For those who have the knowledge to do so, why not start a petition to be heard by those still playing UO and those who would play if Mythic Entertainment would simply listen to its player base by taking our ideas seriously and reinvesting some capital into making UO great again.

Its the only medieval like SIMs of our generation lacking the power of SIMs behind it. Why we still cannot build our own strongholds, armies, and towns out of anything we want makes no sense with the imagination and creativity the developers at Mythic Entertainment have within them.

The key to making this game successful is to put the power of UO into the hands of its players again. The more we can create, alter, design, and revise the better. Its about personalizing a life in a period where the age of mythology was at its climax. We need the archetypes of Heroes and Villains to live among us, to challenge the status quo and march on complacency.

Lets go out this Monday morning, log on to our computers, call our local brokerage firm, consult with our friends and family, ask how much it is to buy Mythic Entertainment stock. As of Friday it last traded for about $47.73 according to yahoo finance located here:

    http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=ERTS

We as players of this fantastic game can influence the fate of generations simply by paying a fee for 3 - 6 month account per share, and see a physical return as well as a virtual return on our investment. Together we can ban together as share holders, and attend stock holder meetings. We can make a difference. Stop complaining about the problem, and start doing something about it. Good Luck!

Please place a poll on this post for this question. Would you invest in UO's future and buy Electronic Arts Stock in Mythic Entertainment?

    A. I already own stock, and will continue to buy more EA stock.
    B. I already own stock, and am considering selling EA stock.
    C. I do not own stock, but I will buy EA stock as soon as possible.
    D. I do not own stock, but I would buy EA stock if I could afford to.
    E. I would never invest in EA stock whether I could afford to or not.

Look here's the problem with that. It comes across as whining.
They tried to work with UO by making it more graphics oriented when KR came out. The reception they received for this was cold to luke warm at best. Not good especially from the veteran players which are the base of their income for the game. Still they intend to make Stygian Abyss in KR format. This will either resurrect UO or condemn it.

I know you want the game to be updated and improved but seriously whining solves nothing in fact it can become counter productive. While a petition might seem like a good idea It might just be the final straw for the game. You see there are other games EA could choose to work on ..ie Warhammer instead of UO. If all they ever hear from us is whining they may just throw in the towel concerning UO.

Now ultimately this is just a game. So do what you like.

No one here is asking for KR, I think trying to put lipstick on a pig will yeild no results whatsoever, well, unless you have a thing for pigs! I believe what Nails and many other players are asking for is interactive content that has consequences due to player actions.

KR will do nothing to improve this game. The veterans do not play UO for it's graphics and frankly it is a waste of EA/Mythics time and money. Give us more more content, plots, maybe even political situations.

Give those WoW people who are tired of the never ending grind a reason to return home. Where they can actually own a home! They need to reinforce and promote what makes UO unique.

Having played UO from its beginning, it seems to me they're doing that more earnestly lately than they have in years! And it seems to be working. I'm seeing more players on my shard, Legends, than have been there in a long time. If the new content isn't enough proof for anyone, their effort to finally fix bugs (some of them as old as UO) and crack down on exploiters and other cheaters should cause us to at least give the Devs and EA a break from the constant old complaint that they're not doing anything to improve UO.

If you understood the engine that drives (the workhorse original 2D) UO you'd know it's not compatible with SIM-like changes. They tried a more modern route with KR but, in my opinion and the overwhelming opinions of other players I've talke with, KR just won't cut it, it's too buggy. Too bad they gave up on the old 3D version, it had such great possibilities and could probably have been altered to offer more player flexibility, though still not anything like games such as The Sims, or other such simulation games.

But, honestly, a UO that was like The Sims, but still fully the wide-open UO players like me have been hooked on for a decade, would blow me away. :D It would be my ideal: the perfect blending of the greatest MMORPG and the greatest SIM game.

But even The Sims 2 barely gets you off your lot, there's no freedom to roam and explore, heck, you can't even go visit your neighbor. (Don't know about The Sims Online, but do know it was a flop.) The requirements to combine the total player designability options of The Sims (PC version) with the total wide-roaming freedom of UO would be a megalithic accomplishment... but when UO came out it was just that. For its time it was a miracle of programming, and it blasted all the other MORPGs that were around then to dust by comparison.

    Hmmm... something to think about.

UO is a tiny drop in the huge ocean that is EA. I'd be interested in investing directly in UO, but *all* of EA...? It seems that, in that instance, there would be no guarantee my money would be spent on UO. The share-price you quoted above ($47.73) isn't for Mythic Entertainment, it's for Electronic Arts (ERTS).

