GM clarification on the following things please? (devs please look)

Discussion in 'UHall' started by imported_archite666, Apr 16, 2008.

  1. -Blocking movement with items inside a faction base.

-"Turreting" faction guards, basicly placing guards in a stationary place where they will attack enemy faction members.

-Goza mat building inside a house.

My dear friend and guildmate today has been accosted by a GM 3 times today and thrown in jail twice because of the issues listed above, GMs constantly give us different answers to these questions and frankly my guildmate is feeling extremly harassed, after spending alot of time and money investing into these prospects.

He was given a writed warning on the issue of turreting guards, which I have always been told was legal.

The kicker is that later after posting on the boards about his cool house he has been working on, a rival guild gathered outside of it and paged constantly saying he was causing extreme lag, which is BS, iv been in his house and the extra floors show up as I run around the house and it is quite fine, since none of the other guild had been in his house the "house cache" would not come into play, the gozas did not exceed any normal rules as if he had covered his house in them.

The GM showed up and promptly removed his house decorations, which included about 100 pieces of rubber, which adds up to about half of the total rubble on siege, he has now signed off and i'm wondering if he will return.

I'm sorry but I feel that the GM has possibly been a instrument in a rival guilds griefing. So I ask if we could get some offical feedback on the "legality" of these formentioned things, since I was under the impression all were legal, the faction issues are of less importance, the REAL question I have is: Was it really responsible of the GM to destroy my guildmates hardwork, I mean couldn't any group of people page on a house complaining of lag? How do you test that thing of thing? I don't believe the GM fully understood this was a issue of griefing.

Please read this short, tragic thread.

    His buying rubble thread

So this is why GM's take 2 hours to come when you page em huh? They're too busy catering to some griefers who just got griefed. I pvp when i want to and personally i would rather do pvm for one simple reason: People do whatever they can to win and this includes cheating of all sorts. As soon as they lose (no matter how they lose) they page GMs on you and cry cheater. The GMs only seem to respond to certain people well and i think they should just stay out of it.

Put your application to be a GM in and then you too can harass players or act shocked that people are cheating, etc.

These are supposed to be legal.

Blocking items was declared legal a long, long time ago because thieves can easily stealth in and out of bases (especially with today's mechanics), making it virtually impossible to defend sigils. They don't even really need to stealth anymore. Someone can run past a dozen guards with evasion, potions, bandages, confidence, etc. Plus they are in animal form which makes them difficult to target.

As for turretting guards, the developers tried to fix it but it didn't work. Then it was declared legal. If it isn't support to be allowed then go back and fix the issue which makes faction vendors blocking after server maintenance.

Also, one time our faction developed a method which made it impossible for enemies to enter our base. Your could have one person guarding watching 2 dozen standing behind the barrier. It was GM tested and passed. This was in early 2001 I think and it would no longer work today. Not that I think such a method should be allowed. But some items on the ground? They can easily be picked up. It adds an interesting dynamic, one that players have tried to employ against monsters in the past (and got in trouble for). It should definitely continue being allowed in faction bases.

I can understand the house being dealt with because of the lag it would cause... but just deleting it all like that is beyond harsh.. should have told the person to take it down and give them time to do it, not just vaporized it all.

    Report the GM, :/

  7. If the house was private and the person had never been in the house it would have created 0 lag as the contents of the house would never have loaded into there client.

This is just another grief tactic called griefing BY GM.

One of the biggest problems in UO is so many "rules" are not in black and white and there is NO place you can look them all up. It also falls on GM's that not only are working UO but sims online at the same time. I dont think any GM in game what so ever even knows all the "rules" or even has access to a database list of them.

Yes even if you had 20 goza mat stories in your house, they CANNOT be seen or cause lag from the outside...only once you enter the house. i know this cus when I was working on my tall christmas tree noone on the outside could see it until I let them in *grins*

if it were me, i'd be on the phone, or the next plane to EA headquarters, and i would raise hell until i spoke with an american person, of some stature, who will actually get something done. report the GM, then go about filing a lawsuit.

This is why the outsourcing of In-Game representatives is a horrible idea. Half the Gm's i've spoken to in the past year, have horrible grammar and some have broken english.

