Ultima Online has been around for 15 amazing years. The problem is that eventually another game is going to come along that is another sandbox but just more developed. Ultima Online needs to switch to a free to play model and bring people back as well as attract new players. All the devs would have to do is limit the free to play as only a single character with no housing or co ownership.

To the best of my knowledge there has been no change of policy since the last time this question was asked and answered by Jeff Skalski.
Is there a reason to discuss it yet again?

Yes the reason to discuss it is because UO is failing. F2P is a big success for many many games. Ask around, If you have the option to play for free vs pay which are you going to choose? F2P.. and almost all F2P games have a pay to play option that gives you unrestricted access to all content.

The DEV team stated not very long ago that they have NO intention of going ftp now or any time soon. End of story.

UO is not failing as long as I log in its a win win. When someone besides me logs in its another win win for uo.

F2P is not free. Go to some F2P game out there and play for a month and then come back and tell us how much $$ you were asked to pay to actually advance in the game.

league of legends, combat arms, blacklight retribution, perfect world international, dungeons and dragons online, age of conan (actually do need to pay to play this one but u can try a lot for free)... just to name a few!

    Perfect World.com check it out.

I suppose I was a bit harsh with saying it's failing, but idk I guess this huge resurgance of players is a good thing. WAIT A MINUTE!?!?! there isn't one... jeez that explains why I log in and see 10 people on my entire server. AH BUT classic siege perilous line ! just because you don't see us doesn't mean we aren't there. Uhm yeah it does..

And the F2P is the new model for almost every game. Wait until Neverwinter comes out, ah I'm so excited for that one.

Seriously tho you think people are going to come try UO out then pay a monthly fee to play a 15 year old game that is full of bugs and glitchs and has pretty bad graphics compared to every game made in the past 10 years? I love this game it's awesome, it gives you a lot of freedom and options and it's just.. raw. But seriously use your heads! IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!

And I am not saying F2P gets houses or multiple toons or even access to anything other then Tram/Fel. What it does is increases the exposure of the game SO WE CAN GET MORE PEOPLE TO PLAY.

Also if we do have to pay then why is it that nothing can ever be done when we get hacked? I've lost about 10 friends to being hacked in the past few years. I'm talking old beta players to 6 months into the game. What is our fee used for? It's quite confusing to me what our money does.

Really? This nonsensical topic again with the same nonsensical claims? You keep comparing it to other games out there but...
What good would F2P even do if we don't advertise the game?

I would rather UO die a dignified death Then see it go the way of F2P and UO would not be easy to convert to F2P and last and most important they have said not going to happen.

I think people hope the free sharders will come back but it's highly unlikely. Even if the servers are the same in every way you are expecting people to give up what they have there to start up blank here. It's no different than saying I could save $10 a month to play over there but I'd be out "000's" for what I gave up here...all said I'd rather just let it all rot away.

Most people (if not all) didn't go to free shards because of the monthly fee. They left to free shards because of the changes to the game, the different flavors of UO that were out there. Making UO F2P wouldn't draw them back because as far as they're concerned, it's still the same UO to them. Sure they may log in but they certainly wouldn't contribute money to a game they no longer like. F2P or not, this game still has to make money to keep going.

Meh I understand it's not gonna happen and as popps said hes happy to pay UO. I firmly believe it would be the best course of action to help the game. That's my opinion. And I know of a lot of F2P games that have large amounts of people playing. I just find it ignorant that everyone is ok with the way things have been going. Steady decline of players, mediocre servers, people getting hacked without any chance of being compensated, and everyone is ok with this? I personally am not.

Bioware makes great games, but they didn't make UO. And I doubt that they have the ability to "fix" it .. if it's even possible. Then again you won't ever make everyone happy. And that's why they make thousands of new games a year. The thing that UO has done is establish that sandbox games like this are a bad idea. UO will exist forever because everyone uses it as a model of what not to do.

