we all know the herding skill is completely useless...how about replacing herding with grave digging =) where you could dig at any grave site in uo and have the chance to bring up special goodies, there could be like one super rare thing for each grave yard "i mean super rare" could be diggin bones for a year! and you could dig up other little cute things depending on skill level.....like lets say you needed to be 60 to start bringing up anything, you could get one or 2 items but there would be allot of junk stuff "like fishing does with shoes" for example the real common thing could be like fertile dirt =) but as you progressed you might bring up the skull of a past GM and other bones making full skeletons to display, or gems, jewelry, or spider webs "cob webs" ....you could also bring up monster youd have to fight...grave worms, zombies, anything undead "and paragons in ish" maybe a sot every now and again, a new deco item or 2.....then you devs could show the graves some halloween love in october....allowing very rare halloween themed items to spawn if your maxed skill........... just a little something to think about...would be very interesting to see what you guys could put in a grave for us to dig up =) it would be much like treasure hunting and if done right "by giving very low odds on everything nice" would keep people interested for a very long time =)

oh oh!!!! and another thought....much like stealing! if your skill isnt up to par you could be caught and guard wacked!!!! could also give bad karma, since it would be a crime..............heck you could even make it to where to even be able to start diggin a grave you would have to get a clue or something to a good grave "like off harder mobs that are undead" would give you a clue about something special being buried with "insert name" at lets say the yew cemetery .....endless possibilities with this!

great idea! since thieves need some love, how about 'grave robbing' instead of 'grave digging'?

I use to have a faction stealth herder who I used a fair amount years back to lure off tamed creatures people used to defend bases, made for a good laugh. I would also use him to raid harrowers in Destard by drawing large groups of dragons into fields. It's been ages since I've had a use for the skill though but those moments always bring back a good smile.

Sadly I fail to see much of a use for it now a days but I'd love to hear other thoughts.

Herding is not a useless skill. It cannot be used all over but sometimes it can have some usefullness. As far as digging goes, we have such a skill in the game, called "mining"..... I do not see it as a good thing for the game to damage herding or any other skill when merely adjust mining to get other things done could be a better solution.........

grave robbing would be even better!!! and having a maxed thief and grave robbing skill on same char could up your odds of finding special things =)

I would love if people added a bit of content as to what they actually use herding for, it's fine to say it has a use but not expand upon that. The OP talked about a over looked skill which could do with a review or it could do with some talk about how to use it.

    Go.

i think camping would be another of those skills that if you took out and replaced with something fun like grave robbing not to many people would complain about it

Camping could still have a use just as herding could but I would agree that a few skills could be revamped.

Besides being very useful for training skills like disco and Provo, its a great role playing tool. A lot of fun actually when you feel like taking a break from power gaming. I would like to see it stay please.

Besides, I don't see why a new skill would be required to implement the ops idea (which I like). Just add it as an ability to the existing stealing skill, or require mining and stealing together if you want a secondary skill involved.

    I don't think anyone's offended. Us herders know we a rare breed.:p

Do you want it as a skill as opposed to adding it to the existing skill as I proposed?

    I use herding.

I have worked the Spirit Champ spawn in Ilshenar to level two - and then used Herding to take 40 or so Kirin into the Harpy Nest just east of the spawn. Then I just sit back and harvest all the feathers.

I have also used herding for RP purposes as a shepherd boy or to lure off all of the wolves that are the symbol of an opposing group from their town area.

I have stealthed into an area and told lots of animals to follow someone just to mess with a guildmate.

I have lured a red into a trap with lots of Kirin/Unicorns in the area (Tamed and released at the trap location - then herded to keep them there).

It is not a big offense/defense type of skill - but it can be fun and does have it's uses.

id like to have it as a whole new skill to work. that way people cant just take the miners out to do it "because miners already have smithy and bods" id like to see everyone have to start this one from scratch . plus if it gives bad karma i doubt people would want that on their miners. i still like the idea tho of it being tied to thieving , getting a bonus for having both skills on the char...or maybe even having to join the thieves guild to train as a grave robber......i think that would be great for RP as well =)

From what I hear, using herding at spirit but going in the other direction, is a PvP skill on SP.... imagine being neg karma, and popping through spirit or sac gate into herd of 40 ki-rin and unis... :)

Herding useless? I think NOT! Try this: Get yourself a char that has Hiding/Stealth/Animal Lore/Herding and go get your pick of GD's. That's what I do in conjunction with my Tamer. 1 char goes in hidden/stealthing, lore's the best GD, then while still hidden/stealthing takes it back to where my Tamer is waiting to tame it... Saves a LOT of wear and tear on my Tamer and works like a CHARM !

