Will GM's take action against people who spam hate, racist, vulgar, etc... comments in General Chat?

Or is it up to the individual to "mute" them, or change channel?

Seems like it should be the abuser who is inconvenienced, and not the people who just want to communicate in General Chat.

If someone could point out some EA/Mythic references about Chat and Abuse I'd love to read through them.

If it's a racial comment expect a ban

Yes I can confirm they do ban for things said on general chat, I got a 48 hour ban not that long ago for using the term "Chat ****" :|

There are a few words that get you an insta-ban, I do not have the whole list. And depending on the number of infractions will change the length of time starting with 48 hours and eventually a perma-ban.

Yes, they do ban for racial and abusive language in general chat. You need the numbers beside the name as well as the char name, this lets them identify the account. It is sporadic at best though. I have seen one guy {very offensive name} get in gen and talk all kinds of racial stuff. Over a three week period he has been around about 10 times or so I would guess. He is yet to be perma-banned, and this is after more than 10 folks say they are reporting him each time. Yes he could be creating chars and deleting them but the numbers are supposed to be account specific, each time the guy gets on the numbers are the same *shrugs*

This is one that needs to fall by the wayside IMHO. A friend of mine got a 48 hour for getting off his mount and emoting "****s the still warm corpse" after killing a meer mage {I was there, saw him do it, saw the idiot say they were reporting him, and he forwarded the email of the ban}. Now if I tell you I am going to take that action against YOU, then fine maybe some action should be taken, yeah, maybe a bit harsh to ban for that but I can understand the logic behind it. Banning for using the word while being used in ANY context is WAY wrong imo.

Saves EA the time to check if it was in context and to decide what is and what not in context.

True, but what does it take ... a whole thirty seconds to check a chat log? Oh wait these are GM's we are talking about, I see your point

I disagree 100%. At the inception it reflects so much anger and hatred Im still mildly surprised at the ease of which this kind of behavior flows from peoples lips. *****s the still warm corpse* Point 1. ****. I think more than 50% of all women have at least 1 **** experience before they are 21 yrs old. Full blown ****? No. An impacting type of experience? Yep. Usually involves hate, violation and some degree of physical threat. Emotional trauma is involved every time in some degree. How cool is that? What fun! This wild crazy loose remark in the name edgy bad boy humor is completely out of place. A 2 day two ban might seem extreme to some but it honestly doesn't bother me. I can step back and laff a lil because hey, the Meer Mage is dead.
We don't have to worry about the problems being a **** survivor with him.
Point 2. Necrophilia. An old crowd favorite. Wild edgy bad boy loose comment.
It doesn't belong in uo IMO. If you want to go to a bar and drink some shots, pop some egg farts, hurl obscenities and perverse conversation.... Go for it! I don't wish to be confronted with the concept of **** or necrophilia in game. I know, my 2 cent opinion wont go far with many who read this......
More information than you need to know dept....I 'm a male career construction worker. I'm no prude. I'm not a bible thumper. Most of us onsite are fairly proud of our ability to spout obscene and perverse behavior. Can we keep it out uo please? I feel like people have to navigate humanities lower nature enough out of game already. Flame away! Ciao....for now

Putting people on ignore, leaving chat and leaving the area are not the answers for abusive conduct, reguardless of what EA/Mythic sad policy is.

    Period.

Yeah, God forbid someone want to RP someone truley evil. I mean hell this is a touchy feely, politically correct society these days. May as well ban folks for using words someone else finds obscene, offensive or wrong. Oh wait, people can find something wrong with almost any word out there. Instead of them moving away from the situation they find offensive, let's just eliminate a playstyle. *insert sarcasm here* It is much better to ban or censor something than it is for people to use their own freedom to not be around something they find offensive.

Just say for example someone says "I am going to stab this one or that one" OR "I am going out to kill *person x*" You dont think there are those out there that are negatively effected by those statements? Like say for example a survivor of a stabbing OR a loved one of someone that was murdered? How about I exploded and flame striked his butt? Well I am sure fire victims/suvivors could take offense to that. So by your example ALL trash talk or all evil RP should be bannable? People PLAY UO and other online games to have an escape from life in general, and in doing so SOME actually love to play the bad guy. As long as they do not cross the line of personal attacks all should be fair in love and war.

