been playing since early 2002, that said im a casual gamer so you will have to excuse my ignorance to the the likely complex reasons behind why prodo shards are setup the way they are.. but..

I just started seige.. (a side point it feels dead, but we shall see...) but from starting seige, this got me thinking,

can someone simply answer me on the following..

"Felucca" on prodo shards, we have insurance (which from my opinion is what has servilely killed the community)

what where/are the arguments against having insurance on tram and having "Fel" as a no insurance area. now some tramadites will plead that they dont want to loose valuable items when heading into Fel, but the way i see it is, if insurance was removed, then you only have yourself to blaim if you go into fel with items you cannot afford to loose. the people who feel the need to constantly have these items on the characters could all bank sit @luna in tram

surely just the removal of insurance in prodo shards "fel" would make it alot more attractive? and most importantly not so dead

Removing insurance from the other shards would destroy the min/max aspect of the game that many enjoy. With out insurance millions of gold would be lost every time a tweaked suit was lost to an opponent.

I would think that taking insurance off of all Fel's would lessen the already small community that plays there.

correct kelmo they would be lost "IF" that person decided to put that at risk in the first place? - but ok point taken people a particular game style would be limited in doing whats mentioned above.

i guess this question could quickly turn into, we have seige for exactly this, leave the billionaire suit wear's happy and lets just leave it as is.

Ludes.. ive "started" Seige, currently it all feels a little alien at the moment, espically having no "mule" its gohstly there, but then again so is Europa ;) youve reminded me that i actually need to re-download ICQ (recently returned back to uo so havent got anything set up) once i get it up and working ill shoot you a PM)

xalan - is your view based that the people who are currently settled on prodo shards fel, would not stand for the change?

I am not saying we do not run decent suits and gear... we just do not place as much value on them.

dupapa... make some friends on Siege. There is where you get your gear. Bartering and trade is alive and well on Siege.

You are under the mistaken impression that it is insurance which emptied out Fel. If anything the addition of insurance should have and probably did lessen the exodus from Fel on production servers. With insurane and 100% LRC there was nothing for players to lose so why not come to Fel and PVP. Siege with it's no insurance but still using the same system of gear with properties as the other servers emptied out long before Fel on the production servers did. I left SP after AoS because of the lack of people. Fel on Pacific at the time was packed.

The reason Fel on most production servers is feeling the pinch now is probably just due to the lower population in UO as a whole. If a smaller percentage of UO players play in Fel then when there are so few UO players you get and empty Fel. Also take into fact the average age of a vet UO player, then listen to General chat. Long gone are the days of role playing PVP guilds, now all that's left is a bunch of foul mouthed people acting like 12 year olds, trash talking, and cheating.

This is how you win on Siege. People with dissimilar skills working together. You can make it on Siege with a community that supports each other.

It is difficult on your own unless you have a half dozen accounts or 50 soulstones... If that is true you might as well be playing a solo game.

Hmmm .. You didn't mention.. ( I think on purpose) On production shards it got way overdone when I showed up with 30 or 35 members of my guild..

On Siege it's more like the old days..
Oh.. and no disrespect... but I haven't seen you on any shard lately claudia.. where exactly are you playing now?

TRAMMEL -- Trammel was supposed to be an experiment to prove that everyone would prefer Felucca. It didn't happen. Even the Feluccans moved to the safety of Trammel. It's a shame because both worlds had their appeal.

You went from a population bursting at the seems in Fel when that was the only facet. Then you halved the population and filled up Tram and Fel to the brim. Then Malas opened and was filled up completely. At this point all 3 facets were full of houses and people. Then over time the population drastically declines due the the launch of many other MMO's such as WoW etc. We went from 1 game on the market to 2 then dozens. As UO loses population Malas empties out first due to the max housing size of 18x18. Houses in Fel and Tram are consolidated but most of the room is still taken. The population then hits the point where 18x18 spots in Fel sit open but are still used in Tram, as it declines further Keeps, and finally Castle spots.

