger hunt required 5 common items - three of which were hard to get {random monster drops}, and only one person completed the quest, it triggered the next stage {which we didn't know} - but if someone brought in Item 1, while Item 5 was all that was needed, they were told to go out after item 2). I understand most of these issues got corrected on the Sunday running of events, but they shouldn't have happened in the first place (especially since there were a bunch of people that didn't even DO the scavenger hunt, that got to go on the key hunt for the prizes, just from sitting at the NPC and waiting for the gate, while everyone else was out gettign items - and most the item gatherers never made it to the gate before it dropped)

Ok, I didn't read it all, so apologies if I repeat anything.

Rewards should not be anything "uber" or "overpowered." Nothing that will even be comparable to artifacts. Nothing that can be sold for 100mil or anything. That way you wont get whiners who complain because their gift is only worth 1mil and someone else got one worth 100mil

Simple items with an engraving on it in recognition for what it was symbolizing. Such as "to Bob for (insert accomplishment here)"

I don't give a bilge rat's arse about these items and people trying to sell them for millions. The items have no special functionality, they are merely decorative. If someone wants to spend 50 million on a EM sash, I say it is their decision to do so.

Those items have no influence on the gameplay whatsoever. We should not worry about such negligibilities!

Well....what's worse? Selling an agapite crafted smith's hammer for 5.5 million in hopes someone will think it's a agapite runic....or selling an event item for 20 million? You can find both around Luna on Catskills.

This thread is full of annoying. :(

Atlantic's event was apparently the best, everyone who participated got the same reward I was the first done, can't even complain, I got my name on an event item & regardless of the mods, properties, anything of that sort, the only part that mattered really was it having "Noximos" on it. lolz

People need to grow up, it's a virtual item..if they want to sell it, let them sell it, don't knock their hustle because you didn't get the loot.

  34. Wonder if making a LARGE PARTY Group at the start of the EM event would fix this. The EM would be the broadcaster, no one else could post in the chat channel, but all instructions would be broadcast there. This would also take care of the spamming twinks. Only the EM could add or drop players, or maybe they would get added automatically when entering the area around the EM.

That way, you would never miss the advancing stages of an event.

    Whaddyathink?

First, it's a great start at improving Events. Therefore knowing EA I'd say it's already on their radar. Judging by the speed -- in lack of a better word in my efforts in well deserved sarcasm -- they implement fixes and features, you can expect it to be a feature your grand-children MIGHT enjoy IF UO is still here by then.

Second.. What exactly do you think you're doing? This is UO! People like a certain poster who replied weirdly at the very least, love it BECAUSE it works the way it does. As in a very elitist, power-hungry, power-gamer's way with functionality bearable only by those who do not care much for their social or mental health in the long run. As in, not a game for some of us.. but a way to make money.. Just to make it crystal clear.

Lastly give them credit.. at least from what I hear the latest EM items do not have crazy mods or anything. Although it's too late for it to matter, plus Events are still for those who want items and nothing else.

EMs are no longer allowed to create items that have mods on them, so only decorative items can be made... people have always sold items and theres nothing wrong with that but for me personally, i usually dont like to do things unless i know theres some chance of a reward in the end, the old EMs used to do events toward the end and never give anything out, it wasn't even an exciting event to begin with, but these new EMs had fun events + the possibility of winning something

  37. LOL During Spring turn in my thief and arty Vendor stay empty, they bought my vendors out the very morning of the patch on TC and when it went live on the shards I was turning in stuff right and left. Was great to see all the crate thiefs running around in Doom, the dojo etc.. I camped in the resing room myself for a week, grabbing all the stuff I could there.

But since they turn off the spring clean up NPCs there been no market for anything, no one is buying, my two thief vendors have 125 items on them and all I do is drop gold on them to keep them paid, I quit picking up the Doom books, rock, skull, Dojo bowls, small paintings, fans, baskets, mines basket and such as I cannot sell the stuff, [most going for 500gp or way less]. When I do take the thief out its to the CS to steal the new items, or to check for the major items in Doom or Dojo such as the saddle or swords stand. So it would be nice if they had something where we could turn in those items at the library or museum for points.