It should be ALL about context, ANY word should be that way. If I am with a few buddies and they call me a redneck piece of white trash .. then cool, whatever. However if some Joe Blow off the street wants to do that with a little anger in their voice or in the body langauge then it's game on. The same applies to the N-Word, if a crew of black dudes {or African Americans if they prefer - I have friends that detest being called African Americans - as they put it "I am not from Africa"} are hanging out in game and want to call each other the N-word then they should be banned?!? Get real man, mere words should not be bannable just because someone uses them in a non threatning, non racist way.

  15. Cloak&Dagger

"****" Is the only single word I don't condone the use of. I am an open person, and short of actually attacking someone verbally I can understand. **** might be the only word I would say should not even be allowed said, not as in banable but auto filtered. I understand your point as I am against censorship but this is a word that really has been the definition of fear and hate and has been amplified over the years.

RPing is one thing, Being evil is one thing, but neither of which requires the use of this word, even in Its original derived form ( to seize or take by force by the latin definition), Because of what it stands for today. Unfortunately you can not use any foul word in its true meaning with out people getting offended, but this one is somewhat....over the edge in the offense it can be taken as.

Edit: btw the context your friend used it in is the context in which it is hurtful and inappropriate...the "chat ****" is acceptable to me, but meh again I understand your point as I really am against censoring and people need to find their own place in the places they choose to be.

I see your point, and can understand that line of thinking, which is why personally I don't used any of the autoban words {well that and I want to keep my account open lol}. The whole "words you get auto banned for" only came about due to lazy GM support in the first place imo. You can't get them GM's to show or do their job half the time anyway, so instead of making them look for context they just implemented auto ban for x-word. *shurgs*

Either way, it was good to actually have a decent debate with someone who don't get their panties all in a wad and start getting all belligerent for a change. :thumbup1: Something which has been lacking on the boards as of late. WAY too many thin-skinned folks these days, have a disagreement with them and you start dealing with an eight year old.

Last I knew Ultima Online is rated Teen. While content may change while online, if things go unmoderated and people can spew filth such as that, the ESRB will get on EA's ass, and if the ESRB doesn't parents will. Plus, you can be evil without being a ****. Is being evil a reason to be racist? Oh, I'm roleplaying a racist. ...No. It's a slippery slope. If people can't be mature, they deserve to get banned, that simple.

    The simple answer is Yes.

The complaint if you send one about harrassment will tag your logs and all statements including your chat will be seen by the GM/Dev.

You place the call under verbal.

The party who is doing the offence is gunna be very unhappy once the log is viewed.

It really depends on the context words are used most of the times. But there are people out there who really seem to get off on trying to offend as many people as they can and will use every word they can to intentionally offend. The kind of people who seem to crave attention. That's the real issue and every so often you will see those people in the chat. Smack talk is one thing and I have no problem with it unless it really starts dominating the general chat but that just gets annoying, nothing to page about lol. But some people really seem to go way overboard to the point where it isn't smack talk anymore but senseless vulgarity, hate, etc.

easy workaround - you swear in French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Swahili or whatever other language you're capable of. I'm quite sure the chat filter only triggers on english words.

    Actually, the ESRB won't.

Online-enabled games carry the notice "Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB." This notice warns those who intend to play the game online about possible exposure to chat (text, audio, video) or other types of user-generated content (e.g., maps, skins) that have not been considered in the ESRB rating assignment.

First of all, profanity is not anti-social. Secondly, ignoring it in no way encourages it. The people that DON'T ignore it, such as the people complaining in this thread, are what encourages it. Time to be a big boy and move on.

Unfortunately you will never get away from this, as long as there is a keyboard and a screen to hide behind chat abuse will happen.

I recently got a mouth load of abuse for emoting a phrase which apparently someone used about 10mins before I even logged in...as if they had copyright on it :loser:

I couldn't care about it at all. On Napa there is a small group that has gone to the length of making chars named very close to myself and other guild mates simply to spam gen chat with this and that. Personally I enjoy the fan club.