With all that said, more than likely nothing will happen. The officials over at EA will tell you they're sorry, they'll look into the situation, that they cannot replace any items without reverting the shard, give you a pat on the head and a kick in the ass (meanwhile they rake in another 15 bucks for your account)

Edit: And the complete blocking of a pathway is indeed, illegal. You have to atleast leave some type of accessible pathway (this is where you get to get clever and outsmart your opponant with a tricky pathway).

This is not exactly true. The guy next to me has a castle FULL of goza mats, at least 500 of them. Every time I run by his castle, which is private and I'm not accessed to, I get ridiculous lag because it's loading those damned goza mats. I can see them all over the top of his castle without going near the fron steps, which I can't step on anyway. I don't know why goza mats are different, but even with my housing cache setting turned down to 1, I am still hit with the lag-bat when I go near that castle.

I want to clarify this for any Dev who might respond. We're not talking random placement of objects, we are talking completely blocking the only entry point to a faction base.

Below is a pic from today's incident, taken by the person who was paged on.

With the exception of the names in the lower right hand corner, what you cannot see are the faction vendors to the East, with a path through the middle. TB traps are positioned down that path.

There is a double row of traps all the way across, as you can see, 2 of which are no longer revealed. Behind that is a turret with 10 faction guards which are all casters and you can see that the bagballs are completely blocking entry. The dead dragon you see there is one of the new uber dragons, which lasted less than 15 seconds.

As soon as anyone hits those traps, they are hit for roughly 30 pts per trap. If they hit both, thats around 60 HP gone and this happens right in front of 10 faction guards, which = dead. There is absolutely no chance to move more than maybe 1 bagball.. if that.

Keep in mind, too, that a player can place 125 candelabras into a crate, axe it and have all 125 candelabras on one tile. Imagine that done all the way across that bridge. Legal?

    - Yup!

You mention a lot of 'potentially buggy' 'tactics'.

I have stealth-cleared many faction choke-points in my day.
But this is kind of silly, I think.

Need some bug squashin' (Devs!) whence they get to embracing Factions for the solid potential it has had.

I like your colorful sig too [IMG]

I find it odd gm actually toke action against the guys house. I didint know a house no matter what was in it as long as no exploits were being used could be taken action against. I mean lagg is subjective and you could harras anyone using this premise. I mean like if I wanted to creat a house with bamboo floor tiles and checkered bright gaza mat colors and tons of parrots and windchimes and heritage token trees and wooden steeds and anything else I desired a person or guild could page on me and post it on stratics til there blue in the face and nothing can (or was) done about it.

But again this just shows people abused the gm system and still try to no matter how limited there staff is.

i dont know about the blocking stuff, but i find it rude if the GM really just walzed in and just deleted half your house.

If its a thing about lag then half the houses including all of mine are in danger of beeing forcefully cleared out by a GM.
If its about the Goza matts , couple month ago someone posted bout a GM deleteing all 5000 Goza matts they had stacked on their keep to build a 3rd and 4th floor and the GM did it and the guy was not banned eather.

If its about it beeing able to cast out of his house ...well half of the houses in Fell are build like that without the rubble where they can cast out of it.

If its about interfeering with the City/NPC buildings then they need to check on all shards , i know especially Luna has Vendors alot of thimes that are placed on the top levles of houses made to be looked that they are standing on the road and other fun stuff ...i think its pretty cool, but eather its all legal or all illigal.

Plus a warning of some sort be nice when new rules are implemented

I took a picture of the house in KR, so that I could zoom out enough to get it all on screen

I'm not sure why action was taken against it. No illicit building methods were used and when I, on my low spec pc, (Athlon 1700+ 1.4mhz, 640MB RAM) was invited to view it I experienced no excessive lag, even when moving around inside the house.

i guess the only difference was i had the unfair guards and you had the completely fair super drag? also guards dont cure themselves, so the way you guys kill them is that you were hiding in the rooms right next to them and popping out to poison. you just got mad because you were outclassed. krystal herself has said to me when i had vendors completely blocking the entrance that it wasnt the turrets that bothered you guys it was the line of vendors w/o a break. so i change it up and here we are still...

dont worry about me though im already busy elsewhere.

You can twist it however you want. No one speaks for me, but me. I believed the blocking you did was illegal, so I called a GM to make you aware of it. I did not complain about the guards or anything else. If the GM spoke to you about guards, he/she did that of their own accord.