@ Kelmo: as I stated general population decline, ratio of the % of PVPers to UO players as a whole, trash talking kids, cheaters, older leftover population, it's probably a wide range of causes. I just don't see how "Hey you can't lose your stuff" keeps people out of Fel. It probably has more to do with PVP goals. Powerscrolls are flooded, you can only eat one 120 magery per character after all, eventually you hit a majority saturation. Considering how quickly all the Reds turned into Blue with the addition of Pardons if you removed insurance imagine how quickly the remaining Fel players would relocate to Luna Bank to keep their suits.

@ Ludes: When I left my tamer claudia on SP I started over from scratch on Pacific as Eve L Antagonist, I'm mainly there but pop up now and then on Napa and Atlantic. I don't show up on Siege due to having all my belongings on my 2 characters and I'm not going to use my 1 house per account for a house there instead of castles on Pacific.

The arguments against removing insurance have been gone over many times.

UO's more item dependent since AoS than it was, and losing an item potentially is tantamount to losing skill permanently under the old system. Not all items are as easily replaceable as folks want to argue, due to the many unique ways we have of getting items these days. (The fact that cursed items are considered to be of limited value --not no value but limited value-- is a testimony to the fact that most players recognize this.) Eliminating insurance, especially in Felucca, simply favors to far too great a degree the large, Fel-based, PvP-oriented guilds. Those guilds can more-easily prevent any kind of loss (by preventing corpses from being looted on the field) or replace things that are lost. "But that's community!" No, it's group predatory behavior, which is not the same things as community. It's largely the same principle that made PKs so hard to fight pre-Trammel: Easier to get people to group up in the service of greed and debasement than it is to get them to group up in the service of virtue.

This has been gone over many times, and some folks simply still prefer that there be no insurance, for their own reasons. They will not be persuaded.

    *shrugs*

Fel is a playstyle that most people do not wish to participate in. It's really that simple. When they had a choice called Everquest, they took it. When they had a choice called Trammel, they also took it, but UO was able to stay alive. A long line of incentives, going back to Dungeon Khaldun through power scrolls through double resources through better Transcendence scrolls through the unique and nifty content of the Primeval Lich spawn, has met with only limited success.

According to reports I've read of yesterday's party, Starr Long admitted that making Trammel was necessary. and Richard Garriott implied as such in his thief story, when he said the thief incident made him rethink the rules of the virtual world he had created. He had created a world wherein behavior that was perfectly within the rules would drive people away.

I imagine the revamped dungeon loot had the side effect of being a great boon for playing on Siege. All of it being just as usable as any other item some really powerful, where on normal servers if it's cursed it's unravel fodder. Although I have run into a few people who used cursed items in Trammel only.

At some point after I left it seemed it evolved to where a lot? or most? people use hiding and stealth. That's the reason I've seen been given anyway for there not being anyone around. Back in the day the only stealther I can think of was a tmap/ dungeon lockpicking non-fighting character. I'm not sure everyone stealthing around is a good evolution for Siege though.

The lack of people being the reason I left and the campaign asking for people to come play Siege over the years makes me wonder about the doing fine though. If the campaign has worked and you now have a decent population then good on ya.

We are still there and doing OK. The prey has evolved.

    The predators... not so much.

i woefully misunderstood the reasons why insurance was implemented and also the reasons behind the dwindling fel player base/total player base, but im not surprised at this fact ;)

I'm hoping this thread does not turn out to a SP vs Prodo's, cause in all reality i reckon it could go on an on an on, plus that was not my original intention

on a side note and off orig topic
Ive just taken some more concrete steps into SP, and have to say, i have the up most respect to what the NEW2 guild is doing, as ive just had one of the most welcoming invites to a new shard since Ive played UO,

    Ludes ive added you

It is not my intention either. Siege is a different game.

Felluca offers you seven characters and insurance. Only if you play those rules.

Siege offers you a place where you can be some one.

Trust me. I would be a no one one any other shard.

Siege is the olny shard left you can make a name for yourself.

  27. Yep, that is the reason.

So many people have left UO in general because of all the cheating that is not only allowed, but seemingly encouraged.
