Could someone explain to me why these two critters require 3 control slots?

Because of their awesome abilitys, a ridable mule, or a ridable forge.

Perhaps I should have posted this on UOHall.

hes right tho. they require more slots because of their abilities. the option to transport a pile of 60k gold on your mount from a champ spawn. or the option to mine anywhere and have a portable forge with you at all times is awesome. both are essential pets for any crafter

Perhaps, I just have trouble equating them with a Dread WH. They may be essential for a crafter, but I always felt that control slots were to limit the number and strength of critters you use to fight other critters, or, dare I say it, other players.

You can't ride two of them at once anyway.

You can always use a fire beetle and two pack llamas.