Just about every online anything I play is owned by EA... my UO IDs (for my two main accounts) and The Sims online forums ID, all established well before I started playing on Pogo, were *all* usurped by my primary Pogo online ID, because they're all EA properties and, apparently, Pogo is the brightest light of the three. Though I've tried, I've never been able to return autonomy to my UO or The Sims IDs. The reason I brought that up is to show how EA priorities could funnel any money from stocks into areas we, as UO players, would care nothing about.

So, before we seriously consider investing, how could we insure our money went to improving UO and not some other EA property?

    Be well - Pax

I dont get the KR hate , its miles better than the 2d client.. but hey ofc you cant cheat like pigs with it soooo.............

Ohh yeah and for the stock thing , if I could invest directly in UO or UO influence I might consider it , but my money would prob be used to make the next MADDEN 65446484 or what freaking ever , so no thx.........

So your saying with the KR client there would be no cheating???? Ever heard of WoW Glider, hmm, a cheat and they weren't even given the source code. Fortunately WoW has fundage to sue the wretches. EA/Mythic simply needs to stay on top of them.

I will have to agree that they do deserve credit for current events. The event in Magincia was the best since the invasion of Trinsic, in my opinion. I just hope they continue the trend and focus on what makes this game great and unique. Pretty graphics won't keep the players, if they want pretty, there are plenty of new games out there.

I too am frustrated by many things with EA, not the same as you but frustrated non-the-less.

It seems at EA dont respond to what we ask for etc etc, but you need to understaind that the magority of players dont actualy involve themselves in forums.

What game are you playing? It sure isn't the same one I'm logging into every day.
Because the game I log into has scripters around every corner, and page after page, every day of the week, doesn't get rid of them.

    Here's a test for you.
Go hang out in Shame, preferably the elder gazer booths. You'll find scripters there getting artifacts, probably hidden with a pet doing the work.
Page on them, and wait.. 72 hours generally, to get nothing but an email and identical bot responce. Nothing happens to the scripter.

Next, scout around until you find someone .. with 2 wild beetles in their house (won't say more or this will be deleted) or some other skill-gaining script.
Page on them and watch them vanish after just a few minutes.

So what is the deal? Why are some scripters kicked out immediately, while the script resource-gatherers and arti-farmers are ignored for weeks on end?
    $
The resource farmers don't effect EA in any way other than the subscription they pay.
The skill training scripts on the other hand, mean the player is getting a free skill-up without paying $20 for a token! *Blasphemy!*

    Seriously, try it for yourself.
I've only been back about 5-6 weeks now, and I've peeked in on the same scripters in the same places doing the same thing at all hours of every day every week. Paging on them has done nothing.

But 2 pages on skill-training scripts (that were directly interfereing with my legitimate skill training) got immediate results.

    - Yes, they made the big effort. They burned a few houses to get us to shut up about the scripters. At least this time they actually DID do it. The big mass banning thing a couple years ago turned out to be a hoax.

    Yep me too.

Fact is that UO needs new players - No new players - this game will go downhill till the end.

Fact is that 2D does NOT attract new players - never has - never will !

Fact is that KR in its current state is backfiring badly- it is NOT good enough.

Fact is that waiting around now and keeping UO in a state of suspended animation (Modern client far from finished, No answers to the playerbase on the whole etc etc) is very bad for the game.

I get the facts wrong? Sure thats why we have a steadily rising player-population.......

    Ea made 2 big mistakes:

Introducing a new client and not pulling it through.
Giving zero answers and just trying to keep the (remaining) playerbase happy with a few shallow events.

    1. You pissed off many vets who did not use 2D into quitting. (FACT I know of ! I myself have an inactive account now too)
    2. Because the client is only halffinished and there was NO ADVERTISMENT the amount of new players coming into UO and staying was minute..
    3. You are pissing off the remaining "2D playerbase" with your zero-information politics.

If there was an All-Time oscar for the worst introduction of a new client in a Mmorpg - It goes to EAMYTHIC for KR in UO........

Other games introduce new clients and it doesnt backfire that way....

    *shakes head*

  21. Salty Pete

    Salty Pete Guest

    I disagree.

UO 2D client and all could and would attract both new players and returning former players by embracing the old UO look and game play instead of running away from it.

First of all what puts new players off are things like broken game world economies and "vet" players being so far ahead that catching up or surpassing seems impossible without spending $ on RMT.

Also, inconsistancies in styles of game. They log into UO looking for the game they remember their friends talking about with all the PKing and PvP and instead find a game that is a generic/bad rip off of games like EQ without the levels. They see a confused mismatch of games.

Returning vets find shells of the game they loved and stick around for a while until they run out of achievements or find out that PvP is only for RMT buyers and full time power gamers.

To get new players and returning vets to stay they need to embrace the old game. Nostalgia works as a marketing tool for one and for another there just simply isn't a game on the market like the old UO. To make it really work they would need to release a couple of shards with an old UO style game on it and at the same time release a new box with an attractive nearly naked female character on the front and on the back show a fully involved PvP FFA between dozens of players.