Techinally Uo is f2p as you can start a new account with 15 Days to check it out and the return to Brit lets people log on every year to see if they like it now and the new contents. Basically the same as free to play you can't do a lot of the things on a trial account that you can on paid

You could play Uo forever if you wished to play f2p just by starting a new trial account every 14 days :p

How, exactly, would F2P fix any of that? UO is not advertised and relatively unheard of in todays market, so I doubt F2P would bring in any significant surge of players. Everything else is completely unrelated.

I played here beta, left for many years and guess what, I am back. A friend plays here and asked me to come play. It is totally different now but I know free servers depend on donations and some of them free servers let you play for free with limitations. Example: you get one char to play and no house for the free play BUT if you want a house or more than one char you pay 7$ a month which also includes more access to the shards forum site as well. Now not all free shards do what I just stated, that was just an example. A lot of free shards are considered pay to win which means if you do not donate and get the sweet items you receive by donating you have a harder time in game which really is a pay to play. Do not understand that terminology.... let me explain.... Some/a lot free shards have donation systems which they offer certain items in game for your kind donation. Joe next door played for years and acquire all his items by playing and working hard as he could and is very proud of his shield/weapon or whatever. Betty Lu comes along and "donates" and gets this super item that took Joe a long time to get JUST because she donated. This is a great example of pay to win which is just like pay to play. So, again, I say, 10$ a month and watch them return..........:next:

That seems to be more fantasy than even the game we play. F2P is up to each game creator what they want to make of it. Do people really think we're getting our moneys worth? They cut staff to the bone, no expansions, no boosters, more restrictions, add a ton of things to the store to buy like a F2P game but we still pay $14+ for a months subscription...

Less for More! No wonder people have quit in droves.

I'm against F2P UO for several reasons, but one of the main ones, is the rampant cheating. I played Lineage II when it launched, like 2 months after it launched; I bought the game and played it. The cheating wasn't too bad; and I only caught a guy clipping through the walls one time, and I was able to report him and he was gone in the next 5 minutes. He was cussing me out just for looking at him; truth be told I would have just not even paid attention till the guy started cussing me out. Anyhow; about 8 months down the line; you began catching guys botting and hacking non stop in that game. It was terrible. Adena spam (which is their gold), every 5 seconds; along with a server wide spam every 30 minutes "Attention players, this is a reminder telling you that illegal use of 3rd party software and RMT will result in immediate banning of your account" which at that time was total bs, because you could watch trains of bots running the same spot for days at a time accumulatin.. ok I'll stop my L2 rant.

Anyhow it went free to play (and holy omg wtf bbq) is it so filled with bugs, the server is super laggy, and I didn't meet a single person who hasn't botted or bought adena. All the while they all talk trash about people who do it; and no I've not seen any type of repercussion for it, you either break the rules or get your butt kicked in that game. Like, I've experienced periods of unplayable lag here in UO, and seen a gold spam here and there with the occasional same guy shouting for 2-3 days every couple of minutes; along with the very rare these days scripting lumberjack/miner/skiller upper but Lineage II is just un-enjoyable at it's base levels; once you hit 85 (which surprisingly can take as few as 1 and a half days if you are totally unobligated to do anything that day) you get into the "grind". 85 to 86 solo can take upwards of a week for some; 86-87 is where most quit the game or decide they have to bot, and 88+ 99% afk botters who are in the "top" clans talking trash to everyone else worse than you could imagine any trash talk in UO.

Let's move on to Aion; another NCSoft game gone F2P(which is a total failure imo). The game is 100% completely free as far as being able to make I think it's 5 characters per server, access to all content every area, any skill use, all classes etc. What pay for in that game is costumes (and lordy do the women basically get down to a see through bikinis in some places, straight to japanese schooll girl mini skirts with panties sticking out the bottom etc.. they sell to perverts) The people that play that game are constantly of the lowest tier of human existence, who have no grammar skills, argue with reason and stray into packs of creatures you intend to avoid when speed running through dungeons, kinah spam (I believe they have tried to contest the kinah spam a little, first it was a 30 second cooldown to speak in global chat, in which the RMT'ers began making 40-50 kinah spamming accounts to spam; then it became a you have to be level 20 to use anything other that /say or /guild but they still all over) speed hacks rampart wall clipping hacks, completely non-existant gm support if you get stuck good luck, occasional loss of your "NC COIN" which is what you buy with real money to get access to stuff in the cash shop. Granted there are some things you can purchase in the cash shop which affect how quickly your earn experience points, Abyss points (their method of keeping track of your progress in pvp and the currency with which you buy your "pvp gear") and perhaps some totally uncalled for overpowered potion (which is like 20 bucks per 5 iirc) which I've not met a person buy yet. Oh yeah, and your typical botting problems, but they do not bot for xp on Aion. They get up to 55-56 and move to an area called Sarpan and fire up the bots to farm kinah.