My take on event items is this:

    1) There should DEFINITELY be event items that are given out to participants in an event. Perhaps designing events so that some effort on the behalf of a limited number of recipients is required in order to get said item. I don't know exactly how to quantify it, but it could be done by event, such as the first five people to bring back a book with specific contents within it, or the first five people to return with a resource... Of course, I still think that things such as finding something special on a corspe is fine too.

    2) There will AWALYS be the greedy, regardless of whether or not it's an event, a rare white holiday bell, a rare surfer statue, whatever... some people collect things, other people sell them. *shrugs* While I don't EVER think that items should become Account Bound (more on that later), I DO think they should maybe become "NO TRANSFER" (again, more on that).

    3) I ALSO agree that there should, for each Event Moderator, be a "museum" that they choose in-game that houses specific items that are memorable from particular events, and which contain a tome or two indicating what transpired during the events. Someplace where history can be met. And maybe it's not ONE museum, but a museum location within each city, where events that took place in or near that city are memorialized.

    AS FOR THE OTHER SIDE...

ACCOUNT BOUND or PLAYER BOUND (ie: NO DROP/NO TRADE) items are BAD for Ultima Online. While they're great for World of Warcraft, for UO, they really take away from the sense of freedom that UO conveys. If I manage to get a robe or a sword or a weapon or a small lantern, I want to be able to put it on display in my house/museum/whatever so that others can see it. Or, if someone else isn't into shard history, and I am, I want to be able to buy it to preserve it for history.

NO TRANSFER would be my solution, meaning that EM items are bound to the SHARD that they were created on, and CANNOT be transfered to another server. That would COMPLETELY eliminate the cross-shard trading of EM items, and would guarantee that either the item would remain vital to the shard it was from, or would at least appropriately be lost to the winds of time.

Just my thoughts, but I'm sticking to them. :)

I really don't see what the issue is here. To be honest, I'm just tickled to death that there are EMs in the first place.

Cats had an event Sunday night with just a small few getting an EM item.

    Here's what I got:

    - Something to do.
    - Some fun with friends.
    - A headache from the gimme people.
    - A good lol at the people who would flock to the EM whenever he moved.
    - Some good ol' unscripted role-play centering around it all.

Nothing for me but I think I still turned out good.

I say let people get it and do what they want. There's always going to be something, and honestly there's something to be said about items that aren't on everyone's steps. I honestly don't want a carbon copy of any of my ugly houses with all the same items in it.

  40. We had two events last weekend, you know what I got Saturday during the EM event? A lot more gold at the Tokuno CS then before, In Prep for the Sunday event, hunted at Tokuno CS, watched a DvD and went to bed early as I knew it be a D&P show like Saturday's event was. There was to be a third event Sunday morning on Sonoma, but the EM forgot the time zones so missed our wedding, but did give us the rings after and ask if we wish to reschedule, [we said no]. When you wait for 30 minutes and have already said your vows to each other, witnessed by our friends there is no need to reschedule.

I've been reading the posts about event items on UO Hall, they nay sayers are either hyprocrites or immature and have no idea what life is about. People collects it is as simple as that. Only when we are faced with starvation or execution is when that is trumped. Since in no way we are faced with that in a virtual game, by saying "items shouldn't be allowed" is just idiotic. One OP said items shouldn't be x sharded, then please at this time go through your house and only keep items made from your state and throw everything else out. One OP said items shouldnt be given out well then don't you ever buy anohter souvenior in your life again and reject all birday or xmas presents. I mean really, its ONLY A GAME. Different strokes for different folks. You don't like it don't buy or partake in it but don't pose your opinion to prevent others from enjoying it.

You raise a good point, but I disagree that being faced with death doesn't exist in a virtual world.

