It has come to my attention that fc/fcr do not apply in pvm if you have the protection spell on. I have recently been thinking about dusting off my mage and going out to pvp with her again.

My question is: Does fc/fcr work in pvp if you have protection on?

I tried to test it out yesterday. I went to fel and tried casting a few spells with protection on, and it seems that the cast time was the same as it was in tram with protection.

I dont see how a mage would pvp without the protection spell on, so I was thinking it would have to be different than in pvm. Unless their intent was to make fc/fcr totally worthless.

OK here is how protection works, no matter what your FC casting the protection spell will cause your FC to return to 0, no matter what skill, protection does not affect your FCR, with protection on, your spell casting will not be interrupted.

So it works the same for both pvp and pvm?

According to descriptions it just lowers your FC by 2, never going below 0 though.

Per everything I know, Protection works the same in PvP and PvM.

When you think about it, Protection is carried with you, not carried on what you're fighting.

I don't see a way for the code to know what you're going to target when you cast a spell, and that's really the basic difference between PvP and PvM spell-casting, what you're targeting.

Sure the code can tell what's hitting you, and it can tell what you're hitting once you target it. But when you're talking about casting a spell before you target anything, how would the code know whether or not to apply the FC reduction?

A lot of things never get updated. It sets your FC to 0 no matter how much you have on.

In that case the info on uoguide and stratics needs some updating on protection.

This is correct. No matter you have 0, 1, 2 or 6 FC on it will take your FC to 0. Otherwise you would see whole lot mages running with 4 FC and protection on, casting FC 2 spells without chance of interrupting...

    And UOGUIDE confirms this:

Characters under the Protection spell effect can no longer have their spells "disrupted" when hit. As a result, those affected by the spell experience: decreased physical resistance; a reduction of their Resisting Spells skill value by -35, and a slower casting speed modifier of 2 points. However, this penalty can lower neither Resisting Spells nor the casting speed below 0. This modifier is applied after the cap takes effect, so additional FC above the cap will not counteract the negative effect of this spell. The protection spell has an indefinite duration, becoming active when cast, and deactivated when re-cast. This spell, along with Reactive Armor and Magic Reflection, will stay on—even after logging out —- until you “turn it off” by casting it again. The spell effect will be purged when dying, and Protection has to be re-cast after death.

Lowers FC 4 caps to an FC 2 cap
Lowers FC 2 caps to an FC 0 cap

It will never result in having a negative FC score.
In fact it doesn't even interact with your FC amount, it just lowers the maximum by 2.

Bushido Ninjitsu Spellweaving and Chivalry have FC 4 caps.
Magery Mysticism Necromancy and Chivalry coupled with 70 or more Magery have FC 2 caps.

    My Testing Method:

    Close Wounds:
FC 4: Target Cursor on 2nd blue star
FC 4 with Protection: Target Cursor on the 3rd blue star
FC 2 with Protection: Target Cursor on the 3rd blue star
FC 0: Target Cursor on the 4th blue star
FC 0 with Protection: Target Cursor on the 4th blue star

Tested this 5 seconds ago. To disprove this, you're going to have to cite contrary evidence.
I've tested similarly with magery before, but that was a while ago (5 months max) so I wont use that as evidence.

The blue star is the spell graphic in the Classic Client.

your test is broken, no matter what your casting is, it drops to 0. Everyone would rock FC 4 if it worked that way. Then casting focus would really be worthless, just go into protection and mages would never, ever die.

You completely misread what I wrote. Read it again.
And you can't argue against a position with cited evidence by mere speculation, you have to provide counter-evidence.

Protection only lowers your FC cap by 2. It does not mess with your actual casting speed. only the cap.

Ahh, ok. Explains why it seems to lower FC to 0 regardless of how much you can stock up on.

  17. Miner is correct.

He means for magery spells, protection lowers FC to zero. For chivalry spells, protection lowers FC to 2 (or less, if no FC items are equipped).

I don't know how anyone could PvP with protection on, it's so crutchy noobish. Good sometimes against a dexxer I guess or a mob but eh, unless you run a healer char w/ mysticism hehe or have a friend doing that then I don't know I like the speed better :p

Did you test to see if someone with negative casting would actually be brought up to normal 0 casting instead of -1 or -2 FC?

    1) You need to read the fine print to understand how protection works...

    2) There is a difference between the following... If you don't understand that you will fail to understand how protection works...
-Lowering the FC CAP by 2
    -Giving a -2 FC

    3) SC -1 Weapons / Sheilds / Protection CANNOT take you below 0 FC. This also includes the -2 FC penalty from stoneform.... Miner is correct in what he said. Spulp was not.

But what about Essence of Wind... would that take a caster below 0 FC?

This is an exact and clear answer it lowers the cap, so it is clear that you have fc 0 with magery on your character.

If you don't think stone form will put your char into -fc try this: Cast blade spirits at 0fc/0rec and just count the secs it takes before you get a target cursor, then cast stone form and count the number of secs again.

Do Spellweaving spells even have a cap? I haven't seen anything officially posted saying it was 4/6 or 5/6 or 6/6 even.
