[Gardening] Resource gathering plants (please make seeds stack)

Discussion in 'UHall' started by OxAO, Jan 18, 2009.

Before this last publish which changed plants I was able to store 8 seeds in one plant(lock down) now I need to dedicate a whole bag 125 lock downs for just seeds

I grow them in large bulk when I need to restock specifically orange pedal plants.
I used to grow about 200 plants at a time I see that will be a lot more difficult now.

Please make seeds that we need in large bulk stackable.

BTW- thank you for making cooking products stackable. I just noticed that today.

    Thanks
    Ox

Do you mean that plants were changed so that seeds and resources on them count as seperate items when the plant holding them is in a container? Or is it somethin else?

    yes

I was leaving the seeds on the plant and left them in a box, they would not grow in a box. This was my storage for seeds.

I remember Jeremy talking about this at one of the Town Halls I attended. She said that the stacking of seeds would be difficult because they are more like a BOD deed than a regular resource. Thus implementing a means of improved storage would require implementing something like a BOD book rather than just having them stack.

that would mean the old system was better when you could keep the seeds on the plant.

    Thanks

I'm not following. I'm still storing seeds on my plants that are in secure containers and not having any problems with it. What's going on?

It still works as it always has with the old plants - it's just that aside from the cocoa trees, the new plants don't produce seeds.

This problem could be easily fixed IMHO... I mean come on! They implemented a new Vet Reward (Commodity Deed Box) that is way more complex, again IMHO, than stacking seeds. They could have instead made the Vet Reward something that nearly every Gardener would die to have, a Seed Table! It could have been pretty simple to implement, mimic the way BOD books work in sorting abilities etc, and make a Table Graphic to represent the new item! Anyone ever remember anyone asking "Hey Devs! Make us a Commodity Deed Box!" <insert sarcasm>

I really don't understand the rationale of the Devs when they do silly things like this :rant2:

One thing that made it a little more complex was that seeds can frequently be "Unidentified"... "A Red Seed" even though the game knows what it grows into...

Now, thanks to Sak, we have a way of Identifying all seeds so the next logical step would be to let us store all identified seeds (or 500 of them) in a seed box...

We know that the Devs know Gardners want this, it's a matter of when they can prioritize it. Honestly, the last 6 months have been the biggest boon for gardening since plants started growing in UO so we can't really stomp our feet as gardeners and say "Give us more, NOW!!!"... but we can hope that seed storage will come some time soon. :)

Oh I agree! I am not trying to "stomp my feet asking for more". Merely pointing out that this situation could have been a better alternative to the Commodity Box we got as a new reward option. It seems like every time someone asks for a little attention to their trade, the Devs go off on some tangent of their own and create stuff that to the best of my knowledge nobody has asked or in the case of seeds, petitioned for at one point or another.

I am actually a proponent for less "gimme gimme" and more of the old style UO. But is it not strange that the Devs behave in this matter? Personally though, I would rather get no more Vet rewards, in fact would willingly give them up, if the Devs could fix all the exploits and everything messing up this game currently. Heck that would be THE BEST vet reward I have gotten in the 83+months I have played this game!

To be fair, people have long been asking for a way to create/redeem commodity deeds in houses ... and it likely affects more people than gardening.

Really? Well I have been away for about a year... but I have probably 75k+ of each reagent including the new necro regs and I have never seen the need for one. I usually keep 1 pile each type in the amount of 10k in my Home, have 2 or 3 "25 each reg Emergency Bags" in my bank and the rest are deeded until needed in increments of 10k. Simply take a trip or 2 and 10 minutes max to refill my undeeded regs as needed to resupply the house stock. But the Seeds, that's a ton of storage wasted even at 8 seeds per plant in your secures.

And with the new ability to identify seeds using the Poppies Dust or whatever its called (yep I am learning the new stuff just now) it would seem that the identified seeds could be sortable and unidentified you cannot. This would also give gardeners a larger market in poppy dust sales and compliment the system quite well since the dust will be needed for the purpose of said "Seed Table". Just some food for thought... I do enjoy a good friendly and open debate! After all, that's how the greatest ideas get drawn up! :D

The only references I can find are to the town hall right before it came out, but I do remember a number of threads on the pre- Age-of-Smilies [ :) ] stratics begging for them.

(but I've gotta say, the gardeners are giving the PvP thieves a run for their money when it comes to hard-core playstyle advocacy)

ElvishArcher, are you a computer programmer?