Pre-tram, players were faced with the possibility of death every day, and that, for many people, was ultimately the entire point of playing. You train your character to become strong enough to protect themselves, you build up allies, friends, guilds.

The endgame was to be in a position of safety, power, and supremacy, in a hostile world.

Nowadays the endgame is to be a rich ****er sitting in a house full of money and rares, in a hostile economic environment ;)

People can argue against this all they like but that is how the game's developers have made it, intentionally or otherwise. Even the ingame events are seen by most players as just one more way of getting rich.

It's symptomatic of a world where death means nothing and your items and property all last forever, and UO can NEVER move on from this.

That's not to say there aren't some GREAT people playing this game - UO's playerbase on the whole is one of the best ever, and in the vast sea of "item quest online" games, UO is definitely the nicest - mostly because it started it's life as a true "free world" roleplaying game, and that has stuck with it in some form or another, and always will.

I don't know that the endgame pre-Trammel and post-Trammel are as different as you said...I remember plenty of people pre-Trammel exploiting to get castles and rares. I remember in particular this one guy on LS....He'd exploit and cheat, get banned, and would be back a week later with a 7x GM PK mage that had the same name, with a castle full of rares. Somehow I don't think simple survival/conquest was his aim.

I agree, however, and have repeatedly said, that many players are too greedy and see rewards as an entitlement rather than as "hey, cool, I got something!" I have no objection to someone showing up to get a reward. I don't object to people treating EM events as a kind of prospecting game, sticking your pick axe in the mountain hoping that gold pops out. I do, however, have an objection to someone judging an event solely by whether or not he or she gets a reward.

I don't know that that's "most" players, though. I think it's probably just the most vocal ones.

Heh....I have no idea if I just agreed with you, disagreed with you, or both.

Of course the endgame of rares and riches existed pre-Trammel, but I would say the split was probably *something* like

    60% power/survival/alliances
    20% rares/riches
    20% roleplay

and now it's probably closer to

    80% rares/riches
    10% power/survival/alliances
    10% roleplay

Of course those numbers are probably way out, but the shift in overall proportions is almost certainly right. None of those categories have anything to do with friendships of course, which are a basic part of virtually everyone's online experience.

The difference with pre-Tram (and what a lot of people didn't like) was that the power/survival/alliances part was a requirement of gameplay, whereas you were perfectly free to opt out of the rat race of rares and riches, and be able to fully enjoy the game with hardly any gold at all. Now the tables have turned 180 degrees, and the rares/riches (or at least, riches) aspect of the game has become the requirement.

100% agree with that. It was stupid to add a new set of books. Also agree there should be some turn in for low level arties. Maybe turn in 40 before you get an item. Or add the Doom books to the libary turn in. Items that would make sense for that particular turn in place. Library wouldn't have a use for gold bricks, but books they would.

    In Reply to Galenknighthawke:

How bout the EM's create events where the "reward" is a shard deco item (like the Skara Faire Grounds on Baja) or a new non tamable creature or animal, or a newly decorated town building etc.

Let us test how many would participate in a community event with a community reward!!!

Let us NOT Ass U Me folks only respond to personal items or personal rares.

    My thots,

    Elladan of Baja

I do agree that the end game varies depending on how long you have been playing. I've done all the slaying, house building, crafting, etc... 5 years ago from a 11 year account. So to me the only thing fun are these events because its something differernt. Sure I get a kick or two when there are new expansions but its been a while since we've had that. I guess it really depends on how long one has been playing, I can see that someone who played for 1 year has a very different point-of-view than someone with 10 years.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are in the process of reviewing the way items are handled in the events. We are working toward a fair resolution regarding this.

    I dont believe this...

I've never had a EM item, never been awarded one or bought one. They are prizes for whatever, people pay loads of gold for them? its up to them. As long as the items arnt unbalancing but Deco then whats the harm?

Let the collectors do what they enjoy while you do what you enjoy... Sheesh