For those of you worried that I am advocating the removal of your KR client, Trammel, shard or neon artifact of uberness you bought for $... I'm not. This would be something completely seperate. New shards in addition to what we already are stuck with now. It would give new players an even footing with vet players and a chance to create new communities. Plus, these players would see the existing shards and might possibly be tempted into playing on the new style game instead of quitting if they don't enjoy the old style FFA world.

  22. No, but the new generation of gamers do. Without graphics that are even somewhat on par with the current generation of games, the current generation of gamers won't look twice. New players, new revenue, longer lasting UO....

Yeah, a real waste of time and money to bring in more revenue to keep UO's doors open another 10 yrs until the next generation of gamers comes around.....:coco:

As I've said a few times recently, I'd settle right now for them actually listing UO as one of their games. If you look at their website you'd be led to think that DAOC and Warhammer are the only games they have to offer.

Back in the hands of players? I'm pretty sure that appeasing the player base is what led us down the slippery slope towards crappiness in the first place. Oh, that and the "vision" of Anthony "sunsword" Castro who turned our once beloved UO into a cheap Diablo clone before moving on to other things.

The only thing that is going to fix UO is to scrap it and start over. Utilize all that wonderful fiction that Lord British created and make a new UO that still has an overhead view, all the housing options but has a new engine that can put a squash on the exploits we now have (and have had for years). Someone mentioned lipstick on a pig, an apt description of KR. Or you can continue to cling to this (in gaming terms) antique engine and all of the security holes and exploits it gleefully provides those with the know-how and moral flexibility to utilize.

Reading between the lines of what was said (and not said) at the Town Hall, the dupes are more lately based on x-ferring between shards than client-specific.

Of course that's just another reason why X-sharding should NOT allow items if it is to continue to exist IMO.

  32. X-Sharding needs to be removed from the game completely. It's done nothing but hurt the game. What they need to do is have a paid service provided by EA in which EA controls the movement of a character and all items belonging to it, and not have it tied to transfer tokens that will continue to be abused.

Here's one of the things I keep thinking people forget about....

UO both KR and 2D are more difficult to work with than many of the newer games simply because of it's age. You've got 10 years of server side coding to deal with, much of which was written by many different people. I think before any really ground breaking changes can be made to UO the Server Side coding needs to be completely updated, cleaned up, and made easier to work with. The Languages used 10 years ago while still viable for a game, also have more limitations than modern languages or updated versions of the same language.

Some of us just like the crisp detail, clear landscapes without that faded watercolor look, the ease of making a macro, the old UI, the ability to set something on the floor, etc etc.

Not everyone who likes 2d is a cheater/hacker/duper. So go sell that pig somewhere else.

If you think KR is "faded watercolor" you need to either check your monitor or video card settings. It's crisp, vibrant and clear on my system.

On my DVI-enabled video card with a new 21" LCD monitor and a relatively high brightness/contrast setting, looking at KR after playing 2D is like turning off the lights. Sure, the graphics aren't pixellated in KR... because they look like they were colored in marker and then hosed down! Nothing is as vibrant. The artwork in some cases is more realistic (like with the colored flowers, which is something I wish they'd spend 10 minutes fixing the artwork on in 2D... is it really that hard to recolor a few pixels?), but mostly it just looks messy and very heavy after the bright, thin lines of 2D.

It's not only my playing experience between clients - I've also seen screenshots from others of KR right next to their 2D equivalent (look at the homes and castles subforum!) and it's quite obvious that the colors in KR are muted and run together. A great example is those really bright sandstone wall and floor tiles that are almost orange in 2D. I like them that bright! In KR they look more like brown-grey brick and blend in with the WHITE (which coincidentally also look more grey in KR) plaster walls.

Both clients have their bugs and I know some people love the new KR graphics but I actually get headaches running through KR and trying to locate various landmarks, etc that I am used to picking out in 2D. I'd rather stick with the supposed "hacker favored" client than force myself to play KR just to avoid being called a cheater. :talktothehand:

I'm just going to disagree with you, I LIKE the way sandstone looks in KR. MUCH more natural of a "sand" color than in 2d. Yeah there are some house tiles in KR that aren't quite as good (like the green marble), but many more that are MUCH better (like the light wood floor that was added with SA... better color and grainwork, as well with a couple of the brick types).

BTW, you do know there is a setting in KR to make your house use the same tiles 2d uses, right?

As for not finding landmarks, it's becauset he overall level of detail is INCREASED and since you're used to more basic level detail of 2d, it takes a reasonable amount of time before things start looking "right", but when they do, you see that the detail is quite distinct. Case in point, go to heartwood in KR. It make take you a minute, but you will begin to see that the area outside of where you can walk is actually WAAAAY above the treelines and that you are looking down on tops of trees through clouds.

