I would like to resurrect an old idea about having buy shops, where instead of only having vendors that sell, you also have vendors who buy items. You stock up the vendor with gold and then you tell it you want XXX amount of Y items and the people can sell those items to the vendor in the reverse manner you buy items from a sell vendor.

This would allow for players who don't have vendors or vendor houses to sell their items, especially things like resources, items, imbue resources, etc. etc.

That's actually a pretty interesting idea.

There are so many items in-game, though. It'd be interesting to see how this would work!

Considering it for a couple seconds and the lack of a global search yet. Attach it to the bank so each player can go to any bank to get items or trade.

The idea is interesting but I have a question. Why wouldn't a player have a vender?

...did you read the first post?

The idea is that this vendor buys things from other players, you stock it with gold, and tell it how many of each thing you want it to buy.

Not everyone can afford a vendor spot in Luna (or they can afford it but they don't have the time or amount of goods to maintain one), and vendors in *most* other places are just a waste of time because traveling around searching for out of the way vendors is a lost art to a lot of the current playerbase.

I originally thought that this idea would burden the suppliers of the items, but as I thought it through, I don't believe it will. If someone wants an item, and the "buy vendor" has not been sucessful, they are going to have to put the effort into getting it. Their ability to obtaine the item is solely based on how much effort they want to put forth in getting it (which is how it is now).

It would be good to see a global search system only allowed at banks, through some type of bulletin board. That way you could see all the "for sale" and "looking to purchase" posts. It would be great if I could recall from the bulletin board to the PC's house to buy or sell the items. The only problem I could see with this is the potential of sifting trough all the stagnant items for sale and blanket demands of "always buying X for Y".

I love this idea. I know it isn't original, but I've never heard it put this way before. Anyone remember the days when people actually checked bulletin boards in the NPC cities and towns?

I don't think this is what you are saying, but I wouldn't want it to be a board where you post items, I would want it to be a database of items currently for sale on vendors, or currently being sought on "buy" vendors.

And the whole business of being able to recall from the bulletin board to the vendor selling the item is perfect. It incorporates the best features of the auction house systems in other games, while still remaining distinctly "UO", in my opinion.

I love this idea, and always have. I'm afraid I'm one of those who hypocritically uses those search sites to purchase items, it would be nice to be able to have the same functionality legitimately.

I'm actually thinking of it as a way for players to set up their own quest npc for a gather quest. I'm a big fan of giving players the power to make content for each other. One man's buy order is another man's quest.

Oh, so you give the NPC its own quest dialog, which it then gives to the player taking the quest and asks for X number of items or other such?

Would be really awesome for RP purposes and general fun. Though buy vendors should be implemented too, as sometimes you just might want to buy a lot of some things or need certain gear you can't find cheap.

If done right, it could give new players something to do, gathering things for more wealthy players (hides, ingots, plant seed resources, etc.)

    Thanks for chiming in.

That's another interesting way of looking at it. I've spent a lot of time thinking about quests in MMO's, but that's ot for this thread.

It would give my Herald something to do, other than being rude to my guests. Of course, I would expect that he would require a payment for his time.

Think of the public "bulletin board" as the interface to that database. It should only be accessable at public places, like banks and other places of commerce (like the Merchant's Guild in upper Britain). Once you post your add on the system, it can be seen from any public "bulletin board".

Other things to consider is a better name to call it than a public bulletin board (don't want to confuse it with the normal house ones, which are great), but I cannot think of anything good right now. It could be tied to the Merchant's Guild in upper Britian, so that you have to complete a quest to use it. Being that it is a service provided by the Merchant's Guild, they would most likely require a fee for using it too.

Of course, he said this "This would allow for players who don't have vendors or vendor houses to sell their items"

I travel around to different malls and out of the way venders to get the best prices. Got quite a bit of runebooks marked for each shop out there. My house is out the way and I get traffic for my prices. I pay 20k a week for rent in luna. Also there is the updated chat system and the old tiime art of standing and selling to players at the bank which promotes interaction. So I don't know why people might have trouble. Is this a siege thing or a dead shard thing? That people have troubles in?
Like I said interesting Idea but so many systems in place I don't know what for.

