Gamingstyle you just don't get?

    Heya,

Last night I got rezkilled at Jhelom moongate with my red factioneer. It's the same guy who keeps camping the moongates.

This got me thinking, this is one of the gamestyles I just don't get, I can't see any fun in it. Putting people who have just ressed, naked, to 20 min loss with 1 shot. This guy is stealther with spirit speak (Atleast I'm pretty sure he has spirit speak), char made just for rezkilling people. You sit, keep checking moongates, you see a ghost, wait he/she takes a rez and you shoot once and it's over. At the moment no-one cares about points so... It has to give some other kind of satisfaction, maybe enjoying the fact that someone might be frustrated cause of 20min loss for rezkill? I dunno.

What are the gamingstyles some other people obviously enjoy but you just don't get it, you just don't see any fun in it?

I smile most when I've made someone else smile. If you've ever watched a programme called 'Holmes on Homes' you'll know what I mean. He gets a real 'buzz' from knowing he's made the home owner happy. I therefore totally do not understand the people who smile when they've made someone miserable or angry.

I gave up trying to understand pyschoses in this game about 10 years ago. If you call people out on it, they continually argue it's a game and that you should just get over it. Conveniently ignoring the fact that such behaviours are always one-sided "fun" and something frowned upon by normal people.

But perhaps they had their milk stolen in school and just have no other outlet for their teenage angst rages.

Rezkilling, scamming (not to be confused with honest thievery), and... rares collecting.

    Re:

What I do understand but cannot respect is the "Flavour Of The Week(or Month)" game-style. If one particular template, item or whatever else, becomes over-powered, certain players will slap on their character the appropriate skills or items and head out to collect insurance.

What I cannot respect in particular is that such players are not "tied" to their characters at all and have no personal preferences(often, no personal skill either). You could argue they do not really even have a game-style or "game personality".

I am not a role-player in Ultima Online(though I have nothing against that) myself but dumbing it down to using the FOTW and collecting insurance.. :gee:

But hey, whatever makes them feel they get their money's worth, right? Can't really criticise. They may consider me a fool for the way I play too.

What the people that enjoy rezkilling or any other form of griefing seem to forget...what they share multiplies and what they withhold diminishes.

They wonder why there are fewer and fewer people to gain their perverse thrill from.

Hmmmm...they may need to ponder that for a while, I suppose.

  10. I agree wholeheartedly with Petra Fyde. Love that show - and I love UO. Thinking you caused a smile - a happy frame of mind - for someone, is a blast. I've tried imagining "working at" making people miserable. It never computes in my mind.

I met a lovely class of people I didn't get when I was collecting easter baskets on Great Lakes. Two of them were camped at the Basket giver in Felucca killing people, I turn up as a total noobie character, I had even spent my 1000gp :D and they kill me, Heal me, then kill me. I say to them they are wasting their time I have nothing on me but yet they did it. *grins*

I can understand PvP, It shows you can kill, Kill someone at your class, Killing a noobie with no items on them is just pointless, And for the record, I never ever gave them a count.

There is no "rule" that says someone should sit and rez-kill anyone ... esp when it gains them nothing, really. it's a shoddy behavior.

A righteous kill is good, but rez-killing is just dumb. Then again if the ghostie knows the bloke is there and they die, why do they go back to the area before they are healed up? <shrug>

People who don't understand that a rez kill can be a "rightous" kill to others...la

  16. - People who play games only to make other people not want to play them. This was always one of my major gripes about old school UO. Griefers, especially the ones that say things to people that you can't even hear on cable TV, were a playstyle I could never wrap my tiny little mind around.

    - Horders. People that believe they need every single thing in every single game they play. If someone else gets anything they don't get, they get all upset.

    - Cheaters. What is the point of playing a game that you aren't even playing? This one relates less to UO than to FPS games I play. If you are going to sit and watch your bot play...why bother?

Ahhh, cmon you guys, steel yourselves. And welcome to the internet, lol.

I don't rez kill, but it's something that just comes with the game. Griefing used to be a lot worse! (Anyone remember the terrible things that went down at terathan keep when the warriors were dropping power and vanq weps?)

I don't get red chars who kill my miner or my lumberjack, I just figure it as the price of getting double resources. If your red and in factions then you have killed at least 5 blue chars and have access to faction artifacts, and do/raid fel champs for powerscrolls, getting rez killed is the price you pay.

I used to hunt script miners in fel, i also used to kill miners and lumberjacks, to get their resources as i hated the drag of mining. I'm pretty sure that is just soemthing that carried over.

Someone mentioned role-play. If they are playing a red "murderer", then...umm...they are killing people and taking their stuff. What more role-play could you want!