I simply had no other way of discussing it with you. I couldn't show myself to speak to you without being ganked by the guards in the turret. I cannot part you because we are in opposite factions and I do not have you on ICQ.

Further, you know that dragon wasn't mine. I am a thief and you know full well that it was just me and you for roughly 2 hours. I always enjoy a challenge. That was some serious fun, but once someone from my team logged in to help, you barracaded yourself inside with what I believe to be an illegal tactic. Simple as that.

looking at that picture, all I can say is LAME.

I don't do factions, but if these kids, young and old, have to resort to that childish behavior, they need more than a GM slap on the wrist.

    Somethings just shouldn't be.

Goza mats??.....give me a break, that's just kiddie whining.

Not to be a total jerk but, do you even know what a Cache is? If you don't want to lag, you want the cache to be cranked way up.

For those of you that think other wise, here is an explanation:

A cache basically is information that is stored on your computer, and loaded from your computer after it is stored there. The reason why, it takes a lot less time to grab data from a local disk drive than from the server. So what happens is the first time you encounter this house, it is loaded into your cache (on your hard drive), this could cause lag for a second. Next time you run by, it just pulls the information out of the cache (your local disk), which happens exponentially faster.

This is the same with browser cache and various other caches. The only reason to have a low cache is if you want to conserve disk space because you have a very small hard disk. Another myth is that if you have a lot on your hard drive your pc runs slower, this is only partially true, it may slow down the finding of data, but only a very very very small amount, nothing you will notice, and it wont slow anything down if you defrag every now and then.

So, if you have a decent size hard disk, crank that cache, you will lag less.

On a side note, slavery was made illegal in America the 1860's... So why do we buy stuff made in China by Chineese slaves who make a dollar a day?

Oh wait, since slavery is illegal, we just exported it to a different country... duh. *slaps forehead*

You are wrong The GM was wrong. I have done factions most of my UO time well at least 1/2. You were and have always been able to block paths and set up turrets INSIDE Faction bases. There has been no mention of any change to that from devs what so ever. Attitudes like yours on siege are too plentiful one of the main reasons I quit that shard a couple years ago. why not page on everyone you cant beat saga again *sighs*? In fact I feel I should pass every house on siege that even gives me a blip (I am west coast BTW) and page a GM that they cuase lag now, just like that house with all those parrots on the roof. Thats just lame......

BTW A friend told me about the house so I logged on to see it and did not get any lag what so ever and im west coast good lord. There is a L-tower filled with parrots on the roof and when I run by that it laggs me up.

yea i was working on the roof to that last level in the pic, another couple hours and it would have been done, but oh well. just wish i would have gotten a shot of the finished product. i was going to take out a level of mats and make a big cathedral type thing and make it look like a big church inside and a nice open floor and roof to boot. i could see the problem if it gave me any clear advantage, but i really dont think it did,as theres sticky posts in homes and castles explaiining how to breach the roof level. i assumed by that premis that 1 tile or 1 floor above was just fine.i still say though had there not been an entire guild out front with a placement tool in every bag like a bunch of vultures that it wouldnt have been a problem. the first thing the guy said to me was that there were multiple pages about excessive lag in the area was what brought him to me. he also said he really thought it was cool but because of the pages and the height it had to come down.the worst part was digging all the crap out of the crate.

But what I want to know is where the line is drawn on certain things.

Having that many parrots in your house should not be allowed there should be a limit that stops you from placing more than 10.

Why should adding 4 extra stories to your house be legal? I find it absurd and it should never have allowed the objects to be secured over 20z higher than the roof. [ 20z means raising something 20 times from the floor up for those not familiar with {z} in UO 1 story of a house is from floor to floor 20z high]

Blocking faction entrances illegal? Get real why should it be the items can easily be picked up and moved so stop crying about that.

"Having that many parrots in your house should not be allowed there should be a limit that stops you from placing more than 10."

    Why?
For the record that is my home and it has been that way for well over a year. It is out in BFE or off the beaten path; I also know my neighbors and if any of them had asked me to remove them I probably would have.
My home makes people smile and seems to harm no one. I am using an old computer and wouldn't know a "cach" if it bit me, so grinding to a screeching halt adds a bit of a thrill for me every time I run home (Siege so no recall/sacred journy and the char has no mage). There are 3-4 other homes with several dozen parrots on the shard that again no one seems to mind.
parrots are also a way to memorialise people since you can name them.

