I looked at the game options to disable running (i.e. only allow walking, no matter what).

This, to prevent accidental running while stealthing.

There is a check box to disable pathfinding but what about an "only walk" option ?

Just keep the cursor closer to your character...

    Yes, but accidents can happen....

I was looking at a way to just prevent an unwanted accident to happen.....

Simply keeping the cursor close sometimes cannot prevent an accidental faster dragging and so running.

An Option to simply disable running would be quite better.

Been trying to figure out how to do this myself. I wish there was a way to toggle run on and off with a key press lol. Using WASD to move gives me run only and I have to use the mouse to stealth.

Wouldn't work for me really, I am purely WASD now days. For UO I use this to play anyways lol.

Which is designed for WASD play.

  7. This is what happens when you actually play a character long enough. You learn how to play it.

I know, it sounds absurd, but I'm serious. You should give it a try, it's awesome, really.

Connor hit it. I've played stealthers for years and in that time, I can only think of maybe 5 times I "ran" and became unhidden. Usually stealth with catch a few run steps as it is.

Learn your character and learn you computer hardware. Changing mice does tend to screw some people up.:danceb:

Many of the arguments against an "always walk" could be turned around to the "always run" option.
While I can only remember a couple of times I've run accidentally, so I don't really care for the option myself. But I've always wondered why the option doesn't go both ways.

But why leave it to "chance" when instead a simple disabling of the running feature under the Options would deal with it 100% safely ??

When players want to walk they disable running, when they want to also run they re-enable it.

    Sounds much safer to me........

Many of my characters with stealthing do not have ninjitsu skill. (They're faction thieves maxed out on other skills like tracking, detecting, removing traps, stealing, lockpicking, and magery.) As a result, I've had to become used to walking them everywhere and they do not have the luxury of using smoke bombs. Play that kind of character long enough and you very seldom find yourself running when you should stay stealthed. And when I find myself going too fast or getting sloppy and inadvertently running, it's a great reminder to SLOW DOWN and be more cautious.

I would NEVER use an option to always walk with those characters because if they are revealed, it's critical that they be able to run and try to make a getaway, even though they're fully visible. Most of the time, they get clobbered anyway if they're up against another player. However, against a monster, they stand a good chance of getting far enough away to hide or cast inviz spell. That chance would be eliminated if they could only get away at walking speed.

Just get the devs to give him this option as a bonus for being 6x120 whatever skills. Eventually having to find a healers because he could not run away after being revealed he will learn keeping the mouse cursor closer to his character is the better option. Not sure but it may also help him play the character

<sarcasm>How about we add in a button that makes it so you take no damage from anything? Sounds much safer to me. </end sarcasm>

There is very minimal chance of it happening if you LEARN how to play your character stealthing with your computer hardware. Oh wait, you are the guy posting about everything being wrong if it isn't handed to you on a silver platter with no effort on your part.

I've played a stealther in soo many different forms that I've learned smoke bombs aren't always the best option.

I've be disappointed in the devs if they considered adding anything like this cripple code for the five people who can't figure out how to use their chars. Might as well add in a "are you sure you want to push through this char" gump:coco:

Well, an option is, aheam............, an "option"..........

Meaning, that those players who want to disable running for safer stealthing can, and those players who do not want to disable it for the reasons you give, for example, can leave it in place.

It would be, after all, an "option" selectable at free will....

So, why not have it this option for those players who may put it to a good use for their gaming time since it would not harm other players not wanting it ?

So may I ask WHY we have a NUMBER of other options possible ?

I mean, that same argument could be well used for pathfinding also, for example.

Yet, we DO have an "option" to disable pathfinding as well as other things.

I see no reason why players cannot also have an "option", not a forced feature, mind you, that allows players to decide which way they prefer to go.......

Because development hours are a long long way from infinite. For a feature to be added, it should met the test of 'likely used by a significant portion of the playerbase".

I hope this answers the very last of your queries on this subject because

    :bdh:

Lets let them try to whip SA and the new SA client into a somewhat polished offering before we go chasing minor features....

As one of the best stealthers ever; I would like to say not running is a skill.

Popps, I truly doubt that anyone who seriously wants to learn how to stealth and stay alive would ever use the option. Anyone who uses it as a crutch to kick start their training in stealthing is, in my opinion, putting themselves at a serious disadvantage for later when they get into a situation where they need to run and now have to open a gump, find the correct tab, and then locate the right box to toggle on or off.

You are, in my opinion, asking for a truly unnecessary feature to be programmed for a very small minority of the players in a time when the developers are working late nights even on weekends to finish coding, testing, and polishing the next expansion.

It's fine and dandy to come up with neat features and "options," Popps. However, I often wonder if you understand the number of people on the UO development/programming/engineering teams in today's troubled economic times and just what kind of workload they have at the moment.

If you really want to make yourself useful since your return to UO, download the SA client, read everything (and I do mean EVERYTHING) that is posted in the SA client beta forum, check out the SA client info on Miss Echo's website at www.spellweave.com, and then give yourself two weeks to absorb the information and figure out how to set up the SA client for one of your favorite characters. Then start using it for the things you do daily with that character and learn what it can and can't do. At that point, make yourself useful and provide your feedback about the client in the SA client beta forum.

If you insist on just playing as you normally do and continuing to nitpick and post about every little thing that makes you get the smallest twitch while you play, you will continue to get the reactions that you get now when you post. You've succeeded in turning yourself into everyone's favorite person to bash. Perhaps you enjoy that role and I won't succeed in convincing you to take on a different role. But do give it some consideration, please. You just might surprise yourself and find out that being helpful is far more satisfying than just being annoying.

But but but but when the Devs give him this option as a bonus for being 6x 120 whatever skills he will automatically have another thing to complain about.Quiet now Tina!!!!

popps, you are probably the only person who would use this option.

This is why it will never become an option.

What about typing by accident? That will reveal you if stealthed. Or casting spells? Can we get an option to disable those things too?

    just kidding.

But yeah I think overall if there was an option to "always walk" it would be dangerous because if you are revealed, you usually need to run -- fast!!

Ah... the joyous pathfinding option. The pathfinding code is buggy beyond belief and their is a HUGE chance of accidentally double clicking a spot. Then once you are in pathfinding, you are SOL on getting control back of your tune. So, yes, that junk needs to have an option to remove.

Now let us go to the chance of accidentally running while stealthed. 99.99999% of all stealther will and more than a few HAVE told you it is a once a year issue after hundreds of hours of playing in stealth.

Plus, even if you accidentally run while stealthing, the stealth skill will often catch you if you stop running after a few steps. In fact, some stealthers are good enough to take advantage of this feature. RUN-WALK-RUN-WALK and never get revealed.

As people are pointing out... more than once. YOU have an issue with stealth and want your own personal modification to fix YOUR issue. Maybe if you took time to fix YOURSELF, you'd have no issues with stealth... ie: LEARN to play your template and with your equipment.
