So sad that the only form of pvp some people have is hoping to verbally badger you into saying something inappropriate in general chat, so they can page. Below, I will try to guide novice gen chat duelers into not falling prey to the beast!

Tutorial for all newbie gen chat pvpers:

When someone you're talking to in gen chat says your name followed by something along the lines of "please don't talk to me that way", they have officially started the process of being able to page on you. Keep your attacks non personal, if you still feel the need to pvp in gen chat. Don't include the name of character with a derogatory remark. Don't use the dreaded "r" word because 1) it should never be used anyway and 2) it's auto 3 day suspension. When you see the phrase above "please don't talk to me that way" directed at you, be cautious! Chances are you've stepped over the line, and a savvy gen chat pvper is about to pk you!

Do not try to match wits with known gen chat pvpers. You are only a gm skill gen chat pvper at best, and some of these people are 120 skill. They'll trick you into saying something personal (real name, location, irl threat, racial slur) and then pounce on you. Don't play their game!

If you feel the need to engage them because they repeated call you out in the "gen chat arena", then laugh at them. Call them a bad pvper, or a trammie. Keep it safe until you get your feet wet. Try not to swear. Not only does it show them that they've gotten under your skin, but also it screams lack of education. Needle them with the little things like spelling errors. You get better "gains" with those. You don't need to stay at gm skill forever. One of my favorites is targeting the "you're, your" and "they're, there, their" grammatical errors. It's just a win/win when they try to combat that. They are already leery because they know other gen chat patrons are watching, and they don't want to look ignorant with a botched spelling response. Plus, you cannot get paged on for correcting spelling errors. It's your way of Cleaning up Brit!

It would be nice if the GMs kept logs to see how often the Legendary Gen Chat pvpers try to entrap novice gen chatters. You would think a GM would crack down on the instigators who "flop" when barely being touched (basketball reference). Alas, it is what it is, so tread lightly when encountering one of these people.

Oh, and to last night's GL gen chat and stratics hero who failed on all levels...

beats me. from experience most pvpers turn off general chat except to advertise a big fight somewhere or to insist a foe return to the fight.

at least, thats how pvpers usually talk outside of the local yewbies.

I have my chat turned off all the time.... In my experience, my ADD kicks in and i don't pay attention to what needs to be done during a fight. Its easy to be tough when talking through a keyboard. Just turn it off, plain and simple.

Why ppl have to spam garbage in General Chat when they can create their own channel so everyone else can get a little peace? Dev should add a default pvp channel for those trash talkers.

Saint is referring to the fact that GL is basically overrun by essentially 3rd grade maturity level folks that generally spend half the night in gen chat calling each other names.

    You are a $#%$%$^.
    No you are a #$%$#%.
    You suck.
    You suck more.

    Blah blah blah....

I have no love lost for people who say inappropriate things and then get banned. If more people would shut their mouth and just play the game and upon fight - win or lose say 'Hey that was fun'. It would be a better UO world.

These group of 3rd graders have made GL gen chat unusable from approx 7-11pm every night.

Apparently some people are intentionally trying to incite others and due to their low intelligence/maturity - they are easily enticed. Personally - I'd be happy if they do get banned. Shut up already and play the game. Stop woofing about it because honestly no one gives a crap what you do in a video game. Is someone keeping score?

  10. Some people need to learn some tolerance, taking it to a higher court doesn’t always get you somewhere. HAHAHA

Some people just have turned their grief tactic into "Lets see if i can get someone banned by saying something, that i will in turn let a GM know i feel is offensive"'. Most of this happens especially after getting curbed stomped in pvp, they lost in the game, so their goal is to make you lose. In this case, by getting you banned.

    The mentality is a joke.

    Saint is dead on.

As for everyone saying "just turn gen chat off", thats not necessarily an easy answer. Gen chat is useful, for anything. From the guy "Selling 5000 relic frags for 5mil", to the guy "Rikky up on the Island, *** is working it", it is a great tool. And sure, I add my 2 cents into the gen chat wars alot, but mainly to try to get someone to understand how delusional they are, ie - getting to hear how bad of a player you are, after you just ripped someones head off.

A lot of pvp advertising goes on via icq. Typically telling someone where a fight goes on, when done in general chat means nobody is on who knows people in the opposing guild.

And has GL become so awful? Atlantic has like 5 people who everyone just blocks...

Although I have been on a bit of a break since getting BF3 and a new stomping system, I never understood the concept of paging to try and get some one banned in PvP. There are a very limited group of people whom actually fight, I suspect that everyone who posts here has fough one another, so to reduce the field by even one player drops the percentage odds of getting a fight greatly. Lose 3 guys from one guild and you're not going to see that group again...silly stuff.

There was a separate channel during the Beta Test of the system - but sadly, the verbal smack-talk PVP'ers refused to use it and automatically went to General Chat so that they had a bigger audience when they proclaimed their greatness - and how their opponents mother (enough said).

Yep, lots of people in gen chat who want to show their PVPness to people who really don't care to see it.

As they said Gen Chat on GL is a nightmare sometimes. I personally just try my best to avoid talking in it.

When I do get sucked into the conversation its usually after I've gotten fully fed up with the vulgar language there. And Yes I've gotten more than a few a nice little 3 day vacation from UO.

However its not the intent I set out with. Generally the intent is to clean up the "airwaves" so to speak because I'm tired of seeing the vulgar BS in between the useful stuff... Gen Chat has it's uses... like Corgul run leaving from Brit Bank in 5... Or Rats up in Valor or whatever.

What I don't like to hear is what someone is going to do to someone else or their mother or who has the more vulgar description of someone elses anatomy...

Often GLs can be like listening to a bunch of kindergarten dropouts during detention when the teacher is away.

That or a teenage girls lockerroom filled with snotty little pre-teens who are all hyped with PMS.

The ole he said she said you did but you didn't but they did... and we're gonna and you can't... ruckus....

Sometimes I delight in just playing mind games with them until they look so foolish and stupid that they stay out of Gen Chat for a few days.

The ole I'm rubber and your glue tactic...

Isn't it fun to be back in grade school?

The ignore lists have a limit, as some of us have found out.

The Devs increase the limit by around 100 and then we'll consider "just ignore them" a viable option.

If you're in the EC, separate out Global Chat into its own tab... This way, its there in the background, but you aren't forced to read it unless you want to.

A CC users only option is to turn it off...

Sounds like a thread aimed at slave girl... she likes to irk people on, wait until they get upset and say the wrong thing, then page on them... and if its bad enough, go and loot their house after it falls.

People like this who have nothing better to do with their time are 4 letter c-words.

This type of thread is kinda old... a been there done that moment. Nothing we can do here on the Stratics end.

Ignore them, leave general chat, create your own chat or whatever. It is not going to change. We have been on this since chat was created.

Devs read this forum. Customer service does not.

One of my silly pet peeves is posting here about customer service issues that neither Stratics or the Devs have anything to do with.

Stratics can do nothing about Customer service on the game level. We do not mod there. Nor do the Devs...

The devs do not moderate chat... Not their job.

Customer service does not really answer to UO devs. At least that is what I understand. Maybe some times in extreme instances. Usually not.

You folks want to change general chat? Send your complaints to the company. Posting here is not a good way to influence EA policy.

    Just saying.