    Playstyle i don't understand:

    The big talking coward.

The guy who just talks mad trash about how great he is, but then refuses to attempt to prove it. Then you just come to find out they are a smoke bombing stealther who will cower as soon as you do some dmg.

Also with this play style i don't get:

The "It Took How Many of You to Kill Me?!?!" Guy

Seriously? you are going to brag that it took 4 people to kill you...when all you did was run, and in some cases hide? Its not like you stood and fought, 4v1 and took out several opponents before u were gunned down in your valiant efforts.... you ran and ran and ran until someone out flanked you, put you on foot, and you got railed. (Also most likely the people that come to the board and say DISMOUNT IS OVER POWERED AND PEOPLE ARE QUITTING BECAUSE THEY GOT DISMOUNTED AND DIEDOMGOMGOMG)

Also, if you wanted a 1v1, go play mortal ****ing combat. its a mmorpg...

BEFORE THIS THREAD GETS ON WRONG RAIL

This was not about arguing if that my price for being red/factioneer. This was not about if griefing belongs to the game or how to deal with it.

This was just about gamingstyles you don't get. For example I would never enjoy playing spirit speak stealther rezkilling ppl who have just rezzed up. I just don't think it's fun. Some people enjoy that others get pissed/something for getting RK:d. I don't.

But I'm not here to say that no one should ever do it, I'm just saying I fail to see the fun in it.

So drop the argues if griefing is right or wrong, if rezkilling is right or wrong. This thread was matter of *which gamingstyle would never suit someone*. Obviously the same gamingstyle suits someone else, this everyone here knows.

Fine have it your way :(

I don't understand how people can farm monsters for hours, days, weeks, and months to get an item. This is seriously some how fun? fighting a brainless monster for 100s of hours, witht he hope of gettin an item that you could probably have made enough gold by now to buy 40 of them. You grind and grind and grind for this item, if you would have just devoted these 100s of hours to something else, you would be a billionaire, you could be skilled in something .... cmon now. i don't get it.

Hmm, think the playstyle I just never "get" is the must have power NOW, must buy my way to the top and get everything instantly. Especially the tamer flavour ones, who add buying uber pre-trained pets, suits and such to the list, or honour tame then park pets at spawns to "train" them. Just seems like you're skimming the surface of the game to "win UO" that way, without actually experiencing any of it. With a powergamed ego in a lot of cases lol. I *know* some folks don't want to work for things, don't have time or it's their eighth tamer etc, etc; but I'll never understand how they can find it enjoyable, or what they do for "fun" past the first couple of weeks lol.

I find template of the week players mildly frustrating, but more if they're constantly asking other players if their template whim is good. Then next week it's "how about this one?" And then after helpful folks spend time offering advice, the player does something totally different anyways :D

Griefers generally don't bother me, but I do get frustrated when they upset others and get the attention they want.

Sometimes I don't understand my own gameplay, lol. For example, I have killed at least 300 renowned in the Abyss and never got I arti drop. I'm getting paranoid and obsessed. I don't like it, but here I am day after day just waiting for the first drop.

There are 100's of play styles in UO.. just like there are 100's of different template combinations....

but truly the ones I do NOT nor will NEVER understand are:

    Griefers,

    Scammers,

    Hackers,

Rez-killers (I don't know here the idea of Oooh... you rez killed somone..... aren't you skilled and talented.... it's like OMG wow does that take l33t skillz or what? I don't get it.)

Those who feel the need to harass other players about their play style... ie... harassing role-players... Or giving people a hard time for being a Banksitter...

I don't harass the Rez-killer..... usually I avoid them... But I don't harass them.... if that's what they want to waste their 12.99 every month doing then far be it from me to stop them...

However Hackers, Scammers and Cheaters.... I'll page on you..... you can bet on that... These sorts RUIN the game for more people than any others... and if I catch someone greifing.... you can bet I'll page on that too.

It's those types I'm MORE than happy to have removed from the game....

Now... as for those who afk script skills.... now... if you want to get to the top that bad it's a shame... in my opinion your sense of connection to your characters are built up over time using them..... they grow with your skills as you play.... those who cheat to get their skills up I find are often the ones who get bored with UO the fastest... couldn't rp their way out of a wet paper bag.... and generally do NOT care about anyone or anything in the game... Often are highly greedy... and complain a lot.

It's like those who only show up to EM events to "get stuff" and act like the EM's somehow "cheated" them if they don't get something... And the worst part of it... most of them just sell the things anyway.... like they don't already have more gold in game then they need or could possibly spend... But then again I suppose that's their play style whether or not I agree with it or think it's "fun"... it's what they enjoy....

