There are many US citizens that live abroad... business people, ex-pats, immigrants, military, etc. There are some non-US holidays that are celebrated in the US, and US holidays that are celebrated in other countries.

It happens in the those countries and communities usually have a substantial population of those business people, ex-pats, immigrants, military, etc.

Why would you even post in this thread?

Two European trolls in one thread. Big surprise there.

Happy fourth to all Americans and those others who respect the holiday.

I don't think siteswap meant any harm by saying they don't care about US Independence Day in Europe, think about it.

The Sun never sets on the British Empire.

Happy Independence Day to all who celebrate theirs today!

I certainly meant no harm. The question was asked about European shards and why there was little interest in 4th July and I gave the answer.

It always amazes me how tetchy some people can be about a country they are not even native to...

Not trolling at all. I was merely answering the question of why there was nothing on Europa shard. The answer is that outside of Americans, no one really cares.

By all means have your celebrations, I respect that, but dont expect anyone else to participate or give a damn.

I'm an American, but it always amazes me how a lot of Americans behave when traveling abroad. Noisy, arrogant, and general all around a-holes. And then they wonder why most of the world hates us.

So again I ask, why would anyone expect the rest of the world to celebrate a US only holiday, especially since we ignore most of the holidays around the rest of the world (unless it includes lots of alcohol)? Arrogance. Sometimes I'm ashamed to be an American.

    Happy 4th Of July Everyone!

Other countries celebrate, Thank God They Left Day and I Don't Care How They Feel About Us!

Other countries celebrate, I Wish I Was Free Day!

And some countries celebrate, We Hate Americans Day!

So, whatever you are celebrating today, HAVE A GOOD ONE!

  18. Happy 4th back atcha !!

Its an American Holiday, everyone's invited ... long as they mind their manners
    heh!
not like "presents" are required ... or acknowledgement of favors past.
Some politicize it, some have solemn ceremony
all can choose HOW they "celebrate it"
where-ever in the world they are

it is that "individual freedom" that is celebrated at its core.

Maybe we'll note and remember, what others do this day
    Maybe we won't
Satisfies "individual choice" that way ... *grin*

They also serve who only stand and wait. Milton

Well Yank My Doodle It's A Dandy! I almost forgot what day it is.

I tend to avoid leaving the house on this holiday. My little tourist trap of a town gets horribly crazy. It takes about 20 minutes to drive through town and the whole town is only as big as one city block in San Francisco and has no traffic lights and only one stop sign.

I can understand other countries not liking this day. I just wish they would realize that it's not the American people in general they should be disliking but rather the American government and it's leaders. The people as a whole are just that, people. We're pretty much just like everyone else. It's only the power hungry, wealth hording top 5% that are greedy selfish bastards who are trying to take over the world. :)

Anyway, Happy 4th America. May good fortune smile upon you and everyone else throughout the world.

Being an older guy, I'm probably a little closer to this than you are. But I'll tell you why you should "give a damn".

I once worked with a retired US army vet who was there, in your lands, at your worst time.

It was on a Memorial Day, another US holiday you probably could not give a damn about.

He brought in photos he'd taken back in those days of old, forgotten it seems by many. They were pictures he'd taken of the Death Camps. See, this man had been there for D-Day, fought through Europe, saw his friends die for you and yours. The pictures were of the people who had survived the death camps, perhaps your kinsmen, standing around, emaciated, nothing but skin and bones, hollow eyes and souls.

The man said "I brought these pictures in today because people are forgetting."
This is his story to the best that I can remember.
"We went in there, and when the guys saw this, we were mad. We were angry, how could people do this to other people. And this wasn't the worse. There were still open pits with bodies piled up like cords of wood. The stink, the stench, was terrible. The worst smell you can imagine."
"We took prisoners, except for the SS troops. They were "true believers" and fought to the end. But most of the guys wanted to kill the one's that surrendered, because they were so angry. Some people say that they were just following orders, but a man doesn't just follow orders. You're responsible. But the officers kept talking to the men, to make sure that that didn't happen."

He told me some more, about how they couldn't just give the starving people there food, they had to start with a vitamin enriched soup, and bring them along slowly.

Then, he looked at me with wet eyes and said "To this day, I can't get that smell out of my nose. I've lived with that for all these years. I can't forget, and people mustn't forget."

So the next time you think that you "don't give a damn", you might want to consider this. That Americans died for you. That they carried terrible memories with them for the rest of their lives.

That they ask that you don't forget.
That's why you should "give a damn".

So being an older guy than you I will tell you why they don't "give a damn".
Fourth of July is Independence Day

Independence Day honors the birthday of the United States of America and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

Now why would they "give a damn" about the day we kicked thier butts and threw them out of OUR country?

I am retired US Navy and I have known Vets from WWI and WWII and let me tell you that they do "give a damn" about us on this day over there. Go over there and look at the places that honor the US Military.

They do "give a damn" and it is called.
Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day or VE Day) commemorates May 8, 1945 (in Commonwealth countries; May 7, 1945), the date when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany and the end of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich.

You people need to get your days straight. Having traveled the world over many times the rest of the world respects our military (past and present) and remembers very well the blood we shed in thier country to help keep them free.

I was talking to him, Frodo, not all Europeans. With relevance to his generation, I suppose.

    Edit to add:
And I'll tell you what. You should have been with me on this, instead of acting like I stepped on your toes.

I hope all who celebrated it had a nice fourth.
But it is now the 5th and it's time to get back to work.

That said, I'm locking this so the budding argument/debate is stopped before it gets out of hand and we say things we might regret.