I only read about Dungeons and Dragons online; but having read what I have read, I have gathered that unless I want to play in a very small portion of dungeons and don't care to have any kind of inventory space then F2P is the way to go. Perfect World Online seemed to cutesy for me, even though I am a cat person that just seemed way out. Granted that is not a solid argument for why F2P doesn't work, I believe the game is wildly successful for what it is, and I've seen a few interviews of the guy who started it up and he seems pretty sincere about most of his claims. Then there's Age of Conan. Oh AoC. I bought it at launch, and aside from having to upgrade my computer I didn't have a lot of problems with it at first. Once I left Tortegal (I think that's the name of the start area); I immediately saw the tarnish which drew me away. The pvp. Completely imbalanced and extremely exploitable. I ran into people who chain killed eachother for 3 days until they hit rank 5 ( I believe that was the highest rank), and were able to purchase gear that completely outclassed anything available both for pvp and pve. I experienced extreme lag, and was on the highest tier of cable we could get where I lived, and the class I played was Assassin. Hide was completely worthless. Someone had created a macro not even a 3rd party program that would loop when pushed that spammed reveal. A person with 1 reveal could detect a person with 200 hide unerringly from the moment they pushed that 1 key til they logged out at which point, they just had to push that key when they logged back in. Several classes could hide, assassin, ranger, and barbarian if I remember correctly. Anyhow this was at launch and a good while before it went free to play. I recently retried AoC, purely to see if it had improved. I had to purchase all the expansions (which I got an email telling me because I was a launch person and they went to F2P i was given access to those... guess not), hide was still completely worthless, I had monsters which were no where near my level just revealing me and attacking me. They wouldn't attack unless I was in hide. For shame. Anyhow; combat was pretty sluggish; way worse than at launch. And I eventually saw another play leaving a town I was in. Keep in mind, my character is an assassin, and I had my run skill maxed out. I was infront of this person and began moving toward them. I opened with a nasty combo, and started working them over. They did something to get out of the wildness and began running down the road. I could not keep up. Were they higher level and had more skills in run? I don't know. But that seemed kinda shady to me. So that was my return to AoC. Same crap that kept me from getting into in the first place.. not made better by F2P. Anyhow, I've ranted enough on F2P games.. let me move onto my point.

Reasons why UO should not go F2P; even though bugs and lag exists, you'll have a slew of people who don't give a damn about anybody or anything at all; with no money flooding your server and finding every single hack they can and possibly even making their own to get in an ruin your play time. I should mention the vocabulary and pure sense of entitlement amongst the people in Aion alone is shocking; and I had previously mentioned the chat in another F2P game on facebook which is text and still pictures "Dreamworld". These guys are elite rapists who will find out where you live and kill your mommy. They said so.. OH NO better watch out! Granted you aren't just thrust into the chat in DW, you have to click a button for it and it pops up after that; but there's literally no pvp in that game outside the arena, in which you participate against a computer controlled version of another player. So there really isn't pvp. Just kids with no sense. (Like most of us, just 20-25 years younger hehe).

I think maybe 1 or 2 positive things will emerge from UO going F2P though, people who spend their 13 bucks a month on subscription may spend 13 bucks (or so) in the little cash shop that's already there, more people will play the game and you won't log into ghost towns as often. The flip flop of that, people who've paid all these years may just up and leave because of the betrayal!! And their replacements are people who don't spend anything but demand fixes to bugs and other problems already existing with the game. It's a lot more difficult than just saying, F2P; it's time. Well, maybe not; but it should be.