The chat certainly makes for interesting pre and post PVP "chat" but it is amazing what some people will say in regards to scaming and such...I've a long list of people whom will never be in our guild....

    Profanity isn't antisocial?
Wow. There are laws against it. CD have warning labels.
I think you have become so desensitized you actually don't know that many people consider it an act of ignorance to swear at all.
There are so many words available to articulate with.
One of my favorite statements Ive ever heard is
Swearing is a desperate act of an ignorant mind, clamoring for attention.
I know .....this is UO. Edgy ,Hasty. Kill or be Killed.
Regardless of what I believe the game is rated teen. If I don't like it I can quit. I know that. People who abuse chat should be accountable for it.
Huge strings of profanity are unacceptable imo. A word here or there isn't a big deal. The OP was clearly focused on Hate. I support the OP......

Being as the majority of the population swears on a regular basis, I would not consider it anti-social. I think people have woken up and realized they are just words and have no more or less effect than any other words...but I didn't post to turn this into a philosophical debate. If you don't like it, ignore it. Don't tell people how to speak. And for the last time, online content IS NOT RATED. The teen rating refers to the actual game play, not the people who play it.

You can be verbally abusive to someone and never use one word that is considered profane. I never said profanity. In that context, you really should look up what the word anti-social is.

Here, I'll save you the trouble-
Anti-social behaviour (with or without hyphen) is behaviour that lacks consideration for others and that may cause damage to society, whether intentionally or through negligence, as opposed to pro-social behaviour, behaviour that helps or benefits society (Berger 2003, p. 302).

Secondly, yes, it does encourage it. People don't act like jackasses just because people post about it on a thread on a board. To make that assertion just shows how ill equiped you are for a discussion of this nature. People act like jackasses because they are safe behind their computer screens in their anonymity with no fear of reprisal.

Feel free to come back when you are better equiped for a discussion of this nature.

Really? And just where do you get this from? Granted, swearing isn't necessarily an anti-social behavior, just like you don't need to use swear words to use what could be considered anti-social language.

I agree with the context of your post in that I don't necessarily consider swearing anti-social. Just interested where you got that information from?

Now correct me if im wrong, but can the word **** not be used in ways other than sexual acts? I mean sure the way we have conected the word to a sexual assault against somone not willing is pretty much given. I personally dont say its acceptable, but at some point people are going to have to take a deep breath and relize its a game and some people are morons and hurtfull towards others.

And I have had things forceably taken from me in game and after if someone had said they ****d me of my lewts. I wouldnt cry ban I would probably chuckle a tad after a few curse words then look for a wandering healer.

    Cmon people breath deeply.

With that being said i do dislike the majority of **** talk in the general chat system. It lacks thought and i enjoy a good word thrashing every now and again after killing a few select people but i do it over their corpse not in the chat system...

First off there is saying something in-game in an RP manner.. and then there is just out and out lude behavior.

Fact is crap like all that spoken in Chat is just plain LUDE and inappropriate behavior. First off you have NO idea who all is in chat... and no way to find out. Secondly there could be children in Chat... and seeing others say that sort of thing an nothing happening about it only encourages them to think that behavior like that is not only OK but it's acceptable normal everyday talk which it is NOT or should NOT be.

It's one thing to RP evil and bad and all that.... but Chat is no place for that. I see no problem with RPing something evil and saying terrible things "IF" and that's a BIG if.... all parties involved accept the RP and all parties involved are "adult"... enough to understand it's ROLE-PLAY and not real. Another MAJOR problem is that some folk FAIL and epically fail at separating GAME from LIFE. And get fairly bent about it.

Now I for one am a Christian and a Female... and I page often on folk who are Abusing the Chat... as well as abusing the naming system. I can't figure why so many think it's cute to name their characters and their pets things that are Highly offensive and inappropriate and I find it speaks VOLUMES about the persons mentality and mental age.

Allowing racist or hate talk is in my opinion worthy of a perma ban. That has no place either in society or in-game and allowing such to occur once again sends a message that this sort of thing is not only OK but Acceptable.... which it is NOT.