I often times wonder if some people don't just enjoy being frustrated and ticked off... you know? They are always doing things that end up making them terribly upset.... and refuse to try anything else.... interesting isn't it?

Oh well to each his own I guess.

Don't touch the third rail!!! Oky doky.

I don't understand rez killer types at all -if- the person getting killed has just played and fought without any stupid trash talk or otherwise been a jerk about the experience. Having had a crafter at a town bank (the zones were down and I didn't realize it) that a TBer just decided to rez kill over and over, not to mention my horse with very little in it, I guess I just didn't understand what the "fun" was from his side, especially when I only came back to ensure I got my items off my corpse (some tools I needed and a favorite hatchet, amongst some of the stuff I had just gathered.) He got four counts out of it, just didn't make any sense to me from his end.

I also find those that "camp" particular spawns and kill them over and over kinda... well, boring people. If I'm out and about I like to keep moving unless I'm there for something in particular, but even then I tend to stop after a dozen or so because I get bored. But to each their own I guess.

I don't fully understand people that build "boxes" for housing. Why have anything on the plot at all if you're just going to have a box? Very lazy and in most cases very unattractive. The psychedelic mash ones are the worst *shiver*.

People that go to EM events (and general plotline events) and spam constantly about whatever, don't actually listen to the EM, immediately gank whatever monsters that appear without giving others a shot at them, or that get mad they didn't get their little toy for being a good boy and showing up. Honestly, is your life that shallow?

Roleplayers that "overdo" it a bit. Or a lot. Especially ones that build up an entire persona and storyline that makes them THE most important person IN. THE. WORLDS. Or worse, they come up with some sob story about how little they have... knowing that with a bit of work you can have almost anything in the game you actually want. They were Lord British's illegitimate son, brought up by slavers and so... ok, glazing over....

Umm.... those that script. Don't understand it at all. I understand using macros to do repetitive stuff, but anything more and it just makes no sense to me. Why play the game if you... don't want to play the game?

Those that insist on the top-end items to use on their character. I have only one or two artifacts I've EVER received, I keep those because I'm proud to have gotten them. Otherwise, I build my suits for basic properties and then just go enjoy myself, not spend weeks building up enough money so I can have that perfect suit to go fight what-may-have-yous. But, I came from the times when having a good light archer suit and a vanquishing bow were pretty good things.

    Gimly?

He just got me too, its for the points! He thinks that if he has 6 million points that makes him a great PvPer. He told me so when i asked him, what sort of kick he gets out of it. He said that if he was at the top of the faction board people would take him serous.

Funny thing was I told my guild mates he was camping Jeholm gate so one went to Brit gate fro a res, guess what? His team mate Guy was at Brit res killing… go figure!

Just a thought on the rez killers. Not saying it's a playstyle I enjoy or completely understand but I have a couple of old buddies that took quite a bit of pleasure from it. I asked them about it one day while repairing their gear and got a semi-understandable answer.

This is not an exact quote but close as I can remember it.
"if they can't handle a bit of repeated dirt naps...they shouldn't be in fel. We are thinning the herd of the whiners that ruin fel. If 5 or 6 deaths makes them so upset that they don't come back...our job is complete. and if they regroup, change their panties and make a rush at us, they earned it...we'll still kill them again, but at least they are doing something other than complaining about it."

Personally the only playstyle that really stumped me is the perma-banksitter. Not buying or selling...not really doing anything besides sitting there and letting the world see them there. I'm sure it has it's appeal to a certain type of person, but for the money I'd pay every month, I'm positive there is something productive I could be doing. I spent alot of time at the banks but usually to accomplish something. Just never really got it.

To be honest I don't get Factions period. The entire system is flawed, mainly because the various parts are broken. PvP in general, more due to player attitude than anything (Which a revamp can't fix), cheats, bugs, etc destroy the foundation Factions is built on. Sigil stealing has largely become something someone does by swapping a skill out for the run, not something you do as part of your contributions it's an after thought on a lot shards besides town control really doesn't matter you can get pretty much what ever you want at Yew Gate. PvP is still imbalanced, thanks to skill jewelry suped up hybrid templates are the name of the game. Tamer/Archers using Jewlery/Item sets to keep both maxed out depending on situation...swap out as needed. I can't imagine having "fun" with something so broken.... And honestly the only thing I'm afraid of is if they go to fix those they'll screw up PvM in doing so.

I don't understand anyone (new player or vet) who thinks they're entitiled to everything, and thinks anyone who disagrees with them is arrogant or selfish. Hmmm