Oh yeah, LoTRO @ _@. I won't even go there.

F2P is a horrible idea. If they go to that business plan we will have even less support and evolution of the game.

Just like every other player as soon as the game becomes worth less to me than the monthly subscription I will cancel.

For now the cost I pay a month to the time I play = very low. For me the cost to game actually saves a ton of money or I'd be spending my time doing something that costs way more

If UO goes F2P, someone can have my stuff. For the measly fee of $0.50 per item of course.

For less than a cost of a movie, I get 30 days of enjoyment. IMO the cost is well worth it.

The Devs clearly stated that UO would not go F2P, that should be end of story.

Just like all the Classic Shard threads that plagued the boards forever, that finally started being locked, these types should be as well.

Here we go..lock it if you don't agree..as I stated above I don't agree but why lock it let the thread die out nobody is idling a gun to your head saying READ READ READ! You choose to read if you don't like state your reason why and move on elsewhere..it's a discussion forum to "discuss".. There are people who want to discuss maybe not you but I'm sure there is..just don't read it if it hurts you oh so much..this is more if a message to everyone rather than you sorry if I come off as speaking to you but your post had a comment about locking them..sorry :/

Too bad that "No means NO!" anthem is already taken by another situation... Sure could use it on this topic.

Let's tone it down a bit there, cazador. This discussion will go no where. That is a given. It may remain open as long as the discussion is civil. It will likely not... *shrugs* Then this topic will fall into the same category as Classic Shard, etc.

We could ask, for the sake of discussion, what pros and cons could come with trial accounts being endless. That would probably be the closest thing to a F2P UO we could get.

Just an idea to toss out there since the discussion of a general F2P model for UO is sort of a dead-end topic.

    ...

Put up a Classic Shard accessible only by the 2d Client and make it free to play with no further attention other than keeping the shard stable, then upgrade the EC to something amazing and make it the only client for the main shards and continue them being pay to play with advancements, rebalances and tweaks to improve the game as a whole.

*steps back and watches the fireworks*

    Kelmo I think your right.
Seriously, after reading this thread and digesting the whole thing I made my statement not to cause trouble but to point out that yes the Dev and its Producer answered this fully. The rest is my feeling for the idea. You see after playing a few f2p games and so forth 2 things came out of it.
The first was that many people who do the f2p will find ways around the rules and not pay for things that should be... I have watched them brag of this and show off what they do.. teaching others to do same. Not a good thing for the paying players of that game(no i wont mention the games as it is not the point i am making)
The second is the loyalty to the game. We here at UO are a adicted lot. This game has become part of our language out of the game as well as in. We play at all hours of the day and night, even when we should be sleeping for work/school the next day. Our kids are following in our footsteps into UO.... The f2p people ... can they develope this? That question is hard to answer if there is a limit to how far they are willing to go in getting hooked to UO.

Cazador sweety you have a way of getting your panties in a bunch when your faced with an opinion thats other then yourown.
Kelmo has alot of exp in the classic shardish tones, this is getting there and I see his point. Relax and look at things you read here in Stratics from both ends. It saves hair on your head when you want to pull it out from fustration. Not to mention blood pressure that can get elevated dangerously. Grab a cup of your fav drink, a cookie or 2 and relax. We are not here to hurt anyone.

Let's not. OK? I understand your agenda. We are a fan site. I promise... if I could, I would give everyone the perfect game that they desire. I imagine anyone would do that... if they could.

Let's upgrade the Classic Client with the bells & whistles they've tried to make the EC attractive with and give the CC a larger game window so those forced to use the EC due to their monitors not working at other than it's native resolution can have a larger play window, then send the EC to join the Third dawn & KR clients in the trash can.

Wonder how many EC users would shift back to the CC if the CC had a larger game window? Maybe I ought to start a poll and see how much the numbers change concerning Ec vs CC users.

    <laughs with a very amused grin>

What did you expect kelmo? Dermott comes off with his anti-CC comments and I make my pro CC replies. It's as normal as the sun coming up in the east. :)