Now once again I can understand if there is Role-play involved and you say something such as: "All Drow are liars and murderers and do not deserve a second chance or a first chance to open their filthy lying mouths.... they should be killed the moment you see them!".... However saying the dreaded "N" word or any such thing against someone you know is African-American or whatever just to be a ****** is NOT acceptable in society or in a game.

In my opinion I think folk ought not say anything they wouldn't say in front of their own parents or in Church... in the chat. They should do that FAR more privately ..... and really who in the Blazes do they think they are???? and Why do they have this silly belief that anyone besides them and the one they are chatting with CARE??? Really that sort of stuff should be kept to oneself. As no one wants to have to listen to the childish name calling... Many times I feel as though I've gone back into the 2nd grade or worse.

I just think it's unacceptable in most all places. Role-play is one thing but really there are better ways to role-play evil than to be just sick and vulgar.

And in my opinion paging a GM does NOTHING. No matter how often I page on things the same people continue to use inappropriate language and behavior.

Wow, seems some people really don't seem to grasp what this thread is about. It isn't about the casual swears or any BS like that. No one is "crying" about people who will say "crap" or "sht" or "fck", or whatever other casual sayings. It's about the people who take if far overboard, people who say stuff that wouldn't even be acceptable smack-talk by PvPers.

No such laws exist. There are regulations because people are small minded. Keep in mind the majority of the world do not regulate such things. They do not regulate most things of a "profane" nature as it is a taught behavior not one you "pick up". (Granted some regulate and censor things of lesser problematic issues such as news but that has nothing to do with being "desensitized").

You are correct as I pointed out the original nature of the word. But today it is rare anyone knows what these words actually mean and always connect them to their "slang" or "profane" meaning, most of which have only showed up in the past few hundred years.

Just because you align yourself around a profane group of people does not mean the majority of all people use such language. Now I am not saying I do not but generally, in passing, most people will not use such language.

Missed this post in my previous post somehow.

Only wish to comment on your second point. The policies of EA do not entirely encourage this type of behavior, I have to agree with a previous poster that posts like these do encourage it. It is not mainly because they can hide behind the anonymity but it is because it gets a rise out of people. If everyone were to ignore them, and/or not care/ be bothered by such behavior, said behavior would cease. I do not entirely disagree with you that policies would keep it in check, but the people can keep it in check just as easily as policies can.

    From the Texas Penal Code:
Sec. 42.01. DISORDERLY CONDUCT. (a) A person commits an offense if he intentionally or knowingly:

    (1) uses abusive, indecent, profane, or vulgar language in a public place, and the language by its very utterance tends to incite an immediate breach of the peace;

PENAL CODE  CHAPTER 42. DISORDERLY CONDUCT AND RELATED OFFENSES

That took me 30 seconds to dig up on bing.

I agree to a point to Jax's statement, the difference being he hangs out and works with adults as do I. Earlier in this thread I stated I am career construction person. Do any stereo types come to mind ? *chuckles* I've behaved as poorly as any. I just do it on a job site not on an un moderated teen rated game. Jax your right with with your comment on simple minds. I may be on the "other" side of the fence in my view point. I think the simple minded ones are the ones who spew strings of obscenities simply because they have nothing better to do. Most teens in school are quite capable of that. That doesn't mean it belongs in UO. Just my 2cents. I'm glad this thread isn't locked yet. It's well worth the babble........

Excuse me for my neglect in not stating everything I mean, with your perfect English I would hope you had understood I was addressing the fact that CDs have warnings on them not because of any laws but because of people being simple minded. I had to read your post and what you quoted from me more than once to figure out why you said that, I realize the mistake was not minor but still.

Also such laws are defined as un-enforceable because Profanity can be any word in the dictionary. I can intelligibly, correctly, and in a non-profane manner use every word in the dictionary.

Your friend's poor choice of words cannot and should not be excused. There are better roleplay choices of words. If he seriously wants to roleplay, he would be strongly advised to make an effort not to use anything that is in any way racially offensive, sexually explicit, derogatory, or inflammatory in any way to any other player.

If he can't or won't use good choices of words, then he can and will get banned.