Maybe use that system as a quest like Mark said. Put some unique fun in there like I go make a quest to gather things for me. Though I usually talk to players and assign them task for me but a easier way of doing it would be cool. Definetely nice idea in that way.

  18. I like this idea except for one thing. The vendor owner would still have to pay a vendor to have it there and stocked, and the seller wouldnt be out anything for selling. Im afraid that most people would then take down all the vendors and go into selling straight out. If this happened there would be no vendors for anyone to sell to and no vendors for anyone to buy from.

I seriously would take all mine down if I didnt have to pay a fee and just had to go around selling to other vendors.

    Maybe refine the idea some?

    Hmmmm....

So my Legendary crafter can set up an npc "apprentice smith" for a few thousand gold, put some questing flavor on it, ask for 10 white pearls, with the reward being 5K each, or perhaps something that the NPC is wearing, like a piece of Valorite plate with 60+ resists, mage armor, 20 lrc?

Just thinking ahead -- it would be good to give the "questors" several options for their rewards, OR to have several types of rewards depending on the items received.

But I guess the simplest answer would be to have "X" items requested for "Y" reward in gold. The problem being that my "Y" reward will probably not be anywhere near what someone else would pay, especially if I have no idea what the "going rate" is. I wasn't aware colored ingots had gone up so dramatically, for instance.

As a side addition, either bulletin board use in the towns to advertise (for a fee) or perhaps a link into the town crier system (for a fee).

I would also suggest it NOT count towards lockdowns, or only towards what the npc is carrying for rewards.

  21. Youd have to find a buy vendor for everyone of your items. Thats unlikely.
I dont think it would be an issue.

  22. Exactly what Im saying. Why would anyone set up a vendor then to sell items, especially on a small shard where your items might sit there costing you gold everyday, when you could just go sell your items, without any cost to you, to a buying vendor?

Lets say you put an arti on the vendor for 1 mil. It doesnt sell for 2 weeks. ( not abnormal for artis) In that time the vendor has charged you 12,000 a day to hold it. thats 178,000. But, you can go to a "buying " vendor and he is willing to pay you 1 mil for it...and you get the gold right then. Which would you do?

I dont think it would take long for many vendors to just disappear.

Im afraid especially for small items such as recalls where the cost to make them is basically the same for everyone, that no one would have recall vendors because it would be so much easier to just sell them outright and not pay a vendor at all.

I think all in all it would make it way to easy to make gold and would then once again mess with the economy.

    Does this make sense?

I'd rather see a global vendor search engine first.

  24. No I understand what your saying for specific items or new items. I think new stuff would be sought after so you could easily find buy vendors.

But there is so much stuff to sell, you would need a sell vendor to display it because finding individual buy vendors would take to long.

Less I am missing your point. I think there is room for both. But Id agree the new high end stuff might go right to a buy vendor. But I bet it would be for less then you could otherwise sell it for.

That is essentially what I was saying. It might be fun to have it connected to the public bulletin boards you find throughout the land. With the ability to recall to the vendor location from the bulletin board.

I think people should just use the trading forums for high ticket stuff instead of wasting vendor fees but that's sensical.

This would be the first step. Might as well have an in-game search. I'm thinking if they do this 3rd party detection stuff, those search sites might get disrupted?

 I can just picture the crowds standing around at the public bulletin board in search for items and then ppl insta-teleporting away.

Eventually maybe even create an Android/iPhone app that can also give us this info offline. Heck... I'd pay for it on my Droid!!!

The majority of the UO populace like any video game does not use forums or if they do, they don't all frequent the same one.

Also sensical is not a word.

This is the best idea for UO I've seen in a very long time.

It has all of the hallmarks of being useful, implementable, fostering in-game activity, and with no obvious disadvantage to anyone.

Folks who say that it'd remove selling vendor activity would be right. But that's no reason to abjure the idea. I think it'd provide balance and take away a lot of the spamming that we see in populous centers.

But it needs to be limited to providing gold for the service. Both as a matter of simplicity, and to prevent potential cheating.