Please leave Herding alone and pick on something else....

    Just sayin......

A Stealth Herder is also good for getting a squirrel from the back of the Labyrinth up to the front where you can tame it in peace (if anyone ever actually wants a squirrel...)

Your forgetting about the best skill of all... taste id!

Honestly, its not too bad of an idea.. kinda falls in with treasure maps a little bit, and mining as well. I like the idea of making it thief related, would make lil more sense =). Maybe throw it in as a type of NPC thief quest (if we ever get those).

Love this idea. Although like most ideas it would have to be done right. As in not able to be scripted. The monsters would be a good way to solve this I would think, like how the monsters have to be cleared around a tmap chest before it can be opened. I want to start on my thief/miner/grave digger character right now!

Dixie, this is one of the best ideas I've ever read on these forums, I love it!

I like the idea a LOT!

Herding is almost useless, I do agree it has some limited uses. It would become VASTLY more useful, if you were not limited to herding only Tamable creatures.

Taste ID has only 1 useful purpose left in UO and that could easily be rolled into the Alchemy skill.

Camping, yup, lets get rid of that one too.

Back to Grave digging, like the idea a lot, maybe combine a few of the different types of systems already in UO. Getting a "clue" from Undead kills, like the T-map system, find some type of "map" to the right grave sight. Have mining help out with chances. Maybe Cartography too, or Forensic ID. Have the rewards be special sets that can be collected, perhaps named items. Perhaps even have a set of items that could be collected to summon a new champ type encounter, or at least a peerless type boss monster to be defeated in a graveyard, among all the other spawn, Maybe the Grim Reaper again, when you have defiled the Dead, "too often for the forces of the underworld to tolerate."

No need to get rid of a skill people DO use. I'd say Mining + Stealing = Grave robbery.

This could be the best way to go and if there is enough resources, this could be made also more interesting adding in some rare drop loot of "graves' maps" and legendary cartography needed to decode them AND, along with legendary stealing and GM mining (3 maxed out skills...) as well needed to "enter" the grave's site........

These rare drops of "graves' maps" could be an occasional finding in level 7 treasures and in order to access the site, as I said, decoding them with a legendary cartographer would be needed as well as having REAL SKILL (no items, sorry...) all 3 stealing, mining and cartography skills maxed out.
The entrance would be granted ONLY to the decoder of the grave's Map possessing all those 3 skills and to at most 1other player while in a party. Not much room in a grave to get inside in too many..........

actually, I've used herding to help out a warrior who was having a bad time trying to fight a greater dragon. I couldn't make it break off the fight, but I could repeatedly tell it to move away from him, causing it to pause just long enough for him to recover a bit.
I've used it to herd the reptalons back into the labyrinth when someone dragged them all round to Miasma's corner and to bring squirrels nearer to the entrance, also sometimes I've herded the fire beetle to a spot where it could more easily be tamed.
Not to mention having lots of fun messing with left over Rikktor or Oaks spawn in T2A.
Stealth herding the spawn towards any raiders when you're working a champ spawn can be quite helpful too.

hehe not recently, though there was a time when I arranged 'receptions' for folk doing the champ circuit. A couple of ki rin in Delucia, a pair of drakes outside Fire's back door, a dragon awaiting folk exiting ice East or West. - I never took enough to actually kill anyone, just give a bit of a surprise. If you're interested enough, and can excuse some missing pictures, these herding tales are a little old now The Adventures of Heidi Ninfel
Keep it quiet though, there's folk around here that think I've never been through a red gate :D

Dixie - it sounds like another of many very fun ideas and I'd be happy if they made it happen. Having said that, it has to have it's place on the Dev's "list of priorities" and IMHO there are a number of things above it on the list...

Omg Petra, I'd forgotten all about Heidi's adventures... Now that I think about it, it was in reading Heidi's Adventures some time ago that I got the idea to stealth/herd GD's for taming. Any of you who want to see some real herding fun, simply MUST take the link here and see what Petra was up to "in her youth"....

    I
I've noticed you end a lot of posts with this. A piece of advice; sometimes things don't need to be "just said." Especially if they're blatantly obvious ones like this. If this is your only contribution to a suggestion thread, consider leaving it unsaid for the greater good. Stating that you're "just sayin" something just makes it look like you're trying to argue without threat of retaliation.

    Just sayin.......

Honestly the script writers for those copy cats that shall not be named have already designed a "grave digging" system that you describe pretty much to a tee....wouldn't be the first time the UO Devs "borrowed" something from them...

    Just sayin........:D