"Why should adding 4 extra stories to your house be legal? I find it absurd and it should never have allowed the objects to be secured over 20z higher than the roof. [ 20z means raising something 20 times from the floor up for those not familiar with {z} in UO 1 story of a house is from floor to floor 20z high]"

Please see the better homes and castles forum.
There are several creative and beautifull displays there and goza in private homes cause me little lag; heck even in homes that are public or I am acesed to with goza cause me no great lag. Again parrots/statues/horses/heralds....Lag Hell.
I think it's a darn shame such a creative idea and hours of work was destroyed.

Yep me too.... however the other thread seems to have clarified the blocking question.
One down 2 more questions to go.

    ----------

I only have 40 parrots on Siege, but atm they are all boxed up...seeings how Siege seems to have become more a pile of *page the gms* whine whine whine regarding peoples' house deco.

I am NOT referring to the faction thing since I do not play factions, nor folks that may page on someone or actions that may *seem* illegal to them, yet even there..........if the GMs were ever consistant in their dealing with customers there would be far less issues on ALL shards regarding somethings. One day they ban and jail people for doing whatever, next day next hour they *let it slide* regardings someone else, making total inconsistancies all across the board, per shards, making oft a mess in the infrastructure all over UO lands.

As for house designs, there been myriads of creative homes, full of goza mats, rubbles, parrots and normally many players just opt to enjoy the creativity of said designs rather that whine complain to GMs about someone's house design or parrots all perched all over. I am on dialup and manage to see wonderous designs tons of tiles full, and while I may lag it oft is so briefly temporary, it is no issue really...but then I prefer to enjoy players designs knowing some *may* lag me up more than others...but their creativity oft soo cool tis worth it. And since there seem to be NO rules on how many parrots one CAN hoist, nor mats that specifically say...so...for many yes anything goes and no one even complains on many a shard...till some one does complain and keeps at it making a gm feel they..*have to bother to DO something*. Even then they oft smile, and just help em take it down or issue a warning saying ok......it looks great but ya gotta remove some of this...and they don't just strip the players home of items or things *unless it is illegal exploited stuff* should still be the customers job to remove the stuff and keep it and a time frame given to em to comply to lessen their mega designs first..........cuz there are no RULES saying...you can not build the taj mahal and a lunar landing atop it..with your house design and mats and rubble..........till they MAKE those rules............... and regarding parrots too, just a bunch of players that feel it is THEIR JOB Their calling in life to bother gms about folks house designs. I am on one of the slowest dial up connections there are out there...............I do NOT page a gm cuz someones fricken parrots or rubic cube goza mats house lagged me up....few tiles away from it ...even I do not lag anymore...the temp. lag well worth seeing their cool designs ! HAHA

And some folks have more items and junk IN their homes we can not see at all, and it may even be exploited duped junk hidden all inside...I would rather GMs work to catch them and scripters than parrot owners and house deco designers whom using LEGAL game things to play with, making an artistic house.

So an even match requireing a GM to break the tie? When I call a GM I get a canned response.

I didn't page until he threw down the bagballs, which I believed [and still believe] was illegal. I have not seen any indication otherwise.

Completely blocking the entrance-ways to any faction based was deemed legal during Age of Shadows when necromancy's wraith form allowed you to stealth with no-push-through. So since people couldn't guard their bases and see these stealthers come in and steal their sigils, completely blocking the bases was deemed legal.

What you haven't seen is anything changing this back to being illegal.

Sorry but, it's perfectly legal to block yourself into the base.

I would like to refer to my topic:

GM Rikaun states that it is legal to block in faction gameplay, without a passageway, as long as the items can be moved.

Though 1 GMs voice might not be final, as I've read in several topics now.

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure I trust that, but until we have some official word, I guess thats it. I suppose the few seconds it would take to confirm the answer, one way or the other, is just too much to ask of the powers that be!

Blocking faction entrances illegal? Get real why should it be the items can easily be picked up and moved so stop crying about that.

Axe crate with 50-100 candleabras in it make HUGE pile of things to move all on one tile.

Ahh yes I had forgotten that some people will abuse the fact you can break crate loads of stuff over a single tile. I was under the impression there were one of each and is was being used to slow down getting in.

Speaking of that why the hell doesn't everything in the crate get destroyed upon breaking it? Seems like a good fix for this to me.
