Ok i was thinking of making a Treasure Hunter but don't know where to start... was wondering if anyone out there had a good combo of skills that would make up a great treasure hunter... i read the one on UO and they say...

    1.lock picking
2.remove trap...(is this really needed if your having magery to remove trap spell ?)
3.mining...(is this really needed?i mean is it the higher the mining the better you are at digging up the treasure?or do you just use the skill to dig ?)
    4.cartography
    5.peace making
    6.magery
    7.musicianship
    8.Provacation

Any input would be great, i always wanted to treasure hunt :) thanks so much

Ok, a note on mining, you don't need it if your going to use a guide like stratics has that will show you exact coordinates of the chest. If you plan on winging it and doing it on your own, then get it. You do not need remove trap, unless you find it to be fun, hehe. Telekinesis is all you need. If you have gm lockpicking, you will not set off the trap, at least I do not think so. Haven't in my experience. So, instead of mining and remove trap, why not add Eval and Meditation : ) or just have fun and add in some more barding skills, etc.

If you want to solo them 120 music and 120 pro
    skip peace skill
    evs/pro and run

thats what i was thinking of doing evs/provacate then run

But i have had people tell me that using a pet (which requires taming)is the best way to go.

and with the whole mining thing you just need to use the mining skill to dig you don't need to be gm mining to dig up a level 6 treasure right?

KidJoe, that doesn't work to well on the new AWs.

For a bard-Thunter, I'd go (with jewelry & equipment like the song-woven mantle and Minstrel talisman, and a +magery spellbook). The most expensive part will be the talisman and the ingredients for the mantle.
    100 Cart
    100 LP
100-120 Magery (if you use scrolls, you can cast your EVs and Earth eles 100% of the time at 100 skill).
    120 Music
    120 Provo
Peace & Disco (120 in one, however much your skill and equipment will get you up to in the other - a REALLY good jewelry set might allow 120 in both)

Take it from me, I have been doing lvl's 1-6 with 0 mining using stratics to know the exact coordinates. Unless they made some change making a req. min skill in mining to dig it up, but I highly doubt that. Are you winging it or using stratics guide to t-maps?

You could use a pet, but if you are doing lvl 6, keep that pet in the distance away from the chest when it comes up, because those spawn the big bad guys, starts with like 4 or 6 of them at once. Be aware though, some of those monsters cannot be prov. I believe.

Mining is completely unnecessary on a T-hunting template these days. The current high-level spawn will insta-kill you on a failed invis or recall/teleport at 6 squares, just as easily as if you were standing by the chest.

I'm a bit of a maverick, playing a swordsman T-hunter, but I found out with another template that it is safer to mark a different part of the island, and precast recall (then target the rune as the spawn pops) than trying to invis, because you can then move back in at an angle of your own choosing, and better isolate your chosen targets for a pet or barding skills (or in my case, a beatdown with a slayer). Invising pretty much just instigates a contest of "How many invises can I cast before I either die, or they all fail to reveal", THEN you have to hope the spawn spreads out enough to decloak for the barding or bringing the pet in.

    My treasure hunter:
    100 cartography
    100 lockpicking
100 fishing (um ... ok not a pure T-hunter skill)
    115 magery
    120 music
    120 peace
    60 meditation

Not an optimum build, but this character survives nicely. The only problem I have is ancient wyrms - since they were buffed, this character runs out of mana before being able to kill them and they just heal right back up in no time flat. I could probably get around this, but for now I just simply avoid doing L6s.

My biggest fear is that telekinesis will some day get nerfed - I've been trying to build a backup character with disarm traps, but I've found it insanely painful to even get my detect hidden up to the minimum.

so basically i guess theres no real template for a treasure hunter?

    except the main skills are...

    Lock picking
    Magery
    Cartography

*nods* those three alone are basicly what you need. The remaining skill points just help you deal with the spawn faster or more reliably - at that point, it's just a matter of what style you like to play.

    Yep : )

Although even magery can be lived without as long as you have a way to recall (which can be done with scrolls or chiv) and cast telekinesis (which can be done with scrolls)

Although if you plan to rely on magery even a little, you will have to have at least eval and med. Since theres no real point to having gm magery if you can't really use the spells :p

    I play mine at:

    110 Magery
    110 Music
    110 Provoke
    110 Peace
    100 Carto
    100 Lockpick
    80 Mining

Above are "real" skills. Use scrolls/ items to get 110s to 120s if possible. If your account doesn't yet receive vet increases to your skill cap, lower mining to 60, you'll only lose 1 tile when digging. Unlike many, I believe mining helps alot. I "stand off" far enough not to be immediately hit, pre-cast invis, and can't remember ever dying to initial spawn. I do all levels solo. The only "pain" is no meditation, equip as much mana regen stuff as you can! Best of luck with your character.