People having issues moving Wood and Ingots etc... it was asked for as soon as Commodity Deeds existed... Well actually people asked for access to their Bank Boxes at home... but Deed use was soon after. :)

Actually... not a programmer. I did do a ton of Database Admin and Design work in my past before I joined the Military though, so I am semi familiar with that end of the spectrum.

And let me ask why you ask? I am not trying to be hostile in any way at all, only discussing things in a professional manner. To ask someone "are you a computer programmer" 99% the time in the manner of usage you just did could be construed as being hostile. If that's what your attempt is... bug off and troll somewhere else. If I misinterpreted your question, I apologize in advance for my above statements.

Actually, I was curious if you knew how the data was handled for different items. Is it a records of a sort, with most items having fields for the graphic that is used, the quantity (for stackable commodities)? For a seed, I imagine it would be a record with a few additional fields as to whether it was identified or not, the color of the plant/seed, and the type of plant it produces. Then there is the added complexity of mutant plants. Is this determined at the seed level or only when the plant sprouts?

The developers have said at some point (I don't remember when) that when the seed (item) is created, it knows what it's going to be, if if we don't... so if we see a "Red Seed", the server sees "a Red Rushes seed" or whatever...

The moment you cross plant A's pollen onto plant B, the game knows what color and plant type plant B's seeds will be. You can see the color on the gump but the plant type won't be visible until you use Poppy dust to ID it.

Basically as soon as an item exists or is generated in game, everything about the item is known to the game... some of it may be hidden from the players.

What of those mutant black or white plants I see? Are those mutants at the seed level or is it a batch of seeds which all produce mutant plants?

Glad to see I was incorrect about you sablestorm! Been a long shift for me at my Duty Station and I am getting tired, so again sorry about my assumptions.

Now... I couldn't tell you offhand about the info you desire with my limited actual programming skills... but can tell you that each seed, at least in database terms, could be assigned an item id. Said ID would be numerical (not seen in uo, just an internal ID#) that said Seed Table could identify. If it recognizes the ID as an identified seed, or Legacy type seed that needs not "identifying with poppy dust", then it stores that seed in said Seed Table. This would work if each seed type had a shared ID# to match what the Table recognizes:

Normal ferns for example could be coded with the name: Fern_00_01

Ferns(file reference name)_00(represents normal type, 01,02,03 etc could signify the other colors)_01(this could be a special code to identify it as a nonresource producer, 01 or being 02 as a resource producer, for being able to sort through resource vs. nonresource plants when you use a "sort Function" in the Table, again very similar to how BOD books are now)

    So for examples:
Ferns_00_01 could represent: Fern, Normal Green, Nonresource Producer
Ferns_01_01 could represent: Fern, Bright Green, Nonresource Producer

Snake_00_01 could represent: Snake Plant, Normal Green, Nonresource Producer
Snake_01_02 could represent: Snake Plant, Bright Green, Resource Producer

Like I said though, I am NOT a programmer so I wouldn't know how it really would work in a UO environment, I just know that some of the Databases I have had to create in the past had WAY more variables involved than it appears to me here.

This discussion is better in the gardening forum... but to answer your question, Black and White plants of the ORIGINAL plants which have existed for about 6+ years are created through Cross-Polination. You take Pollen from Plant A and apply that Pollen to Plant B... the moment that is done you can look at the plant gump on Plant B and see if you got a Mutant (1% chance I believe) and if Mutant it's 50/50 Black or White. All plants that are cross pollenated (old set only) will generate 8 seeds eventually... so if you get a White or Black Mutant, you will get 8 seeds for that mutation.

With the NEW set of plants that were released this year, the Black and White seeds will be available through doing the Naturalists Quest including the 5th Solen Hive... There's currently an issue with distribution of some seeds so wait a while if you are wanting to get Black and White seeds of the new Plants.

See the Gardening FAQ for more info.

No worries Elvish. There's no tone in text, so it can be easily misinterpreted. What's more, things can get contentious here at U-Hall. :)

Why can't we have "Seed bags" in the same way that we have kegs for pots? with everything in that bag the same seed and once you put a seed in it it no other types can go into it?

  25. DHMagicMan_1

    DHMagicMan_1 Guest

    You'd still have 17 (Original Plant Set) x 9 (Original Colors + Mutants) = 153
    unique seed bags

    Plus

19 (Fragrant and Peculuar set) x 3 (Plain + Black and White) 57 (+ Fire Quad Cacti) 58 more unique seed bags

    Plus

    however many more for Bonsai...

That's still over 200 "Seed Bags" to keep track of and organized if they did it that way, as opposed to a "BoD" style that can take all types and sort/filter and drop whichever seed you click on.