I can go on and on, but really you have to give your mind time to adjust to the new look. You've been seeing things one way for up to almost 11 years, it will take time to adjust to seeing it with new graphics.

Plus, the graphics in KR have sharpened CONSIDERABLY from where they were a year ago.

GeForce 7950GT 512 Meg PCI Express x16 video card through DVI to a 22in Samsung widescreen for me and KR is crisp, clear and vibrant. It just isn't nearly as neon as 2d.

I already own a decent sized piece of EA stock; have for years now. You need a TON of stock in order to even have a voice in a large publically traded company. Even if everyone on Stratics bought a few shares it would not be much in the grand scheme of things.

Unless UO can provide something that other mmorpgs don't have it will not attract new players, no matter what client.

In terms of Pve and customer service UO is not able to compete with WOW or EQ2.

In terms of PvP games like counter strike, Fury and some free to play games beat UO easily.

For housing UO gets the demographic gaming companies do not really want with about 30s.

I terms of game events and updates UO is as mediocre as most other games, but still lacks their advantages.

So why would any new player pick a 'buggy and from mostplayers confirmed 'hacked' game when there are newer ones, less buggy and cost the same?

    Is UO unique?
Seemingly not unique enough to attract players and unless EA plays on the games strengths it never will be.

    y thx u sir

Also: What the hell happened to this thread? It turned into a giant war over, well...over everything except the original topic.

I hereby declare this thread a failure.

  43. I'd like to see anything you've seen in writing from EA in the last year that says SA is only going to be in KR format.

Otherwise I'm going to assume by the less than 5% KR adoption rate (educated guess, EA feel free to correct me) that isn't true.

I'm also assuming that its taken so long to introduce SA because they're rewriting it to work with 2D.

Since they haven't said anything about SA since they stated that they were delaying it, the last official statement is that SA is a KR-based expansion and that you will need KR to go to the new areas.

Until YOU can provide proof to the contrary (and not assumptions), that is the official word until a new official word is given.

So let's see some proof that they are retroing SA into 2d.

Not exactly good to demand facts and then drop a load of arbitrary information and assumptive reasoning right afterwards.

  45. I'm the one that personally stopped KR from going mainstream, I'm the one that delayed SA from coming out on time, so all that SA content is not there for you to enjoy. I'm the one that is holding UO back. Who am I? I am the voice of the majority. EA will design around my tastes or crash and burn, and that is all there is to it.

I want exploits to be taken seriously, bugs fixed, economy and PvP balanced, new content that doesn't stall for 6 months, dupes deleted, massive unattended farming ended. Do that and I might be more forgiving of the time and resources wasted on a huge graphical lag beast of unplayability for the minority to enjoy.

I personally say that SA will be played in 2D, therefore it will be. All you can do is try to convince me that I'm wrong and to change my mind, but after a year my mind hasn't been changed. EA isn't going to cater to a 5% minority, I'm sorry thats just all there is to it.

The voice of the majority has spoken EA, make it so.

  48. No, it's not. I still can't even go up my ladder to the second story of my house in KR.

Aside from the outright bugs, performance is horrid. I have way above the specs and it still stutters something awful.

I hate the UI. I don't understand why they did that to the perfectly good UI of the 2D client. I don't mind UI options, but what they should have done was copy the 2D UI almost exactly and then made things like hotbars or the funky container styles...what they did by going backwards was alienate the existing player base that had no intention of learning a brand new UI. Now they are stuck trying to get the old 2D UI back in there bit by bit.

And the graphics are really mind boggling. A handful are actually good, but most just...well, words don't really explain it. The worst is how fuzzy and indistinct it all looks. I can go in a house that I've been in and out of for literally years in the 2D client and can't figure out what I'm looking at. The option to bring the legacy tile art into KR is, like the UI repair work, an admission that they goofed. But it was too little too late, they already turned a lot of the vets off of KR for good.

And probably the worst part of KR, and why a lot of people really do despise it, was that they changed how ground terrain was handled by changing to large scale tiles, and in the process seriously screwed up the game world. There's still places you just can't get to anymore because suddenly there's a wall there now where there didn't used to be. And for that stuff, it's broken in 2D and KR both, so you can't escape it. It's pretty frustrating.

It's a shame. The basic idea behind KR was good...but like so many things that come out of EA, they managed to take a good idea and screw it up so bad in the implementation that it just wasn't worth it.

It's possible KR can become a good client...in four or five years at this rate. Performance has GOT to get better. The graphics...well...honestly I'm afraid they are an almost complete wash. They need to redo so many of them that it would almost be starting from scratch yet again. And the UI needs serious work as well. Someday maybe they'll get it right.

KR and Third Dawn sure makes one appreciate the original dev team a lot more.