If you have soulstones. Its a good idea to stone your 100 cartography when your done deciphering all your maps and use put another skill on the char. I personally have 120 music, peacing, and provoking with 115 magery. When I stone cartography, I put 100 discord on also....helps to maximize your skills. I usually run 1 level 6 map solo in about 5-10 min depending on how many ancient wyrms spawn (hehe).

    Good luck to ya.

One more thing......I dont use mining. Save that for my crafters. Mining only helps with the distance you can be to dig up the chest. If you get your timing down right, you can precast invis and invis right before the initial spawn hits with 2 earth eles up as targets to keep things moving while you provoke and peace and disco...

    Provo 115
    music 115
    magery 105
    eval 110
    carto lock med 100

I dont have much trouble on my own but I find it boring without a friend. LVL 6 is hard but no one says you HAVE to kill the AW. You can lure him off like anything else and get back to looting. :scholar: Invis pots are my thunters favorite new item ever.

I prefer not to lure things as this I find is rather "rude" behavior for a Treasure hunter much like leaving a pile of garbage behind for the next guy to have to deal with all the lag that comes from it.....

Generally I run with 120 music and peacing.....

    Zero mining....

    no remove trap either.

casting a couple of earth eles before I pop the chest and invising as it pops usually gives me the couple seconds I need to get off a good area wide peace and run.... now I lure the monsters off one by one and kill them.... though typically it's REALLY difficult to kill an AW alone I have done it... just takes a whole lot of patience and luck....

Often I like to bring a tamer friend or two with me to do level 6 chests... makes it more fun. Often times they have a few level six chests themselves so I just pop them for them and stand back peacing while they loot.... works fairly well.

As for AW not a big deal use a slayer type to provoke 2 of them or just provoke the rest of the spawn on them.. only difficulty is when they spawn 1.. that's when u log into ur tamer or call a friend and kill them to were ever you lured them too so u can finish looting the box
most of the time i take them a screen shot away until i get 2 to provoke them and kill them eblots work well to balance them out as they fight each other. I solo this way all the time i do die but not often.
one other tip is to cast evs befoer you dig up bax so they will target evs and you can run and hide. gl

This works best for me as a solo player even on level 6s. Sir Stain has
115 magery only because I refuse to pay 20 mill for a 120
    100 hiding
    100 stealth
    110 eval
    100 cart
    100 lockpicking
    50 ninjitsu
I alter stealing and cart on a rune stone. Right now he is a pickpocket. While digging the chest up cast invis and as soon as it pops up hide your self. Stealth away. Pull the ancients balrons or what ever is really tough away and kill the one at a time. I advise that if you are not 120 magery to carry a few ev scroles for not failing in critical situations. Use fast cast if possible. The ninjitsu is a must for me because I can for sure hide at the feet of a monster with a smoke bomb when I dont have time to cast invis or use natural hiding. Trust me, this works best if you are alone. If you can incorporate help it is easy then.

High-level treasure maps aren't meant for soloing.

Why is it that everyone wants to do things by themselves? Is there a lack of people willing to join in, or do people of modern UO prefer independence?

    I'm just wondering...
When I dig out a high-level treasure, we go with the crew and fight the critters as a team. More fun!

Best advice is to skip this profession all together. Treasure hunts are a joke. The loot it pathetic. I dont even keep maps anymore the loot is that pathetic.

I play on origin! On origin I learned to play alone mainly because HELP is never around when you need it. There is nothing wrong with playing solo. I solo 6s and to up that, I carry a piece of black rock. If an infected ancient gets after you, you had better have a smoke bomb because you want out run it. Peacers and provs can't handle them. I can't do champ spawns alone and I pay the price for that.

My T-Hunter is my fisherman/spare tamer.

    100 Carto
    100 Lockpicking
    100 Magery
    110 Taming
    110 Lore
    100 Vet
    100 Fishing

I wanted a fisherman and was looking at which character would it fit in best. Decided that since I can fish up maps, it should go well with my T-Hunter.

Next, I was trying to decide if I'd use a warrior, mage, bard or tamer. I decided on tamer coz as a bard, I'd have a problem with the last monster. With a tamer, no such issue. And I can store my extra colored cu shidhe and hiryus. Good thing too, now I have Dread Warhouses to include into that list.

Don't need to stone off carto at all either.

T-hunting loot is so pathetic, if you bring a group to do level 6, it will probably end in an awkward situation with everyone staring at the loot and there's nothing great to share about...

Well, I think the fun and good loot from a level 6 will mainly come from the spawn, not the chest.

Yeah, you only get one random one, though. But those are not really great arties. Lesser arties they be.
